NDVI estimation using Sentinel-1 data over wheat fields in a semiarid Mediterranean region

ABSTRACT Annual crop monitoring is a key parameter for managing agricultural strategies. Several studies have relied on remote sensing products such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as a vegetation dynamic metric. However, the dependence of optical data on weather conditions limits its availability. In this study, we reconstruct the NDVI time series of wheat fields using the moving averages of the Sentinel-1 normalized VH/VV cross-polarization ratio (IN) and the interferometric coherence in VV polarization over wheat selected fields in a semiarid site in Tunisia during two seasons, from 2018 to 2020. The crop cycle is divided into two periods: before and after the heading phase, which occurs in approximately the middle of March. Due to the volume-scattering impact, the second phase is divided into the ripening and maturation phase (NDVI ≥0.4) and senescence phase (NDVI <0.4). To estimate the NDVI values, different methods are used: curve-fitting equations and machine learning regressors such as the random forest (RF) and the support vector regressor (SVR). Low root mean square error (RMSE) values characterize NDVI estimation during the first period. In the second period, the RMSE values reach 0.06 when the NDVI is lower than 0.4. When the NDVI values exceed 0.4 in the second period, lower accuracy marks the NDVI estimation using the curve-fitting equations as a function of IN or coherence. Relative low accuracy characterizes the regression algorithms’ estimations when NDVI ≥ 0.4 compared to their performance during the aforementioned periods. The proposed approach was tested on different wheat fields. The NDVI estimations are characterized by RMSE values varying between 0.12 and 0.19. The use of RF and SVR outperformed the curve-fitting methods with an RMSE equal to 0.12. The present findings revealed the high accuracy of the proposed approach to estimate the missing values of wheat fields NDVI values during the vegetation development period until heading and the senescence phase. The presence of the mutual effect of the vegetation water content and its volume complicated the NDVI estimation using the C-band data.

Consumer-grade imaging system for NDVI measurement at plant scale by a farmer robot

The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a valuable indicator of plant vigor that is frequently used in agronomic practices to make timely and targeted decisions with the aim of increasing the productivity of the system. NDVI measurements of large-scale fields are typically performed using remote sensing from satellite and aerial imaging devices. However, due to their low spatial and temporal resolution, these technologies may have limitations in precision viticulture. This paper investigates the potential of a proximal sensing system to characterize the vine foliage that makes use of data collected by a farmer robot equipped with an Intel RealSense D435 camera. The camera includes two infrared (IR) sensors in stereoscopic configuration and one RGB sensor, which provide, for each observation, both infrared and visible red channel information, thus making possible pixel-per-pixel NDVI calculation. Solutions to IR filtering and radiometric calibration issues are proposed that significantly improve measurement accuracy and reliability. Since the camera also provides stereo-based 3D scene reconstruction, depth information can be used to separate the plant canopy from the background before NDVI measurement. At the same time, range data can be employed to extract geometric properties of the crop, such as plant height and/or volume. The system is validated in the field in a commercial vineyard at different phenological stages, from the formation of the berries to leaf discoloration and fall. Experimental results show good agreement compared with ground truth provided by a GreenSeeker, with a mean absolute percentage error in the NDVI estimation of 4.6% and a R2 of 0.87 tested over the whole grapevine cycle. Therefore, the proposed sensing system could be a feasible solution to automated NDVI estimation at plant-scale.

Crop NDVI time series construction by fusing Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and environmental data with an ensemble-based framework

Satellite-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series data are conducive for near-real-time (NRT) monitoring of crop progress, but they commonly suffer from data gaps due to cloudy weather conditions. Fortunately, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, which are cloud-insensitive, has high potentials to fill these data gaps. However, the relationship between NDVI and SAR data is not generic and affected by various factors (e.g., crop canopy structure and phenology, soil exposure and humidity). Therefore, it is worth exploring to evaluate the relationships and develop a more robust SAR-NDVI fusion method for NDVI time series construction. In this study, we proposed and evaluated an ensemble-based data fusion framework that accounts for these factors, based on which dense NDVI time series for crop monitoring were constructed. The framework consisted of three steps: (1) NDVI was predicted from Sentinel-1 SAR data and auxiliary environmental factors using a random forest (RF) model; (2) an improved feature importance measurement method was proposed to reveal the different contributions of multisource data to the modeling, and suggestions for selecting optimal input parameters were presented; (3) the uncertainty of the predicted data was quantified by an ensemble-based method and incorporated into a Weighted Least Squares (WLS) method to construct dense NDVI time series. Results showed that the RF models were generally improved by the auxiliary data and achieved a satisfactory accuracy of NDVI estimation (R2 > 0.93, RMSE < 0.075) for both corn and soybean crops in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. The proposed method performed well in filling data gaps in both the vegetative and reproductive stages for corn and soybean, providing a practical and promising solution for continuous crop monitoring.

