M6A methylation profiling as a prognostic marker in nasopharyngeal carcinoma: insights from MeRIP-Seq and RNA-Seq.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of malignant tumors commonly found in Southeast Asia and China, with insidious onset and clinical symptoms. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification significantly contributes to tumorigenesis and progression by altering RNA secondary structure and influencing RNA-protein binding at the transcriptome level. However, the mechanism and role of abnormal m6A modification in nasopharyngeal carcinoma remain unclear. Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma tissues from 3 patients and non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues from 3 individuals, all from Fujian Cancer Hospital, were sequenced for m6A methylation. These were combined with transcriptome sequencing data from 192 nasopharyngeal cancer tissues. Genes linked to prognosis were discovered using differential analysis and univariate Cox regression. Subsequently, a prognostic model associated with m6A was developed through the application of LASSO regression analysis. The model's accuracy was verified using both internal transcriptome databases and external databases. An extensive evaluation of the tumor's immune microenvironment and signaling pathways was performed, analyzing both transcriptomic and single-cell data. The m6A methylation sequencing analysis revealed 194 genes with varying expression levels, many of which are predominantly associated with immune pathways. By integrating transcriptome sequencing data, 19 m6A-modified genes were found to be upregulated in tumor tissues, leading to the development of a three-gene (EME1, WNT4, SHISA2) risk prognosis model. The group with lower risk exhibited notable enrichment in pathways related to immunity, displaying traits like enhanced survival rates, stronger immune profiles, and increased responsiveness to immunotherapy when compared to the higher-risk group. Single-cell analysis revealed that malignant cells exhibited the highest risk score levels compared to immune cells, with a high-risk score indicating worse biological behavior. The three hub genes demonstrated significant correlation with m6A modification regulators, and MeRIP-RT-PCR confirmed the occurrence of m6A methylation in these genes within nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. A prognostic model for nasopharyngeal carcinoma risk based on m6A modification genes was developed, and its prognostic value was confirmed through self-assessment data. The study highlighted the crucial impact of m6A modification on the immune landscape of nasopharyngeal cancer.

Increased CCT5 expression is a potential unfavourable factor promoting the growth of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Chaperonin containing TCP1 subunit 5 (CCT5) encodes the CCT5 protein subunit of chaperonin-containing TCP-1 (CCT/TRiC) complex, and is shown to be upregulated in tumour pathogenesis. The study aim was to investigate the differential expression of CCT5 between nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and noncancerous nasopharyngeal tissues, and the correlation between CCT5 expression and clinicopathological parameters/prognosis in patients with NPC. Microarray assay data were evaluated for differential expression between NPC and noncancerous nasopharyngeal tissues. CCT5 expression in NPC and noncancerous nasopharyngeal tissues was determined at mRNA and protein levels by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry. Relationships between CCT5 expression in NPC, clinical parameters, and prognosis were statistically analysed. CCT5-mediated cell proliferation was assessed using EdU and cell counting kit-8. Western blot and co-immunoprecipitation were utilized to explore E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase parkin (PARK2)-induced degradation of CCT5. Microarray data showed CCT5 levels to be significantly increased in NPC versus noncancerous nasopharyngeal tissues, which was confirmed by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemical assays. Increased CCT5 protein levels positively correlated with tumour size, tumour recurrence, and clinical stage, and inversely correlated with patient's overall survival. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that enhanced CCT5 protein expression is an independent prognostic factor for patients with NPC. Overexpression of CCT5 markedly induced NPC cell proliferation. Finally, PARK2, as a suppressive E3 ubiquitin-ligase enzyme, was shown to bind CCT5 and induce degradation in NPC. Increased CCT5 may be an unfavourable factor promoting NPC growth. Binding of PARK2 to CCT5 was associated with CCT5 degradation, suggesting that PARK2 is an upstream negative modulator in NPC.

LACTB promotes metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma via activation of ERBB3/EGFR-ERK signaling resulting in unfavorable patient survival.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) originates in the nasopharyngeal epithelium and has the highest metastatic rate among head and neck cancers. Distant metastasis is the main reason for treatment failure with the underlying mechanisms remaining unclear. By comparing the expression profiling of NPCs versus non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues, we found LACTB was highly expressed in the tumor tissues. We found that elevated expression of the LACTB protein in primary NPCs correlated with poorer patient survival. LACTB is known to be a serine protease and a ubiquitous mitochondrial protein localized in the intermembrane space. Its role in tumor biology remains controversial. We found that the different methylation pattern of LACTB promoter led to its differential expression in NPC cells. Overexpressing LACTB in NPC cells promoted their motility in vitro and metastasis in vivo. While knocking down LACTB reduced the metastasis capability of NPC cells. However, LACTB did not influence cellular proliferation. We further found the role of LACTB in promoting NPC metastasis depended on the activation of ERBB3/EGFR-ERK signaling, which in turn, affected the stability and the following acetylation of histone H3. These findings may shed light on unveiling the mechanisms of NPC metastasis.

