Nonrelativistic Nuclear Reaction Kinematic Crossover Angles

A nonrelativistic expression relating the bombarding energy to the laboratory angle at which the energies of reaction products from two dissimilar nuclear reactions coincide is derived and discussed. Applications to accelerator beam energy measurement, detector angular calibration, and nuclear reaction experiment planning are considered.

Matrix elements of the forbidden β transitions for deformed atomic nuclei

Expressions for the reduced matrix elements corresponding to the first forbidden β transitions have been derived, assuming V-A type interactions and using the Nilsson single-particle model. For the relativistic operators non-relativistic expressions have been used. Detailed study is made of the first forbidden β transition in the decay scheme 1(β)2(γ)0. In the case of Re 186 it has been found, in agreement with the experiment, that the ξ approximation is not valid, as a result of the cancellation effect. In the case of Tm 170 one obtains vanishing values for the Kotani nuclear parameters.

Electromagnetic induction

Summary Existing rules for calculating induced e.m.f. are examined and a nonrelativistic expression is developed for the force on a charged particle moving in the vicinity of a time-varying but stationary source of magnetic field. This expression is used to predict the e.m.f. induced in three basic electromagnetic devices. The controversial experiment in which a long cylindrical permanent magnet is rotated about its axis of symmetry is discussed, together with a new experiment of this type which suggests that, although the field may be regarded as rotating, this does not, in itself, provide any indication as to the location of the seat of the e.m.f. in closed circuits.