Application of GIS using NDVI and LST estimation to measure climate variability-induced drought risk assessment in Ethiopia

Abstract The contribution of this paper is to assess the drought patterns using the Land Surface Temperature (LST) estimation index and examine the correlation between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The main objective was to evaluate the spatiotemporal variation in agricultural drought patterns and severity in order to estimate and measure climate variability. According to the study's findings, the region experienced mild to severe meteorological drought periods 15–18 times over the study period. The majority of these periods (62.72%) were classified as mild drought (unusual dry circumstances), which usually only showed a slight departure from the distribution of rainfall that is close to normal. According to the findings, cropping seasons from 2013 to 2022 saw an increase in agricultural dryness and a decrease in grain yield, with varying degrees of severity in different geographic locations. Based on the result, the major difficulties and challenges identified were the shortage of drinking water, and impacts on air quality, and food and nutrition. Accordingly, agricultural drought risk mapping can be utilized to mitigate the risk associated with drought on agricultural productivity and guide decision-making processes in drought monitoring.

Paper presents an analysis of eutrophication level of Baltic Sea based on the satellite images analysis. Methodologically, the analysis was based on level of the normalized difference vegetation index estimation. Studies was conducted in Gdansk Bay of the Baltic Sea in the Kaliningrad region, based on deposit data for the period from May to September, 2013-2021. It has been established that in the region under study there is a peak in the level of eutrophication in 2017-2019, with a gradual decline in 2019-2021, associated with the stagnation of production processes that introduce nutrients into the waters of the Baltic Sea. A general increased value of normalized difference vegetation index for the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea was noted in comparison with background level.

ESTIMATION OF NDVI FOR CLOUDY PIXELS USING MACHINE LEARNING

Abstract. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a useful index for vegetation monitoring. However, due to cloud cover the observations of NDVI are discrete and vary in the intensity. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the NDVI during cloud cover using alternative sources of satellite observations. The main objective of this study is to estimate NDVI during cloudy conditions using moderate resolution multi-spectral and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations. Two approaches were identified: 1) pixel replacement and 2) machine learning based regression analysis to estimate cloud free NDVI. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 8-day NDVI composite, Sentinel-1 SAR and cloud masked Sentinel-2 multi-spectral observations were collected for entire cropping season. The satellite observations were selected only for agricultural areas by applying the agriculture, non-agriculture land use land cover mask. Machine learning algorithms such as Linear Regression (LR), Random Forest Regression (RFR), and Support Vector Regression (SVR) were used for NDVI estimation. Regression analysis was performed using Sentinel-2 NDVI as an independent variable and VV, VH, Cross Ratio (i.e., VV/VH), and MODIS NDVI as dependent variables. NDVI of the cloudy pixel was estimated using the trained regression models over the agriculture areas. A regression model was trained and applied to each Sentinel-2 tile that covers an area of 100 km × 100 km. The RFR and SVR showed the highest R2 of 0.73 and a RMSE of 0.12. A visual comparison of time series graphs showed good alignment between actual (Sentinel-2) and predicted NDVI and usual crop growth trend.

