To analyze speech perception in children with pre-lingual hearing loss with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder users of bilateral hearing aid. This is a descriptive and exploratory study carried out at the Research Center Audiological (HRAC/USP). The study included four children aged between 8 years and 3 months and 12 years and 2 months. Lists of monosyllabic words, two syllables, nonsense words and sentences, the Infant Toddler-Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS) and the Meaningful Use of Speech Scale (MUSS), hearing, and language categories were used. All lists were applied in acoustic booth, with speakers, in free field, in silence. The results showed an average 69.5% for the list of monosyllabic words, 87.75% for the list of two-syllable words, 89.92% for the list of nonsense syllables, and 92.5% for the list of sentences. The therapeutic process that includes the use of bilateral hearing aid was extremely satisfactory, since it allowed the maximum development of auditory skills.

Gossiping to music in sixteenth‐century France

Amid the wide range of programmatic and narrative songs that characterize the sixteenth‐century French chanson repertory, a significant subset deals with images of gossip. Some pieces offer juicy stories told by the narrative voice as if sharing gossip with listeners, while others stages episodes of overhearing, where listeners are imagined as eavesdropping on gossiping women. These pieces share several salient features, including their salacious subject matter, the gender and social status of the gossipers, and the prominent use of nonsense syllables, which act as non‐semantic carriers of sonorous imagery and function to represent animal noises as well as inarticulate cries and exclamations. Composers of gossip songs deploy musical conventions drawn from the arsenal of chanson techniques to comment on the nature of gossip as sound and as sense. This study explores songs of gossip at the borderline of literacy and orality, interrogating not only features of textual and musical construction but also considering the role of such pieces in performance, and asking what purposes were served by these representations of women, lower social groups, and illicit or excessive vocality in these pieces conceived for consumption by educated male elites.

The Effect of Lexical Content on Dichotic Speech Recognition in Older Adults.

Age-related auditory processing deficits have been shown to negatively affect speech recognition for older adult listeners. In contrast, older adults gain benefit from their ability to make use of semantic and lexical content of the speech signal (i.e., top-down processing), particularly in complex listening situations. Assessment of auditory processing abilities among aging adults should take into consideration semantic and lexical content of the speech signal. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of lexical and attentional factors on dichotic speech recognition performance characteristics for older adult listeners. A repeated measures design was used to examine differences in dichotic word recognition as a function of lexical and attentional factors. Thirty-five older adults (61-85 yr) with sensorineural hearing loss participated in this study. Dichotic speech recognition was evaluated using consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) word and nonsense CVC syllable stimuli administered in the free recall, directed recall right, and directed recall left response conditions. Dichotic speech recognition performance for nonsense CVC syllables was significantly poorer than performance for CVC words. Dichotic recognition performance varied across response condition for both stimulus types, which is consistent with previous studies on dichotic speech recognition. Inspection of individual results revealed that five listeners demonstrated an auditory-based left ear deficit for one or both stimulus types. Lexical content of stimulus materials affects performance characteristics for dichotic speech recognition tasks in the older adult population. The use of nonsense CVC syllable material may provide a way to assess dichotic speech recognition performance while potentially lessening the effects of lexical content on performance (i.e., measuring bottom-up auditory function both with and without top-down processing).

Design of Optimized Wavelet Packet Algorithm to Improve Perception of Sensorineural Hearing Impaired

A novel optimized wavelet packet algorithm is proposed to improve the perception of sensorineural hearing-impaired people. In this work, we have developed optimized wavelet packet along with, biorthogonal wavelet basis functions using MATLAB Code. Here, we have created eight bands based on auditory filters of quasi octave bandwidth. Evaluation was carried out by conducting listening tests on seven subjects with bilateral mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss. The speech material used for the listening test consisted of a set of fifteen nonsense syllables in VCV context. The test results show that the proposed algorithm improves the recognition score, speech quality and transmission of overall feature specifically over the unprocessed signal. The response time also reduces significantly.

Speech perception enhancement in elderly hearing aid users using an auditory training program for mobile devices.

