Cellulose-based Co[sbnd]Fe LDH composite as a nano-adsorbent for sulfamethoxazole and cefixime residues: Evaluation of performance, green metrics and cytotoxicity

The increase in antibiotic residues poses a serious threat to ecological and aquatic environments, necessitating the development of cost-effective, convenient, and recyclable adsorbents. In our study, we used cellulose-based layered double hydroxide (LDH) as an efficient adsorbent and nanocarrier for both sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and cefixime (CFX) residues due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility. Chemical processes are measured according to green chemistry metrics to identify which features adhere to the principles. A GREEnness Assessment (ESA), Analytical GREEnness Preparation (AGREEprep), and Analytical Eco-Scale Assessments (ESA) were used to assess the suitability of the proposed analytical method. We extensively analyzed the synthesized CoFe LDH/cellulose before and after the adsorption processes using XRD, FTIR, and SEM. We investigated the factors affecting the adsorption process, such as pH, adsorbent dose, concentrations of SMX and CFX and time. We studied six nonlinear adsorption isotherm models at pH 5 using CoFe LDH, which showed maximum adsorption capacities (qmax) of 272.13 mg/g for SMX and 208.00 mg/g for CFX. Kinetic studies were also conducted. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was performed on Vero cells in direct contact with LDH nanocomposites to evaluate the cytotoxicity and side effects of cellulose-based CoFe LDH. The cellulose-based CoFe LDH nanocomposite demonstrated excellent cytocompatibility and less cytotoxic effects on the tested cell line. These results validate the potential use of these unique LDH-based cellulose cytocompatible biomaterials for water treatment applications. The cost of the prepared adsorbents was investigated.

Identification of structural and optical properties and adsorption performance of (Cd0.4Ni0.4Mn0.2)Fe2-xRuxO4 nanoparticles for the removal of Congo red dye

In the field of industrial wastewater treatment, the application of highly efficient methods such as adsorption is crucial for effectively eliminating dangerous pollutants before effluent discharge. Ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as promising candidates for the efficient and sustainable removal of dyes from wastewater. Therefore, the synthesis, characterization, and application of (Cd0.4Ni0.4Mn0.2)Fe2-xRuxO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) NPs as adsorbents for the removal of Congo Red (CR) dye, is reported in this study. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis has confirmed the purity of the samples with a very small amount of hematite phase. The prepared NPs have pseudo-spherical morphology and average particle size in the range of 12–17 nm. Furthermore, the elemental compositions, estimated from the energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) measurements, indicate the homogenous distribution of elements and the substitution of the Fe3+ host ions by the Ru3+ dopant. As the Ru content increases from 0.00 to 0.04, SBET increases from 52.39 to 78.34 m2/g, respectively. Furthermore, the pore diameter, ranging between 12.71 and 18.38 nm, reveals the mesoporous nature of the prepared samples. The direct and indirect bandgap energy, calculated from UV–vis spectroscopy analysis, is in the range of 3.049–3.232 eV and 1.894–2.642 eV, respectively. The adsorption performance of the prepared NPs for the removal of CR dye solution was investigated by varying the contact time, adsorbent amount, pH, and reaction temperature. The adsorption process follows a second-order kinetic model and the NPs with x = 0.015 revealed the highest adsorption rate with a rate constant k2 = 2.7 × 10−3 g.mg−1.min−1. The optimum experimental conditions, achieved in the presence of 80 mg of (Cd0.4Ni0.4Mn0.2)Fe1.985Ru0.015O4 NPs at 308 K and in the acidic medium at pH = 3.45, result in the removal of 87.5 % of CR dye after 60 min. After applying several non-linear adsorption isotherm models, mainly Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms, the experimental data were well-fitted with the Temkin isotherm model. The strong interactive force between CR and (Cd0.4Ni0.4Mn0.2)Fe1.985Ru0.015O4 nanoparticles is revealed from the high value of bT knowing that bT = 182.91 J.mol−1.