Temporal Variations of NDVI and LAI and Interactions With Hydroclimatic Variables in a Large and Agro‐Ecologically Diverse Region

AbstractSatellite based vegetation indices are increasingly used to characterize vegetation's response to climate variability and change over large spatial extents. The use of a given index assumes that the index adequately describes the vegetation's response to hydroclimatic forcing. The objective of this study is to compare the temporal behaviors of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and leaf area index (LAI) and their associations with hydroclimatic variables. Observations of monthly precipitation, streamflow, temperature, vapor pressure deficit, evapotranspiration, and total water storage anomalies (TWSA) are processed for the combined Sacramento River and San Joaquin River basins in California for 13 water years (October 2002 to September 2015). Estimates of NDVI and LAI are obtained for the same period from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The seasonal cycle of NDVI peaks 2–3 months earlier than LAI. The seasonal variation in NDVI follows the seasonality of TWSA (i.e., water availability) whereas the seasonal cycle of LAI follows the seasonality in mean temperature and vapor pressure deficit (i.e., atmospheric water demand). Cross‐correlation analyses of NDVI and LAI with the hydroclimatic variables show that LAI is more strongly correlated with most of the hydroclimatic variables considered.

INVESTIGATING THE PERFORMANCE OF RANDOM FOREST AND SUPPORT VECTOR REGRESSION FOR ESTIMATION OF CLOUD-FREE NDVI USING SENTINEL-1 SAR DATA

Abstract. The current study focuses on the estimation of cloud-free Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations obtained from Sentinel-1 (A and B) sensor. South-West Summer Monsoon over the Indian sub-continent lasts for four months (mid-June to mid-October). During this time, optical remote sensing observations are affected by dense cloud cover. Therefore, there is a need for methodology to estimate state of vegetation during the cloud cover. The crops considered in this study are Paddy (Rice) from Punjab and Haryana, whereas Cotton, Turmeric, and Banana from Andhra Pradesh, India. We have considered, observations of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 sensors with the same overpass day and non-cloudy pixels for each crop. We used Google Earth Engine to extract surface reflectance for the Sentinel-2 and Ground Range Detected (GRD) backscatter for Sentinel-1. The Red and NIR bands of Sentinel 2 were used to estimate NDVI. Sentinel-1 based VV, and VH backscatter was used for estimation of Normalized Ratio Procedure between Bands (NRPB). Regression analysis was performed by using NDVI as an independent variable, and VV, VH, NRPB, and radar incidence angle as dependant variables. We evaluated the performance of Linear regression with tuned Support Vector Regression (SVR) as well as tuned Random Forest Regression (RFR) using the independent data. Results showed that the RFR produced the lowest RMSE for all the crops in the study. The average RMSE using the RFR was 0.08, 0.09, 0.11, and 0.10 for Rice, Cotton, Banana, and Turmeric, respectively. Similarly, we have obtained R2 values of 0.79, 0.76, 0.69, and 0.71 for the same crops using the RFR. A model with 80 trees produced the best results for Rice and Cotton, whereas the model with 90 trees produced the best results for Banana and Turmeric. Analysis with NDVI threshold of 0.25 showed improved R2 and RMSE. We found that for grown crop canopy, SAR based NDVI estimates are reasonably matching with the optical NDVI. A good agreement was observed between the actual and estimated NDVI using the tuned RFR model.

Precise Estimation of NDVI with a Simple NIR Sensitive RGB Camera and Machine Learning Methods for Corn Plants.

The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is widely used in remote sensing to monitor plant growth and chlorophyll levels. Usually, a multispectral camera (MSC) or hyperspectral camera (HSC) is required to obtain the near-infrared (NIR) and red bands for calculating NDVI. However, these cameras are expensive, heavy, difficult to geo-reference, and require professional training in imaging and data processing. On the other hand, the RGBN camera (NIR sensitive RGB camera, simply modified from standard RGB cameras by removing the NIR rejection filter) have also been explored to measure NDVI, but the results did not exactly match the NDVI from the MSC or HSC solutions. This study demonstrates an improved NDVI estimation method with an RGBN camera-based imaging system (Ncam) and machine learning algorithms. The Ncam consisted of an RGBN camera, a filter, and a microcontroller with a total cost of only $70 ~ 85. This new NDVI estimation solution was compared with a high-end hyperspectral camera in an experiment with corn plants under different nitrogen and water treatments. The results showed that the Ncam with two-band-pass filter achieved high performance (R2 = 0.96, RMSE = 0.0079) at estimating NDVI with the machine learning model. Additional tests showed that besides NDVI, this low-cost Ncam was also capable of predicting corn plant nitrogen contents precisely. Thus, Ncam is a potential option for MSC and HSC in plant phenotyping projects.

