Seasonal Variability of the Deep Western Boundary Current in the Philippine Sea

The deep western boundary current (DWBC) in the Philippine Sea has been expected to play a crucial role in transporting lower circumpolar deep water and to contribute to regional and global climate regulation. Two-year-long near-bottom current measurements reveal a southward-flowing DWBC with a mean velocity of 5 cm/s and seasonal variations—weaker in summer and stronger in winter. Seasonal variability in the DWBC is hypothesized to be induced by changes in the North Equatorial Current bifurcation latitude (NECBL) and upper pycnocline depth through potential vorticity conservation. Data-assimilated reanalysis model (GLORYS12V1) outputs, which reproduce the seasonal variability of DWBC similarly to the observation, are used for further analysis. During the seasonal period, the NECBL displays significant coherence (>0.9) with the first-mode empirical orthogonal function principal component of the simulated along-slope DWBC. The upper pycnocline depth, varying seasonally within a range of approximately 27 m, induces seasonal variability in a deep anticyclonic eddy trapped by topography. In summer, the intensified deep anticyclonic eddy obstructs the adjacent southward-flowing DWBC, weakening its strength, whereas in winter, the southward flow of the DWBC is enhanced due to the weakening of the deep anticyclonic eddy.

Phase Shift of the Winter South China Sea Western Boundary Current Over the Past Two Decades and Its Drivers

AbstractThe winter South China Sea (SCS) western boundary current (WBC) has presented a significant weak–strong–weak phase shift in the last two decades, as revealed by observations and model products. Its phase shift has mainly been attributed to the joint effect of wind stress curl over the SCS and Luzon Strait transport (LST). Changes in the wind stress curl and planetary vorticity input through the Luzon Strait are the two major sources maintaining the winter SCS WBC state in different phases. The LST is closely related to the Kuroshio strength and thus the Pacific North Equatorial Current (NEC) bifurcation. Therefore, the winter SCS WBC phase shift is attributed to phase shifts of the winter monsoon and the NEC bifurcation, which are mostly related to those of the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, respectively. Understanding the SCS circulation low‐frequency variability is essential to forecast its thermodynamic state and regional climate effect.

Intensified modulation of the Pacific north equatorial current bifurcation by the southern annular mode since the early 1990s

Long-term reanalysis data were used to assess inter-decadal to decadal modulations of the North Equatorial Current (NEC) bifurcation in the Pacific after the early 1990s. The wind stress curl anomaly (WSCA) in the region of 10° N-15° N and 160° E-170° E (C-BOX) had been found to excite Rossby waves and control NEC bifurcation along the Philippine coast. Our analysis revealed that the WSCA in the C-BOX has been remotely modulated by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) since the early 1990s. It is shown that the SAM shifted to its positive phase at this transition and began strongly impacting the WSCA in the C-BOX and the NEC bifurcation. During the positive SAM phase after the early 1990s, strong climate variability occurred in the tropical to subtropical area of the North Pacific, with a clear footprint connected to the Antarctic region. Consistent with that finding, we determined that during the positive SAM phase, a dipole sea surface temperature pattern was generated in the South Pacific; this induced an atmospheric Rossby wave train in upper-level wind shear that propagated northward to the North Pacific. Such effects further enhanced downward motion and divergence at the surface, intensifying the easterlies in the equatorial area and the anticyclonic WSCA in the C-BOX. The anticyclonic WSCA in the C-BOX substantially excited downwelling oceanic Rossby waves at the surface, inducing an equatorward trend of NEC bifurcation after the early 1990s.

