Initial atmospheric conditions control transport of volcanic volatiles, forcing and impacts

Abstract. Volcanic eruptions impact the climate and environment. The volcanic forcing is determined by eruption source parameters, including the mass and composition of volcanic volatiles, eruption season, eruption latitude, and injection altitude. Moreover, initial atmospheric conditions of the climate system play an important role in shaping the volcanic forcing and response. However, our understanding of the combination of these factors, the distinctions between tropical and extratropical volcanic eruptions, and the co-injection of sulfur and halogens remains limited. Here, we perform ensemble simulations of volcanic eruptions at 15 and 64° N in January, injecting 17 Mt of SO2 together with HCl and HBr at 24 km altitude. Our findings reveal that initial atmospheric conditions control the transport of volcanic volatiles from the first month and modulate the subsequent latitudinal distribution of sulfate aerosols and halogens. This results in different volcanic forcing, surface temperature and ozone responses over the globe and Northern Hemisphere extratropics (NHET) among the model ensemble members with different initial atmospheric conditions. NH extratropical eruptions exhibit a larger NHET mean volcanic forcing, surface cooling and ozone depletion compared with tropical eruptions. However, tropical eruptions lead to more prolonged impacts compared with NH extratropical eruptions, both globally and in the NHET. The sensitivity of volcanic forcing to varying eruption source parameters and model dependency is discussed, emphasizing the need for future multi-model studies to consider the influence of initial conditions and eruption source parameters on volcanic forcing and subsequent impacts.

Validation of Satellite‐Based Cloud Phase Distributions Using Global‐Scale In Situ Airborne Observations

AbstractUnderstanding distributions of cloud thermodynamic phases is important for accurately representing cloud radiative effects and cloud feedback in a changing climate. Satellite‐based cloud phase data have been frequently used to compare with climate models, yet few studies validated them against in situ observations at a near‐global scale. This study aims to validate three satellite‐based cloud phase products using a compositive in situ airborne data set developed from 11 flight campaigns. Latitudinal‐altitudinal cross sections of cloud phase occurrence frequencies are examined. The Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) show the most similar vertical profiles of ice phase frequencies compared with in situ observations. The CloudSat data overestimate mixed‐phase frequencies up to 15 km but provide better sampling through cloud layers than lidar data. The DARDAR (raDAR/liDAR) data show a sharp transition between ice and liquid phase and overestimate ice phase frequency at most altitudes and latitudes. The satellite data are further evaluated for various latitudes, longitudes, and seasons, which show higher ice phase frequency in the extratropics in their respective wintertime and smaller impacts from longitudinal variations. The Southern Ocean shows a thicker mixing region where liquid and ice phases have similar frequencies compared with tropics and Northern Hemisphere (NH) extratropics. Two comparison methods with different spatiotemporal windows show similar results, which demonstrates the statistical robustness of these comparisons. Overall, this study develops a near global‐scale in situ observational data set to assess the accuracy of satellite‐based cloud phase products and investigates the key factors affecting the distributions of cloud phases.

The Contribution of Aeolus Wind Observations to ECMWF Sea Surface Wind Forecasts

AbstractAeolus is the first satellite mission focusing on wind profile detection from near the surface to about 30 km in height on a global scale. This study evaluates the contribution of Aeolus winds to sea surface wind forecasts geographically by further analyzing the Observing System Experiments from the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) with scatterometer winds from the meteorological operational satellites (assimilated into the model) and the Haiyang‐2B satellite (not assimilated into the model). The findings indicate that Aeolus has the ability to reduce the root‐mean‐square difference between scatterometer winds and background forecasts (short‐range) by about 0.05%–0.16% on average for climatic regions, except for the meridional wind component in the tropics. Also, Aeolus can generally reduce zonal biases of the background forecasts, while its beneficial impact on meridional biases mainly occurs in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics and tropics. For medium‐range forecast assessments, as the forecast step extends up to day 5, the positive impact of Aeolus on sea surface wind forecasts becomes more evident and is even greater than 3%, especially for extratropical ocean regions in the Southern Hemisphere. Furthermore, the impact of Aeolus shows seasonal variation, with a substantial positive impact from September 2019 to February 2020 and a negative impact mainly in March, April, and May 2020.