Confirmation, modelling and mechanisms of fiberglass preg-robbing during printed circuit board leaching

Possibility of adsorption losses of target metal ions to fiberglass particles in the printed circuit board leaching pulp have been raised. Reports on behavior of fiberglass particles in this leaching pulp are rare. In this study, using clean fiberglass powder in amine leach solutions of waste printed circuit board of different concentrations, copper and zinc concentrations changes were monitored over time to confirm metal losses to the particles. The interaction was studied against various adsorption isotherm and kinetic models. Of the seven non-linear adsorption isotherm models employed, Sips adsorption isotherm model best fitted the experimental data with R2 of 0.9999 for Cu and 0.9848 for zinc. For the five non-linear adsorption kinetic models studied, Avrami model fitted the experimental data best with R2 of 0.9617 and 0.9503 for copper and zinc, respectively. This implies adsorption losses to fiberglass particles involve both physisorption and chemisorption. Adsorption capacity of the fiberglass powder in this instance was determined to be 0.6 mg/g for Cu and 0.035 mg/g for Zn. Process improvements based on these insights will be needed to achieve cleaner leach residue and improved recoveries.

Effective single and contest carcinogenic dyes adsorption onto A-zeolite/bacterial cellulose composite membrane: Adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics

This study reports loading of A-zeolite particles on the bacterial cellulose membrane for single and binary carcinogenic dye uptake from the aqueous solution. The bio based membrane was obtained using Gluconobacter Oxydans NRRL 759 in liquid culture medium. Meanwhile, the incorporation of zeolite particles within the bacterial cellulose matrix and on its surface was implemented via in-situ synthesis. The crystallite structure and the morphology of obtained composite membrane were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) hyphenated with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The surface characteristics were intensively investigated by N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm, SBET, pore size distribution, and zeta potential. The results indicate that the treatment of bacterial cellulose with zeolite particles reflected two folds in surface area and three folds in the point of zero charge (pHzpc 6.7) compared with un-modified one. The produced composite membrane was also examined against removal of sole cationic methylene blue "MB", and anionic Congo-Red "CR" or in binary solutions included "MB" with Malachite green "MG" or "CR" with different percentages through batch adsorption technique. Different parameters affecting the adsorption process, such as dye concentration, adsorbent type, contact time, temperature, and pH, were optimized. The highest removal was recorded at optimum conditions for sole "MB" dye (99.2%), "CR" dye (81%), binary mixed "2MB/1CR" (96% after 15 min, 91% after 12 h, respectively), and "2MB/1MG" (98.6% after 30 min). Moreover, linear and nonlinear adsorption isotherm models confirmed that MB adsorption and CR obeys Freundlich isotherm model. Also, the kinetic studies revealed that the dyes' adsorption on the composite membrane could be clarified using linear and nonlinear forms of pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intra-particle diffusion models. Thermodynamic findings emphasized the endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process as the adsorbent/ adsorbate physical interaction decreased the entropy. Eventually, the recyclability test revealed that the composite matrix exhibits excellent removal efficiency up to 5 recycles. The primary adsorption mechanism was proposed and confirmed with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Finally, the unprecedented composite membrane can be considered as an economically distinguished adsorbent for the removal of not only sol dyes but also mixtures of anionic and cationic dyes.

Batch screening of weak base ion exchange resins for optimized extraction of acetic acid under fermentation conditions

Acetic acid is a valuable chemical with high demand for applications in food, pharmaceutical, polymer and other industries. A total of 10% acetate in the world is produced through bio-based processes such as fermentation. Such processes require cost-effective separation technologies to make the bio-acetate product competitive on the markets. Ion exchange resins can efficiently extract acetate from the fermentation broths and due to their re-usability after regeneration, can be cost-effective with lower operation and maintenance costs. To facilitate better process design, kinetics of acetate adsorption by six different basic ion exchange resins: Amberlite FPA-53, Amberlite IRA-67, Dowex-66, Dowex Marathon WBA-2, Amberlite IRA-96 and Amberlite IRA-400; was studied using well-known linear and non-linear adsorption isotherm models. The study showed that Amberlite FPA-53 (213 mg/g wet resin) had the highest acetate adsorption capability followed by Amberlite IRA-67 (202 mg/g wet resin) and Dowex-66 (191 mg/g wet resin). Of the tested models, the acetate adsorption onto these resins was found to fit well with the Langmuir model. It was found that there was a significant effect of acetic acid concentration and pH on acetate adsorption using gel-type and macroporous resins, especially at high initial concentrations of acetate in the broth. The study further showed, that under fermentation conditions (pH of 5–7), the adsorption capacity of all the resins was lower than at the pKa for acetic acid.

