Feasibility, effectiveness, and perceptions of an Internet-and incentive-based behavioral weight loss intervention for overweight and obese college freshmen: A mixed methods approach

Challenges inherent with the transition to college are often accompanied by weight gain among college freshmen. Weight gain and duration of obesity increase metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease risk in young adulthood, which supports the need for weight loss interventions tailored to college students. The purpose of this investigation was to conduct a mixed methods pilot trial to determine the efficacy and acceptability of a semester long Internet-and incentive-based weight loss intervention for overweight/obese college freshmen. Participants (n = 27, aged >18 yrs, BMI >25) were randomly assigned to a 12-week social cognitive theory (SCT)-based intervention (Fit Freshmen [FF]) or a health information control group. The FF intervention also included modest financial incentives for weight loss. Primary outcomes included body weight/composition, dietary and physical activity (PA) behaviors, and psychosocial measures (i.e. self-efficacy, self-regulation) associated with diet, PA, and weight loss. • Brief motivational interventions have been found to be efficacious for obesity in older adult populations. • Brief motivational interventions including delivery of personalized feedback have been found to be efficacious for reducing college student drinking. • First study to test the efficacy of a one-session, brief motivational intervention for obesity among college students. • One session brief motivational interventions may have an impact on the reduction of calorie-dense foods and beverages. • A brief, one-session motivational interview with personalized feedback may not be an intensive enough intervention for obesity treatment among college students. Young adults are at an increased risk for weight gain as they begin college and this has implications for the onset of future health consequences. Brief motivational interventions (BMIs) have been found to be effective with college students for reducing risky health behaviours such as alcohol consumption, but have not been developed and tested with a primary goal of reducing obesity. BMIs have been developed and tested for the treatment of obesity and weight-related health behaviours (WRHB) in other populations, such as adults and adolescents, with promising results. The purpose of the following study was to develop and test the efficacy of a BMI for weight loss among overweight and obese college students. Seventy undergraduate students (85.7% female, 57.1% African-American) completed an assessment about WRHBs and then were randomized to either receive a single 60-min BMI plus a booster phone call or to assessment only. At 3 months post-intervention, effect sizes within the intervention group were twice as large as within the assessment-only group on reductions in high-calorie foods and beverages. However, there were no statistically significant differences between groups on body mass index or WRHBs. The one-session nature of the session might not have been enough to produce significant change in weight.

1. Objectives: Though the eating habits have improved and the living method has become convenient according to the economic growth thanks to the modern industrialization, because of the lack of exercise, obesity, wrong eating habits and stress etc, various symptoms of disease of adults are on the rise. Methods: In this research we have checked the weights, fat rates, fat weight, abdominal fat rate, blood pressure, and BMI over the objects of the women that were diagnosed as lunisolar system as their physical constitution, and assessed the paramecium lipid, in-blood antioxidation enzyme and the damage of oxidization in the urine by physical constitution-specific of the body shapes that were determined by BMI. The statistical analysis of the current research was processed by using of SPSS 17.0 program. We have figure out statistical amounts such as the arithmetic average, average deviation rate and percentage number. Fro the verification of he significancy of each elements, we have used the paired t-test, ANOVA, Chi-square test at the level of p, height , weight , fat rates are , fat amount , abdominal fat rate , BMI , and systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure and we have let them take the medicine twice a day for 8 weeks. Dietary approaches to stop hypertension diet concordance and coronary heart disease risk in overweight and obese college women

BackgroundCoronary heart disease (CHD) kills 1 in 2 females in the US. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is shown to be a valid dietary intervention to decrease CHD risk.PurposeTo determine prevalence of CHD risk factors and their association with DASH score in overweight/obese college females.MethodsSixty‐four overweight/obese (BMI 29.7±3.6 kg/m2) college women (19.1±1.0 yrs) were studied. Measures collected included: 12hr fasted blood on 2 non‐consecutive days, dietary intake from 3 non‐consecutive recalls using the Nutrition Data System for Research, and % body fat (BF) using air displacement plethysmography. Enzymatic methods were used to determine low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) levels. DASH score was calculated using a 15‐point scale according to DASH recommendations. Correlations and multiple linear regression models were used to assess the relationship between DASH and CHD risk.ResultsMean DASH score (6.1±1.9) was significantly correlated with mean LDL‐C (92.0±27.0 mg/dL, r=−0.30) and % BF (36.8±6.1, r=−0.30). Higher DASH score was a significant predictor for decreased LDL‐C (t(64)=−2.4, p<0.05) and % BF (t(64)=−2.2, p<0.05). Neither remained significant when multiple regression was run.ConclusionImproving DASH concordance may decrease CHD risk. More research is needed to determine specific effects on CHD risk in overweight/obese college women.

Prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome Among Overweight and Obese College Students in Korea

This study examined the prevalence of metabolic risk factors among overweight and obese college students aged 18 to 29 years in Korea. Baseline data from a healthy lifestyle intervention study for overweight and obese college students in Korea were used. We recruited the sample (N = 73) (84% male; mean [SD] age, 23.77 [2.45] years) from 2 universities in Seoul, Korea, and measured body mass index, waist-hip circumstance, blood pressure, and fasting blood chemistry. Descriptive statistics, Spearman rank order correlations, and analysis of variance were conducted using SPSS 16.0 (SPSS Inc, Chicago, Illinois) for windows. Three-fourths of the participants were identified as being viscerally obese based on the Asia Pacific criteria. Of the total sample, about 12% and 20% were defined as having metabolic syndrome according to the National Cholesterol Education Program--the Adult Treatment Panel III and International Diabetes Federation, respectively. Concordance between the National Cholesterol Education Program--the Adult Treatment Panel III and International Diabetes Federation definitions was very good in the current study (Cohen kappa coefficient = 0.74, P <.001). Body mass index was significantly correlated with greater triglyceride and systolic and diastolic blood pressure and waist circumference but with lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Early screening and targeted interventions to prevent obesity and the metabolic syndrome are urgently needed to promote health for adolescents and young adults in South Korea.