Persistent warm and cold spells in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics: regionalisation, synoptic-scale dynamics and temperature budget

Abstract. Persistent warm and cold spells are often high-impact events that may lead to significant increases in mortality and crop damage and can put substantial pressure on the power grid. Taking their spatial dependence into account is critical to understand the associated risks, whether in present-day or future climates. Here, we present a novel regionalisation approach of 3-week warm and cold spells in winter and summer across the Northern Hemisphere extratropics based on the association of the warm and cold spells with large-scale circulation. We identify spatially coherent but not necessarily connected regions where spells tend to co-occur over 3-week timescales and are associated with similar large-scale circulation patterns. We discuss the physical drivers responsible for persistent extreme temperature anomalies. Cold spells systematically result from northerly cold advection, whereas warm spells are caused by either adiabatic warming (in summer) or warm advection (in winter). We also discuss some key mechanisms contributing to the persistence of temperature extremes. Blocks are important upper-level features associated with such events – co-localised blocks for persistent summer warm spells in the northern latitudes; downstream blocks for winter cold spells in the eastern edges of continental landmasses; and upstream blocks for winter cold spells in Europe, northwestern North America and east Asia. Recurrent Rossby wave patterns are also relevant for cold and warm spell persistence in many mid-latitude regions, in particular in central and southern Europe. Additionally, summer warm spells are often accompanied by negative precipitation anomalies that likely play an important role through land–atmosphere feedbacks.

Northern Hemisphere Extratropical Cyclone Clustering in ERA5 Reanalysis and the CESM2 Large Ensemble

Abstract Extratropical cyclones are a dominant feature of the midlatitudes, and often occur as storm sequences. This phenomenon is known as cyclone clustering, which is common over regions like the eastern North Atlantic and western Europe. Here, intense clustered cyclones may lead to large cumulative socioeconomic impacts. There are several different approaches to quantify cyclone clustering, but a detailed evaluation on how clustering may change in a warmer climate is missing. We perform a cyclone clustering analysis for the Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes using the ERA5 reanalysis to characterize clustering during 1980–2020. Moreover, we use large ensemble simulations of the Community Earth System Model version 2 following the SSP3-7.0 scenario to compare clustering during 2060–2100 to 1980–2020. Our model simulations show significant enhancement in cyclone clustering over Europe for 3 and 4 cyclones within 7 days in the future decades, which is increasing by up to 25% on average during 2060–2100 compared to 1980–2020. In contrast, cyclone clustering decreases along the west coast of the United States and Canada by up to 24.3% and by 10.1% in the Gulf of Alaska for the same periods. In a warmer climate, clustered cyclones have lower minimum pressure and larger radii and depths compared to nonclustered events. Our findings suggest that change in future cyclone clustering depends on regions affected by global warming, with implications for the cumulative windstorm risk. Significance Statement Storm sequences like the one of December 1999 (Anatol, Lothar, and Martin) have led to large socioeconomic impacts in Europe. It is still unclear how such events will change under global warming. We analyze storm sequences in a reanalysis and a large climate model ensemble for recent (1980–2020) and future climate conditions (2060–2100). Our results show a significant enhancement of storm sequences over Europe for 3 and 4 storms within 7 days, while a decrease is found along the west coast of the United States, western Canada, and in the Gulf of Alaska in future decades. Our findings suggest that the characteristics of cyclone clustering may change in a warmer world, and thus also the associated impacts.

MJO Influence on Subseasonal-to-Seasonal Prediction in the Northern Hemisphere Extratropics

Abstract The impacts of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) on the subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) prediction in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics are examined using the reforecasts from the S2S Project and Subseasonal Experiment Project (SubX). When forecasts are initialized during an active MJO, extratropical prediction skill becomes significantly higher at 3–4-week windows compared to inactive MJO. Such prediction skill improvement is evident in the 500-hPa geopotential height over the Pacific–North America region and the North Atlantic and in surface temperature over North America, especially when the model is initialized during the MJO phases 6–7 and 8–1. However, the extratropical prediction skill is not modulated by the MJO phases 2–3 and 4–5. This phase dependency is likely determined by the arrival time of the MJO at the Maritime Continent (MC) barrier that substantially enhances the MJO amplitude error. This result suggests that only MJO phases whose convection lies east of the MC are a source of wintertime S2S predictability in the extratropics.

