Advancing hydrogen generation: Kinetic insights and process refinement for sorption-enhanced steam gasification of biomass utilizing waste carbide slag

Sorption enhanced steam gasification of biomass (SESGB) presents a promising approach for producing high-purity H2 with potential for zero or negative carbon emissions. This study investigated the effects of gasification temperature, CaO to carbon in biomass molar ratio [CaO/C], and steam flow on the SESGB process, employing carbide slag (CS) and its modifications, CSSi2 (mass ratio of CS to SiO2 is 98:2) and CSCG5 (mass ratio of CS to coal gangue (CG) is 95:5), as CaO-based sorbents. The investigation included non-isothermal and isothermal gasification experiments and kinetic analyses using corn cob (CC) in a macro-weight thermogravimetric setup, alongside a fixed-bed pyrolysis-gasification system to assess operational parameter effects on gas product. The results suggested that CO2 capture by CaO reduced the mass loss during the main gasification as the [CaO/C] increased. The appropriate temperature for SESGB process should be selected between 550 and 700 °C at atmospheric pressure. The appropriate amount of sorbent or steam could facilitate the gasification reaction, but excessive addition led to adverse effects. Operational parameters influenced the apparent activation energy (Ea) by affecting various gasification reactions. For each test, Ea at the char gasification stage was significantly higher than that at the rapid pyrolysis stage. The addition of CS notably increased H2 concentration and yield, while sharply reducing CO2 levels. H2 concentration initially rose and then fell with greater steam flow, peaking at 76.11 vol% for a steam flow of 1.0 g/min. H2 yield peaked at 298 mL/g biomass with a steam flow of 1.5 g/min, a gasification temperature of 600 °C and a [CaO/C] of 1.0. Increasing gasification temperature remarkably boosted the H2 and CO2 yields. Optimal conditions for the SESGB using CS as a sorbent, determined via response surface methodology (RSM), include a gasification temperature of 666 °C, a [CaO/C] of 1.99, and a steam flow of 0.5 g/min, under which H2 and CO2 yields were 464 and 48 mL/g biomass, respectively. CSSi2 and CSCG5 demonstrated excellent cyclic H2 production stability, maintaining H2 yields around 440 mL/g biomass and low CO2 yields (∼60 mL/g biomass) across five cycles. The study results offer new insights for the high-value utilization of agroforestry biomass and the reduction and resource utilization of industrial waste.

Toughness modification of SBS/CRMA on epoxy asphalt: curing behaviour and low-temperature cracking characteristic analysis

ABSTRACT The limited utilisation of epoxy asphalt primarily stems from its inherent brittle cracking behaviour. This investigation aims to mitigate this issue by introducing styrene–butadiene-styrene/crumb rubber modified asphalt (SBS/CRMA). Furthermore, this research assesses the influence of SBS/CRMA on the curing behaviour of epoxy asphalt (EA) and the low-temperature fracture characteristics of epoxy asphalt concrete (EAC). The curing behaviour of EA was systematically examined using diverse analytical techniques, including attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), rotational viscosity, and non-isothermal curing kinetics analysis. Notably, SBS/CRMA expedites the curing process of epoxy asphalt, possibly attributed to the amine constituents in the crumb rubber, which acts as catalyst. Subsequently, the study scrutinised the fracture characteristics of EAC through the application of the semicircle bending (SCB) test and acoustic emission (AE) methodology. The results substantiate that SBS/CRMEAC imparts a proficient toughening effect, underpinned by an augmented stress relaxation capacity due to the reinforcing influence of elastomers such as crumb rubber and SBS. The fracture process was delineated into three distinct stage and the AE signal in matrix epoxy asphalt (MEA) exhibited concentration during the macroscopic crack extension and final fracture stages. In stark contrast, SBS/CRMEAC exhibited a uniform distribution and showcased ductile fracture characteristics.

