This research examined the facial expressions of the network television news anchorpersons during their coverage of the 1976 presidential election campaign. 7he possibility for systematic yet subtle nonverbal communication in the news was explored through a "nonverbal content analysis" in which we studied the facial expressions which accompanied the uttering of the candidates' names. Significant differences were found in the perceived positivity of the facial expressions of broadcasters as a function of the candidates. 7he results were seen to have important implications for the role of nonverbal communication in the transmission of affective information to TV viewers.