Scale‐dependent impact of Aeolus winds on a global forecast system

AbstractThe European Space Agency's Aeolus mission, launched in August 2018, provides the first global horizontal line‐of‐sight wind profile measurements. Previous studies have shown that Aeolus winds in global forecast systems improve the overall forecast skill, especially in the upper tropospheric tropics and in other data‐sparse regions. In this study, we use a series of observing system experiments with the latest version of the reprocessed Aeolus wind product (2B11) to better characterize the locations and drivers of improved skill from Aeolus with Environment and Climate Change Canada's Global Deterministic Prediction System. Observing system experiments that test the impact of Aeolus winds and the impact of all operational wind observations are carried out, covering the period summer 2019 and winter 2019–2020. Assimilation of operational winds improves the tropospheric wind forecast over the Tropics by a reduction of 8% in the forecast error, and adding the Aeolus winds to the assimilations results in an extra 0.7–0.9%. Aeolus wind impacts are improvements are 0.7–0.9% for the Arctic, and 0.4–0.6% over the Northern and Southern Hemisphere extratropics. The scale dependence of these impacts is investigated using spatial spectra (spherical harmonic decomposition). The improvement is quantified using the difference of the 250 hPa kinetic energy forecast error spectra between experiments. The operational winds largely improve the forecast of planetary scale to intermediate scale for spherical wave numbers between 1 and 20 in the short‐range forecasts. The operational wind impact decreases as the forecast lead time increases. On the other hand, the impact of Aeolus is mostly seen in the intermediate to large scale range with a peak around spherical wave number 8. The Aeolus‐related improvement around this wave number increases with forecast lead time. This analysis suggests that Aeolus winds provide estimates of the wind state that are valuable and complementary to that provided from current operational winds.

Influence of stratosphere-troposphere exchange on long-term trends of surface ozone in CMIP6

Surface ozone, which is a major air pollutant, has gained widespread public attention due to its significant harm to human health and ecosystems. Here we find that long-term trends of surface ozone are largely influenced by stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE) using the historical simulations in the CMIP6 multi-model ensemble. It is found that STE contributes up to 39.5% of climatological surface ozone in the extratropics of the winter hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere (SH), prominent stratospheric ozone depletion tends to reduce tropospheric and surface ozone due to STE over 1960–1997, which has been reversed during 1997–2014. In the Northern Hemisphere (NH), STE enhances surface ozone during both ozone depletion and recovery periods. About 29.5% of the positive trends of surface ozone over 1960–2014 can be attributed to STE processes in boreal winter in the NH extratropics. The enhancement of STE is related to the changes in atmospheric circulation associated with global warming. Our results suggest that STE will further worsen surface ozone pollution in the future associated with the stratospheric ozone recovery and global warming.

Observationally Constrained Projections of Twenty-First-Century Regional Warming in the Extratropical Northern Hemisphere

Abstract Physically based observational constraint methods can effectively reduce uncertainty in global warming projections but have not been widely applied at regional scales. We first develop and apply multivariate linear regression models for constraining projections of surface air temperature averaged over subcontinental regions in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere, based on a set of potential constraints including climatological metrics derived from tropical and subtropical low-level cloud and global average past warming trend, as well as a set of regional climate metrics previously used in the literature. We evaluate the performance of the multivariate linear regression models based on cross-validated tests using output from phases 5 and 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Projects (CMIP). We find that linear regression models using global-scale low-cloud metrics alone perform more robustly than linear regression models using the past global mean warming trend or regional climate metrics as constraints. These results, while favoring global constraints over the set of regional constraints considered, do not preclude the existence of even better regional constraints for particular regions. Through model-based cross-validation, the projections constrained using low-level cloud metrics exhibit more accurate best estimate projections, narrower uncertainty ranges, and more reliable uncertainty estimates in most Northern Hemisphere regions when compared with unconstrained projections. Application of the approach to climate projections based on both Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) 1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 using observed low-cloud metrics results in considerably narrower 5%–95% uncertainty ranges of twenty-first-century warming over subcontinental Northern Hemisphere land regions compared to unconstrained projections.