An Integrated Analysis of mRNAs and miRNAs Microarray Profiles to Screen miRNA Signatures Involved in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

Objective:We aim to identify several microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs)-messenger RNAs (mRNAs) biomarkers correlated to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) based on an integrated analysis of miRNA and mRNAs microarray expression profiles.Methods:The available mRNA and miRNA microarray datasets were retrieved from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database according to pre-determined screening criteria. Differentially expressed miRNA and mRNAs (DEmiRNAs and DEmRNAs) were extracted between NPC and noncancerous nasopharyngeal tissues. The target genes of DEmiRNAs were predicted with miRTarBase followed by the construction of DEmiRNAs-target DEmRNAs network, and functional analyses were performed. The DEmiRNAs expressions were validated and the performance of these DEmiRNAs was assessed by the area under the curve (AUC) values. Finally, the correlations between DEmiRNAs and specific clinical factors were analyzed.Results:There were 1140 interaction pairs (including let-7d/f-MYC/HMGA2 and miR-452-ITGA9) in DEmiRNAs-target DEmRNAs network. The GO annotation analysis showed that several genes such as MYC, HMGA2 and ITGA9 primarily participated in cellular process. KEGG analysis showed that these targets were associated with cell cycle and cancer-related pathways. Down-regulated let-7(-d and –f) and up-regulated miR-452 were verified in datasets. The AUC values of these 3 DEmiRNAs (let-7d, let-7-f and miR-452) was 0.803, 0.835 and 0.735, respectively. Besides, miR-452 was significantly related to survival rate of NPC patients.Conclusion:The findings implied let-7d/f-MYC/HMGA2 and miR-452-ITGA9 might be promising targets for the detection and treatment of NPC.

Low expression of Cyfip1 may be a potential biomarker in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Cytoplasmic FMR1 interacting protein 1 (Cyfip1) is a new candidate tumor suppressor gene, which may play an impor- tant role in the occurrence and development of cancers. However, the role of Cyfip1 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains poorly known. The aim of this study was to investigate the Cyfip1 mRNA expression in NPC and its association with clinicopathological features. The study population comprised 114 Chinese individuals, including 69 NPC tissues and 45 non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues. We used real-time fluorescent relatively quantitative PCR to evaluate the Cyfip1 mRNA expression in NPC tissues and non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues. The expression level of Cyfip1 mRNA was significantly lower in patients with NPC than in the control samples (p=0.001). Furthermore, low expression level of Cyfip1 mRNA was significantly associated with invasive range (T3-T4 vs T1-T2, p=0.001), lymph node metastasis (N1-N3 vs N0, p=0.010), distant metastases (M1 vs M0, p=0.040) and clinical stage (III-IV vs I-II, p<0.001). Our results suggest the association between Cyfip1 mRNA expression and NPC. Detecting the expression of Cyfip1 may provide clinically useful information for diagnosis, progression and treatment methods in NPC.

5T4-specific chimeric antigen receptor modification promotes the immune efficacy of cytokine-induced killer cells against nasopharyngeal carcinoma stem cell-like cells

Relapse and metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) are presumably attributed to cancer stem cells (CSCs). In recent years, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-modified immune effector cells have been shown to have impressive antitumour efficacy. In this study, we aimed to identify appropriate tumour-associated antigens predominantly expressed on NPC stem cells (NPCSCs) and determine their suitability for CAR-engineered cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cell therapy against NPC. By investigating the expression patterns of potential target antigens (ROR1, 5T4 and CAIX) in NPC, we found that the oncofetal antigen 5T4 was predominately expressed in NPC cell lines and tissues but absent in non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues. Moreover, significantly enhanced expression of 5T4 in NPC spheroids revealed its relationship with putative NPCSCs. Hence, we designed a CAR construct (5T4-28Z) specific for 5T4 and generated CAR-transduced CIK cells. Our results showed that the artificial CAR was efficiently expressed on the surface of CIK cells and that no native phenotypes were altered by the gene transduction. Functional assays revealed that 5T4-28Z-CIK cells possessed both CAR-mediated and CAR-independent anti-NPC activity and were capable of efficiently attacking NPC cells, especially NPCSC-like cells in vitro, suggesting that they might serve as an attractive tool for developing efficient therapies against NPC.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma detection by tissue smears using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

ABSTRACTNasopharyngeal carcinoma is one of the most common malignant neoplasms in head and neck. In this work, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy technique was used to study the molecular differences between cancerous and noncancerous smear samples which were obtained after clinical biopsy by smearing the tissue on the slides. Principal component analysis combined with linear discriminant analysis provided a sensitivity of 79.4% and a specificity of 81.8% for differentiation between cancerous and noncancerous nasopharyngeal tissue smears. This work provides a good basis for the methodology of nasopharyngeal tissue smear based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy technique and is worth further studying.

