Exploring online infaq intentions of young Muslim

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the intention of the young Muslim generation in paying infaq using online platforms. Methodology – The respondents in this study were 320 young Muslims who had previously made infaq payments through online platforms. The research framework applied was an extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model to predict the intention to use new technology. Structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques to assess the validity, reliability, and relationships between various latent variables.Findings – The results of the data analysis show that performance expectations, social influence, infaq literacy, and habits have a significant influence on the intention to pay infaq through online platforms. In addition, habits and intention to pay donations online also influence usage behavior in paying donations via online platforms. Implications – Based on these findings, it is recommended that the Amil Zakat Infaq and Sedekah Agency (BAZNAS) collaborate with profit-oriented and non-profit social organizations in Indonesia. This collaboration is expected to improve online infaq services and expand the reach of community participation, in line with the increasing intention in and habit of using online platforms to pay infaq.Originality – This study uniquely focuses on the young Muslim generation's behavior in using online platforms for infaq, an area not extensively explored in previous research. By employing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), it offers a comprehensive analysis of both direct and indirect effects, providing actionable insights for enhancing online donation platforms.

Power Relationships in China's internet Governance

AbstractThe increasing decision‐making power over the Internet by private companies and civil society organizations has constituted a new locus of authority. How has the state related to and engaged with these new private and social actors in Internet governance? And how is power distributed in the engagement between social, private and state actors? This paper explores the roles of private actors and social organizations in internet governance in China, and the patterns and degrees of the power inequality between actors and how autonomous social organizations act in presence of state interference. It applies a network‐governance approach in its analysis, from an analytical perspective, demonstrating power relations between actors. The research is based on the case study of the nonprofit social organization: Beijing Internet Association. The research finds that there is simultaneously increasingly pluralistic societal participation in policy making, as well as the use of indirect tools. The research findings make important contributions to the literature of the power analysis of Internet governance as well as deepening our understanding of the evolving pattern of China's internet governance model and the growing roles of private and social actors.This article is protected by copyright. Factors associated with the depression status of Chinese parents who have lost their only child.

AimThis study aimed to assess the risk factors for depression among parents who have lost their only child (PLOCs).MethodsWe used a cross-sectional survey to reveal the risk factors of depression among PLOCs. Multi-stage, stratified, cluster sampling was used to recruit the participants. The cluster sampling method was used to select PLOCs in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and Wuhu, Anhui Province, while the stratified cluster sampling method was used in Anshun, Guizhou Province. A total of 651 PLOCs were recruited in this study. Participants completed the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) and the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15). Socio-demographics were also collected, including age, sex, monthly income, education level, marital status, self-reported health, and a number of diseases were collected as well. Chi-square tests and binary logistic regression were conducted to analyze the influence of these factors on PLOCs' mental status.ResultsTwo hundred and fifty-eight PLOCs (39.56%) reported depression. Compared to PLOCs living in Wuhu, those living in Hangzhou (OR = 3.374, CI = 2.337–4.870) had a higher risk of depression. Being single (OR = 1.449, CI = 1.019–2.061) and the presence/absence of grandchildren (OR = 0.430, CI = 0.274–0.676)were significantly associated with the depression status of PLOCs.ConclusionThe sampled Chinese PLOCs reported a high prevalence of depression that was influenced by their place of residence, marital status, and presence/absence of grandchildren. This may highlight the need for routine assessment and help of this group by the relevant stakeholders (including government, non-profit social organizations, and professional psychologists) with more attention paid to single and low-income PLOCs that have no grandchildren. It is imperative to build a comprehensive care system of “extended family—community—society—government” for this vulnerable group.