Impacts of Volcanic Emissions on the Global Biogeochemical Mercury Cycle: Insights From Satellite Observations and Chemical Transport Modeling

AbstractVolcanism is the largest natural source of mercury (Hg) to the biosphere. However, past Hg emission estimates have varied by three orders of magnitude. Here, we present an updated central estimate and interquartile range (232 Mg a−1; IQR: 170–336 Mg a−1) for modern volcanic Hg emissions based on advances in satellite remote sensing of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and an improved method for considering uncertainty in Hg:SO2 emissions ratios. Atmospheric modeling shows the influence of volcanic Hg on surface atmospheric concentrations in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere is 1.8 times higher than in the Southern Hemisphere. Spatiotemporal variability in volcanic Hg emissions may obscure atmospheric trends forced by anthropogenic emissions at some locations. This should be considered when selecting monitoring sites to inform global regulatory actions. Volcanic emission estimates from this work suggest the pre‐anthropogenic global atmospheric Hg reservoir was 580 Mg, 7‐fold lower than in 2015 (4,000 Mg).

Seasonal Dependence of the Pacific–North American Teleconnection Associated with ENSO and Its Interaction with the Annual Cycle

Abstract The Pacific–North American (PNA) teleconnection pattern is one of the prominent atmospheric circulation modes in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere, and its seasonal to interannual predictability is suggested to originate from El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Intriguingly, the PNA teleconnection pattern exhibits variance at near-annual frequencies, which is related to a rapid phase reversal of the PNA pattern during ENSO years, whereas the ENSO sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical Pacific are evolving much slower in time. This distinct seasonal feature of the PNA pattern can be explained by an amplitude modulation of the interannual ENSO signal by the annual cycle (i.e., the ENSO combination mode). The ENSO-related seasonal phase transition of the PNA pattern is reproduced well in an atmospheric general circulation model when both the background SST annual cycle and ENSO SST anomalies are prescribed. In contrast, this characteristic seasonal evolution of the PNA pattern is absent when the tropical Pacific background SST annual cycle is not considered in the modeling experiments. The background SST annual cycle in the tropical Pacific modulates the ENSO-associated tropical Pacific convection response, leading to a rapid enhancement of convection anomalies in winter. The enhanced convection results in a fast establishment of the large-scale PNA teleconnection during ENSO years. The dynamics of this ENSO–annual cycle interaction fills an important gap in our understanding of the seasonally modulated PNA teleconnection pattern during ENSO years.

The Long-Term Trends of Global Land Precipitation in GFDL’s CM4 and ESM4 Climate Models

Abstract Historical precipitation and temperature trends and variations over global land regions are compared with simulations of two climate models focusing on grid points with substantial observational coverage from the early twentieth century. Potential mechanisms for the differences between modeled and observed trends are investigated using subsets of historical forcings, including ones using only anthropogenic greenhouse gases or aerosols, and simulations forced with the observed sea surface temperature and sea ice distribution. For century-scale (1915–2014) precipitation trends, underestimated increasing or unrealistic decreasing trends are found in the models over the extratropical Northern Hemisphere. The temporal evolution of key discrepancies between the observations and simulations indicates that 1) for averages over 15°–45°N, while there is not a significant trend in observations, both models simulate reduced precipitation from 1940 to 2014, and 2) for 45°–80°N observations suggest sizable precipitation increases while models do not show a significant increase, particularly during ∼1950–80. The timing of differences between models and observations suggests a key role for aerosols in these dry trend biases over the extratropical Northern Hemisphere. Additionally, 3) for 15°S–15°N the observed multidecadal decrease over tropical west Africa (1950–80) is only roughly captured by simulations forced with observed sea surface temperature; additionally, 4) in the all-forcing runs, the model with higher global climate sensitivity simulates increasing trends of temperature and precipitation over lands north of 45°N that are significantly stronger than the lower-sensitivity model and more consistent with the observed increases. Thus, underestimated greenhouse gas–induced warming—particularly in the lower sensitivity model—may be another important factor, besides aerosols, contributing to the modeled biases in precipitation trends.

