Identifying Trends in the Most Cited Nursing Articles: Research Topics, Author Gender Representation and Characteristics Correlated With Citation Counts.

To assess the top 1000 cited nursing articles in terms of their impact, conceptual and social characteristics. Bibliometric literature review design. A bibliometric analysis on the 1000 most cited nursing articles in English, focusing on assessing their impact and prevalent terms, keywords, co-occurrence networks and topic trends. Non-parametric statistical tests were used. Web of Science Core Collection (accessed 14 February 2024). The 1000 most cited articles were exported from 201,310 eligible articles. The most cited articles received a total of 319,643 citations. The Journal of Advanced Nursing and the International Journal of Nursing Studies were the most cited journals. Literature reviews accounted for 21% of the most cited articles, compared to only 7% of all eligible articles. Most first authors were female, 63%. The data showed an increase in female first authorship among the most cited articles over time. This may reflect a shift towards greater gender equity in nursing research. Shorter article titles and fewer article pages were associated with more citations. Methodological and conceptual articles received the most citations, likely due to their broad applicability (e.g., across disciplines) and enduring relevance. There was a statistically significant correlation between article brevity and citation count, but the relationship should be viewed with caution given the small effect size. Bibliometrics is important for evidence-based practice because it helps nurses evaluate journals, articles and research topics. Since citation counts do not always indicate research quality, nurses and nursing students would benefit from training in bibliometrics to enhance their critical thinking in this area. Top-cited nursing articles indicate influential research topics and methods. They also influence authors' academic career opportunities, allowing assessment of research equity in terms of dominant countries and author gender representation. Transcriptional pathways of terminal differentiation in high- and low-density blood granulocytes in sepsis

BackgroundTrauma and infection induce emergency granulopoiesis. Counts of immature granulocytes and transcriptional pathways of terminal granulocytic differentiation in blood are elevated in sepsis but correlate with disease severity. This limits their performance as sepsis biomarkers in critically ill patients. We hypothesized that activation of these pathways in sepsis is attributable to immature low-density (LD) rather than mature high-density (HD) granulocytes.MethodsWe included patients with sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) of comparable disease severity, and additionally septic shock, on intensive or intermediate care unit admission. Blood granulocyte isolation by CD15 MicroBeads was followed by density-gradient centrifugation. Flow cytometry was used to determine counts of developmental stages (precursors) and their relative abundancies in total, HD, and LD granulocytes. Five degranulation markers were quantified in plasma by multiplex immunoassays. A set of 135 genes mapping granulocyte differentiation was assayed by QuantiGene™ Plex. CEACAM4, PLAC8, and CD63 were analyzed by qRT-PCR. Nonparametric statistical tests were applied.ResultsPrecursor counts appeared higher in sepsis than SIRS but did not correlate with disease severity for early immature and mature granulocytes. Precursor subpopulations were enriched at least ten-fold in LD over HD granulocytes without sepsis-SIRS differences. Degranulation markers in blood were comparable in sepsis and SIRS. Higher expression of early developmental genes in sepsis than SIRS was more pronounced in LD and less in HD than total granulocytes. Only the cell membrane protein encoding genes CXCR2 and CEACAM4 were more highly expressed in SIRS than sepsis. By qRT-PCR, the azurophilic granule genes CD63 and PLAC8 showed higher sepsis than SIRS levels in LD granulocytes and PLAC8 also in total granulocytes where its discriminatory performance resembled C-reactive protein (CRP).ConclusionsTranscriptional programs of early terminal granulocytic differentiation distinguish sepsis from SIRS due to both higher counts of immature granulocytes and elevated expression of early developmental genes in sepsis. The sustained expression of PLAC8 in mature granulocytes likely accounts for its selection in the whole blood SeptiCyte™ LAB test. Total granulocyte PLAC8 rivals CRP as sepsis biomarker. However, infection-specific transcriptional pathways, that differentiate sepsis from sterile stress-induced granulocytosis more reliably than CRP, remain to be identified.

The Role of 70-MHz Ultrahigh-Frequency Ultrasound in the Peripheral Nerve Injury.

