Design and experimental verification of hybrid excitation magnetic field modulation machine for electric vehicle propulsion

As one sort of flux modulation machine based on magnetic gear effect, field-modulated machine features with low speed large torque. A novel hybrid excitation field-modulated machine (HEFMM) is proposed by introducing the concept of hybrid excitation, the flux modulation poles (FMPs) and excitation winding of which are emplaced in stator teeth and the adjacent FMPs. It can be maintained wide speed range operation through the processes of flux-enhancing and flux-weakening with no increasing machine bulk, as well as the numbers of stator and rotor slot. The working principle of proposed machine is deeply studied, as well as basic electromagnetic characteristics are calculated by finite element method, including no-load magnetic flux linkage, no-load back electromotive force, cogging torque and output torque. In addition, the processes of flux-enhancing and flux-weakening are analyzed. Finally, one prototype with one kilowatt was built and its static characteristics were tested. The results show that the proposed HEFMM has the features of high torque density, small cogging torque and wide speed range, which is promising candidate for electric vehicle direct drive field.

Design and Analysis of Five-Phase Fault-Tolerant Vernier Permanent Magnet Machines for Direct-Drive Occasions

Abstract A fault-tolerant vernier permanent magnet machine (FTVPMM) with five phases for direct-drive occasions is designed and analyzed. The construction of the proposed FTVPMM is introduced and the principle of the vernier modulation effect is investigated. Parameters are designed and optimized by finite element analysis (FEA), including tooth width, slot opening, PM thickness, pole-arc coefficient, air-gap length, and rotor yoke. Furthermore, major electromagnetic performances are discussed, including cogging torque, no-load back electromotive force (BEMF), output torque, and fault-tolerant capability.

Investigation of design methodology for doubly-fed bearingless flux reversal motor

This article integrates the technology of bearingless motors with the basic theory of magnetic flux reverse motors, proposes a doubly fed bearingless magnetic flux reverse motor, and conducts research on its structural design, operating mechanism, electromagnetic performance analysis, mathematical model, control method, digital control system, and other aspects. The basic structure of a new type of doubly fed bearingless magnetic flux reverse motor is designed, and the principle of radial suspension force generation is studied. The performance related to torque and radial suspension force is analyzed. A mathematical model of torque and radial suspension force is established, including magnetic field distribution, no-load permanent magnet flux, and no-load back electromotive force. A doubly fed bearingless magnetic flux reverse motor system is designed and constructed, and inductance experiments are conducted.

Analysis and multi-objective optimization design of sinusoidal DSEM with two different excitation modes based on Gray-Fuzzy-Taguchi method

The nonlinearity of sinusoidal doubly salient electro-magnetic machine (SDSEM) leads to the fuzzy optimization range of its design parameters. And there is a conflict problem in multiple optimization objectives. Therefore, the multi-objective optimization of SDSEM with two different excitation modes is carried out based on the Gray-Fuzzy-Taguchi method. Firstly, the proposed sinusoidal method of square wave back electromotive force (EMF) phase modulation is introduced. And the key parameters to improve the symmetry and sinusoidal degree of the back EMF waveform are pointed out. Then, the sensitivity of key parameters is analyzed and the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio is calculated by Taguchi orthogonal test. Secondly, the S/N ratio is linearly normalized by grey correlation analysis. Then, fuzzy reasoning is used to synthesize multiple performance indexes of the motor into a multiple performance characteristics index (MPCI) value, and the optimal scheme is obtained. Finally, the optimized SDSEM with concentrated magneto-motive forces (SDSEM-CF) and SDSEM with distributed magneto-motive forces (SDSEM-DF) are simulated and compared. The SDSEM-DF prototype is developed and verified by experiments. The results show that the no-load back EMF of the prototype has a good sinusoidal degree. Based on vector control, the sinusoidal drive of DSEM is realized without increasing the control complexity, which greatly reduces the torque ripple of the flux reluctance motor.