Evaluation of NDVI Estimation Considering Atmospheric and BRDF Correction through Himawari-8/AHI

Satellite-based vegetation indices are an essential element in understanding the Earth’s surface. In this study, we estimated the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) using Himawari-8/Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) data and analyzed the sensitivity of products to atmospheric and surface correction. We used the Second Simulation of a Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S) radiative transfer model for atmospheric correction, and kernel-based semi-empirical bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) model to remove surface anisotropic effects. From this, top-of-atmosphere, top-of-canopy, and normalized NDVIs were produced. A sensitivity analysis showed that the normalized NDVI had the lowest number of missing values compared with the others and almost no low peaks during the study period. These results were validated by Terra and Aqua/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Project for On-Board Autonomy/Vegetation (PROBA) NDVI product, showing the root mean square error (RMSE) and bias of 0.09 and + 0.04 (MODIS) and 0.09 and − 0.04 (PROBA), respectively. These results also satisfied the FP7 Geoland2/BioPar project-defined user requirements (threshold: 0.15; target: 0.10).

Effect of variety and growth period on NDVI estimation of nitrogen concentration in potato plants

The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is an important parameter to reflect relative chlorophyll content and nitrogen level of crops, but NDVI’s ability to estimate nitrogen nutrition is affected by varieties and growth period. The field experiments using several varieties were conducted in the main potato producing areas at the north foot of Yinshan mountain, Inner Mongolia. From early July to mid-august in 2014 to 2016, the canopy spectral index NDVI was measured by using the pocket active crop sensor GreenSeeker during potato critical growth period. The effects of cultivars and growth stages on NDVI estimation of nitrogen concentration in potato plants were compared. The linear correlation between NDVI and plant nitrogen concentration (PNC) was poor in tuber initiation, but increased in process of growth period. The combination of tuber bulking period and starch accumulation period significantly improved the linear modeling effect of NDVI and PNC. Variety combination reduced the sensitivity of NDVI and increased the discreteness of data, which could be offset by NDVI time series normalization (TNDVI), especially the fitting coefficient of determination ( R 2) of TNDVI and PNC increased from 0.13 to 0.47 in the tuber bulking period. The R 2 of linear estimation model of TNDVI for the combination of tuber initiation, tuber bulking and starch accumulation period was 0.76, which was significantly higher than that of NDVI. Plant-expanded varieties had a more linear fitting trend during tuber bulking and starch accumulation. The growth period and potato varieties had significant effects on NDVI estimation of PNC, and growth period had a greater effect. The established TNDVI spectral index overcame the data differentiation and saturation phenomenon during tuber bulking and starch accumulation caused by variety difference, which provides a theoretical basis and method for the application of NDVI in the diagnosis of nitrogen concentration in potato plants.

A Statistical Model for Estimating Midday NDVI from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) 16 and 17

The newest version of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite series (GOES-16 and GOES-17) includes a near infrared band that allows for the calculation of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) at a 1 km at nadir spatial resolution every five minutes throughout the continental United States and every ten minutes for much of the western hemisphere. The usefulness of individual NDVI observations is limited due to the noise that remains even after cloud masks and data quality flags are applied, as much of this noise is negatively biased due to scattering within the atmosphere. Fortunately, high temporal resolution NDVI allows for the identification of consistent diurnal patterns. Here, we present a novel statistical model that utilizes this pattern, by fitting double exponential curves to the diurnal NDVI data, to provide a daily estimate of NDVI over forests that is less sensitive to noise by accounting for both random observation errors and atmospheric scattering biases. We fit this statistical model to 350 days of observations for fifteen deciduous broadleaf sites in the United States and compared the method to several simpler potential methods. Of the days 60% had more than ten observations and were able to be modeled via our methodology. Of the modeled days 72% produced daily NDVI estimates with &lt;0.1 wide 95% confidence intervals. Of the modeled days 13% were able to provide a confident NDVI value even if there were less than five observations between 10:00–14:00. This methodology provides estimates for daily midday NDVI values with robust uncertainty estimates, even in the face of biased errors and missing midday observations.

