Population and Nesting Records of House Sparrow <i>Passer domesticus </i> in Yellampet, Nizamabad District, Telangana, India

We studied the population and nesting records of House Sparrow Passer domesticus during winter in Yellampet village, Telangana. The ecological density of House Sparrow was investigated using fixed width transects. The density of sparrow vary from 15 to 335 per hectare in different transects. Bonferroni confidence interval was used to know the preference of location types i.e., houses, shops and hotels for foraging and nesting. Shops were used significantly more than expected according to availability of nest sites and also for foraging. A total of 81 active nests were recorded. The present study shows that a handful breeding population of House Sparrow harboring in Yellampet village.

Emotional Maturity of Tribal and Non-Tribal Pre – Adolescents: A Study of Gandhari Region in Nizamabad District

Scheduled Tribes in the Gandhari area of Nizamabad District in Telangana State is interior area in the state. It is the most primitive area where tribal are living. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of gender, community culture and type of school on emotional maturity of tribal and non-tribal pre-adolescents in Gandhari area. Present study sample comprised of 150 students. Their age range was 13 to 16 years. To assess emotional maturity, Emotional maturity scale. After careful examination of data results indicate that gender played a significant role in emotional maturity, females performed significantly better than the males, non-tribal children were better than their tribal counterparts and type of school also played significant role, where students of private schools had better emotional maturity than students of government schools.

Drinking water with fluoride pollution risk to human health

Drinking water source was open dug wells but as time passed these wells became dry due to decrease in ground water column. Present day locations under study get the drinking water from bore wells. These water sources are safe and hygienic compared to open dug wells. Health complaints after consumption of this water were alarming and it was envisaged to check their quality by chemical analysis. A systematic investigation of variations in some nutrient levels from 58 locations in Nizamabad mandal, Nizamabad district was carried out from August 2012 to July 2013. 457 samples from bore wells/hand pumps, which serve as drinking water sources in the locations of these studies, were sampled. The present investigation was undertaken to assess the magnitude of pollution by monitoring key water quality parameters like pH, turbidity, alkalinity, total hardness, and various ions such as Ca, Cl, F, Mg NO3- and SO42- by following the standard methods of APHA (American Public Health Association, 1998).

Analysis of multi-temporal SPOT NDVI images for small-scale land-use mapping

Land-use information is required for a number of purposes such as to address food security issues, to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and to support decisions regarding food trade and crop insurance. Suitable land-use maps often either do not exist or are not readily available. This article presents a novel method to compile spatial and temporal land-use data sets using multi-temporal remote sensing in combination with existing data sources. Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT)-Vegetation 10-day composite normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) images (1998–2002) at 1km2 resolution for a part of the Nizamabad district, Andhra Pradesh, India, were linked with available crop calendars and information about cropping patterns. The NDVI images were used to stratify the study area into map units represented by 11 distinct NDVI classes. These were then related to an existing land-cover map compiled from high resolution Indian Remote Sensing (IRS)-images (Liss-III on IRS-1C), reported crop areas by sub-district and practised crop calendar information. This resulted in an improved map containing baseline information on both land cover and land use. It is concluded that each defined NDVI class represents a varying but distinct mix of land-cover classes and that the existing land-cover map consists of too many detailed ‘year-specific’ features. Four groups of the NDVI classes present in agricultural areas match well with four categories of practised crop calendars. Differences within a group of NDVI classes reveal area specific variations in cropping intensities. The remaining groups of NDVI classes represent other land-cover complexes. The method illustrated in this article has the potential to be incorporated into remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS)-based drought monitoring systems.

Evaluation of sediment yield by using remote sensing and GIS: A case study from the Phulang Vagu watershed, Nizamabad District (AP), India

The primary objective of this paper is to identify soil erosion zones and to suggest appropriate measures for control of soil erosion using remote sensing, GIS and conventional technique in the Phulang Vagu watershed in the Sriramsagar catchment area of Andhra Pradesh. The digital imagery data of the study area is obtained from the IRS-IC (LISS-III) satellite whereas the toposheets and rainfall data of the study area were obtained from the Survey of India. Satellite images were interpreted to prepare land use/land cover maps by using ERDAS image processing system. Out of 725.983 km 2 of the study area, about 301.435 km 2 is wasteland which is identified as susceptible for soil erosion. Toposheets of the study area were used to prepare drainage and slope maps. Drainage pattern is mainly dendritic with a density of 1.26 km -1 and the stream slope is 0.00614. The arithmetric average method is used to find average annual rainfall. The above parameters were used to calculate the amount of soil erosion from the catchment area. It was found that 882.389 m 3 km -2 year -1 of soil is being eroded from the catchment area which is more than the value adopted in the design of Sriramsagar reservoir. Therefore soil conservation measures such as vegetative cover in the waste land are needed and 12 check dam sites have been proposed by superimposing drainage map and slope map in conjunction with land use/land cover map. With these soil conservation measures, the soil erosion could be kept within the design value of Sriramsagar reservoir.

A climatic assessment of crop potential in Andhra Pradesh

Crop potential under rainfed conditions based on Moisture Availability Index (MAI) and Stored Soil Moisture, (SSM) was assessed for selected stations in Andhra Pradesh. Using MAI, crops of different durations and optimum dates of sowing are indicated. Nizamabad district has the highest crop potential and Anantapur district has the lowest crop potential. In general, coastal districts and northern districts of Telangana have higher crop potential than the remaining districts of Andhra Pladesh.
