Leptohadronic Scenarios for TeV Extensions of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglow Spectra

Recent multiwavelength observations of gamma-ray burst afterglows observed in the TeV energy range challenge the simplest synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) interpretation of this emission and are consistent with a single power-law component spanning over 8 orders of magnitude in energy. To interpret this generic behavior in the single-zone approximation without adding further free parameters, we perform an exhaustive parameter space study using the public, time-dependent, multimessenger transport software AM 3 . This description accounts for the radiation from nonthermal protons and the leptohadronic cascade induced by pp and p γ interactions. We summarise the main scenarios that we have found (SSC, Extended-syn, Proton-syn, pp-cascade, and pγ-cascade) and discuss their advantages and limitations. We find that possible high-density environments, as may be typical for surrounding molecular cloud material, offer an alternative explanation for producing flat hard (source) spectra up to and beyond energies of 10 TeV.

Synchrotron Polarization of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglow Shocks with Hydrodynamic-scale Turbulent Magnetic Field

Afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are emitted from expanding forward shocks, which are expected to have magnetic fields much stronger than the interstellar field, although the origin of the field is a long-standing problem. Two field amplification mechanisms, plasma kinetic instabilities and magnetohydrodynamic instabilities, have been discussed so far. The coherence-length scales of the fields amplified by these two processes are different by 7–10 orders of magnitude, and the polarimetric observations may distinguish them. We construct a semi-analytic model of the forward-shock afterglow polarization under the assumption of hydrodynamic-scale turbulent magnetic field. We perform numerical calculations of synchrotron polarization for the isotropic turbulence and the zero viewing angle. We find that the polarization degrees are ∼1% when the field coherence-length scale in the fluid co-moving frame is of the order of the thickness of the shocked regions. This range of polarization degree is comparable to that of the observed late-phase optical afterglows. Our model also shows that the radio polarization degrees are comparable to the optical ones on average but can be higher than the optical ones at some time intervals. The polarization angles are shown to vary randomly and continuously. These polarimetric properties are clearly different from the case of plasma kinetic instability. Simultaneous polarimetric observations of GRB afterglows at the radio and optical bands have recently started, which will help us constrain the magnetic field amplification mechanism.

Photometric and Spectroscopic Observations of GRB 210104A: Bright Reverse-shock Emission and Dense Circumburst Environment

Early afterglow observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are valuable for exploring the properties of their jets and ambient medium. We report our photometric and spectroscopic observations of GRB 210104A and discuss its jet properties with multiwavelength data. Our spectroscopic observation reveals several absorption features and a tentative redshift of 0.46 is identified. A bright optical flare that has a peak brightness of R = 13 mag at 112 ± 7 s was observed in the R band during 67 ∼ 165 s post the GRB trigger. The flux of the R-band afterglow decays with a slope of α O = − 0.91 ± 0.03 at t > 650 s. The early X-ray afterglow lightcurve is a smooth bump, and it decays with a slope of α X = −1.18 ± 0.01 at late epoch. Our joint spectral fit to the optical-X-ray afterglows during (1.1–1.3) × 104 s yields a photon index ΓO,X = −1.82 ± 0.04. The derived host galaxy extinction is A R = 0.87. Attributing the early optical flare to the reverse-shock (RS) emission and the late optical-X-ray emission to the forward shock emission, the optical and X-ray lightcurves at t < 3 × 104 s can be well fit adopting a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Comparing the properties of GRB 210104A with other GRBs that have detection of bright RS emission, we show that its jet is mildly magnetized (R B = 28), with high radiation efficiency (77%), is subenergetic (E k,iso = 4.5 × 1051 erg), and moderately relativistic (Γ0 ∼ 35) in a density medium (n 0 ∼ 417 cm−3). It follows the tight L γ,iso–E p,z–Γ0 relation as with typical GRBs.

