In his reference group theory, Merton discusses the two variables of eligibility and orientation. The interaction of these two variables serve to define six distinct kinds of nongroup members. These nongroup members are conceived of as differentially threatening to open groups. In this paper, the predictive validity of Merton's thesis is tested for groups whick differ in relative social status. In general, the results suggest that the theory is inadequate as a predictive tool.
