Conceptualising nursing theory and practice within a local cultural and professional context: a methodological example to inform theory development

Background: Nursing theories are crucial toward orienting the development of knowledge and practice. However, there is a persistent debate in the literature regarding the gap between theory and practice. Theories and conceptual models developed in Anglo-Saxon countries are often proposed within diverse educational and clinical contexts in other countries, generating challenges in their application in practice. Aim: This study aimed to develop and propose a methodology to promote the advancement of nursing theorising, considering local cultural and professional contexts. Methods: This analysis was conducted within Italy, which served as a local cultural and professional context exemplar for this investigation. A Scoping Review was used to map local nursing knowledge related to nursing practice. Fawcett’s metaparadigm was used as a general orienting frame for the literature analysis. Results: In light of the analysis conducted, the four disciplinary concepts related to the local (Italian) cultural and professional context were described (person, environment, health, nursing). Conclusion: This investigation aimed to present an example of how an inductive reflective approach can be used as a way to map nursing practice and define disciplinary concepts that can guide conceptual/theory development. The knowledge that was generated can orient initiatives to promote local nursing theory development.

Trajectories of Coping With Persistent Smell and Taste Dysfunction After a Covid-19 Infection-A Qualitative Interview Study.

To explore trajectories of understanding and managing persistent chemosensory dysfunction after COVID-19 in patients undergoing clinical treatment. A descriptive qualitative interview study with a realist approach. Data were collected in Sweden, from August 2022 to March 2023 through semi-structured interviews with 30 patients undergoing treatment for long-lasting smell and taste dysfunction resulting from COVID-19. Thematic analysis was applied in a process that involved continuous discussions and refinement of codes into themes and subthemes. Three main themes were identified: (1) Understanding the sensory alterations, which includes subthemes of Searching for validation and Seeking remedies; (2) Practical coping strategies, encompassing Adapted eating and Managing olfactory training and (3) Navigating the emotional landscape, featuring Self-persuasion and suppression and The ambivalence of acceptance. These themes highlight the cyclic and fluid nature of coping with the dysfunction, reflecting a dynamic process of adaptation. Despite treatment options like olfactory training, participants frequently experienced frustration due to limited perceived improvement and the psychological toll of managing their condition. The study highlights the complex and personal nature of coping with long-term smell and taste dysfunction post-COVID-19. Coping strategies varied widely and evolved over time, reflecting a dynamic process of adaptation. The emotional and psychological impact was profound, underscoring the need for comprehensive treatment approaches that include both physiological and psychological support. There is a need for more effective interventions and support mechanisms to improve the quality of life for those affected by these persistent symptoms. This study contributes to the understanding of COVID-19's long-term effects on smell and taste, highlighting the need for ongoing support from health care, further research into effective interventions, and a comprehensive approach to care for individuals affected by these conditions. This study addresses trajectories and challenges of coping with persistent chemosensory dysfunction. Findings emphasise the complexity of managing persistent chemosensory dysfunction and the critical role of personalised care. The study contributes to knowledge for nurses in understanding patients with chemosensory dysfunction. This research adheres to the EQUATOR guidelines: Standards for reporting qualitative research (SRQR). No patient or public contribution.

Study to Assess the Knowledge and Practice among Cardiac Nurses About Infusion Therapy using Syringe Pump

The use of electronic syringe infusion pumps to administer therapeutic agents is a common practice in hospitals, particularly among patients who require slow injection treatments. For these patients and their practitioners, it is crucial that the administration of drugs (especially for those having a small therapeutic index) via the syringe pump be consistent, predictable, and reliable. The present study was intended to assess the knowledge and practice among cardiac nurses about infusion therapy using syringe pump. The objectives were to assess the knowledge and practice among cardiac nurses about infusion therapy using syringe pump and to find out the association between knowledge and selected variables. The study was done by quantitative approach and research design used was descriptive design. Data was collected from 60 cardiac nurses from SCTIMST Thiruvananthapuram, working in CSICU, CHICU, CHW and CCU. Convenient sampling technique was used for selection of samples. The data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire to assess the cardiac nurses knowledge about infusion therapy using syringe pump and check list to assess the practice. The data was analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics. The present study emphasized to assess the knowledge and practice among cardiac nurses about infusion therapy using syringe pump. Majority (92%) cardiac nurses had good knowledge score (26) with a maximum obtainable score of 9. For practice all participant's (100%) had good practice. There was association between knowledge and selected socio-demographic variables such as age, gender, educational qualification and years of experience.

ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE REGARDING EVIDENCE BASED GUIDELINES ON VAP PREVENTION AMONG NURSES

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a serious healthcare-associated infection that increases morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs). In Pakistan, the high prevalence of VAP in ICUs underscores the importance of adherence to evidence-based preventive practices among nursing staff. However, knowledge gaps and inconsistencies in VAP preventive practices remain a challenge, largely due to limited training resources and high patient-to-nurse ratios. Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge of ICU nurses on evidence-based guidelines for VAP prevention at a tertiary care hospital in Lahore, Pakistan. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was utilized. Data were collected from 140 registered nurses working in the ICU of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore, using a structured questionnaire consisting of 17 questions related to VAP prevention guidelines. Convenience sampling was employed to recruit participants who met the inclusion criteria. Data analysis was performed using SPSS, with descriptive statistics applied to summarize findings and identify knowledge gaps. Results: The study revealed varied levels of knowledge among ICU nurses regarding VAP prevention. While the majority demonstrated awareness of core practices, such as semi-recumbent positioning and regular oral care, there were notable gaps in understanding related to the frequency of ventilator circuit changes and the optimal use of suction systems. Approximately 67.9% of nurses were aware of general VAP guidelines, but only 47.1% correctly identified all recommended practices. Additionally, knowledge disparities were observed based on educational background and years of ICU experience.Conclusion: This study highlights critical knowledge gaps among ICU nurses regarding evidence-based VAP prevention practices. The findings underscore the need for targeted educational interventions and standardized training programs to improve adherence to VAP guidelines. Strengthening nurse education on VAP prevention can contribute to reduced infection rates, enhanced patient safety, and better utilization of healthcare resources in Pakistan’s ICUs.

Knowledge of emergency nurses and related factors toward geriatric: a cross-sectional study

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the geriatric knowledge of emergency nurses and related factors. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on nursing students at Guilan University of Medical Sciences in Iran. The objective was to assess the geriatric knowledge of nurses working in the emergency departments of educational and therapeutic centers in Rasht City. The sample was selected through a census sampling method, including all nurses employed in these departments. Data collection was carried out using a three-part questionnaire, which included sections on ‘personal and occupational characteristics’ and the ‘Questionnaire of Awareness about the Facts of Aging (FAQ)’. Results: A total of 190 emergency department nurses participated in this study. The mean age of the participants was 34.41 years (SD=6.37). The mean score for geriatric knowledge among the nurses was 6.58 (SD=2.24). No statistically significant associations were found between geriatric knowledge and the personal or occupational variables of the nurses. Also, the results showed that changes in nurses’ geriatric knowledge are explained to a small extent through personal and occupational characteristics. Conclusion: Overall, these results highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve emergency nurses’ understanding of geriatric care. Furthermore, given the lack of significant correlations with demographic and occupational variables, future research should investigate additional factors that may influence emergency nurses’ knowledge in this area.

Bibliometric Mapping of Factors Influencing Compliance in Nursing Care Documentation

