Non-indigenous species of Bryozoa from anthropogenic habitats in the Bay of Cádiz (South Iberian Peninsula)

Samples of bryozoans collected from two localities in the Bay of Cádiz with different levels of anthropogenic impact are studied. A total of 25 species was identified, of which 8 are considered non-indigenous (NIS), 12 as native and 5 cryptogenic. A new species of Hippopodina, Hippopodina similis sp. nov., is here described, and corrections to the diagnosis of the genus are proposed. The species appears to be a recent immigrant in Cádiz, although it could also be present in the eastern Mediterranean. Aeverrilla setigera and the genus Hippopodina itself are recorded for the first time in the eastern Atlantic. Anguinella palmata is recorded for the first time in Spanish waters. Amathia vidovici was already recorded in the Iberian Peninsula, but previous records should be confirmed. Other species, such as Amathia verticillata, Biflustra tenuis, Watersipora subatra and Schizoporella errata, were already recorded in the Bay of Cádiz very recently.

Comparison of pregnancy outcomes between indigenous and non-indigenous lupus patients.

To compare pregnancy outcomes between IA and non IA lupus patients. Pregnancy in lupus patients confers an increased risk of maternal and fetal morbidity. There are no data on pregnancy outcomes for indigenous Australian (IA) patients with lupus. Using state-wide longitudinal hospital morbidity data, we studied 702 pregnancies in IA (n = 31) and non-indigenous (NI) patients with lupus (n = 357) in Western Australia and compared rates for live birth (LB), preterm birth (PB) and gestational complications in the period 1985-2015. Results are presented as medians or frequency. IA patients had proportionally more pre-existing renal disease (35 vs 13%, P < 0.01) and lower socio-economic status (P = 0.02). Age at first pregnancy was lower in IA patients (27 vs 30 years, P < 0.001), recorded gravidity was similar (2 vs 2, P > 0.6) and elective termination (n = 138) was more frequent in NI than IA pregnancies (21.1 vs 4.8%, P < 0.01). For continued pregnancies (59 in IA and 505 in NI), respective outcomes were as follows: LB 84.7% versus 91.5% (P = 0.15), spontaneous abortion 13.5% versus 6.9% (P = 0.13), (pre-)eclampsia 8% versus 9.9% (P = 0.89), PB 12% versus 13.4% (P = 0.98) and caesarean delivery 30% versus 47.2% (P = 0.02). Gestational diabetes (26% vs 6.1%), renal flares (20% vs 5.6%) and infections (22% vs 6.3%) were all more frequent in IA lupus pregnancies (all P < 0.001). The burden of comorbidities was higher in IA patients with lupus due to renal flares, gestational DM and infections. Although PB rates were overall high, they were, however, similar for IA and NI lupus pregnancies, as were LB rates.

Assessing the fish fauna diversity and abundance at Aegean and Ionian seas, with emphasis on certain NIS fish species via Scientific diving and Visual Census.

The Mediterranean Sea and its exceptional biodiversity suffer from non-indigenous (NIS) and invasive species. These result from Lessepsian migration and human activities. Species with the highest negative impact include Pterois miles, Lagocephalus sceleratus and Fistularia commersonii. The current study assessed the distribution and abundance of these three species in the Aegean and Ionian Seas in the context of the regional diversity of ichthyofauna. Using Scientific Diving and Visual Census, we focused on NIS fish fauna, and surveyed most of the areas where the occurrence or establishment of NIS had been documented. Emphasis was given to regions with limited available data. This study assessed the homogeneity of diversity and abundance of the fish species at the diving sites; assessed the most dominant species per region; and calculated relevant biodiversity indexes. Our results suggest that the south and east parts of the Aegean Sea are the most affected by the establishment of NIS. Samos Island is concluded to be an important region for the expansion of NIS to the northern parts of the Aegean Sea. Also, both the Saronikos Gulf and the whole area of the Peloponnese seem to have a pivotal role in the expansion of distribution of NIS from the east Mediterranean sub-basin to the west sub-basin. The genus Siganus seems to have very high abundances and population densities in certain areas, and therefore its establishment could have negative impacts in these regions. We conclude that scientific diving is not appropriate for monitoring the population status of L. sceleratus and we propose more appropriate methodologies such as the use of baited cameras and ROV's to be used in the future.

