Performing animality

Considering performances with animals such as Going to the Dogs (Wim T. Schippers, 1986), Octavio and I (Linda Molenaar, 2010), Performances for Pets (Juurak/ Bailey 2014) and A Performance With an Ocean View (for a Dog) (Kokkonnen, 2008), I argue that these works illustrate three emergent effects of performing with animals: challenging a binary and exclusionary view of co-presence in performance; determining a modification of the performer’s interaction with a non- human animal audience; reversing the humanization of the animal, by rehearsing an animalization of human agency.

Experimental and Numerical Study of the Nonlinear Evolution of Regular Waves over a Permeable Submerged Breakwater

The permeable submerged breakwater has gained popularity in recent days due to its merits of reducing incident wave energy without negatively impacting the aesthetics of the ocean view and allowing for water exchange. However, the effect of porosity on wave nonlinearity and turbulence motion close to the water/structure interface is not well resolved in the literature. This paper presents an experimental and numerical study of regular wave propagation over a permeable submerged breakwater with a wide top width. The laboratory experiments were conducted in a wave flume and included 45 test cases. The numerical simulations were performed utilizing validated olaFoam. The results show that the nonlinearity of the waves on the permeable submerged breakwater is weak, which can effectively suppress and reduce the second harmonic waves. A large amount of turbulent kinetic energy exists at the interface between the permeable submerged breakwater and the water body, which helps to dissipate wave energy. For the wider permeable submerged breakwater in this paper, the wave dissipation capacity is greatest when the porosity is between 0.2 and 0.3, and as the length of the breakwater increases, the energy transmission coefficient decreases, and the energy dissipation coefficient increases. Better wave attenuation is achieved when the permeable submerged breakwater has a certain porosity and a large width.

This study aims to analyze tourism products and integrated marketing communications on visit decisions through visit motivation as an intervening variable in heha ocean view. This research is a quantitative research. The population used in the study were all tourists who visited Heha Ocean View, Gunungkidul Regency, totaling 80 people. Data collection techniques in this study used a questionnaire in the form of a questionnaire. The model analysis technique and hypothesis testing used by researchers is Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis with SmartPLS software. The results showed that tourism products had a significant positive effect on visit motivation, marketing communications had a significant positive effect on visit motivation, marketing communications had a significant positive effect on visit decisions, while visit motivation had a significant positive effect on visit decisions.

Modeling Artificial Light Exposure after Vegetation Trimming at a Marine Turtle Nesting Beach

Light pollution caused by poorly directed artificial lighting has increased globally in recent years. Artificial lights visible along marine turtle nesting beaches can disrupt natural brightness cues used by hatchling turtles to orient correctly to the ocean for their offshore migrations. Natural barriers, such as tall dunes and dense vegetation, that block coastal and inland lights from the beach may reduce this disruption. However, coastal areas are often managed toward human values, including the trimming of vegetation to improve ocean views. We used viewshed models to determine how reducing the dune vegetation height (specifically that of seagrape, Cocoloba uvifera) might increase the amount of artificial light from upland buildings that reaches a marine turtle nesting beach in Southeast Florida. We incorporated three data sets (LiDAR data, turtle nest locations, and field surveys of artificial lights) into a geographic information system to create viewsheds of lighting from buildings across 21 vegetation profiles. In 2018, when most seagrape patches had been trimmed to <1.1 m tall, female loggerhead turtles nested in areas with potential for high light exposure based on a cumulative viewshed model. Viewshed models using random (iterative simulations) and nonrandom selections of buildings revealed that untrimmed seagrape heights (mean = 3.1 m) and especially taller vegetation profiles effectively reduced potential lighting exposure from three building heights (upper story, midstory, and ground level). Even the tallest modeled vegetation, however, would fail to block lights from the upper stories of some tall buildings. Results from this study can support management decisions regarding the trimming of beach dune vegetation, any associated changes in the visibility of artificial lighting from the nesting areas, and modifications to existing lighting needed to mitigate light exposure.

Do views of offshore wind energy detract? A hedonic price analysis of the Block Island wind farm in Rhode Island

Social concern and disapproval of offshore wind by coastal communities causes delays and costs to offshore wind development. One concern is property value impacts stemming from a loss of pristine ocean views. We evaluate this concern using the Block Island Wind Farm (BIWF), the first of its kind in the United States. While the BIWF has fewer turbines than currently proposed offshore wind developments, it is situated about 26 km [16 miles] from the Rhode Island mainland, which is a policy relevant distance, given that proposed US developments tend to be 21–32 km from coastlines. Using properties from the mainland, we estimate difference-in-differences hedonic valuation models with treatment defined by views of BIWF. Across many specifications and samples, we find no evidence of negative impacts to property values. Coefficient estimates are both negative and positive, but none are statistically distinguishable from zero. We additionally estimate hedonic models using properties on Block Island, which is only 4.8 km from the BIWF, meaning the BIWF is more of a visually dominant feature there as compared to the mainland. These models similarly find insignificant effects of views. In sum, our findings suggest that the viewshed impacts of the BIWF were minimal.

