A Comparative Study Between the PI and SM Controllers Used by Nonlinear Control of Induction Motor Fed by SVM Matrix Converter

This paper presents a nonlinear feedback control of the induction motor drive system fed by a matrix converter controlled by a direct space vector strategy. The nonlinear feedback control is an approach privileged, which allows achieving a decoupled control while ensuring a perfect linearization regardless of the profiles of the reference trajectories imposed. In this context, a sliding mode controller has been developed taking the place of the conventional PI controller, in order to improve the performance of the proposed drive system regarding decoupling, pursuit of imposed reference trajectories, and the fast dynamic responses. Moreover, to minimize the harmonic rate injected by the drive system into the grid, a damped RLC input filter was placed upstream with the matrix converter. Finally, a comparison study between the PI and SMC was carried out by simulation. The obtained results clearly indicate the effectiveness of the SMC over the PI controller at different operating conditions, such as load disturbance and speed reversal.

Nonlinear control of induction motors based on state error PCH and energy-shaping principle

A novel nonlinear control scheme of induction motor (IM) is presented based on state error port-controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) systems and energy-shaping (ES) principle. The PCH model of IM system is established. Using interconnection assignment and damping injection method, the desired state error PCH structure is assigned to the closed-loop IM system by the ES principle. The controllers are designed when the load torque is known and unknown, respectively. A load torque estimator is developed in the presence of the load torque disturbance. Moreover, an observer is proposed to estimate the unknown load torque. The stability of the closed-loop system is also verified. Finally, speed regulation of the IM drive system is implemented based on space vector pulse-width modulation technology. The simulation results show that the system has good load disturbance attenuation and speed tracking performances.

Adaptive nonlinear control of induction motor

This work addresses the problem of controlling a rigid arm (one degree of freedom robot manipulator) directly driven by an induction motor. A Lyapunov-based adaptive nonlinear controller is designed. The developed controller compensates for parametric uncertainty associated with the resistance of the rotor windings and it is capable to track asymptotically a trajectory for an angular position keeping all the internal signals bounded and guarantees the asymptotical stability of the system. Simulations are presented to illustrate the performance of this controller.

A Nonlinear State Feedback Controller for Induction Motors

In this article, a novel approach to nonlinear control of induction motors is presented. The proposed approach is used to design controllers for the rotor flux amplitude and the motor speed. The underlying design objective is to endow the closed loop system with high performance dynamics for high speed ranges while keeping the required stator voltage within the inverter ceiling limits. A comparative study between the performances of the proposed controller and field oriented control is carried out. The methods are compared in terms of their ability to handle loads on the motor shaft, their speed tracking capability and their sensitivity to operating condition variations. To estimate the rotor flux, an open loop observer is developed.

Artificial-Neural-Network-Based Sensorless Nonlinear Control of Induction Motors

In this paper, two architectures of artificial neural networks (ANNs) are developed and used to correct the performance of sensorless nonlinear control of induction motor systems. Feedforward multilayer perception, an Elman recurrent ANN, and a two-layer feedforward ANN is used in the control process. The method is based on the use of ANN to get an appropriate correction for improving the estimated speed. Simulation and experimental results were carried out for the proposed control system. An induction motor fed by voltage source inverter was used in the experimental system. A digital signal processor and field-programmable gate arrays were used to implement the control algorithm.

Comprehensive analysis and comparative study of several sensorless control systems of asynchronous motors

AbstractThe aim of this work is to present a novel and inexpensive method to develop and assess sensorless control schemes of induction motors. The proposed systems operate without speed and motor voltage sensors; the rotor angular speed is calculated in different ways. The stator voltage may be determined from measured DC link voltage with information of the pulse width modulation algorithm. A voltage source inverter feeds the induction motor with hysteresis current controllers using amplitude and angular frequency of the stator current as input commands. A comprehensive analysis and comparative study of several relationships of rotor angular speed is presented. The presented idea may be treated as an improvement on the principle of nonlinear control of induction motors. Simulation results have been performed using the proposed control systems. A set of criteria to assign “figures of merit” can be used to choose the proper scheme, depending on the specific application.

Nonlinear control of induction motors: torque tracking with unknown load disturbance

Ortega and Espinosa (1993) presented a globally stable controller for torque regulation of a complete induction motor model with partial state feedback, i.e., no assumption of flux measurement. The result was established under the assumptions that both the desired and load torques are constant, that the former does not exceed certain bounds which depend on the systems natural damping, and that the motor parameters are known. In the present contributions the authors extend these results in several directions. First, by "adding mechanical damping" to the closed-loop system the authors relax the upper bound condition on the desired torque. Second, the authors use a new controller structure that allows them to treat the case of time-varying desired torque. Abstract Principles of nonlinear control of an induction motor with field-oriented coordinate system are presented. A new multi-scalar model of the induction motor is introduced, to which nonlinear control system has been applied. The new control system is compared with the field-oriented system.