Study on mechanism and kinetics of iron removal by chlorination roasting of coal gangue

Utilizing the abundant kaolin resources within coal gangue is economically beneficial, although the iron-containing phase in the minerals hampers the value of its utilization. In the present study, CaCl2 served as the chlorination agent for iron removal from coal gangue through chlorination roasting. The study revealed that when the roasting temperature is below 800 °C, CaCl2 decomposes into HCl and reacts with the iron content to form chloride, which then volatilizes. Comparatively, when the roasting temperature exceeds 800 °C, CaCl2 will decompose to produce HCl and Cl2 to accelerate the volatilization of iron. Through non-isothermal kinetic analysis, the apparent activation energy for iron removal by chlorination roasting of coal gangue was found to be 82.42 KJ/mol, and the pre-exponential factor was 6329.3 s−1. Correspondingly, isothermal kinetic analysis revealed the apparent activation energy of 84.2 KJ/mol and a pre-exponential factor of 6310.7 s−1. The optimal reaction kinetic mechanism function for iron removal through chlorination roasting of coal gangue was identified as the F3 chemical reaction order model via above kinetic analysis. The integral took the form g(α) = (1-α))2–1.

Rheological Properties and Kinetics of Gelation of Binary Polymers between Xanthan Gum and Locust Bean Gum.

The synergistic interaction and gelling kinetics between xanthan gum (XG) and locust bean gum (LBG) at different mass ratios (XG/LBG 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 1:9) were investigated using a rheometer. The results showed that the mixtures of XG and LBG induced gel formation, and the strongest gel structure was found for the mixture of XG/LBG 3:7 according to the yield stress, storage modulus (G'), and power law parameters. Temperature ramp studies indicated that heating destroyed the gels at 55~60 °C, while cooling induced the sol-gel transition at around 52 °C for all mixtures. Structure developing rate (SDR) curves showed that XG/LBG 3:7 exhibited the highest SDR during the cooling ramp among all the samples. Non-isothermal kinetic analysis demonstrated that the gelation process of XG/LBG mixtures during cooling included two steps: a high-temperature region (55~39 °C) needing higher activation energy (Ea, 111.97 to 199.20 kJ/mol for different mixtures) and a low-temperature region (39~20 °C) needing lower Ea (74.33 to 85.31 kJ/mol), which indicated higher energy barriers to overcome at the initial stage of gel formation. The lowest Ea of 74.33 kJ/mol was found for XG/LBG 3:7 in the low-temperature region. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the gel of XG/LBG 3:7 presented the densest entanglements. These results indicated the strongest synergism interaction occurred in XG/LBG 3:7 to form gel network structures. This study will help promote the application of XG-LBG blends to design novel food structures.

Enhancing oxidation resistance of MoAlB based on its anisotropic oxidation mechanism: A theoretical calculation guided experimental investigation

MoAlB is considered the most promising material for oxidation resistance among the MAB phase family. However, the anisotropic oxidation mechanism at the atomic scale has not been fully investigated, which may limit its practical applications. In this work the anisotropic oxidation mechanism of MoAlB was first explored through systematic theoretical calculations, based on which an effective strategy to enhance its oxidation resistance was identified and successfully implemented in the experimental work. The theoretical calculation revealed that the anisotropic oxidation of MoAlB was primarily related to the difference in free energy of surface oxidation reactions due to the degrees of electron interaction localization of O-Al bonding. A series of candidates of various transition metal-doped MoAlB materials were then designed to improve the weaker surface of MoAlB for oxidation resistance enhancement. Among these candidates, Zr-doped MoAlB was selected to further evaluate the effects of doping on the anisotropic oxidation through the electronic structure and Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). Finally, Zr-doped MoAlB was experimentally synthesized to validate the theoretical design. Non-isothermal oxidation kinetics analysis indicated that Zr doping can enhance the oxidation resistance of MoAlB by promoting the formation of a protective oxide scale and increasing the formation activation energy of volatile products, which finally reduced the thickness of the oxidation scale on the surface after isothermal oxidation of the bulk material. This work not only contributes to an in-depth understanding of the oxidation mechanisms in MoAlB but also presents a new approach to enhance its oxidation resistance and other Al containing ceramic materials beyond MAB phases.

