Advancing high-performance visible light communication with long-wavelength InGaN-based micro-LEDs

This study showcases a method for achieving high-performance yellow and red micro-LEDs through precise control of indium content within quantum wells. By employing a hybrid quantum well structure with our six core technologies, we can accomplish outstanding external quantum efficiency (EQE) and robust stripe bandwidth. The resulting 30 μm × 8 micro-LED arrays exhibit maximum EQE values of 11.56% and 5.47% for yellow and red variants, respectively. Notably, the yellow micro-LED arrays achieve data rates exceeding 1 Gbit/s for non-return-to-zero on–off keying (NRZ-OOK) format and 1.5 Gbit/s for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) format. These findings underscore the significant potential of long-wavelength InGaN-based micro-LEDs, positioning them as highly promising candidates for both full-color microdisplays and visible light communication applications.

Analysis of Effect of Input Power and RF Optical Signal Rate on Optical Communication System with OOK-NRZ Modulation

This study analyzed optical and RF signals in optical communication systems using the On-Off Keying Non-Return to Zero (OOK-NRZ) modulation method and the direct-detection receiver model with PIN photodiodes. In this study, a simulation was carried out using Python software. Changes in optical modulation input power and Symbol rate (Rs) were explored to understand their effect on signal characteristics. Models of ideal photodiodes (noiseless) and noisy photodiodes (considering thermal noise, shot noise, and bandwidth constraints) were used to compare receiver signals. The eye diagram analysis was employed to visualize receiver signal variation in a given time span. The results of this analysis provide a better understanding of the influence of changes in input power and symbol rate on optical communication systems through the OOK-NRZ method and insight into the characteristics of the receiving signal under realistic conditions. This study is able to provide guidance for the design and evaluation of optical communication systems using OOK-NRZ modulation and direct detection receivers.

Application of FWM-Based OFC for DWDM Optical Communication System with Embedded FBG Sensor Network

Abstract Four-wave mixing optical frequency comb fibre-based setups (FWM-OFCs) have the potential to improve the combined dense wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (DWDM-PON) and fibre Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensors network providing easier application, broader technological opportunities for network development, and energy efficiency by substituting a power-demanding laser array. In this research, OFCs are generated for the purpose of combined network application of DWDM-PON and FBG optical sensors. The paper also investigates compatibility scenarios with OFCs in such systems. The mathematical simulation model has been developed and the performance of FWM-OFC based 8-channel 50 GHz spaced non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulated DWDM-PON transmission system, operating at 50 km single-mode fibre (SMF) with a bit rate of at least 10 Gbps embedded with 7 FBG optical temperature sensors, has been studied. As it is shown, FWM application results in OFC source that has fluctuations of the individual comb tones of less than 3 dB in power, and with an extinction ratio of about 33 dB for operation range of 192.9–193.25 THz, acting as a unified light source for all the data transmission channels. Embedded FBG optical sensors network causes negligible 0.3 dB power penalty.

Wide-field-of-view optical detectors for deep ultraviolet light communication using all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) links suffer from strict requirements of pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) between the transmitter and receiver. Extending the narrow field-of-view (FoV) of conventional light-focusing elements at the receiver side can relax the PAT requirements. Herein, we use all-inorganic CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) to extend various optical concentrators' FOV to 60°, regardless of the original FOV values of the concentrators. Given the robustness of UV light against communication channel misalignment, the used CsPbBr3 NCs provide another advantage of converting transmitted UVC light into a green color that matches the peak absorption of the widely available Si-based detectors. We evaluated the feasibility of the reported wide FoV optical detectors by including them in deep UV OWC systems, deploying non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) and orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation schemes. The NRZ-OOK and OFDM schemes exhibit stable communication over the 60° FoV, providing data transmission rates of 100 Mb/s and 71.6 Mb/s, respectively, a unique capability to the reported design.

200 Gb/s Optical-Amplifier-Free IM/DD Transmissions Using a Directly Modulated O-Band DFB+R Laser Targeting LR Applications

We experimentally demonstrate an O-band single-lane 200 Gb/s intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system using a low-chirp, broadband, and high-power directly modulated laser (DML). The employed laser is an isolator-free packaged module with over 65-GHz modulation bandwidth enabled by a distributed feedback plus passive waveguide reflection (DFB+R) design. We transmit high baud rate signals over 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without using any optical amplifiers and demodulate them with reasonably low-complexity digital equalizers. We generate and detect up to 170 Gbaud non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK), 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and 100 Gbaud PAM6 in the optical back-to-back configuration. After transmission over the 20-km optical-amplifier-free SSMF link, up to 150 Gbaud NRZ-OOK, 106 Gbaud PAM4, and 80 Gbaud PAM6 signals are successfully received and demodulated, achieving bit error rate (BER) performance below the 6.25%-overhead hard-decision (HD) forward-error-correction code (FEC) limit. The demonstrated results show the possibility of meeting the strict requirements towards the development of 200Gb/s/lane IM/DD technologies, targeting 800Gb/s and 1.6Tb/s LR applications.

