Generation of ultrarelativistic vortex leptons with large orbital angular momenta

We put forward a novel method for generating ultrarelativistic vortex positrons and electrons with intrinsic orbital angular momenta (OAM) through nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (NBW) scattering of vortex γ photons. A complete angular momentum-resolved scattering theory has been formulated, introducing angular momenta of laser photons and vortex particles into the conventional NBW scattering framework. We find that vortex positron (electron) can be produced when the outgoing electron (positron) is generated along the collision axis. By unveiling the angular momentum transfer mechanism, we clarify that the OAM of the γ photon and the large angular momenta due to multiple laser photons are entirely transferred to the generated vortex leptons. Furthermore, the cone opening angle and superposition state of the vortex γ photon can be determined via the angular distribution of created pairs in NBW processes. Fermionic signal of vacuum polarization in strong laser fields

Vacuum polarization (VP) is investigated for the interaction of a polarized γ-ray beam of GeV photons with a counterpropagating ultraintense laser pulse. In a conventional setup of a vacuum birefringence measurement, a VP signal is the emerging small circular (linear) polarization of the initially linearly (circularly) polarized probe photons. The pair production via the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process in such a high-energy environment eliminates part of the γ photons in the outgoing γ beam, increasing the statistical error and decreasing the accuracy of this VP signal. In contrast, we investigate the conversion of the emerging circular polarization of γ photons into longitudinal polarization of the created positrons, considering the latter as the main VP signal. To study the VP effects in the highly nonlinear regime, where the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian method breaks down, we have developed a Monte Carlo simulation method, incorporating vacuum birefringence and dichroism via the one-loop QED probabilities in the locally constant field approximation. Our Monte Carlo method will enable the study of VP effects in strong fields of arbitrary configuration. With 10 PW laser systems, we demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the fermionic signal of the VP effect at the 5σ confidence level with a few hours of measurement time. Phase control of nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair creation

Electron-positron pair creation occurs throughout the universe in the environments of extreme astrophysical objects, such as pulsar magnetospheres and black hole accretion disks. The difficulty of emulating these environments in the laboratory has motivated the use of ultrahigh-intensity laser pulses for pair creation. Here we show that the phase offset between a laser pulse and its second harmonic can be used to control the relative transverse motion of electrons and positrons created in the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process. Analytic theory and particle-in-cell simulations of a head-on collision between a two-color laser pulse and electron beam predict that with an appropriate phase offset, the electrons will drift in one direction and the positrons in the other. The resulting current may provide a collective signature of nonlinear Breit-Wheeler, while the spatial separation resulting from the relative motion may facilitate isolation of positrons for subsequent applications or detection. Radiation-dominated injection of positrons generated by the nonlinear Breit–Wheeler process into a plasma channel

Plasma acceleration is considered a prospective technology for building a compact multi-TeV electron–positron collider in the future. The challenge of this endeavor is greater for positrons than for the electrons because usually the self-generated fields from laser–plasma interaction are not well-suited for positron focusing and on-axis guiding. In addition, an external positron source is required, while electrons are naturally available in the plasma. Here, we study electron–positron pair generation by an orthogonal collision of a multi-PW laser pulse and a GeV electron beam by the nonlinear Breit–Wheeler process. We studied conditions favorable for positron deflection in the direction of the laser pulse propagation, which favors injection into the plasma for further acceleration. We demonstrate using the OSIRIS particle-in-cell framework that the radiation reaction triggered by ultra-high laser intensity plays a crucial role in the positron injection. It provides a suppression of the initial transverse momentum gained by the positrons from the Breit-Wheeler process. For the parameters used in this work, the intensity of at least 2.2×1023 W/cm2 is needed in order to inject more than 1% of positrons created. Above this threshold, the percentage of injected positrons rapidly increases with intensity. Moreover, subsequent direct laser acceleration of positrons in a plasma channel, using the same laser pulse that created them, can ensure a boost of the final positron energy by a factor of two. The positron focusing and guiding on the axis is provided by significant electron beam loading that changes the internal structure of the channel fields.

Kinematically boosted pairs from the nonlinear Breit–Wheeler process in small-angle laser collisions

We discuss that a scheme of nonperturbative pair production by high energy photons (ω≳m) in a strong external field is achievable at the next high intensity laser experiments. The pair momentum is boosted, and for ω≳1.2m, the pair yield is increased when the external field is formed by two laser pulses converging at a small angle. These characteristics are nonperturbative in origin and related to the presence of magnetic field in addition to electric field. By enhancing the signal over perturbative backgrounds, these features allow the employment of above-threshold photons ω>2m, which further increases the pair yield. We note the close relation of this photon-pair conversion mechanism to spontaneous pair creation, recommending it as an accessible stepping stone experiment using state-of-the-art or soon-to-be laser technology.