Validation of the Effectiveness of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Detecting Impurities in Milk Powder using ANN and SVM

Nowadays, there are so many productions on the market that based on dairy product that include milk powder. The milk powder has different categories which is for children, adult and others. The milk powder involves the local product until the import product. The transparency of the content in the milk powder cannot be identified easily and can cause food poisoning to be happened. Hence, with the use of near-infrared spectroscopy, NIRS it can be use easily to detect the content in the food simply. There are many methods in NIRS which is reflectance and absorbance. This method being uses to detect which milk powder is adulterated. Ocean Optic XR-1 ES, USA device and Ocean View software have been used in this project to take data from the sample. The device use wavelength between 200nm-1025nm. The milk powder obtained from the supermarket and nearby stores. Data that have been taken then transferred into suitable table and will go through two different analysis method which is SVM and ANN. The reflection method is not suitable to detect the adulterated milk powder. From the result ANN shows the higher accuracy to classify the pure and Adulterant milk powder.

Photoluminesence study of undoped GaAs at temperatures 300 K and 77 K

This work presents an experimental study of photoluminescence spectra from GaAs thin layer at temperature 300 K and 77 K. PL spectra were used to investigate the characteristics of the material, such as the photon energy, gap energy, and the type of radiation transition. The apparatus used in the experiment are green laser with a wavelength of 532.0 nm, laser power supply, 500 mm focus lens, ocean optics USB 2000 spectrometer, fiber optic cable, USB cable, and the computer software installed ocean view and origin pro. The characterization was carried out at temperatures of 300 K and 77 K with power variation in the range 40 mW - 150 mW. The emitted spectrum was analyzed by observing the wavelength and calculating the photon energy and the gap energy. The results showed that laser power variation does not affect the emitted wavelength. However, it is affected by temperature. The emitted wavelength is 840 nm at 300 K and 790 nm at 77 K. The value of gap energy at 300 K is 1.422 eV while at temperature 77 K is 1.519 eV. The photon energy at temperatures 300 K and 77 K were 1.465 eV and 1.560 eV, respectively. The type of transition is a band-to-band transition at 300 K and Free Exciton (FE) at 77K. These results are consistent with existing theories, so the characterization of undoped GaAs has done successfully.

Engineered coastal berm-dune renourishment in New Jersey: can coastal communities continue to hold the line?

Following the significant coastal changes caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, engineered berm-dunes were constructed along the New Jersey coastline to enhance protection from future storms. Following construction, property values on Long Beach Island, NJ, increased in three beachfront communities. The projects were financed entirely through federal disaster assistance, but the percentage of future maintenance costs must be covered by local communities. Whether communities are willing or capable of financially contributing to maintenance remains unclear because (i) some homeowners prefer ocean views over the protection afforded by the berm-dune structures, and (ii) stakeholder risk perceptions can change over time. To investigate the relationships between berm-dune geometries, values of coastal protection, and ocean view values, we developed a geoeconomic model of the natural and anthropogenic processes that shape beach and dune morphology. The model results suggest that coastal communities may exhibit significant differences in their capabilities to maintain engineered dunes depending on stakeholder wealth and risk perception. In particular, communities with strong preferences for ocean views are less likely to maintain large-scale berm-dune structures over the long term. If these structures are abandoned, the vulnerability of the coast to future storms will increase.

Spatial multi-criteria evaluation in 3D context: suitability analysis of urban vertical development

ABSTRACT Urban densification is often seen as a process that aims to limit the negative environmental impacts of urban sprawl in rapidly growing cities by prioritizing planning policies stimulating vertical growth (or high-rise development) over expansion along the urban fringe. Densification of major Canadian urban areas has led to the proliferation of high-rises with an increasing proportion of residents occupying these buildings rather than traditional individual housing. Thus, there is a need for analytical methods that can evaluate the suitability of different residential units in vertical urban developments based on unique criteria for different stakeholders such as prospective residents, developers, or municipal planners. Multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) analysis with weighted linear combination (WLC) is frequently implemented in geographic information systems (GIS) to identify the appropriate solution(s) for a decision problem. However, there are currently no available MCE methods for spatial analysis that can provide evaluation in a three-dimensional (3D) GIS environment, such as for urban vertical development. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to propose a 3D WLC-MCE suitability analysis method for suitability of high-rise residential units in a dense urban area. Five preference scenarios were developed and applied to data from City of Vancouver, Canada. The results indicate that south-facing units and units on higher floors generally exhibit higher levels of suitability as they are less affected by the noise and pollution of the urban road network and receive more sunlight and ocean views. The proposed 3D MCE approach can be used for urban planning and property tax assessment.