Fe3O4@date seeds powder: a sustainable nanocomposite material for wastewater treatment

This study reports synthesis and utilization of Fe3O4@date seeds powder to remove methylene blue from water. The adsorbent has been produced by a simple co-precipitation method, in which Fe3O4 nanoparticles are grown on date seeds powder. Different chemical functional groups were found on surface of the prepared bio-adsorbent. The size of the grown Fe3O4 nanoparticles was observed to be around 5 nm and confirmed their magnetic character via VSM measurement. Several non-linear adsorption isotherm models such as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson were obtained for methylene blue dye adsorption, and it was observed that the Freundlich isotherm is the best fitted model. The monolayer adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm was 76.652 mg g−1 at 27 °C. The kinetic models (pseudo first order and pseudo second order) were also studied for methylene blue adsorption and the pseudo second order is the best fitted model in the present investigation. The methylene blue adsorption isotherm and kinetic study suggested that the current adsorption process was carried out by electrostatic interactions between the functional groups on the surface of the Fe3O4@date seeds powder and the dye, and the rate determining step was intraparticle diffusion. This entire study has been systematically explained through comparative study of literature. This study proves that the developed adsorbent is bio-degradable, inexpensive, and efficient for dye removal, which recommends increasing the production of natural bio-adsorbents in the future for water purification.

Adsorption of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid over Fe–Zr-based metal-organic frameworks: Synthesis, characterization, kinetics, and mechanism studies

The removal of herbicides remains challenging because of the complex synthesis process and poor performance of the adsorbent. Herein, we proposed a facile hydrothermal method for the synthesis of Fe–Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (FZM), which featured porous structure and high surface area of 1003 m3 g−1 with abundant functional groups and unique surface charge. The maximum adsorption capacity of FZM toward 2,4-D was 357.14 mg g−1 after nonlinear adsorption isotherm models were fitted. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of 2,4-D on the FZM conforms to Langmuir isothermal model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model respectively the adsorption mechanism was discussed based on the characterization, FT-IR and XPS analysis showed that the adsorption mechanism was mainly attributed to the hydrogen bonds between molecules, π-π conjugates and electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, the reuse performance and regeneration method of FZM were optimized through experiments. FZM could maintain 77% efficiency even after multiple cycles, and was less affected by the complex matrix. These results provide new insights into the adsorption of pesticides in water by novel MOF.

Synthesis of DMEA-Grafted Anion Exchange Membrane for Adsorptive Discharge of Methyl Orange from Wastewaters.

This manuscript describes the synthesis of dimethylethanolamine (DMEA)-grafted anion exchange membrane (AEM) by incorporating dimethylethanolamine as ion-exchange content into the polymer matrix via the solution casting method. The synthesis of the DMEA-grafted AEM was demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The prepared DMEA-grafted AEM exhibited higher thermal stability, homogeneous morphology, water uptake (WR) of 115%, and an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 2.70 meq/g. It was used for the adsorptive removal of methyl orange (MO) from an aqueous solution via batch processing. The effect of several operating factors, including contact time, membrane dosage, initial concentration of aqueous dye solution, and temperature on the percentage discharge of MO and adsorption capacity, was evaluated. Experimental data for adsorption of MO onto the DMEA-grafted AEM was analyzed with two parameter and three parameter nonlinear adsorption isotherm models but fitted best using a nonlinear Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption kinetics were studied by using several models, and attained results showed that experimental data fitted well to pseudo-second-order kinetics. A thermodynamic study showed that adsorption of MO onto the prepared DMEA-grafted AEM was an endothermic process. Moreover, it was a feasible and spontaneous process.

