Settling Into and Moving in a Climate of Care: Styles and Patterns of Interaction Between Nurse Psychotherapists and Clients

To study nonverbal manifestations of rapport between nurse psychotherapists and clients. A phenomenological investigation of eight pairs of nurse psychotherapists and clients was completed using video-cued narrative recall. Emotional congruence, physical mirroring of gestures, postures, expressions, and shared cadences were significant to the participants. Matching behaviors were responsive, not technique-driven, and occurred only at meaningful junctures. Matching behaviors showed up simultaneously and as turn-taking responses, and felt genuine because they incorporated imperfection and were expressed in varied ways. Settling into the climate of the client's world and matching her response helped the nurse therapist shape intervention possibilities, create a comfortable sense of timing, and establish rapport. Video-cued narrative recall was an effective research strategy.

Computer Addiction: Implications for Nursing Psychotherapy Practice

Nurse psychotherapists will encounter the impact of today's technology on the daily lives of people including computer addiction. Computer addiction may also present with comorbidities such as depression, gambling, substance abuse, and marital infidelity and divorce. This overview article presents what is currently documented in the literature regarding the incidence, symptomatology, and nursing psychotherapy interventions relevant to computer addiction and its treatment. Issues presented include computer addiction, virtual relationships, online marital infidelity, and compulsive online sexual behavior. Review of literature from Medline, Psychoinfo, CINAHL, and current texts. Given the increased use of computers in today's society, there is the potential for overuse of technology and neglect of others and self as a result of computer addiction. Computer disorders also present themselves as marital or couple discord with the potential for online extramarital affairs and compulsive sexual online behavior. A summary and an assessment tool are provided to guide the nurse psychotherapist in practice.

The Lived Experience of Choosing Bariatric Surgery to Lose Weight

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment for morbid obesity is becoming an increasingly sought out intervention for weight loss. Bariatric surgery is a life-changing procedure that requires a long-term commitment from the individual. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to explore issues relating to having a surgical procedure performed to lose weight. STUDY DESIGN: A phenomenological study was conducted. The sample included five females and three males who had undergone surgery to reduce weight at least 1 year prior to the study participation. RESULTS: Qualitative data analysis revealed the following four themes: last resort, surgery provides structure, reality setsin, and positive about the decision to have the surgery. CONCLUSION: Understanding these themes offers much needed information for health professionals when treating the morbidly obese person. Psychiatric nurses and psychiatric advanced practice nurses can offer a holistic approach and implement programs that incorporate study findings into individual treatment plans. Nurse psychotherapists can explore these findings in therapy sessions and focus on the impact they have on the person’s goals to maintain weight loss.

The burgeoning role of the analytically prepared nurse psychotherapist in Great Britain. To describe the struggles of nurses in this role and ways this struggle might be lessened. Observations of the author, an analytically prepared nurse psychotherapist-in-training in Great Britain. The role of the nurse psychotherapist with psychoanalytic training is in its infancy in Great Britain. Barriers to the development are both external, from outside the nursing profession, and internal, in the form of sibling rivalry or envy from less prepared nurses. Increased communication among nurses is encouraged so that a shared understanding and mutual respect may result.

Psychological evaluations, referrals, and follow-up of adolescents after their exposure to Hurricane Hugo.

There is little understanding of adolescent appraisal of stress and crisis intervention for adolescents who are exposed to major stress such as that of a natural disaster. A description of the psychological evaluations, referrals, and follow-up assessments made by nurse practitioners (NPs) and a nurse psychotherapist (NPT) of adolescents (N = 507) in two South Carolina high schools who experienced Hurricane Hugo. The NPs' evaluations concluded that 63 adolescents (12%) exhibited symptoms of psychological distress. The NPs referred 36 of these adolescents to high school counselors for minor distress or school-related problems and 27 for more intensive clinical evaluation by an NPT. Of the 27 adolescents who were referred to the NPT, 10 had symptoms associated with adolescent adjustment reaction, 8 showed symptoms of depression, 5 revealed symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, and 4 complained of serious family problems. Based on these data and the mental processes described by these adolescents, the authors propose a model and suggest adolescent appraisal of stress and crisis is a critical issue to consider when intervening with adolescents who are exposed to major stressors, including those associated with a disaster.

Considerations of power by graduate student nurse psychotherapists: a pilot study.

The purpose of this paper was to discuss the results of an exploratory pilot study of graduate student nurse psychotherapists' descriptions of power. A brief literature review was presented focusing on power in psychotherapy from the relationship, the therapist, and the client perspectives. Sample included 24 beginning nurse psychotherapists who had completed one year in two master's programs in psychiatric mental health nursing. Data obtained through a structured questionnaire was analyzed by content analysis. Results showed the nurses descriptions of definitions of power, sources of power, power methods, and effects of power.