Preliminary study of differentiating smears from cancerous and non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissue using confocal Raman spectroscopy.

Current practice for diagnosing nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is based on invasive tissue biopsy. This study aims to explore the feasibility of using Raman spectroscopy to differentiate cancerous and non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissue smears, expecting to realize minimal invasive diagnosis using smears from in vivo mucosa tissue by Raman spectroscopy. Biopsy tissue smears were acquired from 74 patients with pathologically diagnosed nasopharyngeal diseases and measured using confocal Raman spectroscopy. Both fingerprint region and high wavenumber Raman spectra were acquired with distinguish features. Multivariate statistical analysis was used to differentiate cancerous and non-cancerous groups, achieving a diagnostic sensitivity of 87.2 and specificity of 85.7 % for differentiating NPC from nasopharyngeal non-cancerous smears. This work indicates that the method has a unique advantage in microanalysis for tissue smears which may provide a promising minimal invasive (or noninvasive) diagnosing tool for cancer diagnosis.

Common variations in TERT-CLPTM1L locus are reproducibly associated with the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Chinese populations

Associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at 5p15 (TERT-CLPTM1L) and multiple cancer types have been reported. We examined whether polymorphisms in the TERT-CLPTM1L locus were related to the risk of developing nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) among Chinese populations. In the first stage, 26 tag SNPs were genotyped in a Guangxi population (855 patients and 1036 controls). In the second stage, the SNPs, which showed significant association, were further genotyped in a Guangdong population (997 patients and 972 controls). Functional analyses were conducted to verify the biological relevance of the associated polymorphism. In the 1st stage, four SNPs (rs2736098, rs2735845, rs402710, and rs401681) were significantly associated with the risk of developing NPC. After the 2nd stage validation, rs2735845 and rs401681 were independently associated with the risk of developing NPC in the additive model (rs2735845, OR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.04-1.37, P = 0.011; rs401681, OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.74-0.99, P = 0.034). Furthermore, we observed higher CLPTM1L messenger RNA levels in fetal mesenchymal stem cells from the rs2735845 G allele carriers compared with that from non-carriers. In addition, using an immunohistochemistry assay, we observed higher TERT and CLPTM1L levels in NPC tissues compared with that in non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues. Our findings suggest that polymorphisms in the TERT-CLPTM1L locus may play a role in mediating the susceptibility to NPC in Chinese populations.

Argonaute 2 and nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a genetic association study and functional analysis.

BackgroundArgonaute 2 (AGO2), a central component of RNA-induced silencing complex, plays critical roles in cancer. We examined whether the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of AGO2 were related to the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).MethodsTwenty-five tag SNPs within AGO2 were genotyped in Guangxi population consisting of 855 NPC patients and 1036 controls. The SNPs significantly associated with NPC were further replicated in Guangdong population consisting of 996 NPC patients and 972 controls. Functional experiments were conducted to examine the biologic roles of AGO2 in NPC.ResultsA significantly increased risk of advanced lymph node metastasis of NPC was identified for the AGO2 rs3928672 GA + AA genotype compared with GG genotype in both the Guangxi and Guangdong populations (combined odd ratio = 2.08, 95 % confidence interval = 1.44-3.01, P = 8.60 × 10−5). Moreover, the AGO2 protein expression levels of rs3928672 GA + AA genotype carriers were higher than the GG genotype carriers in the NPC tissues (P = 0.041), and AGO2 was significantly over-expressed in NPC tissues compared with non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues (P = 0.011). In addition, AGO2 knockdown reduced cell proliferation, induced apoptosis, and inhibited migration of NPC cells. Furthermore, gene expression microarray showed that genes altered following AGO2 knockdown were clustered in tumorigenesis and metastasis relevant pathways.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that the genetic polymorphism in AGO2 may be a risk factor for the advanced lymph node metastasis of NPC in Chinese populations, and AGO2 acts as an oncogene in the development of NPC.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12885-015-1895-4) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Integrated analysis of the differential cellular and EBV miRNA expression profiles in microdissected nasopharyngeal carcinoma and non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is commonly diagnosed in southern Asia. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally. Increasing evidence suggests that the dysregulation of miRNAs promotes NPC tumorigenesis. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and EBV-encoded miRNAs are also associated with the development of NPC. However, it is unclear how cellular and EBV miRNAs jointly regulate target genes and signaling pathways in NPC. In the present study, we analyzed the differential cellular and EBV miRNA expression profiles in 20pooled NPC tissues using microarrays. We found that 19cellular miRNAs and 9 EBV miRNAs were upregulated and 31cellular miRNAs were downregulated in NPC tissues. Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis indicated that the 19upregulated miRNAs target mainly the p53 signaling pathway in cancer, whereas the downregulated miRNAs regulate pathways related to cancer, focal adhesion and Erb, and MAPK signaling. In contrast, the upregulated EBV miRNAs target primarily the TGF-β and Wnt signaling pathways. Data also suggested that cellular miR-34b, miR-34c, miR-18a, miR‑200a/b, miR-449a, miR-31 and let-7 may be dysregulated in NPCs, and that the aberrant activation of their target genes in the p53 pathway and cell cycle enhance NPC cell survival and proliferation. In addition, EBV-miRNAs such as BART3 and BART5 target genes in the p53, TGF-β and Wnt signaling pathways to modulate NPC apoptosis and transformation. To better elucidate the interaction between miRNAs and target genes, we constructed an anti-correlated cellular and EBV miRNA/target gene regulatory network. The current findings may help dissect the roles played by cellular and EBV miRNAs during NPC tumorigenesis, and also provide useful biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of NPCs.

Urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor signaling is critical in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell growth and metastasis

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most common malignancies in southern China and Southeast Asia, with the highest metastasis rate among head and neck cancers. The mechanisms underlying NPC progression remain poorly understood. Genome-wide expression profiling on 18 NPC vs. 18 noncancerous nasopharyngeal tissues together with GeneGo pathway analysis and expression verification in NPC cells and tissues revealed a potential role of urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) in NPC progression, which has not been investigated in NPC. We then observed that uPAR expression is increased in poorly differentiated, highly metastatic NPC cells compared with lowly metastatic cells or differentiated NPC cells. In vitro studies demonstrated that uPAR regulates NPC cell growth, colony formation, migration, and invasion and promotes the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). Additional tumor xenograft and spontaneous metastasis experiments revealed that uPAR promotes NPC cell growth and metastasis in vivo. The JAK–STAT pathway is involved in uPAR-regulated signaling in NPC cells as determined by immunoblotting. Moreover, uPAR-mediated growth and motility is partially abolished upon treatment with the Jak1/Jak2 inhibitor INCB018424. We suppressed uPA expression in uPAR-overexpressing NPC cells and found that uPAR-mediated cellular growth and motility is not exclusively dependent on uPA. In summary, uPAR is a significant regulator of NPC progression and could serve as a promising therapeutic target.

Clinical significance of TrkB expression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Recent research has demonstrated that tropomyosin‑related kinase B (TrkB) plays an important role in neuronal survival, differentiation and migration; yet, its specific role in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is unclear. To elucidate its role in NPC, we examined TrkB expression in NPC tissues and cell lines, and investigated the correlation between TrkB expression and prognosis in patients with NPC. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on NPC specimens from 108 patients with follow-up information. Additionally, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blot analyses were used to determine TrkB expression levels in NPC and noncancerous nasopharyngeal tissues. RT-PCR and western blot analyses were also used to determine TrkB expression levels in 7 NPC cell lines and a nasopharyngeal epithelium cell line. High TrkB expression was significantly correlated with T classification, lymph node metastasis and clinical stage, respectively. Patients with NPC who had high TrkB expression had reduced disease-free survival and overall survival when compared with patients who had low TrkB expression. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that TrkB overexpression was an independent prognostic factor for patients with NPC. Furthermore, TrkB was overexpressed in NPC specimens and cell lines. TrkB expression levels were significantly increased in NPC specimens, and enhanced levels were correlated with a poor prognosis in patients with NPC. These findings suggest that TrkB may contribute to NPC progression and represent a novel prognostic indicator for patients with NPC.

