Lip AUs Detection by Boost-SVM and Gabor

Facial expression plays an important role in non-verbal social communication, emotion expression and affective recognition. To make the reorganization of facial expression more effectively, researchers try to recognize facial expression by the recognition of facial action units. In this paper, in order to identify lip AUs, we adopt Gabor wavelet transformation as the feature extraction method and Adaboost-SVM (combination of Adaboost and SVM) as the pattern classifier. Compared with the traditional non-cascaded Adboost algorithms in which the number of weak classifiers actually is fixed beforehand, a process of number optimization is added to ensure the minimum number of the weak classifies combination with the highest recognition rate. To test the effect of the given solution, 150 images from frontal faces for training and 100 images for prediction are collected. Compared with traditional SVM, the proposed system with Adaboost-SVM can not only improve the recognition accuracy from 79.0% to 83.0%, but also speed up AU classification process obviously.

Background As there are no biological markers for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), screening must focus on behaviour and the presence of a markedly abnormal development or a deficiency in verbal and non-verbal social interaction and communication. Objective To evaluate the psychometric attributes of a Spanish version of the autism domain of the Autism-Tics, AD/HD and other Comorbidities Inventory (A-TAC) scale for ASD screening. Material and methods A total of 140 subjects (43% male, 57% female) aged 6-16, with ASD (n = 15), Mental Retardation (n = 40), Psychiatric Illness (n = 22), Tics (n = 12) and controls (n = 51), were included for ASD screening. The predictive validity, acceptability, scale assumptions, internal consistency, and precision were analysed. Results The internal consistency was high (α = 0.93), and the standard error was adequate (1.13 [95% CI, -1.08 a 3.34]). The mean scores of the Autism module were higher in patients diagnosed with ASD and mental disability compared to the rest of the patients ( P < .001). The area under the curve was 0.96 for the ASD group. Conclusion The autism domain of the A-TAC scale seems to be a reliable, valid and precise tool for ASD screening in the Spanish school population.

Heritability of Individual Differences in Cortical Processing of Facial Affect

Facial expression of emotion is a key mechanism of non-verbal social communication in humans. Deficits in processing of facial emotion have been implicated in psychiatric disorders characterized by abnormal social behavior, such as autism and schizophrenia. Identification of genetically transmitted variability in the neural substrates of facial processing can elucidate the pathways mediating genetic influences on social behavior and provide useful endophenotypes for psychiatric genetic research. This study examined event-related brain potentials (ERPs) evoked by changes in facial expression in adolescent twins (age 12, 47 monozygotic and 51 dizygotic pairs). Facial images with happy, fearful, and neutral expressions were administered in a continuous mode, such that different expressions of the same face instantaneously replaced each other. This experimental design allowed us to isolate responses elicited by changes in emotional expression that were not confounded with responses elicited by image onset. Changes of emotional expression elicited a N240 wave with a right temporoparietal maximum and a P300 wave with a centropariatal midline maximum. Genetic analyses using a model fitting approach showed that a substantial proportion of the observed individual variation in these ERP responses can be attributed to genetic factors (36-64% for N250 and 42-62% for P300 components, respectively). This study provides the first evidence for heritability of neuroelectric indicators of face processing and suggests that ERP components sensitive to emotional expressions can potentially serve as endophenotypes for psychpathology characterized by abnormalities in social cognition and behavior.

Mirror Neuron System Differentially Activated by Facial Expressions and Social Hand Gestures: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study

Facial expressions and hand gestures are utilized in nonverbal communication to convey socially relevant information. One key process that mediates nonverbal communication is simulation. The mirror neuron system (MNS), which maps observed actions onto the motor representations used when producing those actions, likely plays a role in simulation. Previous neuroimaging experiments have identified a putative human MNS that includes the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and the frontal operculum. Although understanding nonverbal communication presumably involves the MNS, it is unknown whether these two forms of nonverbal social communication have distinct representations within that system. Here we report the results of a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment in which participants viewed, imitated, and produced facial expressions and social hand gestures. The observation and execution of facial expressions and social hand gestures activated the MNS, but the magnitude of response differed. Activation in the IPL was greater for social hand gestures, whereas activation in the frontal operculum was greater for viewing facial expressions. The locations of neural activity evoked by viewing facial expressions and social hand gestures in the frontal operculum were significantly different. These data argue that there are distinct representations of different types of social nonverbal communication in the MNS.

The Effects of Improvisational Music Therapy on Joint Attention Behaviors in Autistic Children: A Randomized Controlled Study

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of improvisational music therapy on joint attention behaviors in pre-school children with autism. It was a randomized controlled study employing a single subject comparison design in two different conditions, improvisational music therapy and play sessions with toys, and using standardized tools and DVD analysis of sessions to evaluate behavioral changes in children with autism. The overall results indicated that improvisational music therapy was more effective at facilitating joint attention behaviors and non-verbal social communication skills in children than play. Session analysis showed significantly more and lengthier events of eye contact and turn-taking in improvisational music therapy than play sessions. The implications of these findings are discussed further.

Linear Discrimination Analysis of Monkey Behavior in an Alternative Free Choice Task

When we observe people, we can often comprehend their intention from their behaviors. The intentions expressed by individuals can be considered as existing in interpersonal space and from a current social context. In our daily activity, choosing socially correct behavior through the observation of such social context is essential. However, it is not known how we can decode intention from another’s behavior. Here, we show how we can retrieve the intention of monkeys through external observation of their behavior patterns while performing alternative free choice tasks. We found that linear discriminant analysis on a monkey’s motion parameters could provide a discriminant score that appears to reflect the internal decision making process. The score showed a clear flexion point that we defined as a moment of outward expression of intention (OEI). This suggests that an alternative decision is made just before an OEI and that intention is expressed in the environment after this OEI in behavior, which in turn suggests that discriminant analysis may be useful in indicating how the brain implements nonverbal social communication. If we could embed the function in a human-machine interfaces, it could enable intuitive, smooth communication between machines and humans.