Numerical Calculation and 3-D Imaging of the Arrhenius Temperature Integral

The Arrhenius temperature integral is typically used in non-isothermal kinetic analysis, which is widely applied in gas–solid reactions in separation processes. In previous studies, researchers provided various methods to solve the temperature integral, but the error usually became significant when the value of x (x = Ea/RT) was too large or too small. In this paper, we present a new series method and design a computer program to calculate the temperature integral. According to the precise calculation of the temperature integral, we first reveal the relationship among the integral, the temperature, and the activation energy, and we find an interesting phenomenon in which the 3-D image of the temperature integral is of self-similarity according to fractal theory. The work is useful for mechanism and theoretical studies of non-isothermal kinetics.

Coamorphous Systems of Valsartan: Thermal Analysis Contribution to Evaluate Intermolecular Interactions Effects on the Structural Relaxation.

Coamorphous formation in binary systems of valsartan (Val) with 4,4'-bipyridine (Bipy) and trimethoprim (Tri) was investigated for mixtures with a mole fraction of 0.16~0.86 of valsartan and evaluated in terms of the glass transition temperature. The glass transition of the systems had a behavior outside the values predicted by the Gordon-Taylor equation, showing that Val-Bipy (hydrogen bonding between the components) had a lower deviation and Val-Tri (ionic bonding between the components) had a higher deviation. Mixtures of compositions 2:1 Val-Bipy and 1:1 Val-Tri were selected for further investigation and verified to be stable, as no crystallization was observed during subsequent heating and cooling programs. For these systems, the effective activation energy during glass transition was evaluated. Compared to pure valsartan, the system with the lower glass transition temperature (Val-Bipy) presented the highest effective activation energy, and the system with the higher glass transition temperature (Val-Tri) presented a lower effective activation energy. The results presented a good correlation between the data obtained from two different techniques to determine the fragility and effective activation energy: non-isothermal kinetic analysis by DSC and TSDC.

Independent parallel pyrolysis kinetics of model components in sewage sludge analyzed by BPM neural network.

Analyzing the kinetic behavior of sewage sludge pyrolysis is essential for the design of efficient reactors to produce biofuel and syngas. To understand the complex pyrolysis process of sewage sludge, we pyrolyzed six model components (i.e., cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, protein, soluble sugars, and lipid) using a thermogravimetric analyzer. The effects of the heating rate on the pyrolysis process were examined at four different heating rates (5, 15, 25, and 50 °C/min). As temperature increased, the derivative thermogravimetric peaks shifted to higher temperature zones. The temperature ranges of the maximum mass loss rate for cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, protein, soluble sugars, and lipid were within 326.1-368.0 °C, 288.7-315.5 °C, 375.1-429.4 °C, 291.9-308.0 °C, 251.0-314.1 °C, and 410.8-454.1 °C, respectively. The apparent activation energies of the model components were obtained using non-isothermal kinetic analysis methods (Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose). In addition, a back-propagation artificial neural network with a momentum algorithm (BPM) was developed to predict the relationship between the pyrolysis experiment and the activation value. The best BPM model (BPM5) for predicting the cellulose pyrolysis was identified.

Low temperature oxidation of amorphous silicon nanoparticles

The oxide layer is important for the processing and applications of silicon nanoparticles as it provides chemical stability to the material. Herein, the thermal oxidation of sub-10-nm crystalline and amorphous silicon particles in dry air is investigated with nonisothermal kinetic analysis including Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods at various heating rates. The results indicate that amorphous silicon nanoparticles have a considerably lower activation energy for oxidation (98 kJ/mol) compared to their crystalline counterparts (182 kJ/mol). In situ heating diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was employed to monitor the evolution of surface species of Si nanoparticles during oxidation. The results suggest that backbond oxidation of higher hydrides contribute to the low onset temperature for oxidation of amorphous silicon nanoparticles. Besides, surface ${\mathrm{O}}_{3}\mathrm{Si}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{H}$ and Si-OH species likely prevent the formation of a dense silicon oxide layer, resulting in the low temperature oxidation behavior of amorphous silicon nanoparticles. These results provide insight into kinetics and chemistry of amorphous silicon oxidation in the thin film regime.