On the north equatorial current spatiotemporal modes and responses in the western boundary currents

The North Equatorial Current (NEC) and western boundary currents (WBCs) of the Kuroshio Current (KC) and the Mindanao Current (MC) characterize the circulation pattern and water mass transports in the tropical western North Pacific. We utilized the validated three-dimensional and time-dependent China Sea Multi-scale Ocean Modeling System to investigate the variability of the WBCs and the physical processes linked with the upstream NEC and associated with the circulation. The latitude-dependent KC and MC strengthen downstream from the NEC bifurcation (NB) and are maintained by the northern and southern parts of the NEC, respectively. By effectively isolating the NEC spatiotemporal modes representing its intensity, meridional migration, and bifurcation location, we investigate the responses of the WBCs to the characteristics in an integrated NEC-WBCs current system. The NEC intensity peaks in spring and summer, while its bifurcation location strongly correlates with its migration. The southward (northward) NEC migration during early spring (late autumn) feeds more NEC waters to the MC (KC). Yet, the simultaneous southward (northward) shifting NB distributes more NEC waters to the KC (MC) and offset the contribution of the migration. Thus, the intensity of the KC (MC) is primarily controlled by the NEC intensity, reaching the maximum during spring (summer). The specific water masses such as the North Pacific Tropical Water and the Equatorial Surface Water, are bounded by the time-dependent NB, distributing northward and southward respectively through the WBCs. By resolving spatiotemporal modes in NEC-KC-MC, the study provides a new understanding to the WBCs in the NEC-WBCs current system.

Decreasing trend of kuroshio intrusion and its effect on the chlorophyll-a concentration in the Luzon Strait, South China Sea

ABSTRACT Material exchange between oceans and currents is crucial for biogeochemical processes in marginal seas, such as the Kuroshio intrusion in the Luzon Strait, which contributes to nutrient and phytoplankton growth in the adjacent water. Therefore, it is necessary to understand changes in major current systems and their possible effects on marine ecology. In this study, we applied an edge-detection method to satellite-derived sea-surface temperature (SST) images to identify the SST front as the index of Kuroshio intrusion during 1985–2017. Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations and geostrophic currents (determined from satellite observations after 1993) were examined by comparing long-term variations related to the Kuroshio front using empirical-mode decomposition analysis. The Kuroshio intrusion into the Luzon Strait gradually decreased after the 1990s, as did the Chl-a concentrations and current speed in the Strait. In contrast, the speed of the Kuroshio Current in the eastern Philippine tended to increase, indicating that the northward Kuroshio Current from the eastern Philippines became stronger, curtailing the westward intrusion of the branch current into the Luzon Strait. The speed of the Kuroshio Current correlated with the bifurcation of the North Equatorial Current (NEC), which is upstream of the Kuroshio Current starting from the southeast Philippines. Therefore, the NEC bifurcation latitude may have shifted more southward, which strengthened the water mass and current speed of the Kuroshio, resulting in decreased westward motion of the Kuroshio through the Luzon Strait. Consequently, the weakening Kuroshio intrusion may have caused a decreasing trend of biogeochemical processes in the South China Sea.

Intraseasonal Variability of the North Equatorial Current Bifurcation Off the Philippines

AbstractCharacteristics of the intraseasonal variability (ISV) of the North Equatorial Current bifurcation latitude (NBL) are analyzed by using both observations and reanalysis data. The maximum amplitude of the ISV of the NBL can reach about 6° of latitude, which almost triples its annual excursion. The NBL shows a broad spectral peak around 50–140 days with the highest peak occurring around 73 days. Both the Madden‐Julian oscillation and mesoscale eddies have a significant impact on its ISV. A case study for a cyclonic eddy indicates that it can transport about 1.5 Sv (1 Sv–106 m3 s−1) waters to the NBL, and the bifurcation shifts northward with an amplitude of about 8° of latitude in 1 month. Meanwhile, the influence of mesoscale eddies on the ISV of the NBL is highly modulated by the interannual variations of the eddy field. Active eddy activities associated with enhanced barotropic and baroclinic instabilities show a large influence on the NBL. The eddy kinetic energy level around the NBL showed a quite diverse character for the 1997–1998 and the 2015–2016 extreme El Niños, with the latter being double or triple that of the former due to the much stronger vertical and horizontal shears. Given the significant impact on the NBL by the individual eddies and the unevenly distributed cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies around the NBL, the effect of mesoscale eddies on the bifurcation latitude may not cancel each other on seasonal or interannual time scales.