Study on the Influence of a Combined-Halbach Array for the Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Electrical Machine With Yokeless and Segmented Armature

To increase torque density, a combined-Halbach array for the axial flux permanent magnet machine (AFPMM) with yokeless and segmented armature (YASA) is presented in this paper. Firstly, the YASA machine models with conventional axial magnets and combined-Halbach array magnets are established by using 3-D finite-element method (FEM). Then, the torque, torque per magnet-volume and no-load back electromotive force (back-EMF) are calculated, and the performance of two machines are analyzed and compared. It is demonstrated that the combined-Halbach array can improve the torque density of the machine and the utilization rate of the magnets. Finally, the combined-Halbach array rotor is optimized, where the rotor with unequal-thickness magnets is established, and its torque density is calculated under different thickness. The results show that the combined-Halbach array with unequal-thickness magnets can decrease the amount of permanent magnet materials, thus improve the utilization of magnets and reduce the costs.

Performance Comparison and Optimization of a PMSM Based on Hybrid-Type Permanent Magnet with Two Kinds of Rotor Topology

This study focuses on designing and optimizing Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) using hybrid rare earth and ferrite materials. Two distinctive rotor topologies of the Hybrid-Type Permanent Magnet Motor (HTPMM) are proposed: series and parallel magnetic circuits. Initially, the rotor topology and magnetic circuit principles of both the prototype and the designed HTPMM are introduced. Subsequently, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is employed to optimize the two HTPMMs, determining the final optimized parameters. Thise study further analyzes the cost advantage of HTPMMs from the perspective of permanent magnet materials, and detailed finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate the electromagnetic performance, including the air-gap flux density, no-load back electromotive force, cogging torque, load torque characteristics, and demagnetization properties. A comparative analysis of the prototype and two designed motors reveals that the HTPMM exhibits similar performance to the prototype, effectively reducing the usage of rare earth materials and significantly lowering the manufacturing costs. This research validates the feasibility of reducing rare earth material usage while maintaining a similar performance and provides a new perspective for the design of permanent magnet motors.

Influence of Magnetic Pole Stepping Combined with Auxiliary Stator Slots on the Stability of Dual-Rotor Disc Motors

With the growing utilization of disc motors, the enhancement of their operational stability has become a critical research area. The existing studies usually focus on improving the pole structure of the rotor or the stator structure to optimize one performance of the motor and less on optimizing multiple performances. This paper simultaneously improves the rotor pole structure and stator tooth structure of the motor in order to optimize the sinusoidal waveform of the no-load back electromotive force and the cogging torque at the same time to achieve the goal of reducing the vibration and noise of the permanent-magnet synchronous dual-rotor statorless magnetically coupled disc motor and improve its operational stability. A finite element simulation model of a 20-pole, 24-slot permanent-magnet synchronous dual-rotor statorless magnetically coupled disc motor is established to analyze the influence of various factors, including the number of magnetic pole steps, the opening position, depth, and width of the stator auxiliary slot, on the motor performance. The results show that this stator–rotor combination improvement method effectively reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) and attenuates multiple harmonics, and the peak cogging torque pulsation is significantly improved while other properties of the motor meet the technical requirements, and the motor performance is improved.

Multiobjective Optimization Design of a Brushless Excitation Synchronous Motor Based on the Taguchi Method

Considering the issue of significant total harmonic distortion in the no-load back electromotive force (EMF) and torque ripple of a brushless excitation synchronous motor (BESM) used in a compressor, a multiobjective optimization design method of a BESM based on the Taguchi method was proposed. By selecting the polar arc coefficient, stator slot width, damping winding pitch, and air gap length as the optimization parameters, the maximum no-load back EMF, minimum back EMF total harmonic distortion rate, and minimum torque ripple are selected as the optimization objectives. Then, the Taguchi method was employed to construct an orthogonal table to enhance the performance of the optimization objectives. This approach facilitated the determination of the optimal parameter combination for optimization. Finally, the simulation results indicate significant enhancements in each optimized aspect of the motor’s performance following the optimization process. This outcome serves as validation for the efficacy of the Taguchi method in achieving an optimal design for the BESM.

