As learner-oriented education in foreign language comes up as an issue, designing courses optimized for learners is also gathering attention. This study is intended to provide basic resources to develop future college Chinese programs by conducting actual survey on students who take college Chinese courses.
First, for the survey, questionnaires were independently made based on the results of precedent studies and education experiences. The questionnaires are broadly composed of learning goals of Chinese, desired subjects and the proper number of attendees. The survey was conducted twice, and the collected 439 responses were analyzed according to majors, genders and periods of learning.
The results of the analysis show that students tend to focus on improving speaking ability, which is practical. They also prioritize Chinese skill learning such as speaking, listening and reading rather than Chinese Characters, vocabularies and grammar. In addition, due to high demand of HSK subjects, there is a need for discussion on the operation of Chinese programs in the general education curriculum. Lastly, the study shows the possibility of opening Chinese programs designed for the characteristics of each major, so there is a need for future efforts for constant research and collaboration among majors.