Volcanic Imprints in Last-Millennium Land Summer Temperatures in the Circum–North Atlantic Area

Abstract Summer cooling is one of the most direct consequences of explosive volcanic eruptions that can affect ecosystems and human societies. Recent studies revealed a multiyear cooling impact on hemispheric and global summer temperatures after tropical eruptions, yet the volcanic responses appear to vary on regional scales. Here, we revisit volcano-induced summer cooling in eastern Canada and northern and central Europe by applying superposed epoch analysis on CMIP6-PMIP4 simulations and millennial temperature reconstructions based on tree-ring density. We then examine potential causes modulating region-specific volcanic impact. While confirming that, on average, tropical eruptions over the last millennium have induced a longer cooling (>4 yr) than eruptions from extratropical Northern Hemisphere in all three North Atlantic regions, we show that the peak magnitude of cooling is stronger in eastern Canada. We also find that the detected volcanic temperature anomalies can be strongly affected by the selection and number of volcanic events and nonvolcanic signals embedded in the climate time series. This study highlights the risks of using highly noisy proxy records to investigate volcanic impacts, especially in regions with strong unforced climate variability. The CMIP6-PMIP4 simulations generally agree with the three reconstructions on the average response to tropical eruptions, but their performance is poorer regarding the production of significant cooling after extratropical eruptions. Our results further suggest that the particular sensitivity to tropical eruptions in eastern Canada is likely related to increased sea ice surrounding Quebec–Labrador associated with the positive Arctic Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation formed during the first posteruption winter.

Impact of ENSO on Wintertime Land Surface Variables in Northern Hemisphere Extratropics: Role of Atmospheric Moisture Processes

Abstract El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the strongest interannual signature in the tropical air–sea system and can affect global atmospheric variables, but ENSO’s climatic impact on land surface variables such as skin temperature, snow cover, and soil moisture that can serve as seasonal climate predictors remains relatively little known. Here we examine ENSO’s impact on the three land surface variables in Northern Hemisphere extratropics by regression analysis, using a combination of ERA5 reanalysis, GLDAS, satellite-based observations, and CESM2 simulations. Our results show that during El Niño winters anomalous land surface warming occurs in Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes, accompanied by snow cover reduction, especially in northern North America and eastern Europe, while anomalous cooling occurs in southern North America and the Tibetan Plateau, accompanied by increased snow cover. Meanwhile, increased soil moisture is observed in southern North America, central Asia, and southeast China. Further analysis indicates that atmospheric moisture processes dominate the formation of the land surface anomalies, for which the changes in water vapor and precipitation induced by the ENSO-related large-scale atmospheric teleconnection are critical. The anomalous land surface warming in midlatitudes mainly results from the increased downward longwave radiation due to the increase of water vapor, whereas the physical pathway causing water vapor anomalies is different over North America and Eurasia. Controlled by ENSO-induced changes in atmospheric circulation and moisture transport, anomalous precipitation explains most of the snow cover and soil moisture anomalies, which play a certain role in shaping the skin temperature anomalies in some regions through snow–albedo feedback and evaporation, respectively.

Reply to Comment on “Moist Static Energy Transport Trends in Four Global Reanalyses: Are They Downgradient?” by Clark et al. (2022)

AbstractIn a previous study, we investigated whether reanalysis moist static energy (MSE) transport trends over the 1980 through 2018 period are consistent (a) with each other and (b) with the finding that these transport trends are downgradient, as found in climate models. Regarding point (a), our conclusion was that MSE transport trends were dependent on the reanalysis data set. However, Cox et al. (2023) correctly point out that the reanalysis dependence is reduced dramatically if a barotropic mass flux correction is applied at a monthly mean timescale prior to computing the MSE transport trends. In our reply below, we revisit point (b) after applying this correction. We find that even after the correction, reanalysis MSE transport trends are not downgradient nor poleward in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. However, reanalysis does show a compensation between dry static and latent energy transport trends, which has been shown in climate models historically.