All-optical nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production with γ -flash photons

High-power laser facilities give experimental access to fundamental strong-field quantum electrodynamics processes. A key effect to be explored is the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process: the conversion of high-energy photons into electron-positron pairs through the interaction with a strong electromagnetic field. A major challenge to observing nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production experimentally is first having a suitable source of high-energy photons. In this paper we outline a simple all-optical setup which efficiently generates photons through the so-called $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-flash mechanism by irradiating a solid target with a high-power laser. We consider the collision of these photons with a secondary laser and systematically discuss the prospects for exploring the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process at current and next-generation high-power laser facilities.

Using the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process to test nonlinear vacuum birefringence

Quantum electrodynamics predicts that the quantum vacuum is birefringent, but due to the very small cross-section this is yet to be confirmed by experiment. Vacuum birefringence arises as the elastic part of photon-photon scattering; the inelastic part is Breit-Wheeler pair production. We outline how measurements of the photon-polarized nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process can be used to infer a measurement of all-order, nonlinear vacuum birefringence. As an example scenario, we calculate the accuracy of such a measurement for parameters anticipated at upcoming laser-particle experiments.

Achieving pair creation via linear and nonlinear Breit–Wheeler processes in dense plasmas irradiated by high-intensity laser pulses

It has been recently shown that over 109 electron–positron pairs can be produced from light alone at an experimentally accessible laser intensity of 5×1022W/cm2 by irradiating a target with a pre-formed channel by two counter-propagating laser pulses. Although targets of variable length and channel density have been successfully fabricated and used in recent experiments involving high-intensity lasers, the impact of these parameters on the pair yield by different pair creation processes is yet to be understood. In this paper, we explore, using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the impact of the channel density and length on pair production by the linear Breit–Wheeler process, nonlinear Breit–Wheeler process, and Bethe–Heitler process at fixed laser intensity. We find that these parameters can be successfully used to increase the linear Breit–Wheeler pair yield. More importantly, the relative contribution of each process can be adjusted by varying the same parameters. We show that this approach allows us to completely eliminate the yield from the nonlinear Breit–Wheeler process while maintaining a significant yield from the linear Breit–Wheeler process. The Bethe–Heitler process plays a secondary role in the considered system, so the majority of the positrons inside the channel are produced from light alone. Our results indicate that a structured target irradiated by two laser beams has the potential to be a versatile platform for future experimental studies of the Breit–Wheeler pair production processes, with the target parameters serving as control knobs.

Generation of quasimonoenergetic positron beams in chirped laser fields

High energy photons can decay to electron-positron pairs via the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process when colliding with an intense laser pulse. The energy spectrum of the produced particles is broadened because of the variation of their effective mass in the course of the laser pulse. Applying a suitable chirp to the laser pulse can narrow the energy distribution of the generated electrons and positrons. We present a scenario where a high-energy electron beam is collided with a chirped laser pulse to generate a beam of quasi-monoenergetic $\gamma$-photons, which then decay in a second chirped, UV pulse to produce a quasi-monoenergetic source of high-energy electrons and positrons.

Impact of the laser spatio-temporal shape on Breit–Wheeler pair production

The forthcoming generation of multi-petawatt lasers opens the way to abundant pair production by the nonlinear Breit–Wheeler process, i.e. the decay of a photon into an electron–positron pair inside an intense laser field. In this paper we explore the optimal conditions for Breit–Wheeler pair production in the head-on collision of a laser pulse with gamma photons. The role of the laser peak intensity versus the focal spot size and shape is examined keeping a constant laser energy to match experimental constraints. A simple model for the soft-shower case, where most pairs originate from the decay of the initial gamma photons, is derived. This approach provides us with a semi-analytical model for more complex situations involving either Gaussian or Laguerre–Gauss (LG) laser beams. We then explore the influence of the order of the LG beams on pair creation. Finally we obtain the result that, above a given threshold, a larger spot size (or a higher order in the case of LG laser beams) is more favorable than a higher peak intensity. Our results match very well with three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and can be used to guide upcoming experimental campaigns.