Reactive Blending of Recycled Poly(ethylene terephthalate)/Recycled Polypropylene: Kinetics Modeling of Non-Isothermal Crystallization.

Plastics were developed to change our world for the better. However, plastic pollution has become a serious global environmental crisis. Thermoplastic polyesters and polyolefins are among the most abundant plastic waste. This work presents an in-depth non-isothermal crystallization kinetics analysis of recycled post-consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (rPET) and recycled polypropylene (rPP) blends prepared through reactive compounding. The effect of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) on crystallization kinetics and phase morphology of rPET/rPP blends was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and microscopy techniques. DSC results showed that increasing rPP content accelerated rPET crystallization while reducing crystallinity, which indicates the nucleation effect of the rPP phase in blends. Further, it was found that the incorporation of PMDA increased the degree of crystallinity during non-isothermal crystallization, even though the rate of crystallinity decreased slightly due to its restriction effects. The non-isothermal crystallization kinetics was analyzed based on the theoretical models developed by Jeziorny, Ozawa, Mo, and Tobin. The activation energy of the crystallization process derived from Kissinger, Takhor, and Augis-Bennett models was found to increase in rPET/rPP blends with increasing PMDA due to hindered dynamics of the system. Rheological measurements revealed that rPET melt viscosity is remarkably increased in the presence of PMDA and reactive blending with rPP relevant for processing. Moreover, nanomechanical mapping of the rPP phase dispersed in the rPET matrix demonstrated the broadening of the interfacial domains after reactive blending due to the branching effect of PMDA. Findings from this study are essential for the recycling/upcycling thermoplastics through non-isothermal fabrication processes, such as extrusion and injection molding, to mitigate the lack of sorting options.

Thermal Stability and Non-Isothermal Kinetic Analysis of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Rubber Composite.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the thermal stability and the decomposition kinetics of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) composite samples loaded with and without lead powder (50, 100, and 200 phr lead) using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA was carried out at different heating rates (5, 10, 20, and 30 °C/min) under inert conditions in the temperature range of 50-650 °C. Lead addition did not significantly change the onset temperature or peak position corresponding to the maximum decomposition rate of the first derivative of the TGA curve (DTGA) (onset at about 455 °C and Tm at about 475 °C). Peak separation for the DTGA curves indicated that the main decomposition region for EPDM, the host rubber, overlapped the main decomposition region for volatile components. The decomposition activation energy (Ea) and pre-exponent factor (A) were estimated using the Friedman (FM), Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) iso-conversional methods. Average activation energy values of around 231, 230, and 223 kJ/mol were obtained for the EPDM host composite using the FM, FWO, and KAS methods, respectively. For a sample loaded with 100 phr lead, the average activation energy values obtained via the same three methods were 150, 159, and 155 kJ/mole, respectively. The results obtained from the three methods were compared with results obtained using the Kissinger and Augis-Bennett/Boswell methods, and strong convergence was found among the results of the five methods. A significant change in the entropy of the sample was detected with the addition of lead powder. For the KAS method, the change in entropy, ΔS, was -3.7 for EPDM host rubber and -90 for a sample loaded with 100 phr lead, α = 0.5.