Occurrence of marine nonindigenous (NIS) species: Current status, management approaches and challenges in Sri Lanka

Marine nonindigenous species (NIS) are one of the most significant threats to oceans. This article discusses the marine bioinvasions in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is highly vulnerable from marine bioinvasions considering its strategic location well connecting the east-west shipping route with a high marine traffic and high marine/coastal pollution. Many of the commercial ports/harbours are also located close to marine sensitive areas. However, the Marine Pollution Prevention Act No. 35 of 2008 implemented by the Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) has unclear provisions for ballast water management and does not address other vectors of NIS. There is an urgent need for the management of marine NIS followed by NIS monitoring and observations (which is currently inadequate).

Can Biological Traits Serve as Predictors for Fishes' Introductions, Establishment, and Interactions? The Mediterranean Sea as a Case Study.

The Mediterranean Sea (MED) is prone to species' introductions, induced by human activities and/or climate change. Recent studies focus on the biological traits that result in such introductions, yet on a single-area-type approach. Here, we used, analyzed, and compared biological traits derived from FishBase for MED, non-indigenous (NIS) and neonative (NEO) in the Mediterranean, and adjacent Atlantic (ATL) and Red Sea (RS) species. A quantitative trait-based analysis was performed using random forest to determine the importance of traits in the successful establishment in the Mediterranean. MED fishes were mainly demersal, slow growing and small-medium sized, preferring intermediate temperatures. Conversely, ATL were mainly deep-dwelling species, preferring low temperatures. RS and NIS were predominantly reef-associated, thermophilus, and stenothermic. NEO species were stenothermic with preference to intermediate-high temperatures. Omnivores with preference to animals was the most common trophic group among regions. MED species exhibited higher phylogenetic uniqueness (PD50) compared to RS and NIS, indicating that they have long ancestral branches and few descendants. Preferred temperature, habitat type preference and maximum reported length (Lmax) and infinite length (Linf) were the most important predictors in the establishment process. Overall, the results presented here could serve as a baseline for future research, especially by using more refined and/or additional biological trail estimates.

Alien Travel Companies: The Case of Two Sea Slugs and One Bryozoan in the Mediterranean Sea

Mediterranean marine fauna is constantly changing due to the entry of non-indigenous (NI) species and the loss of endemic biodiversity. In this framework, it is very important to monitor this constant change and investigate possible new pathways of dispersion. Marinas and ports are considered key stations to detect and study some important ecological aspects, such as NI and invasive species, the effects of climate change, and pollution. Here, we reported the case of a group of NI species that presumably reached the Mediterranean Sea together, each of them being ecologically associated with one another. The bryozoan Amathia verticillate and the sea slugs Favorinus ghanensis and Polycerella emertoni were found in the shallow waters of Fezzano’s marina in the gulf of La Spezia (Ligurian Sea, Mediterranean Sea). Molecular analyses were carried out to exclude cryptic diversity and to investigate the phylogenetic relationships occurring between closely related taxa. The spreading of these two NI sea slugs into the Mediterranean Sea was confirmed and the first record of P. emertoni from the Ligurian Sea reported. These findings shed some light on the poorly known ecology of these species that could be useful for future monitoring and conservation strategies.

Biosecurity risks posed by a large sea-going passenger vessel: challenges of terrestrial arthropod species detection and eradication

Large sea-going passenger vessels can pose a high biosecurity risk. The risk posed by marine species is well documented, but rarely the risk posed by terrestrial arthropods. We conducted the longest running, most extensive monitoring program of terrestrial arthropods undertaken on board a passenger vessel. Surveillance was conducted over a 19-month period on a large passenger (cruise) vessel that originated in the Baltic Sea (Estonia). The vessel was used as an accommodation facility to house workers at Barrow Island (Australia) for 15 months, during which 73,061 terrestrial arthropods (222 species - four non-indigenous (NIS) to Australia) were collected and identified on board. Detection of Tribolium destructor Uytt., a high-risk NIS to Australia, triggered an eradication effort on the vessel. This effort totalled more than 13,700 human hours and included strict biosecurity protocols to ensure that this and other non-indigenous species (NIS) were not spread from the vessel to Barrow Island or mainland Australia. Our data demonstrate that despite the difficulties of biosecurity on large vessels, stringent protocols can stop NIS spreading from vessels, even where vessel-wide eradication is not possible. We highlight the difficulties associated with detecting and eradicating NIS on large vessels and provide the first detailed list of species that inhabit a vessel of this kind.