Analytical Model for Electromagnetic Performance Prediction of IPM Motors Considering Different Rotor Topologies

Aiming at the problem of long computation time of finite element analysis (FEA) and poor calculation universality of existing analytical models, this paper proposes a general hybrid analytical model to predict the no-load and load performance of interior permanent magnet motors with any slot-pole combination, where the form of magnet can be V-shape, U-shape or flat-shape. The magnets are equivalent correspondingly according to the rotor structure in the modeling process and the motor can be divided into eight types of subdomains, the no-load and load magnetic field of the motors can be obtained by solving the equations established by boundary conditions, where the nonlinear of core is calculated by local MEC. The proposed model can be used to calculate the air-gap magnetic field, no-load back electromotive force, cogging torque and electromagnetic torque of IPM motors with different rotor topologies. The effectiveness of the proposed model is verified by both FEA and experiments. Compared with FEA, this model can consume less time with the acceptable accuracy, which brings convenience to the design and optimization of related types of motors.

Improved Current and MTPA Control Characteristics Using FEM-Based Inductance Maps for Vector-Controlled IPM Motor

Some major problems in the motor drive are the overshoot or undershoot of transient response characteristics and a parameter mismatch due to magnetic saturation. This study proposed a 3D inductance map combined with a maximum-torque-per-ampere (MTPA) map based on a finite-element (FE) motor model considering a cross-coupling magnetic saturation impact to overcome this problem. The proposed FE motor model has a high accuracy of no-load back electromotive force (e.m.f.) around 98.3% compared to the measurement results. Then, nine scenarios of vector control combinations of inductance maps and current supply variations of β 0°, 45°, and MTPA were investigated. As a result, the transient response improvement for β 0°, 45°, and MTPA without the map and with Ld and Lq maps is 63%, 10%, and 15%, respectively. Moreover, for the steady-state response, the average torque improvement between MTPA and Idref 0 A control is 9.21%, 8.97%, and 8.98% for the no-map, ave-map, and 3D-inductance-map conditions, respectively. The MTPA trajectory characteristic was also updated to illustrate the actual MTPA condition compared to the conventional MTPA control. In detail, the proposed method has reduced the parameter mismatch for the current control loop in the transient state and improved the MTPA control trajectory for the steady-state response. Finally, the improvement of vector control characteristics of the proposed method was verified by an FE simulation and experimental measurement results.

A combined-pole permanent magnet synchronous motor incorporating nanocomposite magnets

The development of rare earth permanent magnet materials has made outstanding contributions to the advancement of high performance permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). However, the non-renewable and strategic protection of rare earth resources leads to price fluctuations and supply risk of rare earth permanent magnets, limiting electrical vehicle development and popularity. In this paper, we optimized the design of the nanocomposite magnet microstructure and proposed a combined-pole interior nanocomposite permanent magnet synchronous motor (CP-INPMSM), combining nanocomposite magnet and PMSM. The simulation results show that the no-load back-electromotive force and torque of the motor are improved. This design can reduce the usage of rare-earth permanent magnet materials and improve the electromagnetic performance of the motor.

Research on magnetic field and temperature field of multi-phase SPMSM under winding fault

In order to quickly and accurately calculate fault-tolerant capability of multi-phase surface-mount permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) at condition of asymmetrical fault, based on subdomain model, an analytical model for multi-phase SPMSM with asymmetric fault is proposed to calculate magnetic field distribution. Firstly, air-gap flux density, no-load back electromotive force (EMF) and electromagnetic torque are obtained accurately. Then, in order to improve the fault-tolerant capability of multi-phase SPMSM, with the minimum phase current as optimization objective, a fault-tolerant control system under the condition of single-phase winding disconnection is established. The performance of electromagnetic torque and torque ripple are used as evaluation indicators. Finally, taking a 12-phase SPMSM prototype with 44-poles 48-slots as an example, the effectiveness of proposed model is proved by 2D finite element model (FEM) and experiment test.

Accurate sub-domain model for magnetic field computation in electrical machines with HTS materials

The primary aim of this study was to develop and validate an accurate sub-domain analytical model to estimate the magnetic field of electric machines with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) excitation and armature windings. The model was developed by utilizing the separation variable and harmonic analysis methods to solve Laplace’s or Poisson’s equations of the vector magnetic potential in two-dimensional polar coordinates. The theoretical derivations of the final analytical equations for the magnetic flux density distribution in the air-gap and in permanent magnets, electromagnetic torque, and no-load back-electromotive force (back-EMF) are explained in detail. Finally, the magnetic vector potential, flux density distribution of each sub-domain, no-load back-EMF, and inductive reactance of the armature winding were solved by considering the critical parameters of the superconducting materials, and the influence of higher harmonics. The finite-element method (FEM) was used to validate the accuracy of the developed analytical method for the investigated HTS generator. The results show the developed analytical method is accurate and time-saving.