Nonperturbative signatures of nonlinear Compton scattering

The probabilities of various elementary laser - photon - electron/positron interactions display in selected phase space and parameter regions typical non-perturbative dependencies such as $\propto {\cal P} \exp\{- a E_{crit} /E\}$, where ${\cal P}$ is a pre-exponential factor, $E_{crit}$ denotes the critical Sauter-Schwinger field strength, and $E$ characterizes the (laser) field strength. While the Schwinger process with $a = a_S \equiv \pi$ and the non-linear Breit-Wheeler process in the tunneling regime with $a = a_{n \ell BW} \equiv 4 m / 3 \omega'$ (with $\omega'$ the probe photon energy and $m$ the electron/positron mass) are famous results, we point out here that also the non-linear Compton scattering exhibits a similar behavior when focusing on high harmonics. Using a suitable cut-off $c > 0$, the factor $a$ becomes $a = a_{n \ell C} \equiv \frac23 c m /(p_0 + \sqrt{p_0^2 -m^2)}$. This opens the avenue towards a new signature of the boiling point of the vacuum even for field strengths $E$ below $E_{crit}$ by employing a high electron beam-energy $p_0$ to counter balance the large ratio $E_{crit} / E$ by a small factor $a$ to achieve $E / a \to E_{crit}$. In the weak-field regime, the cut-off facilitates a threshold leading to multi-photon signatures showing up in the total cross section at sub-threshold energies.

Non-linear Breit–Wheeler process with linearly polarized beams

We study the non-linear Breit-Wheeler process $\vec \gamma' + \vec L \to e^+ + e^-$ in the interaction of linearly polarized probe photons ($\vec \gamma'$) with a linearly polarized laser beam ($\vec L$). In particular, we consider the asymmetry of the total cross section and the azimuthal electron distributions when the polarizations of the photon and laser beams in the initial state are mutually perpendicular or parallel. Considering intense laser beams and the strong field asymptotic we explore essentially the multi-photon dynamics. The asymmetry exhibits some non-monotonic behavior depending on initial kinematic conditions; it depends sensitively on the laser pulse duration. Our results provide additional knowledge for studying non-linear multi-photon effects in quantum electrodynamics and may be used in planning experiments in upcoming laser facilities.

High-energy γ -photon polarization in nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production and γ polarimetry

The interaction of an unpolarized electron beam with a counterpropagating ultraintense linearly polarized laser pulse is investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. We employ a semiclassical Monte Carlo method to describe spin-resolved electron dynamics, photon emissions and polarization, and pair production. Abundant high-energy linearly polarized gamma photons are generated intermediately during this interaction via nonlinear Compton scattering, with an average polarization degree of more than 50%, which further interacting with the laser fields produce electron-positron pairs due to nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process. The photon polarization is shown to significantly affect the pair yield by a factor beyond 10%. The considered signature of the photon polarization in the pair's yield can be experimentally identified in a prospective two-stage setup. Moreover, the signature can serve also for the polarimetry of high-energy high-flux gamma photons with a resolution well below 1% with currently achievable laser facilities.

Production of Highly Polarized Positron Beams via Helicity Transfer from Polarized Electrons in a Strong Laser Field.

The production of a highly polarized positron beam via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler processes during the interaction of an ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulse with a longitudinally spin-polarized ultrarelativistic electron beam is investigated theoretically. A new MonteCarlo method employing fully spin-resolved quantum probabilities is developed under the local constant field approximation to include three-dimensional polarization effects in strong laser fields. The produced positrons are longitudinally polarized through polarization transferred from the polarized electrons by the medium of high-energy photons. The polarization transfer efficiency can approach 100% for the energetic positrons moving at smaller deflection angles. This method simplifies the postselection procedure to generate high-quality positron beams in further applications. In a feasible scenario, a highly polarized (40%-65%), intense (10^{5}-10^{6}/bunch), collimated (5-70mrad) positron beam can be obtained in a femtosecond timescale. The longitudinally polarized positron sources are desirable for applications in high-energy physics and material science.

Uniform locally constant field approximation for photon-seeded pair production

A challenge to upcoming experiments that plan to collide a particle beam with laser pulses of moderate intensity is how to correctly incorporate quantum effects into simulation frameworks. Using a uniform approach, we extend the widely-used locally constant field approximation (LCFA) to derive an improved rate of photon-seeded pair creation (the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process). By benchmarking our "ULCFA" expressions with the lightfront spectrum of: i) exact analytical results and ii) numerical integration of the QED probability for short pulses, we show that our extended approach remains accurate at smaller values of the intensity parameter than the standard LCFA.