The Implications of TeV-detected GRB Afterglows for Acceleration at Relativistic Shocks

Abstract Motivated by the detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays deep in the afterglow emission of a gamma-ray burst (GRB), we revisit predictions of the maximum energy to which electrons can be accelerated at a relativistic blast wave. Acceleration at the weakly magnetized forward shock of a blast wave can be limited by either the rapid damping of turbulence generated behind the shock, the effect of a large-scale ambient magnetic field, or radiation losses. Within the confines of a standard, single-zone, synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model, we show that observations of GRB 190829A rule out a rapid damping of the downstream turbulence. Furthermore, simultaneous fits to the X-ray and TeV gamma-ray emission of this object are not possible unless the limit on acceleration imposed by the ambient magnetic field is comparable to or weaker than that imposed by radiation losses. This requires the dominant length scale of the turbulence behind the shock to be larger than that implied by particle-in-cell simulations. However, even then, Klein–Nishina effects prevent production of the hard VHE gamma-ray spectrum suggested by observations. Thus, TeV observations of GRB afterglows, though still very sparse, are already in tension with the SSC emission scenario.

Multi-wave band Synchrotron Polarization of Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows

Abstract Multi-wave band synchrotron linear polarization of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows is studied under the assumption of an anisotropic turbulent magnetic field with a coherence length of the plasma skin-depth scale in the downstream of forward shocks. We find that for typical GRBs, in comparison to optical polarization, the degree of radio polarization shows a similar temporal evolution but a significantly smaller peak value. This results from differences in observed intensity image shapes between the radio and optical bands. We also show that the degree of the polarization spectrum undergoes a gradual variation from the low- to the high-polarization regime above the intensity of the spectral peak frequency, and that the difference in polarization angles in the two regimes is zero or 90°. Thus, simultaneous multi-wave band polarimetric observations of GRB afterglows would be a new determinative test of the plasma-scale magnetic field model. We also discuss theoretical implications from the recent detection of radio linear polarization in GRB 171205A with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and other models of magnetic field configuration.

Neutrino Production Associated with Late Bumps in Gamma-Ray Bursts and Potential Contribution to Diffuse Flux at IceCube

Abstract IceCube has detected many TeV–PeV neutrinos, but their astrophysical origins remain largely unknown. Motivated by the observed late-time X-ray/optical bumps in some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we examine the correlation between IceCube neutrinos and GRBs allowing delayed neutrinos ∼days after the prompt gamma-rays. Although we have not found any definitive correlation, up to ∼10% of the events observed so far at IceCube may have been neutrinos produced by the late-time GRB activities at ∼1 day. Assuming a connection between some IceCube events and the late GRB bumps, we show in a model-independent way that GRB sites capable of producing late ∼PeV neutrinos should be nonrelativistic or mildly relativistic. We estimate the diffuse neutrino flux from such sources and find that they can possibly account for a few IceCube events. Future observations of high-energy neutrinos and late-time GRB afterglows can further test the above proposed connection.

The Benefit of Simultaneous Seven-filter Imaging: 10 Years of GROND Observations**Based on observations made with ESO Telescopes at the La Silla Paranal Observatory under programme ID 292.D-5029(A).

A variety of scientific results have been achieved over the last 10 years with the GROND simultaneous 7-channel imager at the 2.2 m telescope of the Max-Planck Society at ESO/La Silla. While designed primarily for rapid observations of gamma-ray burst afterglows, the combination of simultaneous imaging in the Sloan g′r′i′z′ and near-infrared JHKs bands at a medium-sized (2.2 m) telescope and the very flexible scheduling possibility has resulted in an extensive use for many other astrophysical research topics, from exoplanets and accreting binaries to galaxies and quasars.

Dust reddening and extinction curves toward gamma-ray bursts at z &gt; 4

Context. Dust is known to be produced in the envelopes of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, the expanded shells of supernova (SN) remnants, and in situ grain growth within the interstellar medium (ISM), although the corresponding efficiency of each of these dust formation mechanisms at different redshifts remains a topic of debate. During the first Gyr after the Big Bang, it is widely believed that there was not enough time to form AGB stars in high numbers, hence the dust at this epoch is expected to be purely from SNe or subsequent grain growth in the ISM. The time period corresponding to z ~ 5−6 is thus expected to display the transition from SN-only dust to a mixture of both formation channels as is generally recognized at present. Aims. Here we aim to use afterglow observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at redshifts larger than z &gt; 4 to derive host galaxy dust column densities along their line of sight and to test if a SN-type dust extinction curve is required for some of the bursts. Methods. We performed GRB afterglow observations with the seven-channel Gamma-Ray Optical and Near-infrared Detector (GROND) at the 2.2 m MPI telescope in La Silla, Chile (ESO), and we combined these observations with quasi-simultaneous data gathered with the XRT telescope on board the Swift satellite. Results. We increase the number of measured AV values for GRBs at z &gt; 4 by a factor of ~2–3 and find that, in contrast to samples at mostly lower redshift, all of the GRB afterglows have a visual extinction of AV &lt; 0.5 mag. Analysis of the GROND detection thresholds and results from a Monte Carlo simulation show that although we partly suffer from an observational bias against highly extinguished sight-lines, GRB host galaxies at 4 &lt; z &lt; 6 seem to contain on average less dust than at z ~ 2. Additionally, we find that all of the GRBs can be modeled with locally measured extinction curves and that the SN-like dust extinction curve, as previously found toward GRB 071025, provides a better fit for only two of the afterglow SEDs. However, because of the lack of highly extinguished sight lines and the limited wavelength coverage we cannot distinguish between the different scenarios. For the first time we also report a photometric redshift of zphot = 7.88-0.94+0.75 for GRB 100905A, making it one of the most distant GRBs known to date.