Evaluation of Probabilistic Forecasts of Extreme Cold Events in S2S Models

The probabilistic prediction skill of the weekly forecasts of extreme cold events (ECE) is illustrated and measured in the form of the Brier Skill Score (BSS) and the area under Relative Operating Characteristics (ROC) curves based on the subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) prediction project database. The ROC scores show that six S2S models have the good potential predictability skill required for use in ECE probabilistic forecasts, and they were more useful than climatologic probabilistic models in creating forecasts of about 3–4 weeks in length. However, the BSS results show that the actual prediction skill of six models used in ECE probabilistic forecasts are different. The ECMWF model has a good performance, and its actual probabilistic prediction skill of ECE for forecasts of about 3–4 weeks in length was higher than those of climatology, which operates close to its potential predictability. The actual probabilistic prediction skill of the NCEP model for ECE was only about 2 weeks over the extra-tropics, and no skill was recorded over the tropics given its bad reliability, especially over the tropics. BoM, JMA, and CNRM models only have a 1-week actual prediction skill over the Northern Hemisphere extra-tropics, and they have no skill over the rest of the world’s land area. The CNR-ISAC model has a 1-week actual prediction skill over the extra-tropics and about 4 weeks over the tropics. There is still much room for improvement in the prediction ability of models used for ECE. MJO in tropical regions has an important influence on the probabilistic prediction skill of ECE required at middle and high latitudes. When there is an MJO in the initial conditions, the potential predictability and actual prediction skill of ECE probabilistic forecasts over North America in the 3rd week and over Europe in the 3rd–4th weeks are higher than those without MJO.

Correcting Nonstationary Sea Surface Temperature Bias in NCEP CFSv2 Using Ensemble-Based Neural Networks

Abstract Sea surface temperature (SST) forecast products from the NCEP Climate Forecast System (CFSv2) that are widely used in climate research and prediction have nonstationary bias. In this study, we develop single- (ANN1) and three-hidden-layer (ANN3) neural networks and examine their ability to correct the SST bias in the NCEP CFSv2 extended seasonal forecast starting from July in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere. Our results show that the ensemble-based ANN1 and ANN3 can reduce the uncertainty associated with parameters assigned initially and dependence on random sampling. Overall, ANN1 reduces RMSE of the CFSv2 forecast SST substantially by 0.35°C (0.34°C) for the testing (training) data and ANN3 further reduces RMSE relatively by 0.49°C (0.47°C). Both the ensemble-based ANN1 and ANN3 can significantly reduce the spatially and temporally varying bias of the CFSv2 forecast SST in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and ANN3 shows better agreement with the observation than that of ANN1 in some subregions. Significance Statement Global coupled climate models are the primary tool for climate simulation and prediction and provide initial and boundary conditions to drive regional climate models. SST is an essential climate variable simulated and forecast by global climate models, which suffers substantial biases both spatially and temporally. We apply the ensemble averaging of both single- and three-hidden-layer neural networks on the NCEP CFSv2 SST forecast. They can correct the identified SST error, though ANN3 performs relatively better than that of ANN1. Thus, ensemble-based ANN3 is a useful SST bias correction approach.

Critical Review on Radiative Forcing and Climate Models for Global Climate Change since 1970

