The practice of shipping makes extensive use of the experience of landing small vessels on the ground. This practice is very important for the development of Vietnam's marine infrastructure. As the size of vessels increases, contact loads and probability of damage to hulls increase as well. A number of classification societies consider and make this part of design requirements. In this article, the authors attempted to analyze the specifics of such vessels, to compare the requirements of classification societies, and to identify their shortcomings with a view to the subsequent development of design techniques. Vietnam's shipbuilding should also make good use of the other countries’ experience for further development of tourism and infrastructure. A comparison of the wind and wave conditions of the coasts of Vietnam and Russia showed the capability and expediency of taking into account the Russian experience. Cases of damage to the vessel hulls at the contacts with the ground and repairs are considered. The important role of external structural protection in enhancing the reliability of such vessels, which does not receive enough attention, is noted. Keywords: landing on the ground, damages, design techniques, external structural protection, Vietnam's maritime infrastructure.