Do Indigenous patients in Australia's Northern Territory present with more advanced colorectal cancer? A cohort study based on registry data.

Previous studies show that Indigenous Australians (IndA) of the Northern Territory (NT) present later and have lower survival for colorectal cancer (CRC) compared with non-Indigenous (NI) Territorians. This study compared the odds of presenting with advanced-stage CRC between IndA and NI adjusted for demographic, histopathological and surgical features. A cohort study of NT Cancer Registry (NTCR) CRC cases from 2005 to 2014. All (667) persons notified to the NTCR with a new diagnosis of CRC were included, of which 504 had sufficient data for analysis. The NTCR was used for case identification and linked to available hospital clinical data. The principal exposure was IndA compared with NI and the principal outcome was odds of presenting with advanced-stage tumour (III and IV) compared with early-stage (I and II). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression were performed on all relevant variables. Univariable logistic regression found no difference in the odds of advanced CRC between IndA and NI (odds ratio (OR) 0.99, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.56-1.76, P = 0.982). This effect remained insignificant adjusted for the effects of sex, tumour position, remoteness and time period (OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.47-1.55, P = 0.606) and when adjusted for tumour grade, lympho-vascular invasion, lymph node harvest and emergency status (OR 1.39, 95% CI 0.64-3.03, P = 0.401). In distinction from previous studies, there was no evidence that IndA of the NT presented with later stage CRC in 2005-2014. Other factors (incomplete treatment or comorbidity) may be responsible for the continued observed survival disparity.

Phytoplankton diversity in Adriatic ports: Lessons from the port baseline survey for the management of harmful algal species

An inventory of phytoplankton diversity in 12 Adriatic ports was performed with the port baseline survey. Particular emphasis was put on the detection of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens (HAOP) because of their negative impact on ecosystem, human health, and the economy. Phytoplanktonic HAOP are identified as species, either native or non-indigenous (NIS), which can trigger harmful algal blooms (HAB). A list of 691 taxa was prepared, and among them 52 were classified as HAB and five as NIS. Records of toxigenic NIS (Pseudo-nitzschia multistriata, Ostreopsis species including O. cf. ovata) indicate that the intrusion of non-native invasive phytoplankton species has already occurred in some Adriatic ports. The seasonal occurrence and abundance of HAOP offers a solid baseline for a monitoring design in ports in order to prevent ballast water uptake and possible expansion of HAOP outside their native region.

Physical Control of Nonindigenous Aquatic Plants in Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, CA

Establishment of nonindigenous (NI) aquatic plants in the nearshore regions of freshwater ecosystems has resulted in environmental degradation, recreation concerns, economic impacts, and substantial management challenges. To reduce these undesirable effects, NI aquatic plants are often targeted for removal or control by management agencies, but the efficacy of implementation is often not documented or sustained. In this study, we developed a management plan to completely remove all NI plants from Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, CA, using only physical control techniques. Management plan priorities were based on previous research and lessons learned, including the need for (1) integrated weed management using multiple physical control techniques, (2) a large initial treatment investment, (3) ongoing early detection and rapid response, (4) detailed ecological monitoring, and (5) a long-term commitment to annual maintenance removal. Application of this management plan resulted in complete removal of all NI aquatic plants from Emerald Bay and substantial cost savings each year after the initial large investment. Annual maintenance removal and monitoring will need to continue as long as NI aquatic plants continue to enter Emerald Bay on boats and currents from other areas of Lake Tahoe.