ABSTRACT Accurate and complete nursing documentation plays an important role in ensuring the quality of nursing care and patient safety. However, adherence to documentation standards among nurses often remains a challenge that affects the overall quality of medical records and clinical interventions. This study was conducted to map research trends and factors affecting compliance in nursing documentation through a bibliometric analysis approach. The main objective of this study was to identify the main topics, key factors, as well as emerging publication trends related to nursing documentation compliance over the past few years. This study used the Publish or Perish application to collect 50 scientific articles published between 2016 and 2024, with keywords such as "compliance", "completeness", and "nursing care documentation". The data obtained was then analyzed using VOSviewer to visualize the bibliometric network based on the keywords that appeared in the literature. Through Network Visualization, Overlay Visualization, and Density Visualization, this study identified the main keywords such as "completeness", "motivation", "knowledge", and "compliance" that were most frequently discussed in related studies. The results of the analysis showed that documentation completeness and its influencing factors, such as nurse motivation and knowledge, are the main focus in the documentation compliance literature. In addition, the publication trend shows a significant increase in 2020 and 2021, most likely related to the COVID-19 pandemic situation that drives increased attention to the quality of documentation in healthcare. The conclusion of this study shows that adherence in nursing documentation, specifically related to the completeness, motivation, and knowledge of nurses, is an important topic that continues to grow in research. Although technologies such as electronic medical records are also relevant, the focus of research seems to be more on behavioral factors that influence documentation quality. This study provides guidance for researchers to identify gaps in the literature that could be further explored, especially in the development of more effective and integrated documentation systems. Identification and Validation of an Instrument to Measure Physicians‘and Nurses' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Antibiotic Resistance and Antimicrobial Stewardship

Background: In Italy, the presence of a suitable instrument to measure the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of intensive care physicians and nurses with respect to antibiotic resistance and antimicrobial stewardship could not be identified Objectives: To validate the Italian version of the Ashiru-Oredope tool used by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in 2019 to investigate intensive care nurses' and physicians' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding antibiotic resistance. Methods: Content validity was assessed using the Item-Content Validity Index (I-CVI), Scale Level-Content Validity Index/Universal Agreement (S-CVI/UA) score, Scale Level-Content Validity Index/Average (S-CVI/Ave) score, and Average Content Validity Ratio (CVR). Multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) was then carried out together with cluster analysis (CA) to check the correspondence of the items with the eight subdivision domains of the scale. Results: The final version consisted of 55/60 deemed relevant items, with Item-Content Validity Index (I-CVI) scores ranging from 0,625 to 1. The Scale Level-Content Validity Index/Universal Agreement (S-CVI/UA) score was 0.43; the Scale Level-Content Validity Index/Average (S-CVI/Ave) 0.90. The mean CVR of the scale was 0.43. The inter-rater reliability (Cohen's K) was between good and excellent. The combination of MCA and CA confirmed the correspondence of the items with the domains. Conclusion: The Italian version is a reliable and valid instrument for investigating antibiotic resistance and antimicrobial stewardship among Italian intensive care nurses and physicians.

Korean nurses' knowledge, opinions and current practice of trauma-informed pediatric nursing care in South Korea: a descriptive study.

This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, opinions, competence, and barriers of nurses providing trauma-informed care (TIC) to children in hospitals. Data were collected from 198 nurses nationwide using the TIC Provider Survey developed by the Center for Pediatric Traumatic Stress in July, 2024. Descriptive statistics, t tests, and one-way ANOVA were conducted using the IBM SPSS Statistics software (ver. 23.0, IBM Corp.). Of the 13 items assessing knowledge of TIC, seven had a correct response rate of over 90%. However, the correct response rate for these three items were less than 30%. Regarding opinions on the TIC, more than 90% of participants agreed with five of the seven items. In self-rated competence in providing TIC, they were not competent in responding to a child's (or parent's) questions about whether the child is going to die or understanding how traumatic stress may present differently according to developmental stages. The major barriers to providing TIC were time constraints, lack of training, and organizational support. Items with relatively low performance rates were 'teach parents what to say to their child after a difficult/sick/scary experience, and teach child or parents the specific ways to cope with unpleasant experiences'. This study suggests that it can contribute to the development of specific guidelines for nurses to effectively apply TIC in pediatric and family nursing practice, emphasizing the need for educational programs to support this implementation.