Government Consulting Program to Encourage Knowledge Sharing between Nonprofit Social Service Agencies in South Korea

Nonprofit social service agencies in South Korea have dramatically improved their service quality in the last few decades. However, with increasing competition among nonprofit social service agencies, quality differences among nonprofits have remained unresolved and in many cases increased. The Korean government has implemented the Quality Management Program to decrease disparities among nonprofit social service agencies. This study explores the impact the consulting program has on high and low performing agencies and provides insight into knowledge sharing. This exploratory qualitative study is comprised of semi-structured interviews with 18 leaders from high and 4 leaders from low-performing nonprofit social service. The results showed that the program fosters mutual growth between high and low-performing agencies and improves the evaluation results of the low-performing agencies. Leaders of low performing agencies indicated that consulting was helpful but participating in the mandatary program was shameful. Structural barriers at the low performing agencies, limited time-frames, and non-voluntary participation were found to be limitations in improving consulting outcomes. Addressing these limitations would facilitate the development of a voluntary knowledge sharing culture among nonprofit agencies. This article discusses the limitations and implications for future research and practice in developing knowledge in social work.

Assessing the Social Impact of Mental Health Service Accessibility by a Nonprofit Social Enterprise: A Mixed--methods Case Study

The following study sought to examine the social impact of a social enterprise mental health services model by assessing its impact on service accessibility and mental health stigma. A novel approach to case study – a mixed methods design was developed by collecting data from service users, counsellors, and community members of a social enterprise in Toronto, Ontario, using qualitative interviews and the Mental Health Knowledge Schedule (MAKS) survey. Findings show how the social enterprise increases service access and challenges mental health stigma by engaging in a variety of activities, including providing low--cost counselling, diversifying services, offering a positive and safe non--clinical environment, and engaging with the public directly by utilizing a storefront model. As a result of data triangulation analysis, common themes and discrepancies between respondent groups are identified and discussed. No significant relationships were found between mental health stigma and community member demographic characteristics. Insights on replication of this social impact assessment model are discussed.

How Funding of Non-profit Social Organizations Affects the Number of Volunteers

In recent decades, significant changes have occurred to how charities and non-profit organizations are funded. However, only limited research has considered how the new financial landscape affects the work being carried out by these organizations. This article presents a quantitative analysis of the relationship between financing and the number of volunteers. The data material consists of panel data on revenue streams to nationwide, social, non-profit organizations in Denmark. The analysis reveals a strong, positive relationship between both value-driven general revenues and the organizations’ equity in relation to the number of volunteers. Conversely, targeted and means-driven investments do not have any significant correlation with the number of volunteers. Overall, the findings point to the fact that more volunteers can be attracted through forms of financing that strengthen the stability and organizational capacity of an organization as well as its ability to independently organize the work to be done.

Investigating the determinants of online infaq intention during the COVID-19 pandemic: an insight from Indonesia

PurposeThis study aims to investigate Muslims’ online infaq intention during COVID-19 deadly outbreak. This study examined the model comprising two major theories, namely, the theory of reasoned action (TRA) with additional Muslim intrinsic religiosity and social presence theory (SPT).Design/methodology/approachA structural equation modeling (SEM) approach is used to test the measurement and structural model. In the structural model, SEM is chosen due to its effectivity in estimating direct and indirect effects in a single model. An online questionnaire is distributed to respondents who are purposively selected all over Indonesia regions comprising all major islands. In total, there are 571 respondents collected; however, only 560 of them are usable.FindingsThis study shows that all hypotheses generated from the TRA and SPT significantly affect online infaq intention. Surprisingly, Muslim intrinsic religiosity does not affect both attitude toward online infaq and online infaq intention. To further explain the result, a post hoc analysis is conducted. Accordingly, it is found that Muslim intrinsic religiosity has an indirect significant effect on online infaq intention through social presence.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has several limitations. First, even though the sample already represented all parts of Indonesia, the sample is distributed mainly to those live in Java Island. Second, due to its difficulty in pursuing proportional distribution of the sample, the results are more subjective to more dominant respondent demographics. Third, this study captures cross-sectioned phenomena of an online infaq intention during COVID-19 pandemic. Fourth, as the topic of this study is concerned about Islamic charity, the Qur’an- and sunnah-based research framework will make this study more valuable. However, such a framework has not been widely developed.Practical implicationsThis study provides a managerial implication for online infaq fundraisers in Indonesia, in which trustworthiness and “social touch” are important to drive the Muslims in making a monetary donation. The online infaq can be an efficient Islamic philanthropic tool to solve social problems during the COVID-19 outbreak. Therefore, the central authority should encourage profit and non-profit social organizations in Indonesia to make a strategic collaboration in providing online infaq service and its distribution. Collaboration may increase perceived trust and social presence.Originality/valueDue to a limited study on the topic of online infaq behavioral intention during COVID-19 situation, therefore, this study provides added value to the literature by examining factors determining online infaq intention during COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. This study combines the extended TRA and SPT in a single model.