High-frequency ultrasound with an 18-MHz probe (18 MHz-HFUS) plays a relevant role in the evaluation of peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Ultrahigh-frequency ultrasound with a 70-MHz probe (70 MHz-UHFUS) offers higher spatial resolution and could allow a better detection of PNI. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of HFUS and UHFUS in PNI detection. In this retrospective study, were selected, between July 2022 and April 2024, 61 patients underwent HFUS, UHFUS, and nerve conduction study (NCS) for clinical suspicion of traumatic forearm PNI. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and diagnostic accuracy of HFUS and UHFUS in PNI detection were calculated and compared. NCS was used as the reference standard. Nonparametric statistical tests were used. A p value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Comparing the diagnostic performance in PNI detection, the 70 MHz-UHFUS showed a sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy significantly higher than 18 MHz-HFUS, respectively, 98.0% versus 82.4% (p = 0.0205) and 95.1% versus 82.0% (p = 0.0468). Otherwise, not significantly difference were in specificity, PPV, and NPV. UHFUS compared to HFUS demonstrated a higher sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy in PNI detection.

The influence of endodontic treatment quality on periapical lesions' architecture in cone-beam computed tomography.

This study assessed the influence of root canal treatment quality on the architecture of periapical lesions. A total of 121 lesions were involved in this research. Two researchers analysed the surface of the lesions, diameters in three planes, volume and sphericity. The quality of root canal treatment was assessed with PESS index. Non-parametric statistical tests: Mann-Whitney and Spearman rank correlation coefficient were used in this research. Connected lesions of multirooted teeth spread in the coronal plane revealed a positive correlation with coronal seal and root canal filling homogenicity, however their spread in the sagittal plane showed a positive correlation only with root canal filling homogenicity. The quality of root canal treatment has an influence on the periapical lesions' architecture.

MLA Research Training Institute (RTI) 2018 and 2019: participant research confidence and program effectiveness.

The article reports on an assessment of the effectiveness of the MLA Research Training Institute (RTI) for the years 2018 and 2019. The RTI is a year-long continuing education research methods training and support program for health sciences librarians. The study focuses on assessing RTI participants' research confidence after program completion and compares these results with their perceptions of workshop/program performance and learning outcomes. In addition, the authors discuss how the findings were applied to inform and improve the program. The study used a 26-item questionnaire, RTI Research Confidence Questionnaire, to gather information on participants' self-reported research confidence before the workshop, immediately after the workshop, and one year after the workshop to determine statistically significant differences. Differences in research confidence were identified by using three nonparametric statistical tests. Additional workshop and program surveys were used to corroborate the research confidence findings. Post-workshop and one-year-after-workshop research confidence ratings were significantly higher than pre-workshop levels for years 1 and 2. A comparison of median ratings between years 1 and 2 showed significant increases in research confidence for nine items in year 2. Participants' positive perceptions of workshop/program effectiveness and learning outcomes corroborated these findings. Overall assessment findings indicated that RTI training helped participants understand, use, and apply research skills to conduct research. Findings also revealed that participants' heightened research confidence persisted at least 12 months postintervention. The RTI Research Confidence Questionnaire proved effective for rigorously assessing and improving the RTI program. This study enhances the currently limited evidence on evidence-based approaches for assessing and improving research instruction for librarians.

Group sequential testing of a treatment effect using a surrogate marker.

The identification of surrogate markers is motivated by their potential to make decisions sooner about a treatment effect. However, few methods have been developed to actually use a surrogate marker to test for a treatment effect in a future study. Most existing methods consider combining surrogate marker and primary outcome information to test for a treatment effect, rely on fully parametric methods where strict parametric assumptions are made about the relationship between the surrogate and the outcome, and/or assume the surrogate marker is measured at only a single time point. Recent work has proposed a nonparametric test for a treatment effect using only surrogate marker information measured at a single time point by borrowing information learned from a prior study where both the surrogate and primary outcome were measured. In this paper, we utilize this nonparametric test and propose group sequential procedures that allow for early stopping of treatment effect testing in a setting where the surrogate marker is measured repeatedly over time. We derive the properties of the correlated surrogate-based nonparametric test statistics at multiple time points and compute stopping boundaries that allow for early stopping for a significant treatment effect, or for futility. We examine the performance of our proposed test using a simulation study and illustrate the method using data from two distinct AIDS clinical trials.

Fundamentals of Nonparametric Statistical Tests for Dental Clinical Research.

