Numerical solutions for magneto-convective boundary layer slip flow from a nonlinear stretching sheet with wall transpiration and thermal radiation effects

A mathematical model is presented for magnetohydrodynamic viscous incompressible flow of an electrically conducting Newtonian polymeric fluid from a moving permeable horizontal stretching sheet with variable magnetic field, momentum and thermal slip boundary conditions. The emerging nonlinear ordinary differential boundary value problem is solved numerically by the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth-fifth order numerical method in Maple symbolic software. The effects of the governing parameters on the dimensionless stream function, dimensionless flow velocity and the dimensionless temperature have been investigated, displayed graphically and discussed. It is found that greater momentum slip and magnetic field parameters reduce the dimensionless velocity. It is further observed that higher values of Prandtl number, thermal slip, and conductionradiation parameter (weaker radiation contribution) reduce the dimensionless temperature whilst stronger magnetic field increases the temperature due to the supplementary work expended in dragging the polymer against the action of the magnetic field which is dissipated as heat. Comparisons of numerical results with previous published results show an excellent agreement. The study finds applications in electro-conductive polymer (ECP) processing systems.

The stress state of a thick-walled shell with allowance for contact with a hydrogen-containing medium

Numerical and experimental methods are used to solve a multidisciplinary problem on determining the stress state of a steel shell of revolution under mechanical loading and thermal effect with allowance for its contact with a hydrogen-containing medium. The study uses a well-developed mathematical tool for solving heat conduction problems in order to solve the problem of hydrogen diffusion into metal. The effective stresses and their invariants are determined by solving the nonlinear boundary value problem of thermoplasticity of a thick-walled shell of revolution in a three-dimensional formulation. The study takes into account the experimentally found effect of changes in the mechanical properties of steel affected by hydrogen. The correctness of the proposed method and the performed calculations is quantitatively estimated by comparison with a well-known problem having an analytical solution. The paper shows that it is possible and necessary to take into account the change in mechanical properties when determining the stress state of steel structures operating in contact with a hydrogen-containing medium.

A Signed Maximum Principle for Boundary Value Problems for Riemann–Liouville Fractional Differential Equations with Analogues of Neumann or Periodic Boundary Conditions

Sufficient conditions are obtained for a signed maximum principle for boundary value problems for Riemann–Liouville fractional differential equations with analogues of Neumann or periodic boundary conditions in neighborhoods of simple eigenvalues. The primary objective is to exhibit four specific boundary value problems for which the sufficient conditions can be verified. To show an application of the signed maximum principle, a method of upper and lower solutions coupled with monotone methods is developed to obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of a maximal solution and a minimal solution of a nonlinear boundary value problem. A specific example is provided to show that sufficient conditions for the nonlinear problem can be realized.

Employing CNPS and CPS approaches to calculate numerical roots of ninth-order linear and nonlinear boundary value problems

The extremely accurate findings of ninth-order linear and nonlinear BVPs are described in this paper. CNPS and CPS are used to find out the numerical roots of linear and nonlinear, ninth-order BVPs. The proposed methods transform the ninth-order BVPs into a system of linear equations. The algorithms developed in this study not only provide approximate solutions to the BVPs using CNPS and CPS, but they also estimate the derivatives from the first to the ninth-order of the analytical solution simultaneously. These approaches are implemented across five diverse problems, showcasing the effectiveness of these techniques by utilizing step sizes of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. In order to gauge the accuracy of the methods, a comparison is drawn between the outcomes and the exact solutions, which are then presented in tabular and graphical format. The precision of these techniques is demonstrated through a detailed investigation and is found to be superior to the CBS, the Petrov–Galerkin Method (PGM) using Splines functions as basis functions and Septic B Splines functions as weight functions, the collocation method for ninth-order BVPs by Quintic B Splines and Sextic B Splines as evidenced by the comparison of AEs of CPS and CNPS with these alternative methods.

Thermal Analysis of a Casson Boundary Layer Flow over a Penetrable Stretching Porous Wedge

This work aims to analyze the Casson thermal boundary layer flow over an expanding wedge in a porous medium with convective boundary conditions and ohmic heating. Moreover, the effects of porosity and viscous dissipation are studied in detail and included in the analysis. The importance of this study is due to its applications in biomedical engineering where the analysis of behavior of non-Newtonian blood flow in arteries and veins is desired. Within the context of blood flow, it is also applicable to many other fields, for instance, radiative therapy, MHD generators, soil machines, melt-spinning, and insulation processes. The modeled problem is a set of PDEs, which is nondimensionalized to derive a nonlinear boundary value problem (BVP). The obtained BVP is solved using the shooting technique, endowed with the order four Runge-Kutta and Newton methods. The impact of different parameters on the momentum and temperature fields is investigated along with two important parameters of physical significance, i.e., the Nusselt number and the surface drag force. Results are validated, and an excellent agreement is seen for the parameters of interest using MATLAB built-in function bvp4c. A significant finding is that by increasing the Casson liquid parameter, the velocity decreases as the wedge expands quicker than the free stream velocity at R=2. However, the velocity increases for the case when R=0.1. A decrease in the Darcy number increases the temperature profile. Furthermore, the convective parameter accelerated the heat transmission rate, and a rise in the Prandtl number thickens the thermal boundary layer. The findings of this investigation contribute to problems in fluid dynamics and heat transfer that involve studying the behavior of a non-Newtonian fluid with Casson rheological properties near a solid porous wedge surface.