Research on Armature Winding Characteristic of a Double Rotor Permanent Magnet Motor From Perspective of the Magnetic-Field Modulation

In this article, a research method for armature winding characteristic of double rotor permanent magnet (DRPM) motor is proposed, in which the key is to analyze and investigate the filter effect from the perspective of air-gap magnetic-field harmonic. Considering that the back electromotive force (EMF) is the intuitive manifestation of the winding characteristic, the relationship between air-gap harmonics and back EMF is studied. Based on this, an effective air-gap harmonic evaluation factor is defined, which is mainly aimed to effectively evaluate the winding filter effect. Meanwhile, in order to comprehensively investigate the filter effect caused by the winding, two types of winding configurations, including double-layer winding (DLW) and single-layer winding (SLW), are incorporated into the design of the DRPM motor. Then, the leading evaluation factor is purposefully selected as one of optimization objectives to achieve optimal design of the motor, for further improvement of the winding characteristic. In addition, the leading evaluation factor related to the effective air-gap harmonic and other basic performances are evaluated, including no-load back EMF and torque. Finally, a prototype motor is manufactured and tested for validation.

Analysis and Comparison of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors According to Rotor Type under the Same Design Specifications

A surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) is an electric motor with a simple magnetic circuit design, fast responsiveness, linear torque–current characteristics, speed–voltage characteristics, and constant operating speed. SPMSMs use only magnetic torque; however, interior PMSMs (IPMSMs) have high power densities because they can use reluctance torque. In addition, when flux-weakening control is used, the operating range is wide compared with the SPMSM. This study presents a comparative analysis of the characteristics of SPMSM and bar-type IPMSM. Characteristic analyses are performed by setting the same stator shape, rated speed, number of turns, winding specifications, voltage limit, and magnet usage in a pole/slot combination of six poles and 27 slots. Next, we compare the no-load back electromotive force, cogging torque, and loss characteristics, and perform a characteristic analysis of each model while satisfying the design specifications. No-load and load tests are performed using a back-to-back system. The results of the analysis and experimental results are in good agreement, and the reliability of the analysis results is guaranteed. The SPMSM is approximately 8.5% superior to the IPMSM in terms of core loss, and the eddy current loss is greater than that of the IPMSM.

Design Optimization of a New Hybrid Excitation Drive Motor for New Energy Vehicles

In this paper, a new hybrid excitation drive motor (HEDM) was proposed to solve the problem of an uncontrollable magnetic field of a permanent magnet motor. The rotor part of the motor was composed of a combined magnetic pole permanent magnet rotor and a brushless electric claw rotor, in which the combined magnetic pole permanent magnet rotor has a parallel magnetic circuit structure. According to the characteristics of the parallel rotor structure, the equivalent magnetic circuit model was established, and the no-load leakage flux coefficient of the claw pole rotor was calculated. The Taguchi method was used for objective optimization of the permanent magnet rotor structure. The distortion rate of no-load back electromotive force (EMF) was taken as the first optimization goal; the cogging torque and the average torque were taken as the second optimization goal; and the torque fluctuation coefficient was a constraint condition. The optimal parameter matching under the mixed horizontal matrix was obtained. The parameters of the claw pole were optimized by using the method of uniform variables, and the dimension parameters of the motor were obtained. Finite element analysis and prototype tests were carried out for the optimized motor structure. The rationality and feasibility of the new HEDM as a vehicle motor were verified, which provided a possibility for the application of the new energy vehicle drive motor field.