This article provides the foundation for employing nonparametric testing in dental clinical research. To make wise judgments in their research, investigators should learn more about the main nonparametric tests and their particular uses. Biostatistical analysis is essential in dental research; dental research frequently deviates from the assumptions that underpin traditional parametric statistics. Nonparametric statistics are useful for studies with small sample sizes, nominal- or ordinal-level data, and non-normally distributed variables. These statistical tests make no assumptions about the sampled population. Nonparametric tests are statistical methods based on signs and ranks. For dental research to be conducted effectively and accurately, statistical approaches must be applied correctly. Therefore, dental researchers must understand the many statistical methods at their disposal and know when to use them.

Physical Function, Self-Perceived Physical Fitness, Falls, Quality of Life and Degree of Disability According to Fear and Risk of Falling in Women with Fibromyalgia.

Background: People with fibromyalgia (FM) experience a range of symptoms (chronic widespread pain, fatigue, mood disorder, sleep problems, muscle stiffness) that promote deterioration of physical condition and function. With impaired physical function, fear of falling and risk of falling increases. This study evaluated physical function, self-perceived physical fitness, falls, quality of life, and the degree of disability caused by FM according to fear and risk of falling in Spanish adult women with FM. Methods: Cross-sectional study involving 84 Spanish adult women with FM. Participants completed tests to assess their physical function and completed questionnaires to evaluate self-perceived physical fitness, falls, the disabling effect of FM, quality of life, fear of falling, and risk of falling. Nonparametric statistical tests were used to analyze possible intergroup differences (Mann-Whitney U test) and correlations between variables (Spearman's Rho). Results: Women with a fear of falling and at risk of falling presented a worse performance in physical tests, worse self-perceived physical fitness, greater number of falls, lower quality of life, and greater degree of disability due to FM. Weak and moderate correlations were found for fear of falling and fall risk and the variables of interest. However, no intergroup differences were found, nor significant correlations in all variables. Conclusions: Women with FM who present fear of falling and risk of falling tend to have worse performance in physical function tests, in addition to worse self-perceived physical fitness, higher number of falls, poorer quality of life, and greater disabling effect of FM.

Application of microcirculatory indicators in predicting the prognosis of patients with septic shock

ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to investigate the predictive value of indicators associated with microcirculation, capillary refill time (CRT), perfusion index (PI), and mottling score, on the prognosis of patients with septic shock. MethodA retrospective clinical study was conducted encompassing 78 patients diagnosed with septic shock and admitted to the Department of Critical Care Medicine at our hospital from January 2019 to January 2022. The study collated the clinical data of these patients, focusing on macrocirculatory hemodynamic parameters and microcirculatory indices. The parameters of interest were recorded at 0, 6, 24, and 48 h post-admission, including heart rate, mean arterial pressure (MAP), venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure difference, superior vena cava oxygen saturation, lactic acid (LAC), CRT, PI, and mottling score. The enrolled patients were stratified into two cohorts based on the 28-day mortality rate: a survival group and a mortality group. A non-parametric statistical test was employed to compare the CRT, PI, and mottling score between the two groups. Furthermore, the predictive value of these microcirculatory indicators for mortality in septic shock patients was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. This methodology allowed for the evaluation of the prognostic accuracy of CRT, PI, and mottling score as indicators for mortality in the context of septic shock. ResultsThe vasoactive drug dose, PI, LAC, mottling score, and CRT upon admission in the survival group were significantly better than those in the mortality group at hour 6 of treatment, hour 24 of treatment, and hour 48 of treatment (P < 0.05). The predictive value of the three microcirculatory indicators at various time points was highest for the Perfusion Index (PI) at 48 h of treatment, the mottling score at 24 h of treatment, and the Capillary Refill Time (CRT) upon admission. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) for PI at 48 h of treatment was 0.941 (0.885–0.996), with a sensitivity of 90.9 % and a specificity of 94.1 %. For the mottling score at 24 h of treatment, the AUC was 0.889 (0.805–0.972), with a sensitivity of 82.4 % and a specificity of 88.6 %. The AUC for CRT upon admission was 0.872 (0.788–0.956), with a sensitivity of 91.2 % and a specificity of 77.3 %. Among the three indicators: PI, mottling score, and CRT, PI at hour 48 of treatment had the highest predictive value for the prognosis of patients with septic shock. ConclusionMicrocirculatory indicators have specific predictive value for the prognosis of patients with septic shock.