Variations of the Kuroshio in the Luzon Strait Revealed by EOF Analysis of Repeated XBT Data and Sea‐Level Anomalies

AbstractThe Kuroshio in the Luzon Strait (KLS) has long been a focus of research for its complex ocean dynamics; however, it is poorly understood owing to a lack of long‐term in situ observations. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analyses were applied to quarterly expendable bathythermograph data (XBT, with a spatial resolution of 10–20 km in the Kuroshio region and 33 km in the other regions) and sea‐level anomaly (SLA) data, to examine the variations of the KLS. The first EOF modes of water temperature and SLA represent seasonal variations. The volume transport of the KLS referring to a 700 m depth reaches its maximum in warm months (19.4 Sv, July–September) and its minimum in cold months (17 Sv, January–March). This variation is similar to that east of Taiwan but is opposite to that east of Luzon, although the Luzon Strait is only 2° distant from the area east of Luzon. The outflow (1.3 Sv) from the South China Sea (SCS) to the Kuroshio in the warm months and the Kuroshio intrusion into the SCS in the cold months are responsible for this seasonal contrast. The second EOF modes of water temperature and SLA are related to the latitudinal movement of the Kuroshio recirculation on a time scale of 2–24 months. Lag correlation and wavelet analysis demonstrate that this mode is triggered by the westward‐propagating SLA along 21°–24°N and is affected by the downstream propagation of low‐frequency variation (mostly annual to biennial) from the North Equatorial Current bifurcation area.

Pacific North Equatorial Current bifurcation latitude and Kuroshio Current shifts since the Last Glacial Maximum inferred from a Sulu Sea thermocline reconstruction

The meridional migration of the bifurcation latitude of the Pacific North Equatorial Current (NEC) in the western boundary of the tropical Pacific modulates the strength of the Kuroshio Current. Using salinity reanalysis data, we show the NEC bifurcation latitude also acts as the dominant control on thermocline salinity of the Sulu Sea, just west of the Philippine archipelago, by regulating influx of western Pacific thermocline water via the Luzon Strait. We used oxygen isotopes (δ18O) and Mg/Ca in the thermocline-dwelling foraminifera Globorotalia tumida from Sulu Sea sediment core MD97-2141 to determine past thermocline δ18Ow and salinity variability spanning ∼20–5 ka with an average sampling interval of ∼50 years and infer past changes in the NEC bifurcation latitude. Our Sulu Sea thermocline reconstruction reveals high salinity from ∼18.8–15.5 ka, ∼12.2–11.5 ka, and from ∼9.5–8.5 ka indicating the NEC bifurcation latitude was shifted north and the Kuroshio was weak at those times. Low Sulu Sea thermocline salinity from ∼13.0–12.4 ka, ∼11.5–10.9 ka, and from ∼8.5 ka until the end of the record at ∼5.6 ka indicates the NEC bifurcation latitude was shifted south and the Kuroshio Current was relatively strong. Comparison to other paleoclimate records suggests the observed northward (southward) shifts of the NEC bifurcation latitude were driven by southward (northward) shifts of the Indo-Pacific ITCZ, consistent with modern mechanisms controlling interannual NEC bifurcation variability. The NEC bifurcation latitude shifts likely modulated northward energy transport via the Kuroshio Current and the mean temperature and salinity of the Indonesian Throughflow.

Can Tropical Pacific Winds Enhance the Footprint of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation on the Upper-Ocean Heat Content in the South China Sea?

AbstractIn this study, an enhanced footprint of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO) on the upper-ocean heat content (OHC) in the South China Sea (SCS) since the 1990s is revealed. The negative OHC–IPO correlation is significant (r= −0.71) during 1990–2010 [period 2 (P2)], whereas it is statistically insignificant during 1960–80 [period 1 (P1)]. Analyses show that the scope of the equatorial Pacific wind anomalies is wider during P2 compared with that during P1 due to a larger east–west SST gradient and enhanced tropical warming in the Indian Ocean. When the IPO is negative during P2, a wider scope of the wind stress anomalies associated with the IPO could lead to 1) the southward migration of the North Equatorial Current bifurcation latitude (NECBL) by affecting the wind stress curl over the key region where it is near the climatological NECBL and 2) an increase in the interbasin pressure gradient (sea surface height difference) between the western Pacific and the SCS; these two processes strengthen the Kuroshio and weaken the Luzon Strait transport (LST) or SCS throughflow into the SCS. Also, 3) the equatorial Pacific wind anomalies are wide enough to directly weaken the LST in the SCS through the “island rule.” These three pathways finally change the oceanic gyre in the SCS and increase the OHC. Our results suggest that the scope of the tropical wind stress is the crucial factor when we consider the relationship between the upper ocean thermal conditions in the SCS and the Pacific variability.

