Reinterpreting Asiatic Representation in the Pictorial Space of Whistler’s Purple and Rose: The Lange Leizen of the Six Marks

The presence of East Asian decorative art and objects were prevalent during the 19th and 20th century, and these exquisitely refined objects inspired many artists to include them in their paintings. Among the artists who sought them for aesthetic innovation and perfection through East Asian art during the Aesthetic Movement, James Abbot McNeill Whistler was one who felt the most influence of East Asian art, and most successfully demonstrated and incorporated them into his own paintings. The oil painting Purple and Rose: The Lange Leizen of the Six Marks is a representational piece that displays Whistler’s taste and understanding towards East Asian art, through which the artist reveled in the joy of portraying pure aesthetic beauty, showing his enthusiasm for Oriental art. This paper approaches through a visual analysis of Whistler’s painting, The Lange Leizen of the Six Marks, to explicate the entanglements of Japonisme elements and blue and white porcelains, as well as the fantasized image of East Asia and China and the commonly stereotyped femininity associated with these objects.

Non-Invasive Study of Pigment Palette Used by Olga Boznańska Investigated with Analytical Imaging, XRF, and FTIR Spectroscopy

The scientific examination and comparative investigation of pigments are fundamental for further understanding and analysis of historic and artistic works, and particularly useful for conservators. In fine art authentication, investigations are strongly focused on the identification of the painting materials used by the author. This study is focused on the use of non-invasive analytical techniques to increase the knowledge of the painting technique of Olga Boznańska. The aim of this study was to assess the technology, painting technique, and materials used by Olga Boznańska. The pallets, tubes with the paints, and several oil paintings were studied. For each painting, a series of images were recorded using various ranges of electromagnetic radiation, including near-infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, and X-rays. In order to characterize the pigments present in the paint layer, measurements of the elemental composition by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) were carried out. The ground layers and paints were measured with infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). This allowed us to identify the artist’s painting technique and determine how she executed her painting, how she applied the paints, and what pigments she used.

The Future of China's Cultural and Creative Parks: Generating Highly Skilled Talent for the Oil Painting Industry

Since the 21st century, the Chinese oil painting industry has been an engine of growth in the global art industry. Its development is both an economic and social phenomenon in market transformation. This research aims to promote the sustainable development of Cultural and Creative Parks by generating a highly skilled workforce in the Chinese Oil Painting Industries. This research uses a literature review to explain the complex relationship between the Chinese Oil Painting Industries and Cultural and Creative Parks. The results of the research would include the role of the Chinese Oil Painting Industries in the evolution of Cultural and Creative Parks and the role of generating a highly skilled workforce for the Chinese Oil Painting Industries in promoting the sustainable development of Cultural and Creative Parks. The results are expected to lead towards recommending a format for generating a highly skilled workforce for Cultural and Creative Parks with the Chinese Oil Painting Industries at its core. Furthermore, this research will suggest a theory for generating a highly skilled workforce in the Chinese Oil Painting Industry that promotes sustainable development of Cultural and Creative Parks. This article attempts to review and evaluate the achievements of China's cultural and creative industries in the past 20 years from three perspectives: the current situation of the Chinese oil painting industry, the approach to cultivating a highly skilled workforce, and the development path of Cultural and Creative Parks. It is expected to provide a reference for later scholars to conduct related research.

Lead(II) Formate in Rembrandt's Night Watch: Detection and Distribution from the Macro- to the Micro-scale.

The Night Watch, painted in 1642 and on view in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, is considered Rembrandt's most famous work. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) mapping at multiple length scales revealed the unusual presence of lead(II) formate, Pb(HCOO)2 , in several areas of the painting. Until now, this compound was never reported in historical oil paints. In order to get insights into this phenomenon, one possible chemical pathway was explored thanks to the preparation and micro-analysis of model oil paint media prepared by heating linseed oil and lead(II) oxide (PbO) drier as described in 17th century recipes. Synchrotron radiation based micro-XRPD (SR-μ-XRPD) and infrared microscopy were combined to identify and map at the micro-scale various neo-formed lead-based compounds in these model samples. Both lead(II) formate and lead(II) formate hydroxide Pb(HCOO)(OH) were detected and mapped, providing new clues regarding the reactivity of lead driers in oil matrices in historical paintings.

Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Streamlines for Tandem Impeller in a Centrifugal Pump

Abstract Radial fluid machines with conventional impeller often lead to flow separation in the blade passage in case of high flow deflection. Tandem blades can be used to counteract this problem. Due to their properties, a new thin boundary layer forms at the rear blade profile, which benefits the deflection of the flow. The present investigation focuses on a comparison between numerical and experimental streamline patterns on the impellers blades suction side. For this purpose, a conventional impeller is compared with a tandem impeller. Furthermore, a method for creating oil painting patterns in a rotating system is presented. The numerical investigations were performed using a full model (including inlet section, impeller, volute, outlet section and impeller side gaps). A total of four operating points were examined in the range from high partial load to overload. The same operating points were run in a pump loop during the experiment. The results of the present work show that the numerically and experimentally generated streamline patterns agree well with exceptions. It could be shown that a flow separation of the blades suction side can be prevented using tandem blades.