The Perception of Leaders Regarding Networking among Nonprofit Social Service Agencies: Focusing on Competitive Environments in South Korea

With a growing number of nonprofit social service agencies in South Korea, leaders are required to networking among agencies to provide quality services. On the other hand, increasing competitive environments negatively impact building relationships. Leaders of nonprofit social service agencies have an initiative to network; however, there is little research on understanding these leaders’ experiences of networking. This study explores the perception of leaders regarding networking among nonprofit social service agencies. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 social workers who are in a leadership position at nonprofit social service agencies. Results revealed that most leaders were aware of the importance of networking and were involved in networking activities, however, they perceived the quality of networking as low and superficial. In addition, the findings indicated that within competitive environments, leaders' lack of awareness of the importance of networking and lack of incorporation of networking prevent its facilitation. Implications for practice and for future research in strong networking are suggested.

The Scarring Effect of the 2008 Economic Crisis: Growth and Growth Decline in Austria\u2019s Nonprofit Social Services Sector

Since the 2008 economic crisis, social service providers worldwide have reported funding cuts, while the need for some social services has been increasing. This paper examines the combined and longer-term effects of such divergent developments on the nonprofit social services sector. The empirical analysis uses Austrian administrative data on six subfields of the sector covering the years 2003–2017. We investigate significant changes in the trends of four growth indicators applying interrupted time series analysis. We find that the 2008 economic crisis is associated with persistently lower growth rates in Austria’s nonprofit social services sector. The magnitude of this dampening effect differs across subsectors. Additionally, our findings suggest an increase in market concentration. Hence, the study discloses a long-term scarring effect of the economic crisis on Austria’s social services sector, raising doubts on the sector’s future resilience.

Considering the Allure and Peril of Nonprofit Social Impact Bond Arrangements

This essay considers Social Impact Bonds not from the point of view of the Investor, or the Government, or the Service Population, but from the vantage point of nonprofit organization officers and directors who contemplate a SIB venture. From this perspective, not all the foreseeable perils have been fleshed out in the academic literature or elsewhere—although perhaps they are fleshed out in the fine print of disclosure statements contained in private agreements among the parties that usually are read closely by lawyers for their nonprofit clients. Still, important elements of these agreements are not salient or even publicly available. What financial, litigation and reputational risks should be faced by a nonprofit organization that is considering entrance into a SIBS agreement? What does the embrace of SIBS say about the larger privatization of social contract? These and related questions are addressed in a presentation that was made to nonprofit law specialists in 2014 at the Annual Conference of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Associations.

Nonprofit Social Capital as an Indicator of a Healthy Nonprofit Sector

AbstractNonprofit social capital refers to the trust, norms, and networks that can improve organizational performance to fulfill a mission. Research on social capital within organizations, and specifically with nonprofits, is relatively widespread; however, the notion that we can quantify, measure, and incentivize its growth across a sector is novel. Nonprofits actively work to solve some of society’s most complex challenges in diverse areas, such as public health, education, social inequality, and environment. Few would argue against the need for a robust and healthy nonprofit sector. Yet, there is little debate and even less agreement on the definition of “a healthy nonprofit sector” or how to measure it. We offer a policy brief on this topic in the form of an exploratory think piece, rather than a definitive empirical methodology or research paper, that connects nonprofit social capital to a framework of sector health. Solving many of the challenges facing society today will require trust, working together, and networks of resources and reciprocity. Because of this, nonprofit social capital – both cognitive and structural – is an important benchmark of nonprofit sector health and could supplement other metrics of an index offering a signal as to changes occurring in the sector.