The goal of the present study was to develop an auditory training program using a mobile device and to test its efficacy by applying it to older adults suffering from moderate-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss. Among the 20 elderly hearing-impaired listeners who participated, 10 were randomly assigned to a training group (TG) and 10 were assigned to a non-training group (NTG) as a control. As a baseline, all participants were measured by vowel, consonant and sentence tests. In the experiment, the TG had been trained for 4 weeks using a mobile program, which had four levels and consisted of 10 Korean nonsense syllables, with each level completed in 1 week. In contrast, traditional auditory training had been provided for the NTG during the same period. To evaluate whether a training effect was achieved, the two groups also carried out the same tests as the baseline after completing the experiment. The results showed that performance on the consonant and sentence tests in the TG was significantly increased compared with that of the NTG. Also, improved scores of speech perception were retained at 2 weeks after the training was completed. However, vowel scores were not changed after the 4-week training in both the TG and the NTG. This result pattern suggests that a moderate amount of auditory training using the mobile device with cost-effective and minimal supervision is useful when it is used to improve the speech understanding of older adults with hearing loss. Frequency Importance Functions in Quiet and Noise for Adults With Cochlear Implants.

Several studies have been devoted to understanding the frequency information available to adult users of cochlear implants when listening in quiet. The objective of this study was to construct frequency importance functions for a group of adults with cochlear implants and a group of adults with normal hearing both in quiet and in a +10 dB signal-to-noise ratio. Two groups of adults, 1 with cochlear implants and 1 with normal hearing, were asked to identify nonsense syllables in quiet and in the presence of 6-talker babble while "holes" were systematically created in the speech spectrum. Frequency importance functions were constructed. Results showed that adults with normal hearing placed greater weight on bands 1, 3, and 4 than on bands 2, 5, and 6, whereas adults with cochlear implants placed equal weight on all bands. The frequency importance functions for each group did not differ between listening in quiet and listening in noise. Adults with cochlear implants assign perceptual weight toward different frequency bands, though the weight assignment does not differ between quiet and noisy conditions. Generalizing these results to the broader population of adults with implants is constrained by a small sample size.

Induction of a Generalized Transitivity Repertoire Via Multiple-Exemplar Training and Staged Testing

The emergence of transitivity-indicative performances occasioned by novel probes was observed following exposure to multiple-exemplar transitivity training and/or staged testing for transitivity. Twenty-four of 101 college students failed to demonstrate transitivity-indicative performances in an initial test that contained 6 stimulus sets drawn from 3 domains: glyphs, satellite images, and nonsense syllables, each of whom was assigned to 1 of 4 experimental conditions. Subjects in Condition 1 did not receive any intervention. Subjects in Condition 2 received transitivity training with 20 new glyph sets. Subjects in Condition 3 were reexposed to the stimuli from the initial test, but with one domain at a time (i.e., staged testing). Subjects in Condition 4 received both transitivity training and staged testing. Finally, all subjects were reexposed to the initial test (i.e., posttest). The number of subjects and the number of stimulus sets in the posttest that occasioned transitivity-indicative responding did not change for subjects in Condition 1, showed moderate increases for subjects in Conditions 2 and 3, and showed large increases for subjects in Condition 4. The improvements in Conditions 2 and 3, however, varied with stimulus domain. Improvements were minimal for the glyph stimuli, moderate for the satellite stimuli, and largest for the nonsense syllables. Thus, the emergence of a generalized transitivity repertoire was influenced by an interaction between transitivity training, test repetition, and the perceptual similarities of the stimuli used for testing.

Visual speech discrimination and identification of natural and synthetic consonant stimuli.