However, industrial disputes between workers and employers are often a problem. Therefore we need a set of laws that can be a separate forum for dealing with dispute matters within a company, is Bipartite Cooperative. The problem raised in this paper is how the effectiveness of the Bipartite Institute and what are the things that hamper in resolving employment issues at PT New Kuta Golf and Ocean View. The research method used is an empirical legal research method through the sociology of law approach. The results obtained, that is about disputes that have occurred in the company namely working conditions, requirements of work, increased work productivity and welfare of workers who impact on the company. The form of settlement is done through Bipartite and termination of employment. The inhibiting factors found were weak mindset, limited information, lack of competent human resources towards understanding Bipartite.

Lessons from a high-CO<sub>2</sub> world: an ocean view from ∼ 3 million years ago

Abstract. A range of future climate scenarios are projected for high atmospheric CO2 concentrations, given uncertainties over future human actions as well as potential environmental and climatic feedbacks. The geological record offers an opportunity to understand climate system response to a range of forcings and feedbacks which operate over multiple temporal and spatial scales. Here, we examine a single interglacial during the late Pliocene (KM5c, ca. 3.205±0.01 Ma) when atmospheric CO2 exceeded pre-industrial concentrations, but were similar to today and to the lowest emission scenarios for this century. As orbital forcing and continental configurations were almost identical to today, we are able to focus on equilibrium climate system response to modern and near-future CO2. Using proxy data from 32 sites, we demonstrate that global mean sea-surface temperatures were warmer than pre-industrial values, by ∼2.3 ∘C for the combined proxy data (foraminifera Mg∕Ca and alkenones), or by ∼3.2–3.4 ∘C (alkenones only). Compared to the pre-industrial period, reduced meridional gradients and enhanced warming in the North Atlantic are consistently reconstructed. There is broad agreement between data and models at the global scale, with regional differences reflecting ocean circulation and/or proxy signals. An uneven distribution of proxy data in time and space does, however, add uncertainty to our anomaly calculations. The reconstructed global mean sea-surface temperature anomaly for KM5c is warmer than all but three of the PlioMIP2 model outputs, and the reconstructed North Atlantic data tend to align with the warmest KM5c model values. Our results demonstrate that even under low-CO2 emission scenarios, surface ocean warming may be expected to exceed model projections and will be accentuated in the higher latitudes.

Impact of Spatial Scale of Ocean Views Architecture on Tourist Experience and Empathy Mediation Based on “SEM-ANP” Combined Analysis

Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.In this study, we have first set up the relational model on the spatial scale of ocean views architecture, tourist emotion, perspective taking and comprehensive evaluation of tourist experience based on the “SEM-ANP” research method. Subsequently, we have proposed the feature of elements, selection of paths and relation of weights applicable to the evaluation of ocean views architecture. Finally, we have carried out the empirical test on our proposal. The results show that: (1) Empathy has a mediating effect on “spatial scale of ocean views construction - comprehensive evaluation of tourist experience”; (2) It is necessary to fully investigate the characteristics of tourist mood and perspective taking during ocean views construction; (3) The “four-step” strategy can be adopted in the evaluation of ocean views construction. In the end, we have put forward the coping measures for evaluating ocean views construction that take into account both the spatial design and the psychological characteristics of tourists subsequent to our study on the influence of the spatial scale of ocean views architecture on the tourist experience.

Spatial and Temporal Variations in SO2 and PM2.5 Levels Around Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai'i During 2007–2018