Nurses’ knowledge, perceived practice, and associated factors towards sterile techniques in major operation rooms at public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2022: a cross-sectional study

IntroductionA sterile technique is a standard to reduce microorganism transmission during surgery. Gaps in knowledge and practice in sterile techniques by nurses are common causes of surgical site infections for surgical patients. Even though surgical site infection is a global problem due to lack of knowledge and practice, almost no study has been done in Ethiopia regarding nurses’ knowledge and practice of sterile techniques in the operating room. Therefore, this study aimed to assess nurses’ knowledge, practice, and associated factors of sterile techniques in Addis Ababa public hospitals, Ethiopia.MethodAn institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 423 nurses who were working in sixty-six operation rooms at seven public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from May 11 to June 26/2022. A simple random sampling method was employed to select study participants. A pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were entered by Epi-data version 4.6 and analyzed by SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics were presented by text, table, and figure. Multivariable analysis was used to identify the association between the dependent variable and independent variables. Variables with a P-value < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.ResultNearly three-fifths (58.1%; 95%CI: 53.2 to 63.7) of respondents had good knowledge, and 56.1% with 95%CI (51.5 to 61.1) had good practice with respect to sterile techniques in the operation room. Training [AOR = 1.989; 95%CI (1.120 to 3.530)], availability of guidelines [AOR = 6.4; 95%CI (3.773 to 10.856)], and supervision [AOR = 2.963; 95%CI (1.693 to 5.184)] were associated with nurses’ knowledge about sterile techniques in the operating room. Availability of guidelines [AOR = 1.890, 95%CI (1.123 to 3.182)], presence of supervision [AOR = 4.732; 95%CI (2.643 to 8.471)], and having good knowledge of sterile techniques [AOR = 5.419; 95%CI (3.087 to 9.512)] were associated with nurses’ practice of sterile techniques in the operation room.ConclusionOperative theater nurses’ knowledge and practice of sterile techniques were found inadequate. Training, supervision, availability of guidelines, and knowledge of nurses towards sterile techniques are factors associated with sterile techniques in the operating room. So, it is better to strengthen training, equip wards with standardized guidelines, and provide supervision, which is crucial to enhancing their knowledge and practice.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions of Quebec Nurses Relating to Climate Change in the Context of Their Practice with Children Aged 0 to 5 Years: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study.

Reducing children's vulnerability to climate change (CC) depends firstly on parents having the ability to adapt. The purpose of this study was to describe knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of nurses in support of parents' ability to adapt to CC to protect the physical and psychosocial health of 0-5 year olds. A cross-sectional descriptive study was used. A total of 127 pediatric nurses from the province of Quebec completed an online questionnaire documenting nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about CC. A third of nurses have little or no knowledge of the health risks of CC for children, even though they consider it to be a major issue for children. Nurses perceive that parents don't generally consider their children to be among the most vulnerable to CC, trivialize their effects on their children's health, have little knowledge of the effects of CC mainly on their children's psychosocial health, know little about the means to use to protect them, and more readily seek help from family and friends to ensure their children's protection. Nurses affirm that they are responsible for discussing the health effects of CC with parents, introduce measures to reduce their effects, possess little knowledge and few skills for reducing their effects, and feel unprepared to deal with their effects in their practice. Greater access to training on CC-related concepts is needed to increase nurses' knowledge. Nurses' perceptions must be validated with parents to promote optimal protection of children from CC.

Knowledge, opinions and experiences of nurses and nursing students in Portugal regarding the use of medical Cannabis

BackgroundThe opening up of the laws to medicinal cannabis in recent years is a key factor in the growth of this therapy, but there is little information about what nurses know and think about it. The present paper seeks to analyze the knowledge, opinions, and experiences of nurses and nursing students in Portugal regarding the use of cannabis and to understand gender differences.MethodsA self-completion questionnaire was drawn up and published online. It received face and content validity and was approved by the Ethics Committee. The instrument includes socio-demographic data, questions about knowledge, opinions, experiences, and training in cannabis. The data was collected and processed by applying descriptive and inferential statistics using the chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test on the SPSS platform.ResultsThe majority of the 610 participants were women. The therapeutic benefits of medical cannabis were appreciated by 79,6% of nurses and 84,3% of students. When asked about the functions of the endocannabinoid system, 71,7% of nurses and 79,5% of students had never heard of it. There is a statistically significant gender difference concerning personal experience of cannabis use to treat symptoms or illnesses.ConclusionsAs the levels of knowledge were low and a minority had education on medical cannabis, there is a need for further education of nurses and for this emerging area to be included in the curricula.