Expression of Fragile Histidine Triad (FHIT) and WW-Domain Oxidoreductase Gene (WWOX) in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

The aim of the present study was to analyze the expression of FHIT and WWOX in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and correlations with clinical pathologic features. mRNA expression of the FHIT and WWOX was assessed by real-time fluorescent relatively quantitative PCR in 61 NPC tissues and 45 non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues. As a result, mRNA expression levels of both FHIT and WWOX were significantly lower in NPC patients than in control samples (P=0.049 and 0.045, respectively). Moreover, the mRNA expression of both had an inverse relation with larger invasive range (P=0.035 and 0.048, respectively), poor histologic differentiation (P=0.012 and 0.016) and advanced clinical stage (P=0.026 and 0.038). Consistency was found between expression of FHIT and WWOX in the same NPC tissues (r=0.681, P=0.00). In conclusion, synergy between FHIT and WWOX may exist in the development of NPC so that the two factors may be considered as important genetic markers. Detecting the expression of FHIT and WWOX should provide clinically significant information relevatn to tumor diagnosis, progression and treatment modalities for NPC.

NOR1 is an HSF1- and NRF1-regulated putative tumor suppressor inactivated by promoter hypermethylation in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Promoter hypermethylation-mediated silencing of tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) is a hallmark of oncogenesis. Oxidored-nitro domain-containing protein 1 (NOR1) is a candidate TSG that is downregulated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In the present study, we identified a functional NOR1 promoter that is regulated by heat shock factor 1 and nuclear respiratory factor 1. The promoter is located within a CpG island. Hypermethylation of this CpG island was found in NPC tissue samples and cancer cell lines, whereas no aberrant promoter methylation was detected in non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissue samples or normal nasopharyngeal epithelial cells. Treatment of NPC 6-10B cells and leukemia HL60 cells with 5'-aza-2'-deoxycytidine increased endogenous levels of NOR1 messenger RNA. Ectopic expression of NOR1 in NPC HNE1 cells inhibited tumor cell colony formation and viability. These findings suggest that promoter hypermethylation may participate in transcriptional inactivation of the NOR1 gene in NPC. Frequent epigenetic inactivation of the NOR1 gene in NPC suggests that it may be a critical tumor suppressor involved in the development of NPC.

Prognostic Value of Tiam1 and Rac1 Overexpression in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Purpose: This study is designed to investigate the roles of Tiam1 and Rac1 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: NPC samples (n = 102) were analyzed with immunohistochemistry for Tiam1 and Rac1 proteins, 28 of which were also analyzed with quantitative RT-PCR and Western blots for Tiam1 and Rac1 mRNA and protein expression. The expression of Tiam1 and Rac1 in noncancerous nasopharyngeal tissue (n = 26) acted as a control. The expression was gauged regarding stage, grade and survival. Results: Tiam1 and Rac1 were overexpressed in NPC cells and their protein upregulation was significantly associated with stage and grading (p < 0.05 for all). Cox regression analysis revealed Tiam1 and Rac1 protein upregulation was correlated with lower disease-free and overall survival rates (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Upregulation of Tiam1 and Rac1 proteins may play a critical role in tumor progression of NPC, and work as a prognostic factor for NPC patients.

Transcriptional patterns, biomarkers and pathways characterizing nasopharyngeal carcinoma of Southern China

BackgroundThe pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a complicated process involving genetic predisposition, Epstein-Bar Virus infection, and genetic alterations. Although some oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes have been previously reported in NPC, a complete understanding of the pathogenesis of NPC in the context of global gene expression, transcriptional pathways and biomarker assessment remains to be elucidated.MethodsTotal RNA from 32 pathologically-confirmed cases of poorly-differentiated NPC was divided into pools inclusive of four consecutive specimens and each pool (T1 to T8) was co-hybridized with pooled RNA from 24 normal non-cancerous nasopharyngeal tissues (NP) to a human 8K cDNA array platform. The reliability of microarray data was validated for selected genes by semi-quantitative RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.ResultsStringent statistical filtering parameters identified 435 genes to be up-regulated and 257 genes to be down-regulated in NPC compared to NP. Seven up-regulated genes including CYC1, MIF, LAMB3, TUBB2, UBE2C and TRAP1 had been previously proposed as candidate common cancer biomarkers based on a previous extensive comparison among various cancers and normal tissues which did not, however, include NPC or NP. In addition, nine known oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, MIF, BIRC5, PTTG1, ATM, FOXO1A, TGFBR2, PRKAR1A, KLF5 and PDCD4 were identified through the microarray literature-based annotation search engine MILANO, suggesting these genes may be specifically involved in the promotion of the malignant conversion of nasopharyngeal epithelium. Finally, we found that these differentially expressed genes were involved in apoptosis, MAPK, VEGF and B cell receptor signaling pathways and other functions associated with cell growth, signal transduction and immune system activation.ConclusionThis study identified potential candidate biomarkers, oncogenes/tumor suppressor genes involved in several pathways relevant to the oncogenesis of NPC. This information may facilitate the determination of diagnostic and therapeutic targets for NPC as well as provide insights about the molecular pathogenesis of NPC.