An explicit–implicit Generalized Finite Difference scheme for a parabolic–elliptic density-suppressed motility system

In this work, a Generalized Finite Difference (GFD) scheme is presented for effectively computing the numerical solution of a parabolic–elliptic system modeling a bacterial strain with density-suppressed motility. The GFD method is a meshless method known for its simplicity for solving non-linear boundary value problems over irregular geometries. The paper first introduces the basic elements of the GFD method, and then an explicit–implicit scheme is derived. The convergence of the method is proven under a bound for the time step, and an algorithm is provided for its computational implementation. Finally, some examples are considered comparing the results obtained with a regular mesh and an irregular cloud of points.

Chains with Connections of Diffusion and Advective Types

The local dynamics of a system of oscillators with a large number of elements and with diffusive- and advective-type couplings containing a large delay are studied. Critical cases in the problem of the stability of the zero equilibrium state are singled out, and it is shown that all of them have infinite dimensions. Applying special methods of infinite normalization, we construct quasinormal forms, namely, nonlinear boundary value problems of the parabolic type, whose nonlocal dynamics determine the behavior of the solutions of the initial system in a small neighborhood of the equilibrium state. These quasinormal forms contain either two or three spatial variables, which emphasizes the complexity of the dynamical properties of the original problem.

Triple diffusive free magneto-convection of electro-conductive nanofluid from a vertical stretching sheet

In the present investigation, an analysis is carried out to study the MHD triple diffusive free thermo-solutal convection boundary layer flow of an electro-conductive nanofluid flow over a vertical stretching sheet. This problem is relevant to magnetic nanomaterials fabrication operations in which multiple species in addition to nanoparticles are present. In addition to the nanoparticle diffusion, two different salts (species) having different properties are considered. A variable magnetic field is applied transverse to the vertical sheet. It is assumed that the surface is in contact with the hot magnetic nanofluid at a temperature which provides a variable heat transfer coefficient. Buongiorno’s model is employed for the nanofluid. It is also assumed that the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation is valid and the mixture of nanofluid and salts is homogenous and is in local thermal equilibrium. In addition, the thermal energy equation features cross-diffusion (Soret and Dufour) terms for both components of salts having different concentration. Appropriate similarity transformations are deployed to render the model non-dimensional. The emerging transformed dimensionless non-linear non-dimensional ordinary differential boundary value problem is solved with the robust bvp4c method in MATLAB. Validation with previous studies has been included for special cases of the general model. The simulations show that the addition of nanoparticles and salts, strongly modifies Temperature and nanoparticle and salt 1 and 2 concentrations. With stronger magnetic field the velocity is suppressed as is momentum boundary layer thickness whereas temperatures are boosted.

Analysis of heat and mass transfer of a non-linear convective heat generating fluid flow in a porous medium with variable viscosity

The present study addresses the significance of analyzing the heat and mass transfer characteristics of a non-linear convective fluid flow featuring variable viscosity within a porous medium. Our focus lies on understanding the impact of varying viscosity on the hydromagnetic coupling stress, particularly in the presence of internal heat generation. The fluid is confined within a porous medium, and convection cooling takes place at both wall of the fluid. A key assumption in our investigation is the nonlinearity nature of the buoyancy force, specifically when there is a substantial difference in temperature and concentration within the fluid and its surroundings, the buoyancy force becomes quadratic. The exploration of couple stress fluids, alongside considerations of temperature-dependent internal heat generation and mass transfer, contributes to advancing our understanding of thermal system performance. By accounting for nonlinearity in density, temperature, and concentration, the research aims to provide more accurate results than previous linear models, crucial for optimizing energy consumption in practical applications such as nuclear reactors and heat exchangers. Dealing with this type of problem often pose significant challenges, as they often lack analytical solutions, necessitating the use of more advanced numerical methods or approximation techniques. We employ Spectral Quasilinearisation Method (SQLM) to solve the coupled non-linear boundary value problems (PDE) arising from the model, momentum equation, energy equation, concentration equation, and entropy generation. The obtained results are then validated using the Runge–Kutta method and a good agreement is achieved. The findings for the dimensionless velocity, temperature, mass concentration and entropy generation are presented in graphics and in table manner, and effects of controlling parameters are extensively explained. The results highlight that an increase in variable viscosity leads to an enhancement in the velocity profile, while simultaneously reducing the temperature in the system. Furthermore, increments in the non-linear convection parameter and coupling stress parameter result in an appreciation of the velocity profile, temperature profile, and entropy generation rate.