Transmitter for 1.9 Gbps phosphor white light visible light communication without a blue filter based on OOK-NRZ modulation.

Due to narrow bandwidth and slow yellow light, it is difficult for visible light communication (VLC) systems based on high-power phosphor-coated light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to support high data rates. In this paper, a novel transmitter based on a commercial phosphor-coated LED is proposed, which can achieve a wideband VLC system without a blue filter. The transmitter consists of a folded equalization circuit and a bridge-T equalizer. The folded equalization circuit is based on a new equalization scheme and can expand the bandwidth of high-power LEDs more significantly. The bridge-T equalizer is used to reduce the influence of the slow yellow light generated by the phosphor-coated LED, which is more suitable than blue filters. Utilizing the proposed transmitter, the 3 dB bandwidth of the VLC system using the phosphor-coated LED is extended from several megahertz to 893 MHz. As a result, the VLC system can support real-time on-off keying non-return to zero (OOK-NRZ) data rates up to 1.9 Gb/s at a distance of 7 m with a bit error rate (BER) of 3 × 10-5.

16-channel photonic–electric co-designed silicon transmitter with ultra-low power consumption

A hybrid integrated 16-channel silicon transmitter based on co-designed photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and electrical chiplets is demonstrated. The driver in the 65 nm CMOS process employs the combination of a distributed architecture, two-tap feedforward equalization (FFE), and a push–pull output stage, exhibiting an estimated differential output swing of 4.0Vpp. The rms jitter of 2.0 ps is achieved at 50 Gb/s under nonreturn-to-zero on–off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation. The PICs are fabricated on a standard silicon-on-insulator platform and consist of 16 parallel silicon dual-drive Mach–Zehnder modulators on a single chip. The chip-on-board co-packaged Si transmitter is constituted by the multichannel chiplets without any off-chip bias control, which significantly simplifies the system complexity. Experimentally, the open and clear optical eye diagrams of selected channels up to 50 Gb/s OOK with extinction ratios exceeding 3 dB are obtained without any digital signal processing. The power consumption of the Si transmitter with a high integration density featuring a throughput up to 800 Gb/s is only 5.35 pJ/bit, indicating a great potential for massively parallel terabit-scale optical interconnects for future hyperscale data centers and high-performance computing systems.

100 Gb/s NRZ OOK signal regeneration using four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with reverse-biased p-i-n junction.

A silicon waveguide with reverse-biased p-i-n junction is used to experimentally demonstrate all-optical regeneration of non-return-to-zero (NRZ) on-off keying (OOK) signal based on four-wave mixing. The silicon waveguide allows a high conversion efficiency of -12 dB. The 0.22 dB (1.1 dB) quality (Q) factor and 0.74 dB (6.3 dB) extinction ratio (ER) improvements on average are achieved for 100 Gb/s (50 Gb/s) NRZ OOK signal regeneration at different receiving powers via the optimal match between the input signal optical power and input-output transfer curve. To the best of our knowledge, this silicon-based all-optical regenerator exhibits superior regeneration performance, including large ER and Q factor improvements, and the highest regeneration speed of NRZ OOK signal, and it has wide applications in 5 G/6 G networks.

DAC/ADC-free 4 × 12.9 Gbit/s 65,536-level quantum noise stream cipher secure optical WDM transmission based on delta-sigma modulation.

We propose and experimentally study a novel, to the best of our knowledge, quantum noise stream cipher (QNSC) secure transmission scheme based on the delta-sigma modulation (DSM) technique. The cooperation of the QNSC and DSM mechanisms makes it possible to transmit an ultrahigh-order encrypted signal in the non-return-to-zero (NRZ) on-off keying (OOK) format. The delivery of the NRZ OOK waveform over the fiber link allows us to send and receive signals using digital ports, instead of high-speed and high-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs)in conventional QNSC systems. Meanwhile, clock synchronization can be achieved by using a simple clock data recovery algorithm. The extra clock signal transmission link in conventional QNSC systems is no longer needed. The proposed scheme is also compatible with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. In this work, 4 × 12.9 Gbit/s plaintext is encrypted to a 65,536-level QNSC signal and then transmitted over a 10-km standard single-mode fiber. The transmitter and receiver are established by commercial 100G QSFP28 optical modules with clock data recovery. This proposed scheme can be easily deployed in commercial systems due to its minimalist implementation architecture and relatively low hardware cost.