Among the hazards posed by volcanoes are the emissions of gases and particles that can affect air quality and damage agriculture and infrastructure. A recent intense episode of volcanic degassing associated with severe impacts on air quality accompanied the 2018 lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) eruption of Kīlauea volcano, Hawai'i. This resulted in a major increase in gas emission rates with respect to usual emission values for this volcano, along with a shift in the source of the dominant plume to a populated area on the lower flank of the volcano. This led to reduced air quality in downwind communities. We analyse open-access data from the permanent air quality monitoring networks operated by the Hawai'i Department of Health (HDOH) and National Park Service (NPS), and report on measurements of atmospheric sulfur dioxide (SO2) between 2007 and 2018 and PM2.5 (aerosol particulate matter with diameter <2.5 μm) between 2010 and 2018. Additional air quality data were collected through a community-operated network of low-cost PM2.5 sensors during the 2018 LERZ eruption. From 2007 to 2018 the two most significant escalations in Kīlauea's volcanic emissions were: the summit eruption that began in 2008 (Kīlauea emissions averaged 5–6 kt/day SO2 from 2008 until summit activity decreased in May 2018) and the LERZ eruption in 2018 when SO2 emission rates reached a monthly average of 200 kt/day during June. In this paper we focus on characterizing the airborne pollutants arising from the 2018 LERZ eruption and the spatial distribution and severity of volcanic air pollution events across the Island of Hawai'i. The LERZ eruption caused the most frequent and severe exceedances of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) PM2.5 air quality threshold (35 μg/m3 as a daily average) in Hawai'i in the period 2010–2018. In Kona, for example, the maximum 24-h-mean mass concentration of PM2.5 was recorded as 59 μg/m3 on the twenty-ninth of May 2018, which was one of eight recorded exceedances of the EPA air quality threshold during the 2018 LERZ eruption, where there had been no exceedances in the previous 8 years as measured by the HDOH and NPS networks. SO2 air pollution during the LERZ eruption was most severe in communities in the south and west of the island, as measured by selected HDOH and NPS stations in this study, with a maximum 24-h-mean mass concentration of 728 μg/m3 recorded in Ocean View (100 km west of the LERZ emission source) in May 2018. Data from the low-cost sensor network correlated well with data from the HDOH PM2.5 instruments, confirming that these low-cost sensors provide a robust means to augment reference-grade instrument networks.

Keep wind projects close? A case study of distance, culture, and cost in offshore and onshore wind energy siting

We use a conjoint-based discrete choice survey to examine willingness-to-accept of different characteristics of hypothetical wind projects. Our study includes participants from two Massachusetts (U.S.) coastal municipalities (Gloucester and Rockport) that have an existing onshore wind project (n = 192). Participants were presented with several alternatives for new wind projects with varying attributes including: town location, site within the location (and thus distance from a participant's home), savings on a participant's energy bill, and increased tax revenue. We find little evidence that participants preferred living far from projects, even within 1 mile. Participants preferred onshore to offshore projects, and required $17/month of compensation to be willing to accept an offshore project. This result may have been driven by the coastal community's prior positive experience with an existing onshore wind project, as well as a cultural identity that favors unobstructed ocean views. Our results further the understanding of the perceived costs of living near wind projects and provide insights to developers and policymakers on how best to increase installed capacity of wind energy.

Monitoring and mitigation of toxic heavy metals and arsenic accumulation in food crops: A case study of an urban community garden.

Urban community gardens have increased in prevalence as a means to generate fresh fruits and vegetables, including in areas lacking access to healthy food options. However, urban soils may have high levels of toxic heavy metals, including lead and cadmium and the metalloid arsenic, which can lead to severe health risks. In this study, fruit and vegetable samples grown at an urban community garden in southeastern San Diego, the Ocean View Growing Grounds, were sampled repeatedly over a four‐year time period in order to measure potential contamination of toxic heavy metals and metalloids and to develop solutions for this problem. Metal nutrient, heavy metal, and metalloid concentrations were monitored in the leaf and fruit tissues of fruit trees over the sampling period. Several of the fruit trees showed uptake of lead in the leaf samples, with Black Mission fig measuring 0.843–1.531 mg/kg dry weight and Mexican Lime measuring 1.103–1.522 mg/kg dry weight over the sampling period. Vegetables that were grown directly in the ground at this community garden and surrounding areas showed arsenic, 0.80 + 0.073 mg/kg dry weight for Swiss chard, and lead, 0.84 ± 0.404 mg/kg dry weight for strawberries, in their edible tissues. The subsequent introduction of raised beds with uncontaminated soil is described, which eliminated any detectable heavy metal or metalloid contamination in these crops during the monitoring period. Recommendations for facilitating the monitoring of edible tissues and for reducing risk are discussed, including introduction of raised beds and collaborations with local universities and research groups.

A comparative study on the value of scenic views between an inland and a coastal city in Korea

ABSTRACTThis study estimates hedonic house price models for an inland city of Seoul and a coastal city of Pusan using spatial regression with successful bidding price data of court auction during the period from January 2006 to December 2014. Among hedonic attributes such as floor area, building age, total floor level, living floor level, direction of the window of the living room, proximity to natural environment, scenic views and others employed in this study, our main focus is on scenic views. As a result of our empirical analysis, the most preferred view turns out to be a water-related view such as a broad river view in Seoul or an ocean view in Pusan. A mountain view, affecting negatively in a coastal city like Pusan which is adjacent to the beautiful ocean, has positive influence in Seoul, since it is an inland city with no ocean in sight with only a river running across the heart of the city which is surrounded by mountains serving as its boundary. While a building view in Seoul has negative effect on the price, it affects positively in Pusan.