Radiolarian assemblage as an indicator of environmental conditions in the marginal seas of the Western North Pacific

Abstract In this study, we analyzed 45 surface sediment samples collected in the marginal seas of the Western North Pacific, including the South China Sea, the East China Sea, and the Philippine Sea, to investigate the radiolarian assemblages and their relationship with upper layer environmental conditions. Based on the results of Q-mode cluster analysis, the radiolarian assemblages can be divided into four clusters, corresponding to the North Equatorial Current assemblage, North Equatorial Current Bifurcation assemblage, Kuroshio–South China Sea assemblage, and Kuroshio–East China Sea assemblage. Winter sea surface temperature (SSTw), winter sea surface salinity (SSSw), and annual silicate concentration were the most significant environmental variables associated with the radiolarian assemblages, among which SSTw showed the highest correlation with the radiolarian fauna. The significant influences of SSTw and SSSw suggested that the seasonal change of the North Equatorial Current–Kuroshio Current system exerted a crucial effect on the abundance and distribution pattern of the radiolarian fauna.

Variations of the North Equatorial Current Bifurcation and the SSH in the Western Pacific Associated With El Niño Flavors

AbstractThis study presents different variations of the North Equatorial Current Bifurcation (NECB) in the development of the canonical El Niño, the Central Pacific El Niño I (CP‐I El Niño), and the Central Pacific El Niño II (CP‐II El Niño) in autumn and investigates the dynamic mechanism by analyzing Simple Ocean Data Assimilation data sets. It is suggested that the meridional shifts of the NECB are negatively related to the sea surface height (SSH) near the coast of the Philippines. The NECB shifts northward in autumn of the development phase of both canonical and CP‐II El Niño events, whereas it moves insignificantly for CP‐I El Niño events. During the development phase of canonical and CP‐II El Niños, the remote positive wind stress curl anomalies in the central and western tropical Pacific between 12°N and 15°N are responsible for the variations of the NECB, which can induce the westward Rossby waves of negative SSH anomalies and thus result in the northward shift of the NECB several months later. However, the local wind stress curl anomalies near the Philippine coast are significantly negative and result in locally positive SSH anomalies for CP‐I El Niños. Such anomalous positive SSHs are offset by the negative counterparts that result from the remote wind forcing in the western tropical Pacific. Therefore, the meridional shifts of the NECB are not significant in autumn for CP‐I El Niños. A one and a half layer‐reduced gravity model is used to conduct experiments to further confirm the above results.

Seasonal variation of the North Equatorial Current bifurcation in regional model: Role of open boundary conditions

The role of open boundary conditions in modelling the seasonal variation of the North Equatorial Current Bifurcation latitude (NBL) is studied based on a linear Rossby wave model, 1.5-layer reduced-gravity model and Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). For a regional ocean model that covers the western Pacific, it is found that the seasonal variation of the NBL can be well reproduced as long as the data at the open boundary is provided by the corresponding basin experiment, no matter where the location is. However, the south–north migration of NBL as well as its peak seasons is not properly simulated if we apply other types of data at the open boundary as its location is close to the west. Sensitivity experiments indicate that the bad performance is attributed to the over-specification error and incomplete adjustment of interaction between wind forcing and westward propagating signals from incompatible open boundary data. The performance gets better as we set the open boundary at proper location and choose suitable open boundary condition. These conclusions can be extended to the simulations of low-latitude western boundary currents.