Quantum Mechanisms of Electron and Positron Acceleration through Nonlinear Compton Scatterings and Nonlinear Breit-Wheeler Processes in Coherent Photon Dominated Regime

Electric force is presently the only means in laboratory to accelerate charged particles to high energies, corresponding acceleration processes are classical and continuous. Here we report on how to accelerate electrons and positrons to high energies using ultra intense lasers (UIL) through two quantum processes, nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process. In the coherent photon dominated regime of these two processes, the former can effectively boost electrons/positrons and the latter can produce high energy electrons and positrons with low energy γ photons. The energy needed for such quantum acceleration (QA) is transferred from large numbers of coherent laser photons through the two quantum processes. QA also collimate the generated high energy electrons and positrons along the laser axis and the effective acceleration distance is of microscopic dimensions. Proof of principle QA experiment can be performed on 100 petawatt (PW) scale lasers which are in building or planning.

Multi-stage scheme for nonlinear Breit–Wheeler pair-production utilising ultra-intense laser-solid interactions

Multi-petawatt (PW) lasers enable intensities exceeding 1023 W cm−2, at which point quantum electrodynamics (QED) processes, such as electron–positron pair-production via the nonlinear Breit–Wheeler process, will play a significant role in laser-plasma interactions. Using 2D QED-particle-in-cell simulations, we present a two-stage scheme in which nonlinear pair-production is induced via an ultra-intense laser-solid interaction. The first stage is the generation of a γ-ray beam, through the interaction of an ultra-intense laser pulse with a thick target, whose features are found to be strongly dependent on collective plasma effects. This compact, high energy γ-ray beam (characterised by a divergence half-angle ∼10° and average photon energy ∼10 MeV) then interacts with two counter-propagating laser pulses. By varying the laser polarisation and angle of incidence, we show that in the case of two circularly polarised laser pulses propagating at an angle equal to the divergence half-angle of the γ-ray beam, the produced positron distribution is highly anisotropic compared to the case of a standard head-on collision.

Nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process in short laser double pulses

The non-linear (strong-field) Breit-Wheeler $e^+e^-$ pair production by a probe photon traversing two consecutive short and ultra short (sub-cycle) laser pulses is considered within a QED framework. The temporal shape of the pulses and the distance between them are essential for the differential cross section as a function of the azimuthal angle distribution of the outgoing electron (positron). The found effect of a pronounced azimuthal anisotropy is important for sub-cycle pulses and decreases rapidly with increasing width of the individual pulses.

Effect of the temporal laser pulse asymmetry on pair production processes during intense laser-electron scattering

We investigate the effects of laser pulse shape on strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED) processes during the collision between a relativistic electron beam and an intense laser pulse. The interplay between high-energy photon emission and two pair production processes, i.e. nonlinear Breit–Wheeler (BW) and Trident, was investigated using particle-in-cell simulations. We found that the temporal evolution of these two processes could be controlled by using laser pulses with different degrees of asymmetry. The temporal envelope of the laser pulse can significantly affect the number of pairs coming from the Trident process, while the nonlinear BW process is less sensitive to it. This study shows that the two QED processes can be examined with state-of-the-art petawatt lasers and the discrimination of the two pair creation processes is feasible by adjusting the temporal asymmetry of the colliding laser pulse.

Semiclassical picture for electron-positron photoproduction in strong laser fields

The nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process is studied in the presence of strong and short laser pulses. We show that for a relativistically intense plane-wave laser field many features of the momentum distribution of the produced electron-positron pair like its extension, region of highest probability and carrier-envelope phase effects can be explained from the classical evolution of the created particles in the background field. To this end an intuitive semiclassical picture based on the local constant-crossed field approximation applied on the probability-amplitude level is established and compared with the standard approach used in QED-PIC codes. The main difference is the substructure of the spectrum, which results from interference effects between macroscopically separated formation regions. In order to compare the predictions of the semiclassical approach with exact calculations, a very fast numerical scheme is introduced. It renders the calculation of the fully differential spectrum on a grid which resolves all interference fringes feasible. Finally, the difference between classical and quantum absorption of laser four-momentum in the process is pointed out and the dominance of the former is proven. As a self-consistent treatment of the quantum absorption is not feasible within existing QED-PIC approaches, our results provide reliable error estimates relevant for regimes where the laser depletion due to a developing QED cascade becomes significant.
