Bisimulation between base argumentation and premise-conclusion argumentation

The structured argumentation system that represents arguments by premise-conclusion pairs is called premise-conclusion argumentation (PA) and the one that represents arguments by their premises is called base argumentation (BA). To assess whether BA and PA have the same ability in argument evaluation by extensional semantics, this paper defines the notion of extensional equivalence between BA and PA. It also defines the notion of bisimulation between BA and PA and shows that bisimulation implies extensional equivalence. To illustrate how base argumentation, bisimulation and extensional equivalence can contribute to the study of PA, we prove some new results about PA by investigating the extensional properties of a base argumentation framework and exporting them to two premise-conclusion argumentation frameworks via bisimulation and extensional equivalence. We show that there are essentially three kinds of extensions in these frameworks and that the extensions in the two premise-conclusion argumentation frameworks are identical.

Uncertainty-based knowing how logic

Abstract We introduce a novel semantics for a multi-agent epistemic operator of knowing how, based on an indistinguishability relation between plans. Our proposal is, arguably, closer to the standard presentation of knowing that modalities in classical epistemic logic. We study the relationship between this new semantics and previous approaches, showing that our setting is general enough to capture them. We also study the logical properties of the new semantics. First, we define a sound and complete axiomatization. Second, we define a suitable notion of bisimulation and prove correspondence theorems. Finally, we investigate the computational complexity of the model checking and satisfiability problems for the new logic.

Bisimulation in model-changing modal logics: An algorithmic study

Abstract We discuss the notion of bisimulation in various model-changing modal logics and provide an algorithmic study of the same. We provide a general algorithm which gives an overall procedure to check whether two models are bisimilar in all these logics. Through our algorithmic analyses we provide a PSPACE upper bound of the bisimulation/model comparison problem of all these modal logics. We also provide some insight into the higher complexity of the model comparison problem for these logics compared to that for the basic modal logic.

Bisimulations for delayed switched Boolean control networks and its application in controllability

AbstractThis paper investigates bisimulation relations of delayed switched Boolean control networks (DSBCNs), using the semi‐tensor product (STP) approach. Firstly, the notion of bisimulation in DSBCNs is formalized. Subsequently, based on the skeleton matrix of DSBCN, two necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for checking this notion. Moreover, as an application of bisimulation relations, this paper explores the propagation of controllability for DSBCNs through a bisimulation relation. It shows the possibility that the controllability of a DSBCN can be inferred by studying a potentially simpler DSBCN. At last, two examples are proposed to illustrate the efficiency of the obtained results.

Bisimulations and bisimulation games between Verbrugge models

AbstractInterpretability logic is a modal formalization of relative interpretability between first‐order arithmetical theories. Verbrugge semantics is a generalization of Veltman semantics, the basic semantics for interpretability logic. Bisimulation is the basic equivalence between models for modal logic. We study various notions of bisimulation between Verbrugge models and develop a new one, which we call w‐bisimulation. We show that the new notion, while keeping the basic property that bisimilarity implies modal equivalence, is weak enough to allow the converse to hold in the finitary case. To do this, we develop and use an appropriate notion of bisimulation games between Verbrugge models.

Bisimulation of strongly autonomous discrete nD systems

The notion of bisimulation is an important tool for analysis and synthesis of complex dynamical systems. While the notion of bisimulation for systems described by ordinary differential and difference equations is well studied in the literature, a notion of bisimulation for systems of partial differential and difference equations is practically absent. In this paper, we consider the problem of formulating a notion of bisimulation for a class of dynamical systems described by linear partial difference equations with real constant coefficients. We define two notions of bisimulation, namely, S-bisimulation and Π-induced bisimulation, and provide algebraic characterizations for the same.

The Temporal Logic of Coalitional Goal Assignments in Concurrent Multiplayer Games

We introduce and study a natural extension of the Alternating time temporal logic ATL , called Temporal Logic of Coalitional Goal Assignments (TLCGA). It features one new and quite expressive coalitional strategic operator, called the coalitional goal assignment operator ⦉ γ ⦊, where γ is a mapping assigning to each set of players in the game its coalitional goal , formalised by a path formula of the language of TLCGA, i.e., a formula prefixed with a temporal operator X , U , or G , representing a temporalised objective for the respective coalition, describing the property of the plays on which that objective is satisfied. Then, the formula ⦉ γ ⦊ intuitively says that there is a strategy profile Σ for the grand coalition Agt such that for each coalition C , the restriction Σ | C of Σ to C is a collective strategy of C that enforces the satisfaction of its objective γ (C) in all outcome plays enabled by Σ | C . We establish fixpoint characterizations of the temporal goal assignments in a μ-calculus extension of TLCGA, discuss its expressiveness and illustrate it with some examples, prove bisimulation invariance and Hennessy–Milner property for it with respect to a suitably defined notion of bisimulation, construct a sound and complete axiomatic system for TLCGA, and obtain its decidability via finite model property.