Remotely sensed soil moisture to estimate savannah NDVI.

Satellite derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is a common data source for monitoring regional and global ecosystem properties. In dry lands it has contributed to estimation of inter-annual and seasonal vegetation dynamics and phenology. However, due to the spectral properties of NDVI it can be affected by clouds which can introduce missing data in the time series. Remotely sensed soil moisture has in contrast to NDVI the benefit of being unaffected by clouds due to the measurements being made in the microwave domain. There is therefore a potential in combining the remotely sensed NDVI with remotely sensed soil moisture to enhance the quality and estimate the missing data. We present a step towards the usage of remotely sensed soil moisture for estimation of savannah NDVI. This was done by evaluating the European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) soil moisture and three of its individual products with respect to their relative performance. The individual products are from the advance scatterometer (ASCAT), Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS), and the Land Parameter Retrieval Model-Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System (LPRM-AMSR-E). Each dataset was used to simulate NDVI, which was subsequently compared to remotely sensed NDVI from MODIS. Differences in their ability to estimate NDVI indicated that, on average, CCI soil moisture differs from its individual products by showing a higher average correlation with measured NDVI. Overall NDVI modelled from CCI soil moisture gave an average correlation of 0.81 to remotely sensed NDVI which indicates its potential to be used to estimate seasonal variations in savannah NDVI. Our result shows promise for further development in using CCI soil moisture to estimate NDVI. The modelled NDVI can potentially be used together with other remotely sensed vegetation datasets to enhance the phenological information that can be acquired, thereby, improving the estimates of savannah vegetation phenology.

Improving the Precision of NDVI Estimates in Upland Cotton Field Trials

Controlling for experimental error attributable to field heterogeneity is important in high‐throughput phenotyping studies that enable large numbers of genotypes to be evaluated across time and space. In the current study, we compared the efficacy of different experimental designs and spatial models in the analysis of canopy spectral reflectance data collected on upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Canopy spectral reflectance, as measured by normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), was measured at first bloom on three upland cotton performance trials conducted in Florence, SC, during 2014 and 2015. The relative efficiency and estimates of genotype effects were compared among randomized complete block, an α‐lattice incomplete block, row–column incomplete block, nearest neighbor adjusted, and spatially correlated error models. The row–column model provided the greatest improvement in the precision of genotype effect estimates compared with the randomized complete block model. Genotype rankings based on NDVI varied substantially between the randomized complete block and alternative models, particularly at 5 and 10% selection intensities. These results suggest that the use of more complex experimental designs and spatial analyses should be routinely considered to minimize experimental error due to field heterogeneity and improve the precision and reliability of traits measured using high‐throughput phenotyping systems. These findings also indicate that further research into the effects of field heterogeneity on the relationship between NDVI and lint yield in upland cotton is warranted.

Transitioning from MODIS to VIIRS: an analysis of inter-consistency of NDVI data sets for agricultural monitoring

ABSTRACTThe Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite was launched in 2011, in part to provide continuity with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Terra and Aqua remote-sensing satellites. The VIIRS will eventually replace Aqua MODIS for both land science and applications and add to the coarse-resolution, long-term data record. It is, therefore, important to provide the user community with an assessment of the consistency of equivalent products from the two sensors. For this study, we do this in the context of example agricultural monitoring applications. Surface reflectance that is routinely delivered within the M{O,Y}D09 and VNP09 series of products provides critical input for generating downstream products. Given the range of applications utilizing the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) generated from the M{O,Y}D09 and VNP09 products and the inherent differences between MODIS and VIIRS sensors in calibration, spatial sampling, and spectral bands, the main objective of this study is to quantify uncertainties associated with transitioning from using MODIS to VIIRS-based NDVIs. In particular, we compare NDVIs derived from two sets of Level 3 MYD09 and VNP09 products with various spatial-temporal characteristics, namely 8-day composites at 500 m spatial resolution and daily climate modelling grid images at 0.05° spatial resolution. Spectral adjustment of VIIRS I1 (red) and I2 (near infra-red – NIR) bands to match MODIS/Aqua b1 (red) and b2 (NIR) bands is performed to remove a bias between MODIS and VIIRS-based red, NIR, and NDVI estimates. Overall, red reflectance, NIR reflectance, and NDVI uncertainties were 0.014, 0.029, and 0.056, respectively, for the 500 m product and 0.013, 0.016, and 0.032 for the 0.05° product. The study shows that MODIS and VIIRS NDVI data can be used interchangeably for applications with an uncertainty of less than 0.02–0.05, depending on the scale of spatial aggregation, which is typically the uncertainty of the individual data sets.