Amberlite XAD7 resin functionalized with crown ether and Fe(III) used for arsenic removal from water

Abstract Water represents an essential resource for life and for all natural processes. Our existence and our economic activities are totally dependent on this precious resource. It is well known that into the developing countries the main resource of drinkable water is represented by underground waters, so their contamination with arsenic represents a real problem that needs to be solved. To solve the problem of arsenic water pollution, it was necessary to develop a series of chemical, physicochemical and biological methods to reduce arsenic concentrations from water. From all these methods, adsorption offers many advantages including simple and stable operation, easy handling of waste, absence of added reagents, compact facilities and generally lower operation cost. The goal of this paper is to study the sorption properties of a new adsorbent material prepared by impregnating Amberlite XAD7 resin with crown ether (dibenzo-18-crown-6 ether) and loaded with Fe(III) ions. Solvent impregnated resin (SIR) method was used for functionalization. Amberlite XAD7 resin functionalization was evidenced by energy dispersive X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis and determination of specific surface by the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) analysis. Equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies were performed in order to determine the removal efficiency of the studied adsorbent for arsenic removal from water. In order to study the As(V) adsorption mechanism the experimental data were modelled using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second order kinetic models. Kinetic of adsorption process was better described by pseudo-second-order model. Experimental data were fitted with three non-linear adsorption isotherm models: Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips. Obtained experimental data were better fitted by Sips adsorption isotherm. The values of thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH°, ΔS°) showed that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. The results proved that Amberlite XAD7 resin with crown ether and loaded with Fe(III) is an efficient adsorbent for the As(V) removal from water. The possibility of reuse the adsorbent material through adsorption and desorption cycles was also studied and it was found that the material can be used in five sorption-desorption cycles. Maximum adsorption capacity obtained experimentally being 18.8 μg As(V)/g material.

Porous structure and adsorptive properties of pineapple peel based activated carbons prepared via microwave assisted KOH and K 2CO 3 activation

The present research explores the feasibility of microwave irradiation for preparation of high surface area activated carbon from pineapple peel (PPAC), an agricultural effluent emitted from the food can processing industries via KOH and K 2CO 3 activation. The activation process was performed at the microwave power of 600 W and irradiation time of 6 min. The equilibrium behavior of PPAC was investigated by performing batch adsorption experiments using methylene blue as adsorbate. Nonlinear adsorption isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin were used to simulate the equilibrium data. KOH activated sample demonstrated a better development of pore structure, with the BET surface area, total pore volume and average pore size of 1006 m 2/g, 0.59 m 3/g and 23.44 Å, respectively, while the monolayer adsorption capacity of methylene blue was determined to be 462.10 mg/g. The findings support the potential use of microwave assisted KOH and K 2CO 3 activation as a promising activation technique.

Preparation of amino-modified active carbon cartridges and their use in the extraction of quercetin from Oldenlandia diffusa

Polyethyleneimine (PEI) and ethylenediamine (EDA) as modifiers were bonded on active carbon (AC) surface for specific selective extraction of quercetin from Oldenlandia diffusa. The characteristics of the modified AC materials that were obtained were investigated by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR). The interactions between quercetin and the AC materials were investigated by fitting the static adsorption data to four linear and nonlinear adsorption isotherm models. Of these four models, the Langmuir–Freundlich adsorption isotherm was proved the best for investigating quercetin on AC materials. Scatchard analysis was used to evaluate the binding properties of the AC materials for quercetin. Solvent extraction and solid-phase extraction (SPE) were optimized, and the effect of the mobile phase pH was investigated to improve the performance for the separation of quercetin on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results from the validation of the proposed analytical method demonstrated that the EDA-modified AC was the most suitable SPE cartridge for the purification of quercetin from O. diffusa.

Experimental determination of adsorption energies, adsorption isotherms, probability density functions, and lateral molecular interactions on C XH Y/CaO systems

Reversed-flow gas chromatography (RF-GC) is extended to the measurements of the probability density function for the adsorption energies as well as the differential energies of adsorption due to lateral interactions of molecules adsorbed on different heterogeneous solid surfaces. All these calculations are based on a non-linear adsorption isotherm model as it is well accepted that the linear one is inadequate for substances such as these used in this work. Thus, some new important physicochemical parameters have been obtained for the characterization of the heterogeneous systems studied. The adsorbent used in this study was calcium oxide. The adsorption of many significant hydrocarbons was investigated. With these systematic experiments under conditions which are similar to the atmospheric ones, an extrapolation of the results obtained to “real” atmospheres with a high degree of confidence is possible.