Rheological properties of binary mixtures of Lepidium perfoliatum seed gum and xanthan gum

BackgroundIn this work, viscoelasticity, flow behaviour, thixotropy and thermo-rheological properties of binary mixtures of Lepidium perfoliatum seed gum (LPSG), as an emerging food gum, and xanthan gum (XG) at various blending ratios of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100 were studied for a depth insight into their interaction. FTIR analyses were also done to investigate the interaction between the XG and LPSG.ResultsFTIR results indicated the hydrogen bond formation between the hydrocolloids. At the linear viscoelastic region (LVE), XG-rich blends exhibited higher tan δLVE and τy, but lower τf. The values of apparent viscosity (ηa) and complex viscosity (η*) diminished with increasing shear rate/frequency, and XG and LPSG individual dispersions showed the greatest and the lowest values, respectively. Based on the extended Cox-Merz rule, a greater shift factor (α) is observed as the ratio of LPSG in the mixed gel increases. At higher fraction of LPSG, except for the fraction of 75%, the thixotropic behaviour appears to be less pronounced. The recovery parameter (R, %) obtained from in-shear structural recovery test decreased with increase in LPSG fraction. The results of non-isothermal kinetic analysis revealed higher thermodynamic incompatibility and immiscibility of LPSG-XG system in the presence of 75% XG. Moreover, according to the results of Cole–Cole plot, the greatest compatibility of LPSG and XG blends was for LPSG75-XG25 sample (β = 0.87), whereas the worst miscibility was found to be for LPSG25-XG75 one (β = 1.02).ConclusionsDifferent rheological properties could be obtained by blending various ratios of LPSG and XG, which in some ratios synergistic behaviour was observed. The wide variety of rheological properties obtained may be appropriate for the use of LPSG-XG mixtures in food industries and pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.Graphical

Microscopic mechanisms of Mn-doped CaCO3 heat carrier with enhanced optical absorption and accelerated decomposition kinetics for directly storing solar energy

The ability of calcium-based composites to simultaneously improve optical absorption and accelerate decomposition kinetics represents a major endeavor direction in the direct solar-driven thermochemical energy storage system. Doping strategy has been macroscopically proved to be an effective way in boosting optical absorption properties and calcination kinetics, but the underlying microscopic mechanisms are still unclear. This paper aims to reveal the mechanisms of optical absorption enhancement and accelerated decomposition kinetics for Mn-doped CaCO3 through both experiments and density function theory (DFT). In the experiment, the optical absorption of Mn-doped CaCO3 was much higher than that of pure CaCO3. The sample CaCO3–7Mn displayed satisfied optical absorption and fabulous cycling stability. The optical absorption reached 74% and energy storage density only decreased 2.6% after 20 cycles. Meanwhile, the decomposition reaction rate equations of pure CaCO3 and Mn-doped CaCO3 were obtained via non-isothermal kinetic analysis. The results indicated that doping Mn could accelerate decomposition kinetics of CaCO3 by reducing the apparent activation energy. In the DFT calculation, the complex refractive index of Mn-doped CaCO3 was lower in real part (refractive index) and higher in imaginary part (extinction coefficient) within the wavelength range from 300 to 2500 nm compared with pure CaCO3, which was closely related to the electron cloud distribution in the calcite crystal structure. Moreover, Mn-doped CaCO3 has lower transition state energy barrier and dissociation energy than pure CaCO3. The calculation results revealed the mechanisms of doping Mn in CaCO3 to enhance the light absorption and accelerate the decomposition kinetics from the microscopic perspective at atomic level. This work contributes to understanding the physical mechanisms of doping elements on boosting the performance of calcium-based composites at the molecular level.

Thermoreversible aging in biorejuvenated asphalt binder

Biorejuvenators are widely investigated for the restoration of performance properties of aged asphalt. However, thermoreversible aging phenomena in rejuvenated asphalt binder at cold temperatures remain largely unexplored. Three rejuvenators were used to restore aged binder. Extended bending beam rheometer (EBBR) and modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) testing were used to assess reversible aging tendencies, wax crystallization, and phase separation. Biorejuvenator was found to reduce physical aging in a dose dependent manner. Non-isothermal kinetic analysis based on the Ozawa theory showed that crystallization rate increases with dosage. However, isothermal analysis based on the Avrami theory showed no consistent changes, likely due to the relatively low conditioning temperature employed. Surprisingly, both isothermal and non-isothermal analyses indicated a risk for phase separation, especially at higher dosage levels around 0 °C. Hence, it is critical to determine optimum rejuvenator contents for an effective use in the recycled pavement.