ASSESSMENT OF NURSES' KNOWLEDGE REGARDING PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AT TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL LAHORE

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is crucial for protecting healthcare workers from occupational hazards and infections, particularly in high-risk environments such as hospitals. Adequate knowledge and proper use of PPE are essential to ensure the safety of both healthcare workers and patients. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses regarding PPE at a tertiary care hospital in Lahore, Pakistan. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was utilized. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 152 nurses working in various departments of the hospital. Purposive sampling was employed, and the sample size was determined using RaoSoft with a 95% confidence interval and a 0.5% margin of error. The questionnaire comprised sections on demographic information, knowledge assessment, and attitudes and practices evaluation. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0, with descriptive statistics and chi-square tests to identify associations between demographic characteristics and knowledge levels. Results: Of the 152 participants, 77% were female, with a mean age of 36.5 years (SD ± 9.05 years). Most participants held a diploma in nursing (46%), and the majority (93.4%) had less than 12 years of professional experience. The findings revealed that 67% of nurses demonstrated good knowledge of PPE, 20% had average knowledge, and 13% exhibited poor knowledge. While 92% of participants reported being knowledgeable about PPE usage, inconsistencies were noted in the adherence to specific practices, such as glove and mask usage. Additionally, only 34% of participants believed that consistent use of PPE would reduce their risk of infection, indicating a potential gap between perceived and actual knowledge. Conclusion: The study highlights both strengths and gaps in nurses' knowledge and practices regarding PPE at a tertiary care hospital in Lahore. While most nurses demonstrated a satisfactory understanding of PPE, inconsistencies in practical application underscore the need for targeted training and reinforcement of guidelines. Regular training sessions, active monitoring, and continuous professional development are essential to enhance adherence to PPE protocols and safeguard healthcare workers in resource-limited settings like Pakistan.

Ready to act? Factors associated with nurses’ desire to work in Primary Health Care in Italy

Abstract Background The rapid increase in demand for primary healthcare (PHC) services after the pandemic requires reconsidering nursing staff planning and availability. The objectives of the study were to i) identify knowledge, attitudes, practices and work expectations of future nurses in primary care; ii) estimate the prevalence of nursing students who desire to be employed in PHC and Family and Community Health Nursing (FCHN) services after graduation. Methods A cross-sectional study is being conducted on a sample of nursing students enrolled in universities in the Lazio Region. A structured instrument was built based on the literature and national regulations and validated (Cronbach’s alpha=0.81). Results In this first phase, 163 nursing students were enrolled. The majority of the sample was female (N = 125, 76.7%), with a mean age of 22 (SD ± 5) years and were enrolled in the last year of degree program (N = 85, 52.1%). A total of 49 students (30%) reported adequate knowledge of PHC service reorganization policies and nursing practice in this setting. While 74% (N = 122) of the sample intended to undertake a PHC curricular internship during their degree program, only seven students (4%) participated in one. 52 individuals (30%) expressed their intention to be employed in PHCs after graduation, and 29 (17.8%) indicated their desire to work as FCHN practitioners. The main factors contributing to the undesirability of employment in PHC reported by students were: i) preferring the hospital settings (N = 53, 48%); ii) not having adequate skills to be employed in the PHC (N = 21, 19%); and iii) believing that the PHC does not offer attractive services for nursing practice (N = 14, 13%). Conclusions A multivariable analysis will be conducted to identify predictors of nursing students’ desire to work in PHCs after graduation. Preliminary results of the study showed that only one-third of nursing students indicated a desire to work in PHCs. Key messages • Only one-third of nursing students express a desire to work in PHC and in Family and Community Health Nursing (FCHN) services post-graduation. • Collaboration between the PHC workforce, academics, stakeholders, and policymakers is needed to create tailored initiatives that increase the attractiveness of PHC.