Impacts of global warming on larval and juvenile transport of Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica)

Variations in oceanic environmental conditions under global warming can significantly influence the larval and juvenile transport of Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica). This study used a Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate-based high-resolution forecasting experiment, under the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change A1B climate-warming scenario, to predict the northward movement of the North Equatorial Current (NEC) salinity front and bifurcation, the southward movement of the stronger NEC, and increases in the velocity of the Kuroshio Current (KC) under “future conditions” (2050–2099) relative to “present conditions” (1950–1999). Furthermore, particle modelling that simulated the transport of A. japonica larvae under three different swimming speeds after the start of metamorphosis (0 TL s−1, 0.69 TL s−1 and 2 TL s−1) predicted a 14–26% decline in particles recruited into the KC and a 7–12% increase in those entrained in the Mindanao Current. The drifting time from the spawning area to the KC was extended by approximately 35 days, which prolonged the time that A. japonica larvae spent in the pelagic environment of the open ocean and thus potentially affected the drifting time and recruitment success of this species. Moreover, under future conditions, the distribution of particles changes after they enter the KC.

Poleward Shift of the Pacific North Equatorial Current Bifurcation

AbstractThe dynamics of the poleward shift of the Pacific North Equatorial Current bifurcation latitude (NBL) is studied using a 5.5‐layer reduced gravity model. It is found that the poleward shift of the NBL is associated with the asymmetric intensity of the wind stress curl input to the Pacific tropical and subtropical gyres. Stronger wind stress curl in the subtropical gyre leads to equatorward transport in the interior upper ocean across the boundary between the two gyres, causing a poleward transport compensation at the western boundary. In the lower layer ocean, in turn, there is poleward (equatorward) transport at the interior (western boundary) due to Sverdrup balance which requires zero transport at the gyre boundary where zonally integrated wind stress curl is zero. Therefore, the NBL exhibits a titling feature, with its position being more equatorward in the upper layer and more poleward in the lower layer. The equatorial currents bifurcations in other basins are also characterized by the poleward titling vertical structure. The wind stress curl over the subtropical gyre is generally stronger than that over the tropical gyre, resulting in the bifurcations shifting poleward with increasing depth.

Multidecadal Change of the Mindanao Current: Is There a Robust Trend?

AbstractTen ocean state estimate products are analyzed to quantify the multidecadal change of the Mindanao Current (MC). These data sets suggest multidecadal trends of the MC transport since 1961, 1980, and 1993 are weak (‐0.3 Sv, +0.7 Sv, and +2.1 Sv, respectively; 1 Sv ≡ 106 m3/s) and not robust with respect to the large spread of different data sets. The primary cause is the discrepancies in different wind data sets, and change of the North Equatorial Current's bifurcation latitude also acts to attenuate the MC change. The bifurcation latitude shifts southward (northward) under enhanced (weakened) northeasterly trade winds and feeds less (more) water to the MC. Experimental simulations of a reduced‐gravity model forced by reanalysis and model‐projected wind trends suggest an asymmetry of the MC's response to wind forcing. Anomalous westerly winds in the western Pacific can dramatically enhance the MC through spinning up the cyclonic local recirculation.

Impact of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation on the Pacific North Equatorial Current bifurcation

Variability in surface currents is mainly induced by the time-varying wind forcing. Recent studies have revealed robust pronounced changes in the atmospheric circulation over the Pacific came with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). However, the PDO is a climate index based on sea surface temperature (SST) variations, and may not be appropriately considered as a climate forcing. Here, we suggest the Atlantic SST variability is the ultimate forcing leading to changes in the atmospheric circulation and surface winds over the North Pacific. Anomalous warm North Atlantic and cold South Atlantic leads to weak Hadley cell in the Northern Hemisphere, resulting in a northward displacement of the ITCZ as well as a positive wind stress curl anomaly in the Pacific subtropical region, which would reduce the North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPSG). Associated with reduced sea surface height in the subtropics by the weakened NPSG, the North Equatorial Current (NEC) is weakened based on geostrophy. Changes in basin-scale winds further result in the southward migration of the tropical gyre and consequential downstream ocean circulation.

Effect of ENSO events on larval and juvenile duration and transport of Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica).