Probabilistic mediator: A coalgebraic perspective

Mediator is a component-based modeling language where components and systems can be specified separately and precisely. In this paper, we show how to analyze probabilistic Mediator, which supports both non-deterministic and probabilistic behavior of component-based systems, from a coalgebraic perspective. Probabilistic Mediator components are modeled as coalgebras, with the powerset monad P and the distribution monad D to capture their non-determinsitic and probabilistic behavior, respectively. A coalgebraic semantics of combinators on Mediator components is developed. Such a coalgebraic view induces a suitable notion of bisimulation for comparing probabilistic Mediator components and systems.

Morphisms and Minimisation of Weighted Automata

This paper studies the algorithms for the minimisation of weighted automata. It starts with the definition of morphisms — which generalises and unifies the notion of bisimulation to the whole class of weighted automata — and the unicity of a minimal quotient for every automaton, obtained by partition refinement. From a general scheme for the refinement of partitions, two strategies are considered for the computation of the minimal quotient: the Domain Split and the Predecesor Class Split algorithms. They correspond respectivly to the classical Moore and Hopcroft algorithms for the computation of the minimal quotient of deterministic Boolean automata. We show that these two strategies yield algorithms with the same quadratic complexity and we study the cases when the second one can be improved in order to achieve a complexity similar to the one of Hopcroft algorithm.

Arbitrary Public Announcement Logic with Memory

We introduce Arbitrary Public Announcement Logic with Memory (APALM), obtained by adding to the models a ‘memory’ of the initial states, representing the information before any communication took place (“the prior”), and adding to the syntax operators that can access this memory. We show that APALM is recursively axiomatizable (in contrast to the original Arbitrary Public Announcement Logic, for which the corresponding question is still open). We present a complete recursive axiomatization, that includes a natural finitary rule, and study this logic’s expressivity and the appropriate notion of bisimulation. We then examine Group Announcement Logic with Memory (GALM), the extension of APALM obtained by adding to its syntax group announcement operators, and provide a complete finitary axiomatization (again in contrast to the original Group Announcement Logic, for which the only known axiomatization is infinitary). We also show that, in the memory-enhanced context, there is a natural reduction of the so-called coalition announcement modality to group announcements (in contrast to the memory-free case, where this natural translation was shown to be invalid).

Game equivalence and expressive power of game description languages: a bisimulation approach

Abstract Bisimulations are a key notion to study the expressive power of a modal language. This paper studies the expressivity of Game Description Language (GDL) and its epistemic extension Epistemic GDL (EGDL) through a bisimulation approach. We first define a notion of bisimulation for GDL and prove that it coincides with the indistinguishability of GDL formulas. Based on it, we establish a characterization of the definability of GDL in terms of $k$-bisimulations. Then we design novel notions of bisimulation for EGDL and obtain characterizations of the expressive power of EGDL in terms of them. These characterizations provide a powerful tool to identify the expressive power of game description languages. Finally, we demonstrate with real games that bisimulation can be generalized to capture a wide range of game equivalence.

A Logic for Conditional Local Strategic Reasoning

We consider systems of rational agents who act and interact in pursuit of their individual and collective objectives. We study and formalise the reasoning of an agent, or of an external observer, about the expected choices of action of the other agents based on their objectives, in order to assess the reasoner’s ability, or expectation, to achieve their own objective. To formalize such reasoning we extend Pauly’s Coalition Logic with three new modal operators of conditional strategic reasoning, thus introducing the Logic for Local Conditional Strategic Reasoning mathsf {ConStR}. We provide formal semantics for the new conditional strategic operators in concurrent game models, introduce the matching notion of bisimulation for each of them, prove bisimulation invariance and Hennessy–Milner property for each of them, and discuss and compare briefly their expressiveness. Finally, we also propose systems of axioms for each of the basic operators of mathsf {ConStR} and for the full logic.

A van Benthem Theorem for Atomic and Molecular Logics

After recalling the definitions of atomic and molecular logics, we show how notions of bisimulation can be automatically defined from the truth conditions of the connectives of any of these logics. Then, we prove a generalization of van Benthem modal characterization theorem for molecular logics. Our molecular connectives should be uniform and contain all conjunctions and disjunctions. We use modal logic, the Lambek calculus and modal intuitionistic logic as case study and compare in particular our work with Olkhovikov's work.

Generalized fuzzy variable precision rough sets based on bisimulations and the corresponding decision-making.

Recently, the classical rough set has been extended in many ways. However, some of them are based on binary relations which only excavate “one step” information to distinguish objects. The “one step” in the binary relation means that the ordered pair of the starting and end points of the step belongs to the relation. Faced with some complex data sets, the “one step” information may be not feasible. Motivated by the notion of bisimulation in computer science, three types of bisimulation-based generalized fuzzy variable precision rough set (BGFVPRS) models are constructed. Different from many existed rough set models which are based on binary relations, the BGFVPRS models can distinguish objects by excavating the “multi-step” information of underlying relations. The related properties and relationships of BGFVPRS models are investigated. The uncertainty measure of BGFVPRS models and the reduction of fuzzy bisimulations are also discussed. Furthermore, learning from the PROMETHEE II method and combining it with our presented BGFVPRS models, a novel multiple-attribute decision-making method is provided. This method can effectively deal with complex problems including attribute data and relational data. The flexibility and effectiveness of our decision-making method are illustrated by comparative analysis and sensitivity analysis in the Zachary karate club network.