Knowledge and perspectives about medicinal cannabis in nurses and nursing students in Portugal

Abstract Background The opening up of legislation on medicinal cannabis in recent years has been a determining factor in the growth of this therapy. In Europe, regulation of medicinal use is a reality in several countries. Nurses can play a leading role in its administration, helping to ensure that it is carried out more effectively and assuming a fundamental role in the success of the therapy. It is therefore pertinent to analyze the knowledge of nurses and nursing students in Portugal about medicinal cannabis. Methods Quantitative descriptive study. A self-completion questionnaire was drawn up and made available on the google forms platform. It was face-validated, content-validated and approved by the Ethics Committee. The instrument included sociodemographic data, questions about cannabis knowledge and perspectives. Descriptive statistics were analyzed. Results Out of a total of 610 responses, 318 were nurses and 292 nursing students. Medical cannabis is considered legitimate by 79.6% of nurses and 84.3% of students. When asked about the functions of the endocannabinoid system, 71.7% of nurses and 79.5% of students said they had no knowledge. 88.7% of nurses and 79.5% of students disagreed that they had sufficient knowledge to advise users on the use of medicinal cannabis. Also, 38.4% believe that their patients use cannabis illegally to manage the symptoms of illnesses. Conclusions There is a need for continuing training for nurses and for the undergraduate and postgraduate nursing curricula to include this emerging area. Key messages • The results show that this issue is a public health problem. It reinforces the need to formulate public policies in this area and to implement training for nurses and nursing students. • These measures will be fundamental in preventing the use of illegal cannabis and promoting the safe use of medicinal cannabis.

The Effect of Perceptions of Evidence-Based Practice on Endotracheal Cuff Pressure Management in Critical Care Nurses: A Correlational Cross-Sectional Multicentre Study.

This correlational cross-sectional multicentre study aims to achieve two objectives. Firstly, to assess nurses' knowledge and practice of endotracheal cuff pressure management. Secondly, to examine the relationship between endotracheal cuff pressure management knowledge and evidence-based practice leadership and work environment. A correlational cross-sectional multicentre study design. This study was conducted among 144 intensive care nurses in Turkey. Data collection included descriptive characteristics and cuff pressure management of nurses, the Evidence-Based Practice Leadership Scale and Evidence-Based Practice Work Environment Scale. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, Pearson correlation and receiver operating characteristics analysis were conducted. A STROBE checklist was the reporting guide for this study. The success status of nurses in terms of knowledge related to cuff pressure was found significantly different according to the type of intensive care unit working in and the status of receiving training on evidence-based practice. A positive, strong relationship was found between nurses' mean scores on the Evidence-Based Practice Leadership Scale and the Work Environment Scale. There was a very weak positive correlation between the mean scores of the Evidence-Based Practice Leadership Scale and the cuff pressure management. Adherence by nurses to current evidence-based practice for cuff pressure monitoring is essential for safe patient care and improved quality of care. It is recommended to provide both a supportive working environment and training programmes for intensive care nurses to perform cuff pressure management in line with evidence-based practice. Providing educational programs, an appropriate clinical environment, support from health managers and access to appropriate tools are important considerations in increasing the knowledge and skills of intensive care nurses to effectively monitor and manage cuff pressure. Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Nurses and Midwives towards Hepatitis B Infection and Control Measures in Alban Gaded Hospital, Khartoum, Sudan