ESTIMATION OF NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS’ STATE AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON DEVELOPMENT OF THE RUSSIAN ECONOMY

In this article the state of the noncommercial sector of the Russian Federation and its influence on the development of economy are evaluated on the basis of Federal statistical data. The author reveals tendencies of social non-profit organizations development during the period from 2012 to 2017. Extensive type of the sector development is demonstrated. Revealed features of the sector of socially-oriented non-profit organizations result from the small size of organizations as well as from increasing competition for financial resources and social orientation of their activity. On the basis of indicators of national account system, it is concluded that the level of non-profit sector influence on the development of economy in the medium-term period is low due to the underestimation of economic contribution of volunteering and the results of activity of non-market non-profit organizations. Data limitations of the Russian statistical accounting of noncommercial organizations activity are discussed.

The state of China’s collective rights management in the context of the United States and Japan

With the rapid expansion of China’s economy, China’s music industries have shown rapid growth, and new companies have entered the marketplace. As these companies have had little pre-existing experience with the music industry—not to mention that music industry is a relatively new concept in China—the expansion has been not only rapid but also disordered and chaotic. One component of a mature music industry are collective rights management or performing rights organizations, which are independent non-profit social organizations that collect license fees on behalf of copyright holders (songwriters, composers, music publishers) and distribute these fees as royalties to members whose works have been performed. In this “In Focus” report, we compare and contrast the state of collective rights management in China, the United States, and Japan. Recognizing that China’s representative, the Music Copyright Society of China, is new to the scene, we should not be terribly surprised that it is lagging behind the other countries. Herein, we cite various areas where improvement is necessary so that China’s collective rights management can be in part with its international peers.

Fundraising Efficacy and the South African Nonprofit Social Services Sector

This study analyzed fundraising efficiencies within the South African nonprofit social services sector. Employing an electronic questionnaire, this quantitative study used a national database of social service organizations as its sample. A secondary data analysis of the organizations’ audited annual financial statements was conducted. Fundraising-related financial data was in most cases inaccurate which limited amore extensive interrogation of fundraising indicators. The findings revealed inadequate fundraising management with limited or no fundraising monitoring and evaluation procedures. Better informed fundraising leadership was needed to alleviate organizations’ reliance on state funding, which in itself was also found to be problematic.

Organizational Capacity of Nonprofit Social Service Agencies

The U.S. social safety net is formed by governmental and nonprofit organizations, which are trying to respond to record levels of need. This is especially true for local level organizations, such as food pantries. the organizational capacity literature has not covered frontline, local, mostly volunteer and low resource organizations in the same depth as larger ones. This analysis is a consideration of whether grassroots nonprofit organizations have the ability to be a strong component of the social safety net. Based on the literature on organizational capacity, a model is developed to examine how service delivery at the local level is affected by organizational capacity. Surprisingly, we find few of the characteristics previously identified as important are statistically significant in this study. Even when so, the material effect is negligible. Current organizational capacity research may apply to larger nonprofits, but not to the tens of thousands of small community nonprofits, a significant limitation to the research to date.

Social value and organizational performance in non-profit social organizations: Social entrepreneurship, leadership, and socioeconomic context effects

This paper analyzes the roles of social entrepreneurship and transformational leadership in explaining the social value and the organizational performance of non-profit social organizations. By evaluating the role of socioeconomic context as the moderating variable, the results confirm the strong influence of social entrepreneurship on social value and the effects of social entrepreneurship and transformational leadership on organizational performance. The socioeconomic context proves to be an important moderator of the hypothesized relations. In an unfavorable context, transformational leadership becomes relevant in explaining social value and organizational performance. However, in a favorable context, social entrepreneurship provides more significant support to social value and organizational performance, and social value itself also has an effect on organizational performance.