Temperamental and Joint Attentional Predictors of Language Development.

Individual differences in child temperament have been associated with individual differences in language development. Similarly, relationships have been reported between early nonverbal social communication (joint attention) and both temperament and language. The present study examined whether individual differences in joint attention might mediate temperament-language relationships. Temperament, language, and joint attention were assessed in 51 21-month-olds. Results indicated an inverse relationship between aspects of temperamental difficulty, including low executive control and high negative affect, and language development. Temperamental aspects of negative affect were also inversely predictive of joint attention. However, the utility of a model in which joint attention mediates the relationship between temperament and language during the second year was not supported.

The effect of a therapy dog on the communication skills of an adult with aphasia

Little evidence-based research has been published within the field of communication disorders on the role of dogs as catalysts for human communication. This single participant study, a point of entry into this realm of research, explores the effects of a therapy dog on the communication skills of a patient with aphasia receiving intensive speech and language therapy within a rehabilitation setting. The researchers conclude that the presence of the dog does have the potential to stimulate both overt social-verbal and social-nonverbal communication. Learning outcomes: As a result of this activity the reader will be able to (1) describe the beneficial role of dogs to serve as catalysts for human communication (2) describe ways in which a person with aphasia may be assisted by a therapy dog and (3) become familiar with an animal-assisted therapy (AAT) program set-up for patients with communication disorders within a rehabilitation setting.

Practitioner review: Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in 2- and 3-year-old children.

Progress has recently been made in the earlier identification of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Whilst being welcome, this progress to earlier referral and diagnosis presents new challenges to clinical practice, including the accuracy and stability of early diagnosis, the utility of standardised assessment instruments with young pre-schoolers and the ability to indicate prognosis. A selective review of recent research literature on the characteristic features of ASD in preschool children. Multidisciplinary diagnostic assessment should include detailed information on developmental history, parents' descriptions of the everyday behaviour and activities of the child, direct assessment of the child's social interaction style, including where possible with age peers, and formal assessment of communicative, intellectual and adaptive function. Clinical assessments need to concentrate on the identification of impairments in early non-verbal social communication behaviours that characterise children with ASD from the second year of life, including social orienting, joint attention, imitation, play and reciprocal affective behaviour. The particular pattern of symptoms that presents in a 2-year-old with ASD may differ from that seen at the more prototypic age of 4 or 5 years. In particular, overt repetitive and stereotyped behaviours may be less notable, although where these are seen alongside the social and communicative impairments they are highly indicative of ASD. The use of standardised assessment instruments and the strict application of the DSM and ICD diagnostic criteria need to be employed with caution, as an expert clinical view has been shown to be more accurate. An important aspect of early diagnostic consultation is an open and straightforward approach to the negotiation of the diagnostic view with parents over time. Earlier diagnosis and rising recognition of ASD have significant implications for primary healthcare and specialist diagnostic and therapeutic services.

Cerebrolysin therapy in Rett syndrome: clinical and EEG mapping study

Based on the suggestion that nerve growth factor plays a core role in the brain maturation process, which is altered in Rett syndrome, we investigate the influence of Cerebrolysin — the brain-derived peptidergic drug — on motor and higher cortical functions in Rett syndrome girls. The open pilot study was performed on nine Rett syndrome girls (aged from 2 years and 2 months to 7 years and 6 months) at stage 3 of the illness, and included both clinical and quantitative EEG evaluations before and after Cerebrolysin treatment. After Cerebrolysin treatment, increases in the behavioral activity, attention level, motor functions, and non-verbal social communication have been shown in Rett syndrome patients. EEG parameters after Cerebrolysin treatment also changed towards normal values, indicating an improvement of the brain functional state. EEG changes included: decrease of theta activity over all cortical regions, increase of beta activity in the frequency band 13–15 Hz, and some restoration of the occipital alpha rhythm (in the narrow 8–9 Hz band). The data obtained suggested possible perspectives of Cerebrolysin in complex therapy of Rett syndrome.

Joint attention and early social communication: implications for research on intervention with autism.

Highly structured, intensive early intervention may lead to significant developmental gains for many children with autism. However, a clear understanding of early intervention effects may currently be hampered by a lack of precision in outcome measurement. To improve the precision and sensitivity of outcome assessment it may be useful to integrate research on the nature of the social disturbance of autism with research on early intervention. In this regard, it may be that measures of nonverbal social communication skills are especially important in the study of preschool intervention programs. This is because these measures appear to tap into a cardinal component of the early social disturbance of autism, and because these measures have been directly related to neurological, cognitive, and affective processes that may play a role in autism. The research and theory that support the potential utility of these types of measures for early intervention research are reviewed. Examples are provided to illustrate how these types of measures may assist in addressing current issues and hypotheses about early intervention with autism including the "recovery hypothesis," the "pivotal skill hypothesis," and the relative effectiveness of discrete trial versus incidental learning approaches to early intervention. A cybernetic model of autism is also briefly described in an effort to better understand one potential component of early psychoeducational treatment effects with children with autism.

Non-verbal communication skills of surgically treated children with infantile spasms.

The authors present preliminary findings on the effects of surgery on the development of early non-verbal social communication skills in eight children with intractable infantile spasms. After a mean follow-up of 15.2 months, there was no statistically significant change in the post-surgical non-verbal communication behavior of these children beyond the expected developmental change. Implications of these findings for the developmental impairment associated with infantile spasms are discussed.
