Nomenclatural Novelties in Anthurium sect. Urospadix subsect. Obscureviridia from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

This paper presents and discusses nomenclatural novelties concerning names of Atlantic Forest species of Anthurium Schott sect. Urospadix Engl. in subsection Obscureviridia Engl. Nine lectotypifications, four neotypifications, one correction of authorship, and one clarification of a type are presented and discussed, and four designations are noted not to have been validly published.

Nomenclatural novelties and a new species in Chilean Cactaceae

The taxonomy of Chilean Cactaceae is notoriously difficult (see e.g., Duarte et al. 2014). Molecular data, and phylogenetic approaches, provided answer to better understand the natural classification of cacti (see e.g., Nyffeler 2002, Edwards 2005, Nyffeler &amp; Eggli 2010, Ritz et al. 2012, Schlumpberger &amp; Renner 2012, Larridon et al. 2015, 2018). As part of an ongoing revision of the Chilean Cacti, which is part of the “Modern Flora of Chile” initiative, nomenclatural novelties are needed in Eulychnia Philippi (1860: 23), Leucostele Backeberg (1953: 36) and Maihueniopsis Spegazzini (1925: 86) (Cactaceae Juss.).

On the nomenclature of Chenopodium pallidum and Atriplex schugnanica (Chenopodiaceae / Amaranthaceae sensu APG) and the perils of epitypification

In 2014 Sukhorukov &amp; Kushunina taxonomically restored the forgotten name Chenopodium pallidum applicable to a Himalayan taxon and designated its lectotype (a specimen in P) and also an epitype (in MW). However, in 2015 they published a correction to their article and demonstrated that the lectotype of C. pallidum in fact belongs to Atriplex and is most probably conspecific with A. schugnanica. The new combination Atriplex pallida was proposed, with A. schugnanica cited in its synonymy. The species of Chenopodium accepted by Sukhorukov &amp; Kushunina in 2014 as C. pallidum was described in 2015 as C. harae Sukhor. (as “harai”), with its holotype in MW being the same specimen as the epitype of C. pallidum. However, when introducing these nomenclatural novelties, the authors did not apply properly the provisions of the ICN, according to which the rejection of an epitype (as long as its supported type retains its status) is extremely complicated, or almost impossible without conservation. Moreover, the application of a name is ultimately established by its epitype, not by the type the epitype supports (in this case, the lectotype). Following the relevant articles of the ICN, it is concluded that (1) Chenopodium pallidum, by its epitypification (but not lectotypification), is the correct name for a Himalayan species of Chenopodium (despite the fact that its lectotype in P belongs to Atriplex), (2) C. harae and Atriplex pallida are homotypic synonyms of C. pallidum; and (3) Atriplex schugnanica (if taxonomically accepted) is the correct name for a species of Atriplex from the Pamir, Karakoram, and Himalayas. It is concluded that plant taxonomists, in order to avoid nomenclatural confusion, should be extremely careful with epitypifications and should not propose epitypes without the utmost necessity. A proposal to amend the Code aimed at better regulation of the existing procedure of epitypification is desirable.

The genus Halegrapha new to Hawaii, with the new and potentially endemic species H. paulseniana and an updated checklist of Hawaiian lirellate Graphidaceae (Ascomycota: Ostropales)

The new species Halegrapha paulseniana Luch & Lucking is described from Hawaii, which constitutes the first report of the genus for this archipelago. The new species differs from the most similar taxon, H. mexicana, in the much larger lirellae featuring an apically complete, thin thalline margin, and from all other species in the genus by its laterally mostly uncarbonized excipulum. We provide nomenclatural updates for the 70 species of lirellate Graphidaceae reported from Hawaii so far, introducing the following nomenclatural novelties: Allographa gracilescens (Redinger) Luch & Lucking, comb. & stat. nov., Fissurina homichlodes (Redinger) Luch & Lucking, comb. nov., Fissurina stromatoides (H. Luch & Lucking, comb. nov., Phaeographis fulgurata (Fee) Luch & Lucking, comb. nov., Phaeographis oscitans (Tuck.) Luch & Lucking, comb. nov., Phaeographis rhodoplaca (Mull. Arg.) Luch & Lucking, comb. nov., Platygramme kaalensis (Tuck.) Luch & Lucking, comb. & stat. nov., Platygramme tumulata (Nyl.) Luch & Lucking, comb. nov. and Sarcographa dendroides (Leight.) Tabaquero, Bawingan & Lucking, comb. nov. (validated from an earlier, intended new combination that was not validly published).