This review identifies a critical problem in the fundamental physics of current climate models. The large greenhouse effect of rising CO2 assumed in climate models is assessed by six key observations from ground- and satellite-based measurements. This assessment is enhanced by statistical analyses and model calculations of global or regional mean surface temperature changes by conventional climate models and by a conceptual quantum physical model of global warming due to halogen-containing greenhouse gases (halo-GHGs). The postulated large radiative forcing of CO2 in conventional climate models does not agree with satellite observations. Satellite-observed warming pattern resembles closely the atmospheric distribution of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). This review helps understand recent remarkable observations of reversals from cooling to warming in the lower stratosphere over most continents and in the upper stratosphere at high latitudes, surface warming cessations in the Antarctic, North America, UK, and Northern-Hemisphere (NH) extratropics, and the stabilization in NH or North America snow cover, since the turn of the century. The complementary observation of surface temperature changes in 3 representative regions (Central England, the Antarctic, and the Arctic) sheds new light on the primary mechanism of global warming. These observations agree well with not CO2-based climate models but the CFC-warming quantum physical model. The latter offers parameter-free analytical calculations of surface temperature changes, exhibiting remarkable agreement with observations. These observations overwhelmingly support an emerging picture that halo-GHGs made the dominant contribution to global warming in the late 20th century and that a gradual reversal in warming has occurred since ~2005 due to the phasing out of halo-GHGs. Advances and insights from this review may help humans make rational policies to reverse the past warming and maintain a healthy economy and ecosystem.

Regional pollen-based Holocene temperature and precipitation patterns depart from the Northern Hemisphere mean trends

Abstract. A mismatch between model- and proxy-based Holocene climate change, known as the “Holocene conundrum”, may partially originate from the poor spatial coverage of climate reconstructions in, for example, Asia, limiting the number of grid cells for model–data comparisons. Here we investigate hemispheric, latitudinal, and regional mean time series and time-slice anomaly maps of pollen-based reconstructions of mean annual temperature, mean July temperature, and annual precipitation from 1908 records in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. Temperature trends show strong latitudinal patterns and differ between (sub-)continents. While the circum-Atlantic regions in Europe and eastern North America show a pronounced Middle Holocene temperature maximum, western North America shows only weak changes, and Asia mostly shows a continuous Holocene temperature increase. Likewise, precipitation trends show certain regional peculiarities such as the pronounced Middle Holocene precipitation maximum between 40 and 50∘ N in Asia and Holocene increasing trends in Europe and western North America, which can all be linked with Holocene changes in the regional circulation pattern responding to temperature change. Given a background of strong regional heterogeneity, we conclude that the calculation of global or hemispheric means, which initiated the Holocene conundrum debate, should focus more on understanding the spatiotemporal patterns and their regional drivers.

Changes in Stratosphere‐Troposphere Exchange of Air Mass and Ozone Concentration in CCMI Models From 1960 to 2099

AbstractThis study investigates changes in stratosphere‐troposphere exchange (STE) of air masses and ozone concentrations from 1960 to 2099 using multiple model simulations from Chemistry Climate Model Initiative (CCMI) under climate change scenario RCP6.0. We employ a lowermost stratosphere mass budget approach with dynamic isentropic surfaces fitted to the tropical tropopause as the upper boundary of lowermost stratosphere. The multi‐model mean (MMM) trends of air mass STEs are all small over all regions, which are within 0.3 (0.1) % decade−1 for 1960–2000 (2000–2099). The MMM trends of ozone STE for 1960–2000 are 0.3%, −2.7%, 3.4%, −0.9%, and −2.7% decade−1 over the Northern hemisphere (NH) extratropics, Southern hemisphere (SH) extratropics, tropics, extratropics, and globe, respectively. The corresponding ozone STE trends for 2000–2099 are 3.0%, 4.3%, 0.8%, 3.5%, and 4.7% decade−1. Changes in ozone STEs are dominated by ozone concentration changes, driven by climate‐induced changes and ozone‐depleting substance (ODS) changes. For 1960–2000, small changes in ozone STEs in the NH extratropics are due to a cancellation between effects of climate‐induced changes and ODS increases, while the ODS effect dominates in the SH extratropics, leading to a large ozone STE magnitude decrease. Increased ozone transport from tropical troposphere to stratosphere for 1960–2000 is due to increased tropospheric ozone. A decreased global ozone STE magnitude for 1960–2000 was largely caused by ODS‐induced ozone loss that is partly compensated by climate‐induced ozone changes. For 2000–2099, about two‐thirds of global ozone STE magnitude increases are caused by ozone increases in the extratropical lower stratosphere due to climate‐induced changes. The remaining one‐third is caused by ozone recovery due to the phaseout of ODS.