Safety, Efficacy, and Feasibility of Nebulized Long-Acting Bronchodilators vs Short-Acting Bronchodilators in Hospitalized Patients With Acute Exacerbations of COPD: A Phase IV, Randomized, Parallel-Group Clinical Trial

BackgroundLong-acting bronchodilators are preferred over short-acting bronchodilators in patients with stable COPD, but prospective studies are needed to determine the safety and efficacy of nebulized long-acting bronchodilators in hospitalized patients with exacerbations of COPD (ECOPD). MethodsWe conducted a prospective, randomized, parallel-group study comparing a nebulized formoterol/revefenacin combination with an albuterol/ipratropium combination among n = 60 hospitalized patients (n = 30 in each group) with ECOPD who tested negative for COVID-19. Treatments were administered q12 to 24 hrs (formoterol/revefenacin), or q6 hrs (albuterol/ipratropium) by jet nebulizers for up to 7 days. Safety and efficacy assessments were recorded on days 1, 3, and 7, or at hospital discharge. Assessment of dyspnea by the Modified Borg dyspnea scale was the primary outcome. Data were analyzed with parametric or non-parametric statistical tests, and generalized estimating equations with an identity link function were used to analyze differences in the two groups. Statistical significance was assumed at an unadjusted two-sided alpha value of 0.05. ResultsParticipants’ mean age was 63.2 (SD 9.30) years, and 39 (65.0%) were current smokers. Patients' age, sex, race, smoking history, body mass index, Charlson Comorbidity Index, supplemental oxygen requirements, and length of hospital stay were similar in the two groups (p>0.05 for all). Patients receiving formoterol/revefenacin had similar Modified Borg dyspnea scores (p = 0.95) and required fewer total drug doses (P<0.001), but there was a non-significant trend for more frequent rescue treatments (p=0.08) compared to those receiving albuterol/ipratropium. There were no serious adverse events or treatment failures in either group. ConclusionIn non-ventilated hospitalized patients with ECOPD, the institution of nebulized formoterol/revefenacin in combination within 24 to 36 hours of hospital admission provided convenient dosing and required fewer drug doses to achieve comparable efficacy and safety with the standard short-acting nebulized albuterol/ipratropium combination.

Anatomical Posterior Acetabular Plate Versus Conventional Reconstruction Plates for Acetabular Posterior Wall Fractures: A Comparative Study.

Background: Functional recovery following the surgical fixation of acetabular posterior wall fractures remains a challenge. This study compares outcomes of posterior wall fracture reconstruction using an anatomical posterior acetabular plate (APAP) versus conventional reconstruction plates. Methods: Forty patients with acetabular fractures involving the posterior wall or column underwent surgery, with 20 treated using APAPs (APAP group) and 20 with conventional pelvic reconstruction plates (control group). Baseline patient characteristics, intraoperative blood loss and time, reduction quality, postoperative function, and postoperative complications were compared using appropriate non-parametric statistical tests. A general linear model for repeated measures analysis of variance was employed to analyze trends in functional recovery. Results: No significant differences were observed in baseline characteristics. APAP significantly reduced surgical time by 40 min (186.5 ± 51.0 versus 225.0 ± 47.7, p =0.004) and blood loss (695 ± 393 versus 930 ± 609, p = 0.049) compared to conventional plates. At 3 and 6 months following surgery, the APAP group exhibited higher functional scores (modified Merle d'Aubigné scores 10 ± 1.8 versus 7.8 ± 1.4, p < 0.001; 13.4 ± 2.8 versus 10.1 ± 2.1, p = 0.001), converging with the control group by 12 months (modified Merle d'Aubigné scores 14.2 ± 2.6 versus 12.7 ± 2.6, p = 0.072; OHS 31.6 ± 12.3 versus 30.3 ± 10.1, p = 0.398). Radiologically, the APAP group demonstrated superior outcomes (p = 0.047). Complication and conversion rates to hip arthroplasty did not significantly differ between groups (10% versus 15%, p = 0.633). Conclusions: The use of an APAP in reconstructing the posterior acetabulum significantly reduces surgical time, decreases intraoperative blood loss, and leads to earlier functional recovery compared to conventional reconstruction plates. The APAP provides stable fixation of the posterior wall and ensures the durable maintenance of reduction, ultimately yielding favorable surgical outcomes.