From phonetic features to connected discourse, every level of psycholinguistic structure including prosody can be perceived through viewing the talking face. Yet a longstanding notion in the literature is that visual speech perceptual categories comprise groups of phonemes (referred to as visemes), such as /p, b, m/ and /f, v/, whose internal structure is not informative to the visual speech perceiver. This conclusion has not to our knowledge been evaluated using a psychophysical discrimination paradigm. We hypothesized that perceivers can discriminate the phonemes within typical viseme groups, and that discrimination measured with d-prime (d’) and response latency is related to visual stimulus dissimilarities between consonant segments. In Experiment 1, participants performed speeded discrimination for pairs of consonant-vowel spoken nonsense syllables that were predicted to be same, near, or far in their perceptual distances, and that were presented as natural or synthesized video. Near pairs were within-viseme consonants. Natural within-viseme stimulus pairs were discriminated significantly above chance (except for /k/-/h/). Sensitivity (d’) increased and response times decreased with distance. Discrimination and identification were superior with natural stimuli, which comprised more phonetic information. We suggest that the notion of the viseme as a unitary perceptual category is incorrect. Experiment 2 probed the perceptual basis for visual speech discrimination by inverting the stimuli. Overall reductions in d’ with inverted stimuli but a persistent pattern of larger d’ for far than for near stimulus pairs are interpreted as evidence that visual speech is represented by both its motion and configural attributes. The methods and results of this investigation open up avenues for understanding the neural and perceptual bases for visual and audiovisual speech perception and for development of practical applications such as visual lipreading/speechreading speech synthesis.

The role of auditory feedback in speech and song.

When singing a melody or producing sentences, we take for granted the fact that the sounds we create (auditory feedback) match the intended consequences of our actions. The importance of these perception/action matches to production is illustrated by the detrimental effects of altered auditory feedback (AAF). Previous research in the domain of music has shown that when AAF leads to asynchronies between perception and action, timing of production is disrupted but accuracy of sequencing is not. On the other hand, AAF manipulations of pitch disrupt sequencing but not timing. Such dissociative effects, as well as other findings, suggest that sensitivity to AAF may be based on hierarchical organization of sequences. In the current research we examined whether similar effects are found for the production of speech, for which syllables rather than pitches may constitute content units. In the first experiment, participants either sang melodies or spoke sequences of nonsense syllables. In the second experiment, the tasks were combined such that participants sang syllable sequences. Production in both experiments was accompanied by either normal, asynchronous, or content altered auditory feedback. Across experiments, effects of AAF on the accuracy of sequencing were similar in speaking and singing tasks, and in all cases reflected the dissociative effects described earlier. For timing of production, however, previous results were only found when participants sang sequences that did not have varying syllabic content. These results suggest that sensitivity to timing exists at multiple hierarchical levels, particularly at the syllable and phonetic levels.

Telephone Usage and Cochlear Implant: Auditory Training Benefits.

Introduction Difficulties with telephone use by adult users of cochlear implants (CIs) are reported as a limitation in daily life. Studies to improve the speech understanding of CI users on the telephone are scarce in the Brazilian scientific literature. Objective To develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a training program of auditory abilities on the telephone for an adult CI user. Resumed Report The subject was a 55-year-old woman with a degree in accounting who used a CI for 24 months. The program consisted of three stages: pretraining evaluation, eight sessions of advanced auditory abilities training, and post-training evaluation. Auditory abilities with CI were evaluated before and after training in three conditions: sound field, telephone with the speech processor in the microphone function, and telephone with the speech processor in the telecoil function. Speech recognition was assessed by three different lists: one with monosyllabic and dissyllabic words, another with nonsense syllables, and another one with sentences. The Client Oriented Scale of Improvement (COSI) was used to assess whether the needs established by the CI user in everyday telephone use situations improved after training. The auditory abilities training resulted in a relevant improvement in the percentage of correct answers in speech tests both in the telephone use conditions and in the sound field condition. Conclusion The results obtained with the COSI inventory indicated a performance improvement in all situations presented at the beginning of the program.

Neural-scaled entropy predicts the effects of nonlinear frequency compression on speech perception

Signal processing schemes used in hearing aids, such as nonlinear frequency compression (NFC) recode speech information by moving high-frequency information to lower frequency regions. Perceptual studies have shown that depending on the dominant speech sound, compression occurs and the amount of compression can have a significant effect on perception. Very little is understood about how frequency-lowered information is encoded by the auditory periphery. We have developed a measure that is sensitive to information in the altered speech signal in an attempt to predict optimal hearing aid settings for individual hearing losses. The Neural-Scaled Entropy (NSE) model examines the effects of frequency-lowered speech at the level of the inner hair cell synapse of an auditory nerve model [Zilany et al. 2013, Assoc. Res. Otolaryngol.]. NSE quantifies the information available in speech by the degree to which the pattern of neural firing across frequency changes relative to its past history (entropy). Nonsense syllables with different NFC parameters were processed in noise. Results are compared with perceptual data across the NFC parameters as well as across different vowel-defining parameters, consonant features, and talker gender. NSE successfully captured the overall effects of varying NFC parameters across the different sound classes.