Lectotypification of Ischaemum heterotrichum Hack. (Andropogoneae, Poaceae)

The genus Ischaemum Linnaeus (1753: 1049) was established with two species, viz. I. muticum Linnaeus (1753: 1049) and I. aristatum Linnaeus (1753: 1049). At present, the genus comprises ca. 71 species distributed in warm and tropical regions of the world (Mabberley 2008). It is represented by 56 species in India of which 43 species are endemic (Srivastava &amp; Nair, 2010). In recent years, the genus has attracted the attention of many researchers for novelties in taxonomy (Gorade et al. 2016, Sunil et al. 2017), distribution (Datar et al. 2014) and nomenclature (Tiwari et al. 2016).

Twentieth century vascular plant taxonomy in Portugal

We discuss the development of, and trends in, vascular plant taxonomy in Portugal during the 20th century, with emphasis on the institutions and taxonomists that were instrumental in advancing and facilitating this branch of scientific botanical endeavour. We show that the bulk of the nomenclatural novelties published by Portuguese botanists for elements of the vascular flora of the country, and beyond, were produced by a small group of 69 taxonomists who were mostly based at institutions in one of three Portuguese cities: Coimbra, Lisboa (Lisbon) and Porto. In all three instances the individuals were associated with local herbaria that were managed by universities, while in Lisboa other government-sponsored projects and institutions additionally played a pivotal role in the production of complete or partial Floras for Portugal and its former colonies. These individuals are comprehensively tabulated and biographical information is provided for all of them. With 440 names published, Rosette Mercedes Saraiva Batarda Fernandes (1916–2005), who worked at the University of Coimbra, was the most prolific taxonomist in terms of publishing new names. She was the sole author of more than half of these names. Nomenclatural novelties and typifications in Spinopalmoxylon, Sapindoidea and Carpolithes (fossil Magnoliidae) from central European Paleogene and Neogene

The fossil species Spinopalmoxylon teutonicum (Arecaceae), Sapindoidea margaritifera, S. globosa (Sapindaceae), and Carpolithes mettenii (Magnoliidae inc. sed.) from the central European Paleogene and Neogene are typified. Furthermore, the names Spinopalmoxylon teutonicum (basionym: Chamaerops teutonica) and Carpolithes mettenii (basionym: Pistacia mettenii) are here proposed as new combinations.

Nomenclatural novelties in Lessingianthus (Asteraceae - Vernonieae): an extraordinary new species, a lectotypification, and a new combination from a resurrected synonym

ABSTRACT Lessingianthus spinifolius is here described and illustrated as a new species of the tribe Vernonieae (Asteraceae) from Chapada dos Veadeiros, State of Goias, Brazil. The new species is thus far known only from the type locality. The characteristics that most differentiate L. spinifolius from congeners are: (i) leaf blade strongly revolute; and (ii) leaf blade with spines on the margins. The new species is similar to L. onopordioides due to both having a similarly shaped involucre and the involucre being eximbricate with lanceolate phyllaries. Taxonomic and ecological comments, a distribution map, conservation status assessment, and illustrations of the new species are provided. Additionally, Vernonia araneosa is resurrected from the synonymy of L. durus, and a new combination, L. araneosus based on V. araneosa, is proposed, a lectotype designated, and its affinities with L. durus discussed.