80Gb/s NRZ Ge waveguide electro-absorption modulator.

We demonstrate a Ge electro-absorption modulator (EAM) in L band with a 3 dB electro-optical bandwidth beyond 67 GHz at -3 V bias voltage. The Eye diagram measurement shows a data rate of over 80 Gbps for non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation at a voltage swing of 2.3 Vpp and the wavelength of 1605 nm. Through the comparison of multi-device results, it is proved that the introduction of the annealing process after CMP can increase the mean static extinction ratio of the EAM from 7.27 dB to 11.83 dB, which confirms the manufacturability of the device. The dynamic power consumption of the device is 6.348 fJ/bit. The performance of our device is comprehensive. The Ge EAM device also has excellent performance as a photodetector (PD) in the C and L communication bands. The responsivity of the device is 1.04 A/W at the wavelength of 1610 nm, resulting in ∼0.87 mW of static power consumption at -3 V bias voltage under 0.28 mW of optical input and the 3 dB opto-electric bandwidth of the devices are beyond 43 GHz at -3 V bias.

Multi-Mode Transmitter Based on Silicon Microring Modulators

We propose and demonstrate a multi-mode transmitter based on cascaded silicon microring modulators (MRMs). By sharing bus waveguide at drop ports of the MRMs, data modulation and mode multiplexing could be achieved simultaneously, resulting in a simplified layout with compact size. For the proof-of-concept demonstration, multi-mode transmitter for TE <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</sub> and TE <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">1</sub> modes is fabricated. Transmission of non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) signals with the bit rate of 2 × 25 Gbps is experimentally demonstrated. Measured eye diagrams and bit error rate (BER) results indicate good transmission performance.

Single-Lane 54-Gbit/s PAM-4/8 Signal Transmissions Using 10G-Class Directly Modulated Lasers Enabled by Low-Complexity Nonlinear Digital Equalization

This work presents the use of a directly modulated laser (DML) in time- and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networks (TWDM-PONs), in which an EDFA-based booster amplification and an SOA-based pre-amplification are utilized to improve the optical power budget. We experimentally demonstrate the C-band optically amplified data transmissions and compare the performance of the non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), four and eight-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4/PAM-8) using a 10-G class DML. With optical amplification, the uplink and downlink power budgets of about 28 dB and 35 dB, respectively, are achieved for the PAM-4 54-Gbit/s signals at the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) limit of 3.8x10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-3</sup> after transmissions over a 25-km single-mode fiber link. To mitigate waveform distortions caused by the limited bandwidth, nonlinear dynamics, memory effects, and strong laser frequency chirp of the DML, especially during multi-level signal modulations, artificial neural network-based machine learning equalizers and low-complexity Volterra nonlinear equalizers are applied, which operate at the signal baud rate. The bit error ratio performance in conjunction with an enhanced power budget through the use of a low-complexity nonlinear equalizer can justify the validity of using a DML in the next-generation PONs.

Performing the high bitrate visible light communications in the foggy weather to anticipate the interference on vehicle communications

We propose transmission media with visible light to communicate between vehicles. We evaluate the research under four scenarios using the modulation of On-Off Keying Non-Return to Zero (OOK-NRZ) and bitrate up to 1 Gbps. These scenarios are (i) ideal conditions, (ii) interference from other vehicle lights, (iii) foggy conditions, and (iv) interference from vehicles and fog conditions. Based on the extensive simulation, the results obtained are that interference and fog conditions can affect and reduce the value of the signal to interference and noise ratio (SNR) and increase the value of the error rate (BER). The SNR value in the first scenario is 23.6 dB and the second scenario is 11.1 dB, where this value is still sufficient. The SNR in scenario three is 16.1 dB, and the lowest in the fourth scenario is -7.78326 dB, indicating that the noise is extensive compared to signal power. In addition, we also obtain an optimal distance of communication between vehicles for each scenario sequentially 14.5 m, 13 m, 11.5 m, and 9 m.