Research of a Stator PM Excitation Solid Rotor Machine for Flywheel Energy Storage System

A typical flywheel energy storage system (FESS) includes an electrical machine, a flywheel, and magnetic bearings, which are independent of each other. Therefore, the structure of FESS is complicated, which leads to the problems of high cost and low integration. This article presents a novel stator PM excitation solid rotor machine (SPE-SRM) for FESS, which integrates an electrical machine, flywheels, and a magnetic bearing. The design method of the SPE-SRM is presented specifically. First, the structure and operation principle of the SPE-SRM are illustrated. Second, the design and optimization of the flywheel-rotor are presented with considering of power, energy storage, and mechanical strength. Third, the magnetic equivalent circuit of the SPE-SRM is established to simplify the design. Besides, the armature reaction and leakage flux factor are investigated. Fourth, the performance indexes, including torque, suspension force, no-load back electromotive force (back-EMF), losses, and temperature rise are fully analyzed by the finite element analysis. Finally, a 22 kW prototype is manufactured and tested. The rationality of the concept and design is validated by experiments. The SPE-SRM has the merits of high integration, robust structure, and low cost, so it has the potential for wide application in FESS.

A Novel Hybrid Excitation Doubly Salient Generator with Separated Windings by PM Inserted in Stator Slot for HEVs

Aiming to design a generator with high reliability, high efficiency, and especially a constant output voltage over a wide speed range for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), this paper proposes a novel topology of a hybrid excitation doubly salient generator with separate windings (HEDSGSW). The topology herein utilizes a hybrid excitation type of PMs and DC windings to generate parallel magnetic circuits. In addition, PMs are embedded in the magnetic bridge to insulate the excitation windings with armature windings. This design can achieve compactness, efficiency, and especially constant output capability over a wide speed range. The geometry and flux regulation principles, including magnetic flux circuits, are elaborated. After comparing three power generation modes, the most suitable mode, namely, the doubly salient generation 2 (DSG2) mode, is confirmed to ensure a stable voltage output performance. Then, considering the non-uniformity effect of the stator and rotor slots, the no-load back electromotive force (EMF) expressions are derived based on the EMF to air-gap relative permeance method. Furthermore, a 1 kW HEDSGSW FEA model, with an output voltage of 42 V and a rated speed of 6000 rpm, is built to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally, the operating properties of the HEDSGSW, such as no-load characteristics and adjustment characteristics, are analyzed to further verify the rationality of its magnetic flux circuit and the flexibility of the excitation regulation capability.

A Quasi-Sinusoidal Concentrated Winding Used in an Integrated Magnetic-Field-Modulated Brushless Compound-Structure Machine

As a promising candidate of the electrical continuously variable transmission (ECVT), the integrated magnetic-field-modulated brushless compound-structure machine (IMFM-BCSM) has advantages of compact structure and no brush. The IMFM-BCSM is composed of a stator with two sets of windings, a permanent-magnet (PM) rotor and a modulation rotor. Due to its special operating principle, i.e., the magnetic field modulation principle, the back electromotive force (EMF) waveform distortion of the IMFM-BCSM is more serious than that of the conventional PM machine. To solve the above problem, a quasi-sinusoidal concentrated winding (QSCW) configuration is proposed and corresponding design method is further introduced. In order to observe the filtering ability of the QSCW, comparisons between QSCW configuration and fractional-slot concentrated winding configuration are carried out. The results show that when the QSCW configuration is employed, the no-load back EMF of the regular winding is more sinusoidal; the distortion degree is less affected by the rotor speeds; and the torque ripple is much smaller. Finally, a prototype is manufactured to verify the theoretical analysis.

Analysis and Reduction Methods of Cogging Torque in Dual PM Vernier Machines With Unevenly Distributed Split Teeth

This article investigates the source and reduction methods of cogging torque in dual PM Vernier machines (DPVMs), especially for the ones with unevenly distributed split teeth (UDST). At first, the increase of no-load back electromotive force in DPVMs with UDST is illustrated through the analysis of airgap working flux harmonics. The reason for largely increased cogging torque of DPVMs with UDST is then analyzed, and main flux harmonics that contribute to cogging torque are identified. To reduce cogging torque and torque ripple, several effective methods are introduced in this article, which are mainly based on the reduction or offset of corresponding airgap flux harmonics. The cogging torque reduction effects and torque performances of these methods are compared. Among them, newly proposed N/S-parts offset method is proved to be superior to other methods in DPVMs. A new DPVM prototype with UDST and N/S-parts offset structure is built and tested. Experimental results show that through the N/S-parts offset method, cogging torque of the machine is largely decreased from 9 to 0.3 N·m, which validates the analysis and simulation results.
