The recent more accurate experimental results on the scattering of protons by protons by Herb, Par kinson, K ers t and Plainl) andby Heydenburg, Hafstad and Tuve2) in the energy range 800-2400 keV have necessitated a modification of former values 3) “) of the range and depth of the nuclear interaction potential “). The Gauss-error potential (AF’*) is found 5) to afford good agreement with the recent experimental data with A = 51.4andarangeK, = 1.9 x lo-i3cm (a = 21.6). This shorter range is also predicated in the work of R a r i t a and P r e s e n‘t 6). In consequence of this modification of the observational values E d d i n g t o n’s theoretical calculation “) of A and k,, based on a combination of relativity and quantum theory, no longer agrees with experiment. A correction of some kind is needed, and the purpose of this note is to suggest the probable nature of the correction.