Synthesis of agro-industrial wastes/sodium alginate/bovine gelatin-based polysaccharide hydrogel beads: Characterization and application as controlled-release microencapsulated fertilizers

Synthesis of novel agro-industrial wastes/sodium alginate/bovine gelatin-based polysaccharide hydrogel beads, micromeritic/morphometric characteristics of the prepared formulations, greenhouse trials using controlled-release microencapsulated fertilizers, and acute fish toxicity testing were conducted simultaneously for the first time within the scope of an integrated research. In the present analysis, for the first time, 16 different morphometric features, and 32 disinct plant growth traits of the prepared composite beads were explored in detail within the framework of a comprehensive digital image analysis. The hydrogel beads composed of 19 different agro-industrial wastes/materials were successfully synthesized using the ionotropic external gelation technique and CaCl2 as cross-linker. According to micromeritic characteristics, the ionotropically cross-linked beads exhibited 77.86 ± 3.55 % yield percentage and 2.679 ± 0.397 mm average particle size. The dried microbeads showed a good swelling ratio (270.02 ± 80.53 %) and had acceptable flow properties according to Hausner's ratio (1.136 ± 0.028), Carr's index (11.94 ± 2.17 %), and angle of repose (25.03° ± 5.33°) values. The settling process of the prepared microbeads was observed in the intermediate flow regime, as indicated by the average particle Reynolds numbers (169.17 ± 82.81). Experimental findings and non-parametric statistical tests reveal that dried fertilizer matrices demonstrated noteworthy performance on the cultivation of red hot chili pepper plant (Capsicum annuum var. fasciculatum) according to the results of greenhouse trials. Surface morphologies of the best-performing fertilizer matrices were also characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Moreover, the static fish bioassay experiment confirmed that no abnormalities and acute toxic reactions occurred in shortfin molly fish (Poecilia sphenops) fed with dried leaves of red hot chili pepper plants grown with formulated fertilizers. This study showcased a pioneering investigation into the synthesis of microcapsules using synthesized hydrogel beads along with digital image processing for bio-waste management and sustainable agro-application.

A hierarchical heterogeneous ant colony optimization based oversampling algorithm using feature similarity for classification of imbalanced data

Imbalanced data classification is one of the challenging problems in machine learning. Oversampling is a promising technique that generates synthetic minority instances to balance the dataset. Inappropriate minority instances generated may deteriorate the performance of the classifier. Majority of the oversampling algorithms create new minority instances by choosing nearest neighbors for random interpolation. However, these methods do not provide new information to the dataset and therefore standard classifiers do not show good performance on such datasets. Therefore, it is necessary to generate diverse minority class instances to increase the performance of the classifier. Since, every feature of each minority class instance contribute valuable information, generating synthetic instances from the features of all minority instances would produce diverse minority instances, thereby increasing the performance of the classifier. This paper proposes a Hierarchical Heterogeneous Ant Colony Optimization based oversampling algorithm using Feature Similarity (HHACO-FSOTe) for generation of synthetic minority instances. Instead of choosing few neighbors for interpolation, the proposal considers all minority instances for generation of synthetic instances. HHACO-FSOTe generates new feature values by computing the minimum absolute difference between the features of a given minority instance and the corresponding features of the remaining minority instances. The features in the dataset are distributed among the ant agents enabling parallelism, thereby reducing the time taken for oversampling. HHACO-FSOTe do not require parameter tuning or training. The proposal is evaluated on 41 low dimensional, 11 high dimensional and 8 noisy datasets. Experiments reveal that HHACO-FSOTe is competent with the state-of-art oversampling techniques. Results were validated using non-parametric statistical tests.

Assessment of Microplastic Pollution in Fresh Fish and Pindang Fish and its Potential Health Hazards in Coastal Communities of Banyuwangi Regency, Indonesia

This study aimed to analyze the microplastic contamination of fresh and pindang fish and its health impact on the coast of Muncar, Banyuwangi Regency, Indonesia. In this study, a total of 115 respondents participated, providing questionnaire data on their fish consumption habits and health problems. Subsequently, spearman’s correlation coefficient, a non-parametric statistical test, was used to analyze the questionnaire data. This study also included 100 samples of marine fish, consisting of 89 fresh fish and 11 pindang fish from various types of marine species. The content of microplastic polymers detected through FTIR (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) was around 3-5 microplastic polymers/fish samples, and the most dominant were Polyethylene, Polyester, Polycaprolactam (Nylon 6) and Polyamide. This study showed that 94 percent of fish samples contained microplastics and only 6 percent of samples did not contain microplastics. The intensity of pindang fish consumption was positively correlated with respondents’ health symptoms and problems. Subsequently, implementing effective waste management systems and educational programs in the coastal areas is crucial in reducing the pollution of seawater resulting from inadequate waste disposal practices.