Catalytic capacity evolution of montmorillonite in in-situ combustion of heavy oil

Clay minerals such as montmorillonite are significant in petroleum storage and recovery. Montmorillonite (Mt) is a natural solid acid catalyst containing Brønsted and Lewis acid sites and can catalyze heavy oil oxidation (HOO) during in-situ combustion (ISC). However, its catalytic activity largely depends on the heating process of heavy oil. In the study, the catalytic capacity evolution of Mt in ISC of heavy oil was explored with the isoconversional method and thermal analysis. In low-temperature oxidation (LTO) and high-temperature oxidation (HTO) stages, the addition of Mt largely reduced the peak temperatures (Tpeak) of DTA and DTG and the Tpeak of H2O (LTO and HTO stages) and CO2 (HTO stage) in HOO. Notably, Mt did not always show the positive catalytic effect. In LTO stage, the thermal transformation process had a small effect on DTA Tpeak, Tpeak of H2O and CO2, and the reaction activation energy (Eα) of HOO. In HTO stage, the catalytic effect of Mt on HOO was related to its thermal transformation process, especially interlayer water (IW) dehydration and dehydroxylation. In HTO stage, the IW dehydration process of Mt showed the strongest catalytic effect on HOO, significantly reduced DTA Tpeak and Eα, and resulted in the lowest Tpeak of H2O and CO2. The dehydroxylation process of Mt also showed a certain effect, whereas the overlapping process between the dehydration (IW) reaction and partial dehydroxylation reaction of Mt had no positive catalytic effect on HOO. DTA, TG-FTIR, and non-isothermal kinetic analysis further confirmed that the catalytic capacity of Mt in HTO stage was improved by IW dehydration process of Mt and weakened by the dehydroxylation process of Mt.

Structural Characterization, Thermal Stability and Non-Isothermal Kinetic Analysis of Decomposition of Poly(methylmethacrylate) and Titanium Dioxide Nanocomposites

In this study poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) and the corresponding nanocomposites loaded with titanium dioxide (TiO2) films were prepared by a solution casting method. All materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that the incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles in PMMA decreased the thermal stability of the polymer. Moreover, the kinetic study of the thermal degradation showed that the apparent activation energies of the nanocomposites PMMA/TiO2 were lower compared to the pure PMMA, confirming the catalytic effect of TiO2 nanoparticles on the PMMA thermal decomposition. Furthermore, g(α), which is the integral form of the reaction mechanism function, showed that the degradation mechanism of the PMMA nanocomposites was strongly dependent on the TiO2 amount introduced into their matrices. Finally, the degradation mechanism of the pure PMMA obeyed the R3 model corresponding to a phase boundary reaction (n = 3), whereas in the case of the PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites, they obeyed the R2 model, corresponding to a phase boundary reaction (n = 2), for PMMA/TiO2 (3%) and an A1.5 model, corresponding to an Avrami-Erofeev correlation (m = 1.5), was obtained for the remaining nanocomposites PMMA/TiO2 (5, 7 and 10%).

High-Performance Optical PET Analysis via Non-Isothermal Crystallization Kinetics.

The optical properties of PET have always been a problem that related research has been trying to break through. In the previous work, we modified PET by adding PSLDH (phosphate antioxidant) to obtain a PET film with excellent optical properties. Through non-isothermal crystallization kinetic analysis of modified PET, we hope to verify the conclusion of optical properties by the effect of PSLDH addition on the crystallization properties of PET. PET and PSLDH modified PET were tested by DSC at different cooling rates. The non-isothermal crystallization kinetic process was calculated and analyzed by Jeziorny and Mo methods and the non-isothermal crystallization activation energy was analyzed by Kissinger and Friedman methods by analyzing the DSC curves. The results show that the addition of PSLDH at 0.05 wt% can make the crystallization of PET smaller and slower, which is the same as the case required for excellent optical properties. At the same time, the results can also guide the processing of the optical PET film.