AUTOMATIC WRITING AND GRAMMELOT IN CLAUDE VIVIER'SLANGUE INVENTÉE

AbstractFrench-Canadian composer Claude Vivier (1948–1983) is one of the few composers, perhaps the only one, to use an invented language throughout his entire compositional career. Vivier's use of what he called hislangue inventée(‘invented language’) spanned the first vocal work in his catalogue –Ojikawa(1968) – to his final work,Glaubst du an die Unsterblichkeit der Seele(1983), completed only shortly before his murder in March 1983. Despite the pervasiveness of this technique – in fact, it is the only technique that remains a constant across all of Vivier's stylistic periods – relatively little attention has been given to thelangue inventéein scholarship. This article presents a description of Vivier'slangue inventéein three parts, beginning with a general introduction. The second part presents thelangue inventéeas a product of automatic writing and engages directly with Vivier's sketches to propose a method that Vivier likely used to write much of hislangue inventéetext. The final section of the article presents Vivier'slangue inventéeas a form of grammelot – a term revived by playwright, actor and director Dario Fo (1926–), which is associated with the dialect theatre of theCommedia dell'artetradition. This article aims to demonstrate that Vivier'slangue inventéeis not a just a string of unintelligible nonsense syllables, but rather a very purposeful grammelot, freely composed in a two-stage approach to automatic writing, that reaches beyond linguistic semantics.

Auditory Behavior in Everyday Life (ABEL) questionnaire in Hebrew and in Arabic and its association with clinical tests in cochlear-implanted children.

The aim of this study was to describe the results of the Auditory Behavior in Everyday Life (ABEL) questionnaire adapted to Hebrew and to Arabic and its association to clinical test results in children with cochlear implants. As assessment of hearing by audiometry does not always adequately reflect performance in daily life, questionnaires have been developed to assess functioning in natural surroundings and to track progress. In order to evaluate cochlear-implanted children's verbal and communicative abilities, the parental ABEL questionnaire was developed in 2002. The advantages of the ABEL questionnaire are that it is intended for a wide age range, is quick to administer, and is filled out by parents themselves. The ABEL questionnaire was translated into Hebrew and into Arabic and routinely used in the clinic. A total of 61 questionnaires were thus filled out by parents of children with cochlear implants (ages 3.9-14.3 years) when they came for routine mapping. Retrospectively, data were analyzed and questionnaire results were compared with performance with the implant on several clinical tests: audiometric thresholds, discrimination (percentage) of vowel-consonant-vowel nonsense syllables, and results of speech perception tests with monosyllabic and bisyllabic words and with sentences in quiet and in noise. A correlation was found between the different sections of the questionnaire, and age at implantation had a significant effect on questionnaire scores. However, correlations between questionnaire score and clinical tests were found only for speech perception tests in noise and not in quiet or to audiogram and speech reception threshold. As has been reported previously, self-evaluation or parental evaluation does not always correlate with all measured results of hearing performance. However, the subjective information collected through questionnaires can be valuable for evaluation of progress, for counseling and rehabilitation training, as well as for mapping.

Phoneme recognition in vocoded maskers by normal-hearing and aided hearing-impaired listeners.

This study compared modulation benefit for phoneme recognition obtained by normal-hearing (NH) and aided hearing-impaired (HI) listeners. Consonant and vowel recognition scores were measured using nonsense syllables in the presence of a steady-state noise and four vocoded speech maskers. Vocoded maskers were generated by modulating the steady-state noise, in either one or six frequency channels, with the speech envelope extracted from the speech of either a single talker or a four-talker babble. Aided HI listeners obtained lower consonant recognition scores than NH listeners in all masker conditions. Vowel recognition scores for aided HI listeners were comparable to NH scores, except in the six-channel vocoded masker conditions where they were relatively lower. Analysis using the extended speech intelligibility index developed by Rhebergen, Versfeld, and Dreschler [(2006). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 120(6), 3988-3997] suggested that the signal-to-noise ratio deficit observed in aided HI listeners was largely due to uncompensated audibility loss. There was no significant difference between modulation masking release obtained by NH and aided HI listeners for both consonant and vowel recognition.