Coupling angle tolerance of the 850-nm single-mode VCSEL output collimated by lensed OM4-MMF or GI-SMF for a NRZ-OOK link.

By collimating the single-mode (SM) vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) at 850 nm with either the OM4 multi-mode fiber (OM4-MMF) or the graded-index single-mode fiber (GI-SMF) with lensed end-face, the directly encoded non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) data transmission performance is characterized when tilting the coupling angle with respect to the surface normal of the SM-VCSEL. In comparison with the lensed OM4-MMF and lensed SMF coupling, the lensed OM4-MMF collimator shows a large coupling angle tolerance with the coupling efficiency only degraded by 5% when enlarging the tilted angle from 0° to 10°. In contrast, the lensed GI-SMF collimator attenuates the coupled SM-VCSEL output by more than 50% when tilting the coupling angle up to 10°. For the lensed OM4-MMF coupling, the receivable NRZ-OOK data rate in BtB and after 100-m OM4-MMF cases can achieve 50 Gbit/s with its corresponding BER degraded from 6.5 × 10-10 to 8.8 × 10-10 when enlarging its tilting angle ranged from 0° to 10°. By changing the collimator to the lensed SMF, the decoded BER significantly degrades from 5.8 × 10-5 to 1.2 × 10-1 when coupling and transmitting the NRZ-OOK data at 50 Gbit/s. Owing to the low coupling efficiency via the lensed SMF collimator, the error-free NRZ-OOK data rate under the lensed SMF coupling somewhat decreases to 35 Gbit/s in the BtB link and to 32 Gbit/s after the 100-m GI-SMF link with allowable coupling angle tilted from 0° to 4°. This work confirms the applicability of the lensed MMF or SMF collimator for coupling the SM-VCSEL output with a relatively large tolerance on the tilting angle with respect to the surface normal of the SM-VCSEL.

12 Gbit/s indoor optical wireless communication system with ultrafast beam-steering using tunable VCSEL.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) using line-of-sight connections has great application potential for indoor scenes due to its advantages of high data transmission speed and privacy. In our proposed system, we use infrared tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) as light source, array waveguide gratings (AWG) combined with 6 × 6 integrated optical fiber arrays as a router to realize ultrafast beam-steering and high capacity point-to-point data transmission, which makes the indoor OWC system compact, low-cost, and easy to install. The high tuning rate of VCSEL enables the channel switching to be completed within 1.7 µs. Based on the modulation format of non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), a data rate of 12 Gbit/s per channel can be realized with high sensitivity through 3.1 m free space when the detected optical power is low. The system is proved to be a flexible link with high-speed communication for mobile terminals in a limited space.

All-inorganic halide-perovskite polymer-fiber-photodetector for high-speed optical wireless communication.

The use of optical carrier frequencies will enable seamless data connection for future terrestrial and underwater internet uses and will resolve the technological gap faced by other communication modalities. However, several issues must be solved to propel this technological shift, which include the limitations in designing optical receivers with large detection areas, omnidirectionality, and high modulation bandwidth, mimicking antennas operating in the radio-frequency spectrum. To address this technological gap, herein, we demonstrate halide-perovskite-polymer-based scintillating fibers as a near-omnidirectional detection platform for several tens-to-hundreds of Mbit/s optical communication in both free space and underwater links. The incorporation of all-inorganic CsPbBr3 nanocrystals by engineering the nanocrystal concentration in an ultraviolet-curable polymer matrix ensures a high photoluminescence quantum yield, Mega-Hertz modulation bandwidth and Mbit/s data rate suitable to be used as a high-speed fibers-based receiver. The resultant perovskite polymer-based scintillating fibers offer flexibility in terms of shape and near-omnidirectional detection features. Such fiber properties also introduce a scalable detection area which can resolve the resistance-capacitance and angle-of-acceptance limits in planar-based detectors, which conventionally impose a trade-off between the modulation bandwidth, detection area, and angle of view. A high bit rate of 23 Mbit/s and 152.5 Mbit/s was achieved using an intensity-modulated laser for non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation scheme in free-space and quadrature amplitude modulation orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (QAM-OFDM) modulation scheme in an underwater environment, respectively. Our near-omnidirectional optical-based antenna based on perovskite-polymer-based scintillating fibers sheds light on the immense possibilities of incorporating functional nanomaterials for empowering light-based terrestrial- and underwater-internet systems.