Purpose: Infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes severe morbidity and death, burdening world health. Nurses and midwives, among other healthcare professionals, are more likely to contract the illness. Few studies have looked at the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of healthcare professionals in Sudan with regard to HBV infection, despite the fact that diverse components of KAP have an impact on health-related behaviors. This study's objective was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) level of nurses and midwives concerning HBV viral infection in, Khartoum, Sudan.  Methods: In the Sudanese state of Khartoum, a public hospital (Alban Gaded Hospital) underwent a cross-sectional descriptive hospital-based study. To assess KAP's understanding of nurses and midwives about HBV infection. Self-administered questionnaires were used and approved by the supervisor for distribution to the population chosen for the study. The data was handed over to the Medical Director whom personally ensured the questionnaires were signed and filled by the Healthcare workers (HCWs) of the chosen criteria at the field. A member of group (23:B) took care of the supervision aside with the medical director, and made sure the data was collected as needed. The data at hand were subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS version 24.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences).  Results: 95 samples out of 99 were collected. According to participants’ knowledge: 67.95% have good knowledge about HBV, while 32.05% lack basic knowledge about it. The participants’ attitude towards HBV is above average showing 60.3% safe attitude. Lastly, the study shows excellent practice of the participants’ behavior towards HBV safety measures with a score of 92.3% safe practice. From the hospital, a total of 95 out of 99 nurses and midwives took part in the study. Two thirds of the respondents practiced safety, and the majority of respondents had a positive attitude about HBV preventative measures. More than half of the respondents (58.2%) had an average level of understanding. A minor but serious score of (12.6%) was noticed of the individuals, dealing with patients without wearing gloves. More over half of the nurses and midwives were not vaccinated against HBV; more than 50% of participants had incorrect ideas regarding the symptoms and route of HBV infection and all 95 participants voted (NO) for ever being infected by HBV.  Conclusion: In Alban Gaded hospital, the majority of the nurses and midwives were aware of HBV infection. But a sizeable majority of the participants lacked the necessary understanding of early immunization after birth. The study found a probability of high risk infection due to exposure under the poor level of HBV vaccine coverage rate. Moreover a clear point of limitation was noticed in Table 4 third question, where it asks whether you are or ever was infected by HBV. All the participants denied, showing a sense of partiality. Further occupational exposure prevention measures, training programs on HBV infection, including post-exposure prophylaxis, and increasing the vaccination rate of all HCWS are also strongly encouraged.

Prevention and management of medical adhesive-related skin injuries in tumor patients with peripheral central venous catheters: a best practice implementation project.

Peripheral central venous catheters are common vascular access devices used in patients with tumors. To prevent catheter shedding and displacement, it is essential to use medical adhesives to secure the catheters. Repeated adhesion and removal of medical adhesives can weaken the barrier function of the skin, leading to medical adhesive-related skin injuries (MARSI), which can increase the patients' pain and medical expenses. The objective of this project was to utilize the best evidence to prevent and manage MARSI in tumor patients with peripheral central venous catheters. This evidence-based audit and feedback project was theoretically informed by the JBI Evidence Implementation Framework. The framework involves seven phases in which a project team was established; measurable criteria were selected; baseline data were collected; improvement strategies were implemented to address gaps in compliance; a follow-up audit was conducted to assess improvements in compliance; and sustainability measures were considered. The project also used the JBI Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System (PACES) for project management, including data collection and analysis. The JBI Getting Research into Practice (GRiP) approach was also used to support implementation and compliance. In the baseline audit, the compliance rate for the nine audit criteria was low. In the follow-up audit, the compliance rate significantly improved, with each audit criterion exceeding a minimum of 80%, and four audit criteria reaching 100%. Knowledge of MARSI among nurses and patients significantly improved (p < 0.05) and the incidence of MARSI among patients with peripheral central venous catheters decreased. The effect of end-of-life care awareness education on the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of intensive care nurses: A randomized controlled trial.

Education in end-of-life care (EoLC) is essential for improving the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of intensive care nurses. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of online awareness education, based on the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium, on the knowledge levels, attitudes and behaviours of intensive care nurses. This single-centre randomized controlled study. This study was performed in a tertiary intensive care unit in a university-affiliated hospital. Seventy-six intensive care nurses were selected and equally randomized. In the education, the group was given an EoLC awareness education programme on an online platform as 40-60-min sessions once a week for 4 weeks. The descriptive Information Form, EoLC Knowledge Test and the Nurses' Attitudes and Behaviours towards the EoLC Scale were used. In the study, intensive care nurses' knowledge, attitude and behaviour levels towards EoLC were evaluated before and after 4 weeks (±3 days) following the education. When the mean post-education scores of the nurses in the education group were compared with the control group, it was found that their mean scores on the EoLC Knowledge Test (p = .001, Cohen's d = 1.354, 95% CI = 3.240-6.549), the attitude sub-dimension (p = .001, Cohen's d = 1.520, 95% CI = 4.510-7.858), the behaviour sub-dimension (p = .001, Cohen's d = 1.425, 95% CI = 3.206-6.214) and the total attitude and behaviour (p = .001, Cohen's d = 1.927, 95% CI = 8.408-13.643) were statistically significantly higher than those of the control group. This study showed that EoLC awareness education positively affected nurses' knowledge, attitudes and behaviours. Accordingly, planning EoLC awareness education online at regular intervals may be recommended for intensive care nurses. Intensive care nurses may be given online EoLC awareness education to positively affect their knowledge, attitudes and behaviours about EoLC. Online EoLC education can be effective in terms of reaching a large number of nurses, time and cost.