Coatings containing molybdenum trisulphide QDs to protect oil paintings against different environmental factors

PurposeThis study aims to investigate profoundly the protection of oil painting from deterioration using molybdenum trisulphide quantum dots (MoS3 QDs) against microbe, dirt accumulation and ultraviolet (UV) degradation.Design/methodology/approachThe protection of painting against different deterioration factors necessitates the sustainable methods and advanced techniques. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy have been used to investigate the morphological structure of the painting and MoS3 QDs, respectively, and optical microscopy was used to examine antibacterial activity of MoS3 QDs towards different types of bacteria. To investigate the protection of painting against deterioration, the Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to investigate the paintings left in open air for a year. Chemical composition and crystal structure of MoS3 QDs have been studied using X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, respectively.FindingsThe addition of MoS3 nanoparticles into painted coatings enhances the durability of linseed oil-based paintings toward UV ageing regarding the change in colour which confirmed by FTIR analysis. The protection of oil painting opposed to various deterioration factors was developed by involving of MoS3 QDs in the coating of the painting. Antibacterial effect of MoS3 QDs was tested against different types of bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa confirming that the MoS3 QDs involved in the coatings of oil paintings produces a high protection layer for the paintings against several microbial attacks. In addition, coatings containing MoS3 QDs reduce the accumulation of dirt on oil paintings when subjected to open air for a year.Originality/valueThe novel MoS3 QDs was used to form a protective and transparent coating layer for the oil painting to overcome the deterioration, displays the promising protection and can be applied for different oil paintings.

Realist painting is one of the competencies that must be mastered to determine students' ability to paint with oil paints. Potential students who have talents and interests become the right place for each student's for self-development. Development of technology, social culture and the world of business, industry and work (DUDIKA), make an update on the curriculum. Learning conditions during the Covid-19 period which were carried out online learning required students to study independently. Differences in the abilities of students who have talents and interests require guidance during the pandemic. Preliminary observation, the percentage of completeness level of each student realist painting learning outcomes with avarge value of 40%, that makes researchers interested to research on Class. This research method is a classroom action research. The subject of this research were class XI SMK Negeri 1 Sukawati Student in the even semester 2020/2021 with the 30 people. Collecting data technique using primary data from the outcome learning assessment student and secondary data by field observation. Data analysis method with qualitative descriptive analysis method.The results of this research that The Application of Sketching Techniques with Carbon Paper, Improves Realist Painting Learning Outcomes for Class XI Students of SMK Negeri 1 Sukawati in the 2021/2022 Academic Year. This result can be seen from observation data of outcome learning assessment in the first cycle is average value of 79 and increasing to average value of 85 in the second cycle, percentage of completeness 77%, and increasing in second cycle with average value of 87% and 26 students declared completed.

On the Application of Costume Design Elements in Chinese Contemporary Oil Painting

An essential step in examining the evolution of contemporary Chinese painting is this study. Since the 80’s, the Chinese oil painting in a short span of 30 years, to copy the western oil painting genre from the original variety of evolution, after the test, the Chinese painter did not blindly copy the western model, but in a tolerant attitude, to the west and other multi-national cultures between compatible attitudes, try in the context of local self-innovation, with a new form of vitality and unusual speed. All kinds of different styles and artistic language forms emerge in an endless stream of changes. This paper adopts a qualitative research method case study to analyze the expression of costume design elements through visual art, such as popular colors, patterns, and ornamentation in contemporary Chinese painting, with the aim of studying the transformation of Chinese contemporary oil painting from the richness of visual form expression to the contemporaneity of ideological expression, which is of great significance in studying the visual presentation of Chinese contemporary painting art, exploring the laws of its creation and the comprehensiveness of artistic element expression. Contemporary Chinese society in the development of the economy is in a boom era, the breakthrough in advancing of science and technology, social and cultural prosperity and communication increasingly frequent, people’s thought is also more freedom and openness. The scientific novelty of this thesis lies in the artistic expression of works of contemporary Chinese oil painting art whether in the creation subject, creation way or in such aspects as a visual presentation reflecting the strong clothing elements. The characteristics not only conform to the characteristics of contemporary aesthetic culture, they are also an important symbol of the development of Chinese contemporary painting. Research on the Influence of the Aesthetics of Traditional Chinese Painting on Contemporary Oil Painting Landscape Creation

The aesthetic ideas and expression methods of traditional Chinese landscape painting influence all aspects of contemporary oil painting landscape creation. It not only guides oil painting creators to pay attention to environmental issues, return to nature, and explore cultural connotations, but also reminds oil painting creators to pursue both form and spirit and profound artistic effects while expressing nature. The uniqueness of oil painting creation is highlighted, and the artistic value is enhanced. This article analyzes the aesthetic expression of contemporary oil painting landscape creation and the similarities and differences between traditional Chinese painting and contemporary oil painting landscape painting. Based on refining the aesthetic values in traditional Chinese painting, it studies the impact of traditional Chinese painting aesthetics on contemporary oil painting landscape creation, providing reference for related research.