A possible relation between flare activity in super-luminous supernovae and gamma-ray bursts

Significant undulations appear in the light curve of a recently discovered super-luminous supernova (SLSN) SN 2015bn after the first peak, while the underlying profile of the light curve can be well explained by a continuous energy supply from a central engine, possibly the spin-down of a millisecond magnetar. We propose that these undulations are caused by an intermittent pulsed energy supply, indicating an energetic flare activity of the central engine of the SLSN. Many post-burst flares were discovered during X-ray afterglow observations of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). We find that the SLSN flares described here approximately obey the empirical correlation between the luminosity and time scale of GRB flares, extrapolated to the relevant longer time scales of SLSN flares. This confirms the possible connection between these two different phenomena as previously suggested.

Gamma-ray bursts from massive Population-III stars: clues from the radio band

Current models suggest gamma-ray bursts could be used as a way of probing Population III stars - the first stars in the early Universe. In this paper we use numerical simulations to demonstrate that late time radio observations of gamma-ray burst afterglows could provide a means of identifying bursts that originate from Population III stars, if these were highly massive, independently from their redshift. We then present the results from a pilot study using the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 17 GHz, designed to test the hypothesis that there may be Population III gamma-ray bursts amongst the current sample of known events. We observed three candidates plus a control gamma-ray burst, and make no detections with upper limits of 20-40 uJy at 500-1300 days post explosion.

ENERGY INJECTION IN GAMMA-RAY BURST AFTERGLOWS

We present multi-wavelength observations and modeling of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) that exhibit a simultaneous re-brightening in their X-ray and optical light curves, and are also detected at radio wavelengths. We show that the re-brightening episodes can be modeled by injection of energy into the blastwave and that in all cases the energy injection rate falls within the theoretical bounds expected for a distribution of energy with ejecta Lorentz factor. Our measured values of the circumburst density, jet opening angle, and beaming corrected kinetic energy are consistent with the distribution of these parameters for long-duration GRBs at both z~1 and z>6, suggesting that the jet launching mechanism and environment of these events are similar to that of GRBs that do not have bumps in their light curves. However, events exhibiting re-brightening episodes have lower radiative efficiencies than average, suggesting that a majority of the kinetic energy of the outflow is carried by slow-moving ejecta, which is further supported by steep measured distributions of the ejecta energy as a function of Lorentz factor. We do not find evidence for reverse shocks over the energy injection period, implying that the onset of energy injection is a gentle process. We further show that GRBs exhibiting simultaneous X-ray and optical re-brightenings are likely the tail of a distribution of events with varying rates of energy injection, forming the most extreme events in their class. Future X-ray observations of GRB afterglows with Swift and its successors will thus likely discover several more such events, while radio follow-up and multi-wavelength modeling of similar events will unveil the role of energy injection in GRB afterglows.

