Pulmonary neuroepithelial bodies (NEB) are clusters of innervated NE cells scattered throughout the airway mucosa and are thought to function as hypoxia sensitive chemoreceptors (Lauweryns et al., 1977, Lauweryns and Cokelaere, 1973). NEB may play an important role during neonatal adaptation as well as in infant disease states including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Perrin et al., 1991). Because of their small number and diffuse distribution within the lung, NEB are difficult to study. A cell line derived from human lung small cell carcinoma (H69) exhibits many features of NE differentiation and hence may be a useful in vitro model for studies on pulmonary NE regulation at the cellular and molecular level.