Nonparametric Statistics on Magnetic Properties at the Footpoints of Erupting Magnetic Flux Ropes

It is under debate whether the magnetic field in the solar atmosphere carries neutralized electric currents, in particular, whether a magnetic flux rope (MFR), which is considered the core structure of coronal mass ejections, carries neutralized electric currents. Recently Wang et al. (2023) studied magnetic flux and electric current measured at the footpoints of 28 eruptive MFRs from 2010 to 2015. Because of the small sample size, no rigorous statistical analysis has been done. Here, we include nine more events from 2016 to 2023 and perform a series of nonparametric statistical tests at a significance level of 5%. The tests confirm that there exist no significant differences in magnetic properties between conjugated footpoints of the same MFR, which justifies the method of identifying the MFR footpoints through coronal dimming. The tests demonstrate that there exist no significant differences between MFRs with preeruption dimming and those with only posteruption dimming. However, there is a medium level of association between MFRs carrying substantial net current and those producing preeruption dimming, which can be understood by the Lorentz self-force of the current channel. The tests also suggest that in estimating the magnetic twist of MFRs, it is necessary to take into account the spatially inhomogeneous distribution of electric current density and magnetic field.

Effect of a whole-group intervention on children’s participation in interactive book reading

This study examined the effects of an SLP-delivered whole-class interactive book reading intervention and a professional development program on children’s self-initiated participation. Eleven kindergarten teachers and the children in their classes participated in this quasi-experimental study. They were filmed during book reading at pre- and post-intervention, and follow-up. Children’s types of spontaneous comments appeared to be more diverse after the intervention, and the types that increased or emerged were consistent with the language targets of the interactive book reading. Nonparametric statistical tests were conducted. Significant changes were found in the number of hands raised by children to make a spontaneous comment and in the number of spontaneous comments after the intervention and at follow-up. Results for child-initiated interaction sequences were mitigated. This study invites school-based SLPs to foster children’s self-initiated participation in their tier-1 intervention and to support teachers in using children’s spontaneous comments to further scaffold children’s learning.

Spinal anaesthetic needle prick pain is an unpleasant experience that results in losses from spinal anaesthesia, so it needs to be treated. Deep breathing relaxation techniques and lavender aromatherapy are effective non-pharmacological pain management methods. In addition to increasing comfort, reducing pain can also provide convenience and speed in the process of injecting spinal anesthetic needles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of deep breathing relaxation techniques and lavender aromatherapy on the pain intensity of spinal anaesthetic needle pricks at Kardinah Hospital, Tegal. This study employed a quasi-experiment research method, utilizing a two-group post-test design. The sampling technique used purposive sampling with a total of 72 respondents who were divided into groups of deep breathing relaxation techniques and lavender aromatherapy. Quality of Life Assessment in Romanian Patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Undergoing Nusinersen Treatment.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), identified over a century ago, is characterized by severe muscle wasting and early mortality. Despite its rarity, the high carrier frequency of the responsible genetic mutations and the variability in its manifestations make it a significant research focus. This prospective cross-sectional descriptive study evaluated health-related quality of life (HRQoL) across eight health domains in 43 Romanian SMA patients treated with nusinersen, using the SF-36 questionnaire to analyze influencing factors. The survey was conducted online with informed consent, and the data were analyzed using MedCalc software, employing both parametric and non-parametric statistical tests for accurate interpretation. The results revealed significant variations in HRQoL. Most patients were non-ambulatory (74.4%), reflecting SMA's impact on mobility. Urban residents reported better outcomes, particularly in physical functioning (p = 0.014), which may be attributed to improved access to healthcare services. Younger participants (under 14), represented by proxy responses, noted better general health (p = 0.0072) and emotional well-being (p = 0.0217) compared to older participants. These findings suggest that younger patients or their proxies perceive a better health status, highlighting the need for age-specific approaches in SMA management and the potential optimistic bias associated with proxy reporting on perceived health outcomes.
