Readings in Modern Surgery

In this well-balanced anthology of 57 new and noteworthy publications, Egdahl and Mannick have focused on those areas of clinical surgery undergoing recent change or introspection. For example, some articles introduce new operative approaches (myocardial revascularization for cardiogenic shock, ileostomy and colostomy for toxic megacolon, total pancreatectomy for ductal carcinoma), or improvements in postoperative management (rabbit antilymphocyte serum treatment in clinical transplantation, prevention of tracheal injury during intubation). Others critically reevaluate established operations like carotid endartectomy, sphincterotomy vs choledochoduodenostomy, and hiatus hernia repair. The results of surgery for parathyroid tumors, recurrent hiatus hernia repair, and pulmonary resection for metastatic lesions are updated, and recommendations for alterations in technique or patient management are presented—eg, conservative surgery for papillary thyroid carcinoma, needle aspiration for breast cysts, and transperitoneal drainage of subphrenic abscess. Scale-Model Displacement Studies To Predict Flow Behavior During Cementing

Tests were conducted in model wellbores at lower laminar and turbulent flow to determine the influence of relative mud-cement weights and yield values upon displacement efficiency. Fluid properties were examined in both a model and a rotational viscometer and the results were compared so that additional scale-model values could be predicted. Introduction Several noteworthy publications written before 1960 apply either directly or indirectly to the problems in fluid flow with which we are concerned here. Among them are the Babbitt and Caldwell report of experiments with sludges and the Metzner and Reed work with the Power Law model for fluid-flow calculations. Weltmann and Green describe the phenomenon of thixotropy. Of the many good examinations in the geometries of fluid flow, two of special interest are those from Piercy et al. and Melrose et al. that consider annular configurations. Howard and Clark applied the known technology to the process of oil-well cementing in their experiments. Although it appeared that the problems were alleviated, cementing difficulties continue. In more recent work, the techniques of nonNewtonian rheology have been applied to real fluid systems, and the limitations of the mathematical models frequently used for generalized calculations have been explored. Ritter and Batycky and Perkins and Turner have applied the concept of thixotropy to improve pipeline design for handling rheologically complex fluids. McLean et al. and others have explored the variation of geometric factors and have evaluated the analytical techniques for solving problems considering this variable. problems considering this variable. The work discussed here seeks to determine how relative mud-cement density and yield values influence displacement efficiency during lower laminar flow and turbulent-flow cementing operations. Mud was displaced by cement at different flow rates from the centralized annulus of a 1-in. pipe in a series of 2.5-in.-ID cardboard tubes. The annular flow rates were chosen to approximate the shear rates of 50, 100, and 200 rpm in a rotational viscometer. A shear rate of 1,300 sec-1 was chosen for turbulent flow. The dependency of yield value on quiescent time and load rate was examined in viscometer, a pipe, and a model, and the results were compared for prediction of additional values from viscometer data. Cardboard tubes were selected to represent the wellbore in these experiments because they will absorb water from the mud and permit a filter cake to form; and to a reasonable extent one can control the thickness of the filter cake by controlling the time that the system is wetted with water before the mud is introduced. The models were designed with the bottom end of the pipe closed so that circulation was through six ports whose total cross-sectional area equalled the area inside the pipe. These ports were located 6 in. from bottom and phased 60 apart. Future investigations using the methods reported here are expected to include an evaluation of simulated washouts of several shapes and sizes as well as a study of the effect of eccentric rather than concentric location of the pipe. Selected Writings on American National Character and Related Subjects to 1969

IN 1963 AMERICAN QUARTERLY PUBLISHED A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AMERICAN national character for the years since 1940. The present listing supplements that earlier one by bringing it up to date and by including noteworthy publications from the period 1940-63 that had previously escaped the bibliographer's eye. The principle of selection remains the same: patently impressionistic or exhibitionistic writings, however engaging, are excluded; empirical studies, however drab or microscopic, are admitted. But because it is no easier-in some ways it is much more difficult -in 1969 than it was in 1963 to draw a hard, clear line between impressionism and social science, discretion has been exercised, as before, on the side of liberality in the inclusion of marginal materials. The bibliography is limited to published studies in English. An asterisk (*) indicates that the title so marked contains a useful bibliography. Paperbacks and paperback reprints are identified by a dagger (t); in the case of paperback reprints the publishing data given refers to the original hardcover publication. does not appear. First page follows. Introduction The literature on the common fig is voluminous and dates from very early times. Three or four centuries before the Christian era, Greek poets such as Hesiod mentioned this fruit in their lyrics. Aristotle told of the fig insect, called “psen”, which pierced unripe figs and prevented their falling. Theophrastus reported that seedlings of figs and of other fruits were almost universally inferior. He gave directions for propagation by cuttings and for grafting mature trees. It was only natural that Greek and also Roman writers should have given us various accounts of the fig which was such a common fruit and so highly esteemed by them. The Phoenicians and the Moors were instrumental in extending the culture of figs not only along the Mediterranean coasts but also along the Atlantic coast of Africa. In Spain and Portugal fig culture assumed as great importance as in Greece and Italy or even greater. Naturally there appeared in the literature of these countries books and other publications in which the fig and its qualities are discussed. An especially noteworthy publication is the two-volume work of the Moor, Ibn-Al-Awam (1150-1170 A.D.) who devoted several pages to detailed instructions on propagation of the fig tree and its culture, uses of the fruit and its medicinal properties.

THIS comprehensive Polish work on the physics (and incidentally much geology) of the globe, the sea and the atmosphere is a noteworthy publication and does credit to its author and his nation. It opens with a brief history of astronomy with reference to the earth and its relation to the sun, moon and planets. This is followed by a sketch of the geological epochs and such physical and chemical considerations as the magnetism and composition of the interior of the earth.

The Place and Teaching of Calculus in Secondary Schools

The past two decades have seen many changes in the mathematics of secondary schools both in aim, method, and content. This movement to vitalize mathematics and make it more appreciative was begun in 1901 by Professor Perry who was at that time in charge of certain apprenticeship schools in London and who felt that the traditional mathematics of those schools meant little to the pupils in their later work. The reform movement in this country was started by Professor E. II. Moore of the University of Chicago. In 1903 associations of mathematics teachers were formed in various parts of the United States and mathematics magazines were established in order to spread the movement among classroom teachers. After twenty years of persistent effort on the part of reformers, we can see a marked change in aim, method, and content of mathematical curricula through new types of text books, efforts of progressive teachers, and through investigations and reports of national and international committees culminating in the Reorganization of Mathematics in Secondary Education by the National Committee of Mathematics Requirements under the auspices of the Mathematics Association of America. This noteworthy publication furnishes a national basis from which future improvement is assured.

The Cost of Municipal Government in Massachusetts

This is a noteworthy publication by reason of its significance as well as on account of its contents. It signalizes the opening of a new chapter in the official statistics of Massachusetts, and is indicative of the recognition by the legislature,?belated, to be sure, but still welcome, after four years of urging?of the need of a comprehensive, authoritative annual survey of the financial operations of the cities and towns of the Common? wealth, in addition to the statements of their debts, sinking funds, liabilities, and assets which have been published annu? ally for many years by the Tax Commissioner. This report makes it possible for the first time to obtain a <slear view of the receipts and expenditures of each and all of the municipalities of the Commonwealth without engaging in the ungrateful task of attempting to reduce the reports of 33 cities and 321 towns to a uniform basis in order to ex?