Romantic interest in obese college students

This study compares romantic interest in obese and non-obese students. We surveyed 1217 college students on their demographic characteristics, self-perceptions (self-loathing and drive for thinness), and romantic selectivity. Obese people (especially women) showed strongly negative self-perceptions. Obese people and women were less likely to be selective about the physical traits of their potential partners than nonobese people and men. Obese women preferred overweight (but not obese) partners. Obese men preferred partners in the normal weight range. Results suggest that obesity is associated with predictable alterations in one's romantic attraction to others.

The Benefits of a Weight Loss Contest in Overweight and Obese College Students

PURPOSE: Campus-based health promotion programs, including healthy eating and physical activity, may be important in developing long-term healthy habits during and after college, and may reduce the incidence of overweight and obesity in young adults. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a weight loss contest would be an effective way to promote beneficial changes in body composition in overweight and obese college students. METHODS: Students were invited to participate in a semester-long weight loss contest at the campus Recreation Center. Monthly "weigh-ins" included weight, percent fat, and circumference measurements. Participants were also offered a variety of short seminars focusing on nutrition and exercise, as well as individualized and group exercise instruction. Participants were awarded points for reductions in weight, percent fat, and circumference measurements and for attendance at seminars and exercise sessions. The individuals with the top three point totals at the end of the contest were given gift certificates. After the contest was completed, the authors received approval from the University IRB to analyze the data that was collected by Recreation Center staff. Data are presented as the means+SEM. RESULTS: Thirty-nine participants (26 women, 13 men, 19-35 yr) registered for the contest. Forty-one percent (12 women and four men, 22+1 yr) attended four (n=six) or five (n=10) weigh-ins, while the remaining participants (14 women and nine men, 21+1 yr) attended three (n=seven), two (n=five), or one weigh-in (n=11) between February and May. Those who attended four or five weigh-ins significantly reduced body weight, percent fat, and waist circumference over the semester-long contest, and attended more seminars and exercise sessions than those who attended less than four weigh-ins. Percent change in weight was significantly associated with seminar (r=-0.39) and exercise sessions attended (r=−0.41). CONCLUSION: Campus-based weight loss contests can be an effective way to promote weight loss in some individuals, although additional studies are needed to determine what factors increase adherence and whether such programs promote longterm changes in physical activity and diet.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether a weight loss contest would result in changes in body composition in college students. Students were invited to participate in a semester-long weight loss contest. Monthly “weigh-ins” included body weight, body mass index (BMI), percent fat, and circumference measurements. Thirty-nine participants registered for the contest. Only 41% of the original participants attended at least four weigh-ins ( n = 16). Those participants who attended at least four weigh-ins attended more education and exercise sessions than the other participants and significantly reduced their weight, BMI, percent fat, waist, and waist-to-hip ratio over the semester-long contest. Percent change in weight was associated with education ( r = –.39) and exercise sessions attended ( r = –.41). In conclusion, campus-based weight loss contests can be successful in promoting weight loss, although additional studies are needed to determine what factors increase adherence and whether such programs promote long-term changes in physical activity and diet.

Negative emotion and disordered eating among obese college students

The present study examined the relationship between negative emotions, body dissatisfaction, exercise, and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors among obese college students. It also examined whether there were gender differences in these variables. A total of 88 males and 102 females, who reported a BMI score above 30, completed a survey. Females reported higher levels of disordered eating, body dissatisfaction, and more frequent dieting than males and as predicted, males reported higher levels of exercise behaviors. Body dissatisfaction, anger discomfort, and self dissatisfaction all correlated with drive for thinness for both genders. Anger discomfort was the only variable to predict disordered eating for both genders. The results support numerous studies that have found that females are at greater risk of disordered eating than males, and also suggest that anger management may be an important component in treatment of disordered eating among obese young adults.

1. The purpose of this study Recently, the number of obese people is the increasing trend around the world and Koreans follow the same trend due to changing eating habits along with lifestyle. No definitive research has been conducted on obesity among adult Koreans, but a study on the national nutrition intake in Korea showed that 20% of Koreans have a BMI greater than 25 (19.9% males, 16.3% females) (Song, 2000). Recently, the Korean Clinical Health Promotion Society (2000) set the standard for obesity at less than 25 which is needed for Koreans to reduce the incidence of Type II diabetes and cardiovascular related diseases and to reduce overall mortality rates from these diseases (Brownell, 1982) Obesity among women is a contributing factor in the development of abnormal menstruation, infertility, high risk delivery, cancer of the gall bladder, cancer of the endometrium, ovarian cancer, and breast cancer. Additionally, it inhibits promotion of women’s health in general. Young women put great emphasis on how they are seen by others and their achievements are strongly correlated with this perception. Shame and guilt feelings among university women stem from the failure to control one’s figure.