Numerical Solution of Eighth Order Two Point Boundary Value Problems by Taylor Series Method

A Taylor series method which is taught at undergraduate levels and which has been hitherto used for the solution of initial value problem is successfully used in this work for the solutions of eighth-order two point boundary-value problems. The method is based on successive differentiation of the governing equation to obtain high order derivatives and then evaluated at the boundary point x=a. The solution is expressed inform a Taylor series with the unknown coefficients at a point x=a. By applying boundary conditions at x=b in the Taylor series solution, the system of unknown coefficient is obtained. After solving the system, then unknown coefficient are determined. The procedure is applied on both linear and nonlinear boundary-value problems. A comparison of the results obtained by the present method with results obtained by other methods reveals that the present method is simple, effective and also is in good agreement with the previous result and exact solution as showing in the tables and figures.

Eleventh Degree Polynomial Series Solution Approach of Special Non-linear Fourth Order Boundary Value Problems

In this paper a new eleventh degree polynomial series solution approach is developed for the solution of special non-linear fourth order boundary value problems. The method consist first of obtaining a linear differentials system of twelve equations from the boundary conditions, governing equation and its three successive derivatives which were evaluated at boundary points. Secondly we assume the approximate solution in the form of a polynomial of degree eleventh with twelve unknown coefficients. To determine the unknown coefficients we incorporate the assumed solution into linear differentials systems of twelve equations which results into a linear systems of twelve equations with twelve unknown and which can be solve uniquely. It is clear from the tables and figures that the method is in good agreement with the exact and with some existing results in the literatures. Also it can be seen from example 3.3 that the exact solution is reproduced which is an added advantage of the method.

Computational analysis of magnetized Casson liquid stretching flow adjacent to a porous medium with Joule heating, stratification, multiple slip and chemical reaction aspects

This article aims to investigate the characteristics of thermo-solutal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) non-Newtonian smart coating boundary layer flow of a stretching substrate adjacent to a porous medium, considering the influence of chemical reactions and thermal radiation subject to a transverse static magnetic field. A non-Darcy drag force model is deployed to capture both Darcy bulk drag and inertial Forchheimer (quadratic) drag effects. A diffusion flux model is deployed for radiative heat transfer. The Casson viscoplastic model has been utilized to simulate rheological characteristics. Due to polymeric slip effects, three slip phenomena are included at the wall (hydrodynamic, thermal and concentration) in the formulation. Furthermore, viscous dissipation and Ohmic heating (Joule dissipation) are also included. Robust scaling similarity variables are deployed to transform the governing partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations. Subsequently, the emerging dimensionless coupled nonlinear boundary value problem is solved utilizing the Bvp4c method in MATLAB version 2022. This numerical approach allows for a logical parametric examination of all key control parameters on the transport phenomena, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the system behavior. Validation with previous studies is included. Detailed graphical and tabular computations are included for velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number, for the influence of Darcian parameter, Forchheimer inertial parameter, mixed convection, velocity (momentum) slip, magnetic number, Casson parameter, nonlinear thermal convection parameter, nonlinear concentration convection parameter, radiation parameter, thermal stratification parameter, Prandtl number, heat source/sink parameter, Eckert number, thermal slip parameter, Schmidt number, chemical reaction, solutal stratification parameter and solutal slip parameter. Detailed interpretation of the physics associated with these multiple effects is included. The simulations provide further insight into the transport characteristics of electromagnetic viscoplastic coating material manufacturing.

Existence results for a class of four point nonlinear singular BVP arising in thermal explosion in a spherical vessel

In this article, the following class of four-point singular non-linear boundary value problem (NLBVP) is considered which arises in thermal explosion in a spherical vessel −(s2y′(s))′=s2f(s,y,s2y′),s∈(0,1),y′(0)=0,y(1)=δ1y(η1)+δ2y(η2), where Ω=(0,1)×R2, f:Ω→R is continuous on Ω as well as satisfy Lipschitz condition with respect to y and y′ (one sided), δ1, δ2>0 are constants, and 0<η1≤η2<1. We provide an estimation of the region of existence of a solution of above singular NLBVP. We extend the theory of monotone iterative technique (MIT) which provides computable monotone sequences that converge to the solutions of the nonlinear four point BVPs.

Existence of transonic shocks in a cylindrical nozzle with given exit normal momentums

In this paper, we study the existence of transonic shocks in a cylindrical nozzle. More precisely, given the compatible outer normal momentum at the exit of a cylindrical nozzle, there exists a transonic shock solution such that the incoming supersonic flow is compressed to some subsonic flow. The shock position is uniquely determined by the exit normal momentum when we fix one point of the shock. This problem can be reduced to solve a nonlinear free boundary value problem for a hyperbolic–elliptic coupled system and the key ingredient is to solve a second‐order quasilinear elliptic equation with a nonlocal term by the method of separation of variables.

On the problem of solvability of nonlinear boundary value problems for shallow isotropic shells of Timoshenko type in isometric coordinates

The solvability of a boundary value problem for a system, which describes the equilibrium state of elastic shallow inhomogeneous isotropic shells with loose edges referred to isometric coordinates in the Timoshenko shear model and consists of five non-linear second-order partial differential equations under given non-linear boundary conditions, is studied. The boundary value problem is reduced to a nonlinear operator equation for generalized displacements in Sobolev space, the solvability of this equation is established with the help of the contraction mapping principle.