Short-Duration Gamma-Ray Bursts

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) display a bimodal duration distribution with a separation between the short- and long-duration bursts at about 2 s. The progenitors of long GRBs have been identified as massive stars based on their association with Type Ic core-collapse supernovae (SNe), their exclusive location in star-forming galaxies, and their strong correlation with bright UV regions within their host galaxies. Short GRBs have long been suspected on theoretical grounds to arise from compact object binary mergers (neutron star–neutron star or neutron star–black hole). The discovery of short GRB afterglows in 2005 provided the first insight into their energy scale and environments, as well as established a cosmological origin, a mix of host-galaxy types, and an absence of associated SNe. In this review, I summarize nearly a decade of short GRB afterglow and host-galaxy observations and use this information to shed light on the nature and properties of their progenitors, the energy scale and collimation of the relativistic outflow, and the properties of the circumburst environments. The preponderance of the evidence points to compact object binary progenitors, although some open questions remain. On the basis of this association, observations of short GRBs and their afterglows can shed light on the on- and off-axis electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources from the Advanced LIGO/Virgo experiments.

Applying an accurate spherical model to gamma-ray burst afterglow observations

We present results of model fits to afterglow data sets of GRB970508, GRB980703 and GRB070125, characterized by long and broadband coverage. The model assumes synchrotron radiation (including self-absorption) from a spherical adiabatic blast wave and consists of analytic flux prescriptions based on numerical results. For the first time it combines the accuracy of hydrodynamic simulations through different stages of the outflow dynamics with the flexibility of simple heuristic formulas. The prescriptions are especially geared towards accurate description of the dynamical transition of the outflow from relativistic to Newtonian velocities in an arbitrary power-law density environment. We show that the spherical model can accurately describe the data only in the case of GRB970508, for which we find a circumburst medium density consistent with a stellar wind. We investigate in detail the implied spectra and physical parameters of that burst. For the microphysics we show evidence for equipartition between the fraction of energy density carried by relativistic electrons and magnetic field. We also find that for the blast wave to be adiabatic, the fraction of electrons accelerated at the shock has to be smaller than 1. We present best-fit parameters for the afterglows of all three bursts, including uncertainties in the parameters of GRB970508, and compare the inferred values to those obtained by different authors.

ON PARTICLE ACCELERATION RATE IN GAMMA-RAY BURST AFTERGLOWS

It is well known that collisionless shocks are major sites of particle acceleration in the Universe, but the details of the acceleration process are still not well understood. The particle acceleration rate, which can shed light on the acceleration process, is rarely measured in astrophysical environments. Here we use observations of gamma-ray burst afterglows, which are weakly magnetized relativistic collisionless shocks in ion-electron plasma, to constrain the rate of particle acceleration in such shocks. We find, based on X-ray and GeV afterglows, an acceleration rate that is most likely very fast, approaching the Bohm limit, when the shock Lorentz factor is in the range of 10-100. In that case X-ray observations may be consistent with no amplification of the magnetic field in the shock upstream region. We examine the X-ray afterglow of GRB 060729, which is observed for 642 days showing a sharp decay in the flux starting about 400 days after the burst, when the shock Lorentz factor is about 5. We find that inability to accelerate X-ray emitting electrons at late time provides a natural explanation for the sharp decay, and that also in that case acceleration must be rather fast, and cannot be more than a 100 times slower than the Bohm limit. We conclude that particle acceleration is most likely fast in GRB afterglows, at least as long as the blast wave is ultra-relativistic.

A RADIO-SELECTED SAMPLE OF GAMMA-RAY BURST AFTERGLOWS

We present a catalog of radio afterglow observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) over a 14 year period from 1997 to 2011. Our sample of 304 afterglows consists of 2995 flux density measurements (including upper limits) at frequencies between 0.6 GHz and 660 GHz, with the majority of data taken at 8.5 GHz frequency band (1539 measurements). We use this dataset to carry out a statistical analysis of the radio-selected sample. The detection rate of radio afterglows has stayed unchanged almost at 31% before and after the launch of the {\em Swift} satellite. The canonical long-duration GRB radio light curve at 8.5 GHz peaks at 3-6 days in the source rest frame, with a median peak luminosity of $10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$. The peak radio luminosities for short-hard bursts, X-ray flashes and the supernova-GRB classes are an order of magnitude or more fainter than this value. There are clear relationships between the detectability of a radio afterglow and the fluence or energy of a GRB, and the X-ray or optical brightness of the afterglow. However, we find few significant correlations between these same GRB and afterglow properties and the peak radio flux density. We also produce synthetic light curves at centimeter (cm) and millimeter (mm) bands using a range of blastwave and microphysics parameters derived from multiwavelength afterglow modeling, and we use them to compare to the radio sample. Finding agreement, we extrapolate this behavior to predict the cm and mm behavior of GRBs observed by the Expanded Very Large Array and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array.