Australia's seizure divide — indigenous versus non-indigenous seizure hospitalization

Indigenous Australians suffer the highest mortality and morbidity rates of any ethnic minority in the developed world. To determine if the health outcome gulf between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians also applied to seizures, we conducted a retrospective analysis of seizure hospitalization (1998–2004) based on ethnicity (indigenous (I) and non-indigenous (NI)) for four Australian jurisdictions — Northern Territory (NT), Queensland (Qld), South Australia (SA), and Western Australia (WA). Total admissions were converted to age-standardized rates (ASR) and I/NI ASR ratios (I/NIRR) and compared across multiple variables. The summed admission (combined jurisdictions over six years) was 71,185 (I=11,593 and NI=59,592). Seizure hospitalization rate was always higher in the indigenous population (six-year I/NIRR — NT=5.6, Qld=4.0, SA=6.4, and WA=10.9; combined jurisdictions=5.6). Disparity was greatest for ages 40–64years (13.8) and 15–39years (7.0) and for indigenous males (7.4). As socioeconomic status rose, non-indigenous admission rates fell (ASR=1.7 to 1.1), yet indigenous admission rates rose (ASR=7.9 to 14.0). Indigenous emergency to elective admission ratios were higher (I=27 and NI=8), as were readmissions (1.5–2 fold), self-discharge separations (I=9.4% and NI=1.4%), bed days (I/NIRR=5.1), and admissions with an additional diagnosis (I/NIRR=3.3) or procedure (I/NIRR=3.4). Indigenous Australians maintained disproportionately high rates of emergency seizure hospitalization; from 1998 to 2004, the combined jurisdiction rate was more than five times the mean non-indigenous rate. Indigenous males aged 15–64years were overrepresented. Indigenous patients had lengthier admissions but higher self-discharge and readmission rates. The socioeconomic data raise the concern that social disadvantage restricts access to hospital-based seizure care for indigenous patients.

Hydrozoan species richness in the Mediterranean Sea: past and present

AbstractThe Mediterranean hydrozoan fauna (Siphonophora excluded) comprises 400 species; most (68%) occur in the Atlantic Ocean, 20% are endemic to the Mediterranean, 8% are of Indo‐Pacific origin, and 4% are non‐classifiable. There are 69 nonindigenous (NIS) species in the basin: 44% of these are casual (recorded just one or very few times), 28% established (widely recorded in the basin), 6% invasive (established NIS that are able rapidly or largely to disseminate away from the area of initial introduction, having a noticeable impact on the recipient community), and 22% questionable (of doubtful taxonomic status). Entry through the Suez Canal and range expansion through the Gibraltar Strait, often enhanced by ship traffic, appear to be the main processes for recent species introductions, but uncertainties remain for many NIS. Species additions immediately result in larger local or regional species pools, but the newcomers might impact on populations of native species, altering extinction probabilities. A more reliable evaluation of the species pool can be accomplished by adding new species when they enter the taxonomic record (i.e. the records of any taxon in all types of literature), and by removing species that have not been found for a ‘reasonable’ time (e.g. several decades). Of the 400 non‐siphonophoran hydrozoan species known to occur in the Mediterranean Sea, positive records in the last 10 years are available for 156 species (39%), whereas records of the remaining 244 species are older than a decade: 67 species have not been recorded for 41 years, 13 for 31–40 years, 79 for 21–30 years, and 85 for 11–20 years.

When Landscaping Goes Bad: The Incipient Invasion of Mahonia bealei in the Southeastern United States

Woodlots are forest islands embedded within an urban matrix, and often represent the only natural areas remaining in suburban areas. Woodlots represent critical conservation areas for native plants, and are important habitat for wildlife in urban areas. Invasion by non-indigenous (NIS) plants can alter ecological structure and function, and may be especially severe in remnant forests where NIS propagule pressure is high. Woody shrubs in the Family Berberidaceae have been well documented as invaders of the forest–urban matrix in North America. Mahonia bealei (Berberidaceae) is a clonal shrub native to China, and is a popular ornamental in the Southeastern United States. Mahoni bealei is listed as “present” on some local and state floras, but almost nothing is known regarding its invasion potential in the United States. We sampled 15 woodlots in Clemson, South Carolina, to assess the invasion of M. bealei and other woody non-indigenous species (NIS). M. bealei invaded 87% of the woodlots surveyed and species richness of NIS on these woodlots varied from 5 to 14. Stepwise-multiple regression indicated that less canopy cover and older M. bealei predicted greater abundance of M. bealei , and that not all subdivisions were equally invaded (P < 0.0001; r 2 = 0.88). The impact of M. bealei on native flora and fauna may be considerable, and it is likely to continue to spread in the Southeastern United States. M. bealei should be recognized as an aggressive invader in the Southeastern United States, with the potential for negative impacts on native flora and fauna.