Fusing MODIS with Landsat 8 data to downscale weekly normalized difference vegetation index estimates for central Great Basin rangelands, USA

Data fused from distinct but complementary satellite sensors mitigate tradeoffs that researchers make when selecting between spatial and temporal resolutions of remotely sensed data. We integrated data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor aboard the Terra satellite and the Operational Land Imager sensor aboard the Landsat 8 satellite into four regression-tree models and applied those data to a mapping application. This application produced downscaled maps that utilize the 30-m spatial resolution of Landsat in conjunction with daily acquisitions of MODIS normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) that are composited and temporally smoothed. We produced four weekly, atmospherically corrected, and nearly cloud-free, downscaled 30-m synthetic MODIS NDVI predictions (maps) built from these models. Model results were strong with R2 values ranging from 0.74 to 0.85. The correlation coefficients (r ≥ 0.89) were strong for all predictions when compared to corresponding original MODIS NDVI data. Downscaled products incorporated into independently developed sagebrush ecosystem models yielded mixed results. The visual quality of the downscaled 30-m synthetic MODIS NDVI predictions were remarkable when compared to the original 250-m MODIS NDVI. These 30-m maps improve knowledge of dynamic rangeland seasonal processes in the central Great Basin, United States, and provide land managers improved resource maps.

Assessing a Multi-Platform Data Fusion Technique in Capturing Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Heterogeneous Dryland Ecosystems in Topographically Complex Terrain

Water-limited ecosystems encompass approximately 40% of terrestrial land mass and play a critical role in modulating Earth’s climate and provisioning ecosystem services to humanity. Spaceborne remote sensing is a critical tool for characterizing ecohydrologic patterns and advancing the understanding of the interactions between atmospheric forcings and ecohydrologic responses. Fine to medium scale spatial and temporal resolutions are needed to capture the spatial heterogeneity and the temporally intermittent response of these ecosystems to environmental forcings. Techniques combining complementary remote sensing datasets have been developed, but the heterogeneous nature of these regions present significant challenges. Here we investigate the capacity of one such approach, the Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (STARFM) algorithm, to map Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) at 30 m spatial resolution and at a daily temporal resolution in an experimental watershed in southwest Idaho, USA. The Dry Creek Experimental Watershed captures an ecotone from a sagebrush steppe ecosystem to evergreen needle-leaf forests along an approximately 1000 m elevation gradient. We used STARFM to fuse NDVI retrievals from the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat during the course of a growing season (April to September). Specifically we input to STARFM a pair of Landsat NDVI retrievals bracketing a sequence of daily MODIS NDVI retrievals to yield daily estimates of NDVI at resolutions of 30 m. In a suite of data denial experiments we compared these STARFM predictions against corresponding Landsat NDVI retrievals and characterized errors in predicted NDVI. We investigated how errors vary as a function of vegetation functional type and topographic aspect. We find that errors in predicting NDVI were highest during green-up and senescence and lowest during the middle of the growing season. Absolute errors were generally greatest in tree-covered portions of the watershed and lowest in locations characterized by grasses/bare ground. On average, relative errors in predicted average NDVI were greatest in grass/bare ground regions, on south-facing aspects, and at the height of the growing season. We present several ramifications revealed in this study for the use of multi-sensor remote sensing data for the study of spatiotemporal ecohydrologic patterns in dryland ecosystems.

Late Leaf Spot Severity and Yield of New Peanut Breeding Lines and Cultivars Grown Without Fungicides.