Psychometric testing of the continence and mobility in older adults knowledge quiz

AbstractWhat are the psychometric properties of the Continence and Mobility in Older Adults Knowledge Quiz? Our previous research revealed gaps in practicing and student nurses' knowledge of mobility and continence in older people. To address this gap, we developed a self‐directed e‐learning module on continence and mobility to enhance student nurses knowledge. The module provided education about continence, mobility, and the links between them. Since we were unable to locate a continence and mobility measure that captured both lower urinary track symptoms and elements of mobility, we developed a continence and mobility knowledge quiz. For researchers and educators to be able to use this quiz with confidence, psychometric testing of our continence and mobility knowledge quiz was required. When caring for older people, two geriatric challenges—continence and mobility—are often linked and viewed as indicators of frailty. Functional changes related to continence and/or mobility can indicate an acute illness in older persons and, if left untreated, can result in permanent changes managing continence needs. Continence care is often viewed negatively and is not prioritized by nurses. We employed stages in development of the Continence and Mobility Knowledge Quiz. In stage one, we developed 18 item true/false items from the literature with the guidance of a continence expert. In stage two, we tested the Quiz with nursing students from three universities in Canada. In stage three, (the current stage) we assessed the validity of the scale using a factor analysis and a reliability analysis (via standardized Cronbach's alpha). From our sample of 420, factor analysis indicated a two‐factor model (as suggested by Kaiser's rule), explained 22% of the variation in responses to the assessment items. We recommend removing item 7 as it does not contribute to the internal consistency of the tool. Cronbach's alpha after removing 7 is 0.65, indicating satisfactory reliability. To our knowledge, this is the first validated tool for measuring nurse knowledge about continence and mobility that addresses both a range of lower urinary tract symptoms and elements of mobility in older adults.

Palliative care knowledge and self-efficacy: a comparative study between intensive care units and general units nurses

Background and objectivesThe growing number of terminally ill patients has underscored the importance of equipping healthcare workers with adequate palliative care knowledge and self-efficacy. This study aimed to compare the palliative care knowledge and self-efficacy of nurses in intensive care units (ICUs) with those in general wards at hospitals affiliated with Kerman University of Medical Sciences in 2023.MethodsThis descriptive-comparative cross-sectional study involved nurses from intensive care units and general wards of three hospitals affiliated with Kerman University of Medical Sciences, for a total sample size of 300 nurses (150 in each group). The samples were selected using convenience sampling. The data collection tools included a demographic information questionnaire, the Palliative Care Knowledge Test (PCKT), and the Palliative Care Self-Efficacy Scale (PCSES). Convenience Sampling method was used. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and multivariate stepwise regression) were employed. Statistical significance was determined by a p-value of ≤ 0.05.FindingsThe mean score for palliative care knowledge was 10.59 (± 2.10) for nurses in intensive care units and 10.43 (± 2.33) for nurses in general wards, with no significant difference between the two groups (P = 0.53). Similarly, the mean score for palliative care self-efficacy was 28.01 (± 10.29) for nurses in intensive care units and 27.98 (± 10.33) for nurses in general wards, with no significant difference between the groups (P = 0.98). Variables such as the history of caring for dying patients in the hospital (P = 0.004) or at home (P = 0.01), workplace (P = 0.002), and work experience (P = 0.03) were identified as the main predictors of palliative care knowledge and palliative care self-efficacy was affected by age (P < 0.001), history of participation in palliative care training courses (P = 0.008), and palliative care knowledge score (P = 0.01).Discussion and conclusionThis study revealed no significant difference in total scores of palliative care knowledge or self-efficacy between nurses in intensive care units and general wards It is suggested that more efforts be made to increase the knowledge and self-efficacy of all nurses, especially nurses in ICU departments, till providing a standard palliative care setting.