POPULATION III GAMMA-RAY BURST AFTERGLOWS: CONSTRAINTS ON STELLAR MASSES AND EXTERNAL MEDIUM DENSITIES

Population III stars are theoretically expected to be prominent around redshifts z ~ 20, consisting of mainly very massive stars with M_* >~ 10 M_sun$, but there is no direct observational evidence for these objects. They may produce collapsar gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), with jets driven by magnetohydrodynamic processes, whose total isotropic-equivalent energy could be as high as E_iso >~ 10^{57} erg over a cosmological-rest-frame duration of t_d >~ 10^4 s, depending on the progenitor mass. Here we calculate the afterglow spectra of such Pop. III GRBs based on the standard external shock model, and show that they will be detectable with the Swift BAT/XRT and Fermi LAT instruments. We find that in some cases a spectral break due to electron-positron pair creation will be observable in the LAT energy range, which can put constraints on the ambient density of the pre-collapse Pop. III star. Thus, high redshift GRB afterglow observations could be unique and powerful probes of the properties of Pop. III stars and their environments. We examine the trigger threshold of the BAT instrument in detail, focusing on the image trigger system, and show that the prompt emission of Pop. III GRBs could also be detected by BAT. Finally we briefly show that the late-time radio afterglows of Pop. III GRBs for typical parameters, despite the large distances, can be very bright: ~ 140 mJy at 1 GHz, which may lead to a constraint on the Pop. III GRB rate from the current radio survey data, and ~2.4 mJy at 70 MHz, which implies that Pop. III GRB radio afterglows could be interesting background source candidates for 21 cm absorption line detections.

Multiwavelength observations of GRB afterglows

AbstractMultiwavelength observations of gamma-ray burst afterglows are presented, in particular those in the optical and millimetre wavelengths. I will focus on the observations mostly carried out at Spanish ground-based observatories (mainly the 10.4m GTC) and at the Plateau de Bure Interferometer in the French Alps. The importance of global networks of robotic telescopes (like BOOTES, established worldwide) for early time observations in order to put constraints on the physical mechanisms of the GRB early time emission phase is also discussed. The overall observational efforts provide additional clues for a better understanding of the reverse and forward shock. Finally I will report on the Lomonosov/UFFO-p capabilities taking into account its launch in 2012.

Hard electron energy distribution in the relativistic shocks of gamma-ray burst afterglows

Particle acceleration in relativistic shocks is not a very well understood subject. Owing to that difficulty, radiation spectra from relativistic shocks, such as those in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, have been often modelled by making assumptions about the underlying electron distribution. One such assumption is a relatively soft distribution of the particle energy, which need not be true always, as is obvious from observations of several GRB afterglows. In this paper, we describe modifications to the afterglow standard model to accommodate energy spectra which are ‘hard’. We calculate the overall evolution of the synchrotron and Compton flux arising from such a distribution. We also model two afterglows, GRB010222 and GRB020813, under this assumption and estimate the physical parameters.

GROND—a 7-Channel Imager

ABSTRACTWe describe the construction of GROND, a 7-channel imager, primarily designed for rapid observations of gamma-ray burst afterglows. It allows simultaneous imaging in the Sloan g′ r′ i′ z′ and near-infrared JHK bands. GROND was commissioned at the MPI/ESO 2.2 m telescope at La Silla (Chile) in April 2007, and first results of its performance and calibration are presented.

Are the missing X-ray breaks in gamma-ray burst afterglow light curves merely hidden?

Gamma-ray burst afterglow observations in the Swift era have a perceived lack of achromatic jet breaks compared to the BeppoSAX, or pre-Swift era. Specifically, relatively few breaks, consistent with jet breaks, are observed in the X-ray light curves of these bursts. If these breaks are truly missing, it has serious consequences for the interpretation of GRB jet collimation and energy requirements, and the use of GRBs as cosmological tools. Here we address the issue of X-ray breaks that are possibly `hidden' and hence the light curves are misinterpreted as being single power laws. We do so by synthesising XRT light curves and fitting both single and broken power laws, and comparing the relative goodness of each fit via Monte Carlo analysis. Even with the well sampled light curves of the Swift era, these breaks may be left misidentified, hence caution is required when making definite statements on the absence of achromatic breaks.
