A COLLECTION OF CULTIVARS OF OATS IMMUNE OR HIGHLY RESISTANT TO SMUT

A partial-vacuum method was developed for inoculating large numbers of oat cultivars with smut. It was used over a period of 5 yr to test 5,485 entries, of diverse origin in the U.S. Department of Agriculture World Oat Collection for their reaction to races of loose smut that, in combination, carried all known genes for virulence. There were 305 immune, and 142 highly resistant entries, some of which may contain genes for resistance that can be employed once the presently used genes are no longer effective.

TOLERANCE OF OATS TO THE SEPTORIA DISEASE

Forty-eight strains of oats (Avena spp.) from the United States Department of Agriculture World Oat Collection were assessed for septoria tolerance at Charlottetown and Ottawa and 10 of these were selected for further tests. Two years’ additional data showed that strains selected for good tolerance to the septoria disease and for high seed yield were consistent for these traits. However, their reactions to other diseases were variable. Strain C.I.8175 displayed the highest level of tolerance, the lowest disease ranking, and the highest seed yield.

Oil Content and Groat Weight of Entries in the World Oat Collection1

Wide‐line nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to determine the oil content from primary groats of more than 4,000 entries of the world oat (Avena sp.) collection. Weight per groat, based on the mean weight of the same primary groats used for oil determinations, was also determined.Oil content varied from 3.1 to 11.6%, with a mean oil content of 7.0%. Ninety percent of the entries ranged from 5 to 9%, but five entries contained more than 11%, while 25 contained less than 4% oil. Groat weight of entries ranged from less than 10 mg to 41.2 mg, with a mean weight for all entries of 26.2 mg. Most of the observations (85%) ranged from 20 to 32 mg per groat.A positive correlation coefficient of .ll between oil content and groat weight was obtained. While this was statistically significant, based on more than 4,000 d.f., it was considered too small to have practical importance in oat breeding.

Sources of Tolerance to Soil‐Borne Oat Mosaic Virus from the World Oat Collection1

The World Oat (Avena spp.) Collection (4,533 entries) was evaluated in replicated experiments in 1963‐64 for tolerance to soil‐borne oat mosaic virus, Marmor terrestre var. typicum and M. terrestre var. oculatum McK. In 1964‐65, 601 entries were repeated that scored less than 4 on a 0 to 10 rating (0 = no visual symptoms and 10 = completely susceptible or dead plants). Of these 601 entries, the 37 that scored less than or equal to 2.5 are listed.From this evaluation several excellent divergent sources of tolerance to soil‐borne oat mosaic virus were noted.