Spawning ground of Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) is located near the West Mariana Ridge seamount. The species travels through the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and then enters the Kuroshio Current (KC) on the migration toward East Asian growth habitats. Therefore, El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events serve as the potentially important drivers of interannual variability across the equatorial Pacific. Because the NEC bifurcation and salinity profiles are related to ENSO events, we investigated the influence of locations of the NEC bifurcation and salinity front on the success of larval entry to the KC by numerically modeling particle transport in ocean currents from 1972 to 2013 and possible effects on the size of glass eels at continental recruitment and, via otolithometry on the duration of larval migration. Circulation and hydrography used for particle tracking were obtained from the results of the Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC) high-resolution forecasting experiment. Our results demonstrated that during El Niño years, (1) the southward movement of the salinity front might cause the larvae to experience slower currents and (2) the northward movement of the NEC bifurcation might broaden the separation between their spawning ground and NEC bifurcation, thus prolonging the time needed for the larvae to enter the KC from their spawning ground, because of which the duration of entrainment in the water column and body size increase when eels reach estuarine waters. In addition, this might cause more water to flow into the Mindanao Current (MC), leading to a decline in the rate at which larvae get entrained into the KC.

Decadal variations of the transport and bifurcation of the Pacific North Equatorial Current

Decadal variations of the transport and bifurcation latitude of the North Equatorial Current (NEC) in the northwestern tropical Pacific Ocean over 1959–2011 are investigated using outputs of the Ocean Analysis/Reanalysis System 3 prepared by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The results indicate that the NEC transports at different longitudes have different decadal fluctuations, which are strongest around 139°E. The NEC bifurcation latitude (NBL) has its largest decadal variations around 150 m. Extremes of the decadal NEC transport and NBL before 1975 correspond to different circulation anomalies from those after 1975. The regression map against decadal NBL exhibits negative sea surface height (SSH) anomalies and a cyclonic gyre anomaly over the northwestern tropical Pacific Ocean, while that against the decadal NEC transport exhibits a dipole structure, with positive/negative SSH anomalies to the north/south of about 13°N. Furthermore, decadal variations of the NEC transport and NBL over the whole period have different correlations with Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability (TPDV). Generally, the decadal NEC transport shows higher correlations with PDO than with TPDV, while the NBL has higher correlations with TPDV than with PDO. The high correlation of decadal NEC transport with PDO mainly comes from that of its northern branch with PDO, while its southern branch shows higher correlation with TPDV.

Coral record of variability in the upstream Kuroshio Current during 1953–2004

AbstractThe Kuroshio Current (KC), one of the most important western boundary currents in the North Pacific Ocean, strongly affects regional hydroclimate in East Asia and upper ocean thermal structure. Limited by few on‐site observations, the responses of the KC to regional and remote climate forcings are still poorly understood. Here we use monthly coral δ18O data to reconstruct a KC transport record with annual to interannual resolution for the interval 1953–2004. The field site is located in southern Taiwan on the western flank of the upstream KC. Increased (reduced) KC transport would generate strong (weak) upwelling, resulting in relatively high (low) local coral δ18O. The upstream KC transport and downstream transport, off Tatsukushi Bay, Japan, covary on interannual and decadal time scales. This suggests common forcings, such as meridional drift of the North Equatorial Current bifurcation, or zonal climatic oscillations in the Pacific. The intensities of KC transport off southeastern and northeastern Taiwan are in phase before 1990 and antiphase after 1990. This difference may be due to a poleward shift of the subtropical western boundary current as a response to global warming.

Projected changes of the low‐latitude north‐western Pacific wind‐driven circulation under global warming

AbstractBased on the outputs of 25 models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5, the projected changes of the wind‐driven circulation in the low‐latitude north‐western Pacific are evaluated. Results demonstrate that there will be a decrease in the mean transport of the North Equatorial Current (NEC), Mindanao Current, and Kuroshio Current in the east of the Philippines, accompanied by a northward shift of the NEC bifurcation Latitude (NBL) off the Philippine coast with over 30% increase in its seasonal south‐north migration amplitude. Numerical simulations using a 1.5‐layer nonlinear reduced‐gravity ocean model show that the projected changes of the upper ocean circulation are predominantly determined by the robust weakening of the north‐easterly trade winds and the associated wind stress curl under the El Niño‐like warming pattern. The changes in the wind forcing and intensified upper ocean stratification are found equally important in amplifying the seasonal migration of the NBL.