Graded epistemic logic with public announcement

This work introduces a new fuzzy epistemic logic with public announcement with fuzzyness on both transitions and propositions. The interpretation of the connectives is done over the Gödel algebra and the interpretation of public announcements in this logic generalises the traditional update one. The core idea is that, the effect of a public announcement is reflected on the transitions degrees of the models. The update takes in account not only the truth degree of the announcement, at a target state, but also the degree of the transitions reaching that state. We prove the soundness of all axioms of the multi-agent epistemic logic with public announcements with respect to this graded semantics. Finally, we introduce the notion of bisimulation and prove the modal invariance property for our logic.

Logics of dependence and independence: The local variants

Abstract Modern logics of dependence and independence are based on team semantics, which means that formulae are evaluated not on a single assignment of values to variables, but on a set of such assignments, called a team. This leads to high expressive power, on the level of existential second-order logic. As an alternative, Baltag and van Benthem have proposed a local variant of dependence logic, called logic of functional dependence ($ {\textsf {LFD}}$). While its semantics is also based on a team, the formulae are evaluated locally on just one of its assignments, and the team just serves as the supply of the possible assignments that are taken into account in the evaluation process. This logic thus relies on the modal perspective of generalized assignments semantics and can be seen as a fragment of first-order logic. For the variant of $ {\textsf {LFD}}$ without equality, the satisfiability problem is decidable. We extend the idea of localizing logics of dependence and independence in a systematic way, taking into account local variants of standard atomic dependency properties: besides dependence and independence, also inclusion, exclusion and anonymity. We study model-theoretic and algorithmic questions of the localized logics and also resolve some of the questions that had been left open by Baltag and van Benthem. In particular, we study decidability issues of the local logics and prove that satisfiability of $ {\textsf {LFD}}$ with equality is undecidable. Further, we establish characterization theorems via appropriate notions of bisimulation and study the complexity of model checking problems for these logics.

Revisiting Epistemic Logic with Names

This paper revisits the multi-agent epistemic logic presented in [10], where agents and sets of agents are replaced by abstract, intensional "names". We make three contributions. First, we study its model theory, providing adequate notions of bisimulation and frame morphisms, and use them to study the logic's expressive power and definability. Second, we show that the logic has a natural neighborhood semantics, which in turn allows to show that the axiomatization in [10] does not rely on possibly controversial introspective properties of knowledge. Finally, we extend the logic with common and distributed knowledge operators, and provide a sound and complete axiomatization for each of these extensions. These results together put the original epistemic logic with names in a more modern context and opens the door for a logical analysis of epistemic phenomena where group membership is uncertain or variable.

BISIMULATIONS FOR KNOWING HOW LOGICS

AbstractAs a new type of epistemic logics, the logics of knowing how capture the high-level epistemic reasoning about the knowledge of various plans to achieve certain goals. Existing work on these logics focuses on axiomatizations; this paper makes the first study of their model theoretical properties. It does so by introducing suitable notions of bisimulation for a family of five knowing how logics based on different notions of plans. As an application, we study and compare the expressive power of these logics.

Bimodal Logic with Contingency and Accident: Bisimulation and Axiomatizations

In this paper, a suitable notion of bisimulation is proposed for the bimodal logic with contingency and accident. We obtain several van Benthem Characterization Theorems, and axiomatize the bimodal logic over the class of Eulidean frames and over some more restricted classes, showing their strong completeness via a novel strategy, thereby answering two open questions raised in the literature. With the new bisimulation notion, we also correct an error in the expressivity results in the literature.

A Unifying Coalgebraic Semantics Framework for Quantum Systems

As a quantum counterpart of labeled transition system (LTS), quantum labeled transition system (QLTS) is a powerful formalism for modeling quantum programs or protocols, and gives a categorical understanding for quantum computation. With the help of quantum branching monad, QLTS provides a framework extending some ideas in non-deterministic or probabilistic systems to quantum systems. On the other hand, quantum finite automata (QFA) emerged as a very elegant and simple model for resolving some quantum computational problems. In this paper, we propose the notion of reactive quantum system (RQS), a variant of QLTS capturing reactive system behavior, and develop a coalgebraic semantics for QLTS, RQS and QFA by an endofunctor on the category of convex sets, which has a final coalgebra. Such a coalgebraic semantics provides a unifying abstract interpretation for QLTS, RQS and QFA. The notions of bisimulation and simulation can be employed to compare the behavior of different types of quantum systems and judge whether a coalgebra can be behaviorally simulated by another.