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) cultivars with resistance or tolerance to Cercospora arachidicola and/or Cercosporidium personatum, the causes of early and late leaf spot, respectively, are needed for organic production in the southeastern U.S. To determine the potential of new breeding lines for use in such production systems, field experiments were conducted in Tifton, GA, in 2014 and 2015 in which nine breeding lines and two cultivars, Georgia-06G and Georgia-12Y, were grown without foliar fungicide applications. In one set of trials, cultivar Georgia-12Y and most of the breeding lines evaluated had early season vigor ratings, early-season canopy width measurements, final plant populations, and pod yield that were greater than those of standard cultivar Georgia-06G. In those trials, final late leaf spot Florida scale ratings were lower and canopy reflectance measured as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), was higher all the breeding lines than those of Georgia-06G. In another set of trials, two of those same breeding lines had final late leaf spot ratings similar to those of Georgia-12Y in 2014, whereas in 2015, six of those breeding lines had final leaf spot ratings that were lower than those of Georgia-12Y. Yields were similar for Georgia-12Y and all the breeding lines in the Gibbs Farm trials. Across years and breeding lines at the Lang Farm, the relationship between visual estimates of defoliation and NDVI was described by a two sector piecewise regression with NDVI decreasing more rapidly with increasing defoliation above approximately 89%. The utility of NDVI for spot comparisons among breeding lines appears to be limited to situations where there are differences in defoliation. Georgia-12Y and multiple breeding lines evaluated show potential for use in situations such as organic production where acceptable fungicides available for seed treatment and leaf spot control are limited.

A Modified Aerosol Free Vegetation Index Algorithm for Aerosol Optical Depth Retrieval Using GOSAT TANSO-CAI Data

In this paper, we introduced a new algorithm for retrieving aerosol optical depth (AOD) over land, from the Cloud and Aerosol Imager (CAI), which is one of the instruments on the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) for detecting and correcting cloud and aerosol interference. We used the GOSAT and AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) collocated data from different regions over the globe to analyze the relationship between the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance in the shortwave infrared (1.6 μm) band and the surface reflectance in the red (0.67 μm) band. Our results confirmed that the relationships between the surface reflectance at 0.67 μm and TOA reflectance at 1.6 μm are not constant for different surface conditions. Under low AOD conditions (AOD at 0.55 μm &lt; 0.1), a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) based regression function for estimating the surface reflectance of 0.67 μm band from the 1.6 μm band was summarized, and it achieved good performance, proving that the reflectance relations of the 0.67 μm and 1.6 μm bands are typically vegetation dependent. Since the NDVI itself is easily affected by aerosols, we combined the advantages of the Aerosol Free Vegetation Index (AFRI), which is aerosol resistant and highly correlated with regular NDVI, with our regression function, which can preserve the various correlations of 0.67 μm and 1.6 μm bands for different surface types, and developed a new surface reflectance and aerosol-free NDVI estimation algorithm, which we named the Modified AFRI1.6 algorithm. This algorithm was applied to AOD retrieval, and the validation results for our algorithm show that the retrieved AOD has a consistent relationship with AERONET measurements, with a correlation coefficient of 0.912, and approximately 67.7% of the AOD retrieved data were within the expected error range (± 0.1 ± 0.15AOD(AERONET)).

Influence of BRDF on NDVI and biomass estimations of Alaska Arctic tundra

Satellites provide the only practical source of data for estimating biomass of large and remote areas such as the Alaskan Arctic. Researchers have found that the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) correlates well with biomass sampled on the ground. However, errors in NDVI and biomass estimates due to bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) effects are not well reported in the literature. Sun-sensor-object geometries and sensor band-width affect the BRDF, and formulas relating NDVI to ground-sampled biomass vary between projects. We examined the effects of these different variables on five studies that estimated above-ground tundra biomass of two common arctic vegetation types that dominate the Alaska tundra, moist acidic tussock tundra (MAT) and moist non-acidic tundra (MNT). We found that biomass estimates were up to 33% (excluding extremes) more sensitive than NDVI to BRDF effects. Variation between the sensors resulted in differences in NDVI of under 3% over all viewing geometries, and wider bands were more stable in their biomass estimates than narrow bands. MAT was more sensitive than MNT to BRDF effects due to irregularities in surface reflectance created by the tussocks. Finally, we found that studies that sampled only a narrow range of biomass and NDVI produced equations that were more difficult to correct for BRDF effects.