Effect of Transmission-Line Contact Length on the 50-Gbit/s Data Encoding Performance of a Multimode VCSEL

Directly modulated 850-nm multimode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (MM-VCSELs) with different oxide apertures and transmission microstrip lengths are compared on the transmission performance of the non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) and four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) data formats. In this work, intrinsic and extrinsic responses of the MM-VCSEL are also discussed concurrently. By tuning the length of the transmission microstrip in VCSEL, the low reflection coefficient and the enhanced 3-dB modulation bandwidth are achieved. The inductance of the transmission microstrip in the series connection with the capacitance in the active region is optimized to reduce the power loss induced by imaginary impedance. The different oxide aperture sizes for MM-VCSEL are also studied to control the capacitance and photon density. More importantly, the 3-dB modulation bandwidth, impedance matching, slope efficiency, relative intensity noise (RIN), and mode partition noise (MPN) for the MM-VCSEL with various designs are discussed to determine the best device with the high-speed transmission capability. The optimal MM-VCSEL with a diameter of 7 µm oxide aperture and a length of 25 µm transmission microstrip successfully demonstrates 50-Gbit/s OOK and 84-Gbit/s PAM4 after using the pre-emphasis technique for future data-center applications.

15 Mbps underwater wireless optical communications based on acousto-optic modulator and NRZ-OOK modulation

Communications with link distance of hundreds of meters and data rate of tens of Mbps are highly demanded in underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC) between autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and submarines, or among others underwater platforms. In these cases, a high-power light source has to be used and an external modulation must be imposed. Here we present an UWOC system based on acousto-optic modulator (AOM), Non-Return-to-Zero On-Off Keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation and 520 nm green laser diode light source. A data rate of 15 Mbps, the highest reported values of an UWOC system using AOM to our best knowledge, with 9 m distance and 1.53 × 10-4 bit error rate (BER), as well as the longest distance of 18 m with 12 Mbps data rate and 4.7 × 10-3 BER are obtained in the tap water, in which an attenuation coefficient of 0.0503 m−1 for 520 nm wavelength is measured. By adding different dosages of Maalox suspension, different types of water quality are prepared, and the influences of Maalox concentration on the attenuation coefficient and the BER are investigated. It is found that increasing Maalox concentrations would worse the scatter effect of light beam, which further affect the transmission performance of the signal.

Effect of Chirped Dispersion and Modal Partition Noise on Multimode VCSEL Encoded With NRZ-OOK and PAM-4 Formats

Chirp-dispersion and data transmission analyses of the multimode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (MM-VCSEL) with a 7.5-μm oxide-confined aperture and a root-mean-square spectral linewidth of 1 nm is performed for intra-data-center application. For directly modulating the non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) and the 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) data streams, an optimized bias current of 17 mA and a data amplitude of 800 mV are selected to provide the MM-VCSEL with an output optical power of 6.1 mW and a transverse mode number of 17. Such an optimized operation enables the MM-VCSEL with a differential resistance of 45.3 Ω to approach the impedance matching by driving the circuit such that the -3-dB bandwidth can be achieved to 23.8 GHz. The relative intensity noise and mode-partition-noise of the MM-VCSEL are analyzed to perform the optimized NRZ-OOK/PAM4 data encoding. By utilizing the pre-emphasis technique to compensate for the intensity and phase variation, the encoded NRZ-OOK and PAM-4 can be respectively promoted to 61 Gbit/s and 96 Gbit/s in the back-to-back (BtB) case. After passing through the 100-m OM5 multi-mode-fiber (MMF) link to suffer the severe modal dispersion, the data rate would respectively degrade to 45 Gbit/s (or 4.5 Gbit·km/s) and 70 Gbit/s (or 7 Gbit·km/s) for OOK and PAM-4 transmission.

Ultra-wide band (O to L) photonic integrated polymer cross-bar switch matrix.

We present an ultra-wide band photonic integrated 4×4 polymer cross-bar switch matrix based on total internal reflection and the thermo-optic effect. The photonic integrated polymer switch owns low insertion loss, low power consumption, wavelength, and polarization-independent operation for all switching paths. The experimental results show ultra-wide band (O- to L-band) operation with fiber-to-fiber insertion losses ranging from -3.7 to -6.5dB, 0.1 to 0.6 dB polarization-dependent losses, switching the on-off ratio above 36 dB on average, and 25 mW power consumption per path. Error-free operation with a power penalty <0.2dB at 1 E-9 bit error rate (BER) for ultra-wide band non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) switched signals at 10, 25, 40, and 50 Gbit/s, and 510 Gbps dual polarization 64-QAM switched data with a negligible penalty were measured.