Discriminative functions and over-training as class-enhancing determinants of meaningful stimuli.

Likelihood of equivalence class formation (yield) was influenced by pre-class formation of simultaneous and successive discriminations, their mastery criteria, and overtraining of the successive discriminations. Each undergraduate in seven groups attempted to form two 3-node, 5-member equivalence classes (ABCDE). In the pictorial (PIC) group, meaningless nonsense syllables were used as the A, B, D, and E stimuli and meaningful pictures as the C stimuli. Nonsense syllables only were used in the other groups. The abstract (ABS) or 0-0-0 group involved no pre-class training. In the 84-0-0, 84-5-0 and 84-20-0 groups, simultaneous discriminations were trained among C stimuli to a mastery criterion of 84 trials, followed by successive discriminations trained to mastery criteria of 0, 5, and 20 trials, respectively. In the 84-20-0, 84-20-100, and 84-20-500 groups, simultaneous and successive discriminations were trained as noted, followed by overtraining with 0, 100, 500 successive-discrimination trials, respectively. The ABS group produced a 6% yield with the 84-0-0, 84-5-0, and 84-20-0 groups producing further modest increments. Overtraining produced a linear increase in yield, reaching 85% after 500 overtraining trials, a yield matching that produced by classes containing pictures as C stimuli (PIC). Thus, acquired discriminative functions and the overtraining of at least one function can account for class enhancement by meaningful stimuli.

Probing recursion.

The experimental probing of recursion in human performance is faced with non-trivial problems. Here, I analyse three case studies from the literature and argue that they tell us little about the underlying mental processes at play within each of these domains: (a) the question of whether experimental participants employ recursive rules in parsing artificial strings of nonsense syllables; (b) the role of self-embedded structures in reasoning and general cognition; and (c) the reputed connection between structural features of a given object and the corresponding, recursive rules needed to represent/generate it. I then outline what a recursive process would actually look like and how one could go about probing its presence in human behaviour, concluding, however, that recursive processes in performance are very unlikely, at least as far as fast, mandatory, and automatic modular processes are concerned.

An electrophysiological investigation of discourse coherence in healthy adults

This study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate discourse-coherence processing. Because there are scant data on ERP indices of discourse coherence in typical adults, it is important to study a non-clinical population before examining clinical populations. Twelve adults listened to a story with sentences in a coherent versus incoherent order. Sequences of nonsense syllables served as a control. ERPs in the 200–400 ms time window, reflecting phonological and lexical processing, and in the 600–900 ms time window, reflecting later discourse processing for integration, were investigated. Results revealed a right anterior and posterior positivity that was greater for coherent than for incoherent discourse during the 600–900 ms time window. These findings point to an index of discourse coherence and further suggest that ERPs can be used as a clinical tool to study discourse-processing disorders in populations with brain damage, such as aphasia and traumatic brain injury.

Working Memory and Facial Expression Recognition in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease

Facial expression recognition impairment has been reported in Parkinson's disease. While some authors have referred to specific emotional disabilities, others view them as secondary to executive deficits frequently described in the disease, such as working memory. The present study aims to analyze the relationship between working memory and facial expression recognition abilities in Parkinson's disease. We observed 50 patients with Parkinson's disease and 49 healthy controls by means of an n-back procedure with four types of stimuli: emotional facial expressions, gender, spatial locations, and non-sense syllables. Other executive and visuospatial neuropsychological tests were also administered. Results showed that Parkinson's disease patients with high levels of disability performed worse than healthy individuals on the emotional facial expression and spatial location tasks. Moreover, spatial location task performance was correlated with executive neuropsychological scores, but emotional facial expression was not. Thus, working memory seems to be altered in Parkinson's disease, particularly in tasks that involve the appreciation of spatial relationships in stimuli. Additionally, non-executive, facial emotional recognition difficulty seems to be present and related to disease progression.