Design modification and performance evaluation of mini-hydrostatic pressure apparatus for inclined plane circular surface

Mini-Hydrostatic Pressure Apparatus (MHSPA), of spatial size 230×210×210 mm3, was developed for individual or limited number of users to promote Covid-19 social distance protocol. A solid hemisphere with an inclined circular segment made from gypsum material (CaSO2.0.5H2 O) and coated with filler putty and oil paint, is used in place of the regular quadrants. With the solid attached to a horizontal beam mounted over a pivot, hydrostatic forces due to liquids were measured at different heights of water. The results showed that the assembly could be used to demonstrate variation of hydrostatic pressure on circular surfaces at different heights of liquid with an average difference of 4.38% against average theoretical values. Compared to other results from the use of conventional quadrants in literature, the associated error is minimal, and indicates the possibility of adopting the apparatus in school laboratories for static pressure demonstration.

Anthropology in colors: from icon to Painting

Within the framework of this study, the transformation of anthropomorphic images in Medieval and Renaissance painting is analyzed. The visual art of this period is considered as a specific space of "conversation about man", which existed in parallel with discourses about God-man and Man-god. As a means of communication between man and God, the icon, using anthropomorphism in the image of the archetype, represented to the medieval man a certain path and a guide to his own salvation. Along with individual anthropomorphic and naturalistic features, areal ones were also used in iconography, for example, reverse perspective, halo, "twisting of figures" and a number of others that set the symbolic content of the religious image. В В According to the author, the transformation of the icon into a painting in the XIII-XIV centuries was associated not only with the technical development of fine art (the widespread use of direct perspective, the use of camera obscura and oil paints), but also with significant changes that occurred in the intellectual space of Europe. The narcissistic turn in Renaissance art, expressed in the dissolution of the boundaries between the human and the divine, the maximum naturalization of religious content, as well as in the development of self-portraits, is, first of all, a turn from the discourse about God-man to the discourse about Man-God. Relying on philosophical sources, two independent positions (Ficino and da Vinci) on the nature of metamorphosis and the place of pictorial images in the description and definition of man are considered.

Traces of water catalyze zinc soap crystallization in solvent-exposed oil paints.

The crystallization of metal soaps in polymer matrices is a complex process that affects the stability of oil paintings, as well as the properties of commercial ionomer materials. In the context of conservation of paintings, it is crucial to investigate the influence of solvent exposure on such detrimental chemical processes. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and a polymer model system that contains metastable amorphous zinc soaps, it is shown that water induces zinc soap crystallization, while solvent swelling alone has no effect. In particular fast-diffusing polar organic solvents with water impurities are able to induce extensive crystallization, delivering high concentrations of water quickly deep into paint layers. Finally, it is demonstrated, both with the model system and real oil paint samples, that even with very short solvent exposure times, significant quantities of crystalline zinc soaps are formed. This strong effect of water impurities in common solvents gives reason to be cautious when conservation treatments are being considered for oil paints that contain zinc white or other water-sensitive chemicals.

This article examines the work of the Chinese artist Jin Shangyi, one of the pioneers of oil painting in China. The creative experiments of the artist, his knowledge of European traditions in fine arts, and his assimilation of the Russian art school added the name of Jin Shangyi to the gallery of the best artists of modern China. This article considers the main domain of the artist’s work, mentions the most striking works in his artistic legacy, and analyzes the stages of his development. An important aspect in studying the artist’s work is an appeal to his literary notes, to analyze the creative goals that Jin Shangyi set himself. Through studying the technique of oil painting, and actively introducing this technique into the art education of China, Jin Shanyi was able to rationally rethink and highlight the most valuable parts in the Western European realist genre, Russian realism, and Western European modernism. The most important outcome of his work is that he was constantly in dialogue with the national traditions of China. His own artistic explorations led to the emergence of a new style of «neoclassicism», which subsequently gained wide popularity in the pictorial art of China

Multiscale style transfer based on a Laplacian pyramid for traditional Chinese painting

&lt;abstract&gt;&lt;p&gt;Style transfer is adopted to synthesize appealing stylized images that preserve the structure of a content image but carry the pattern of a style image. Many recently proposed style transfer methods use only western oil paintings as style images to achieve image stylization. As a result, unnatural messy artistic effects are produced in stylized images when using these methods to directly transfer the patterns of traditional Chinese paintings, which are composed of plain colors and abstract objects. Moreover, most of them work only at the original image scale and thus ignore multiscale image information during training. In this paper, we present a novel effective multiscale style transfer method based on Laplacian pyramid decomposition and reconstruction, which can transfer unique patterns of Chinese paintings by learning different image features at different scales. In the first stage, the holistic patterns are transferred at low resolution by adopting a Style Transfer Base Network. Then, the details of the content and style are gradually enhanced at higher resolutions by a Detail Enhancement Network with an edge information selection (EIS) module in the second stage. The effectiveness of our method is demonstrated through the generation of appealing high-quality stylization results and a comparison with some state-of-the-art style transfer methods.
