Abstract A modified method has been developed for the determination of inorganic bromide in nonfat dry milk. It is based on the method of Shrader, et al. (treatment of the sample with alcoholic KOH and ashing in the presence of NaOH and sodium peroxide) but uses a larger amount of NaOH to produce a semifusion state under ashing. Data indicate substantial recovery of added inorganic bromide. Average recovery for all levels studied was 97.12%, and reproducibility was excellent. Sixty-six samples of nonfat dry milk, representing production from various states, were analyzed for natural bromide content by the modified method. Results varied from 12 to 110 ppm.
