Ultrafast laser triggered electron emission from ultrananocrystalline diamond pyramid tip cathode

Nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond [(N)UNCD] pyramid tip cathode has been considered as a next-generation high peak current electron source for dielectric laser accelerators as well as other high peak current particle accelerator applications. In this work, we study non-linear photoemission from an (N)UNCD pyramid tip cathode using an ultrafast laser with the pulse length of 150 fs with the central wavelength of 800 nm in the peak intensity range of 109–1010W/cm2. We demonstrated that as the incident laser intensity increases, the current emitted from the nano-tip first increases as a power function with an exponent of about 5 and then starts to roll over to an exponent of 3. This roll over is attributed to the Coulomb interaction between electrons emitted from the tip also known as the space charge. We also measured the photoemission electron energy spectra that show electrons with energies as high as ∼10 eV. Based on the shape of the electron energy spectra, we conclude that the high-energy electrons are thermally emitted electrons due to ultrafast laser heating at the tip of the (N)UNCD pyramid tip cathode.

(Invited) integration of Microneedles and Electrochemical Sensors for Medical Applications

Microneedles are small-scale devices that may be used for access to interstitial fluid and/or capillary blood for transdermal monitoring of chemicals [1]. In this presentation, the integration of several types of electrochemical sensors with hollow microneedles will be considered. For example, carbon fiber electrodes have been integrated with digital micromirror device-produced microneedles; ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide were detected with these devices [2]. Carbon paste electrodes have also been integrated with digital micromirror device-produced microneedles; electrodes made from rhodium-dispersed carbon paste were used for hydrogen peroxide sensing [3]. In addition, lactate oxidase-modified rhodium-dispersed carbon paste electrodes were demonstrated for lactate sensing, including in the presence of interferents such as ascorbic acid, uric acid, and acetaminophen. A multiplexed microneedle array containing digital micromirror device-produced microneedles was subsequently used for amperometric detection of glucose, lactate, and pH; detection of these analytes in complex media was shown [4]. More recently, digital micromirror device-produced hollow microneedles were modified with a working sensor, which was prepared with graphene ink and 4 (3-Butyl-1-imidazolio)-1-butanesulfonate) ionic liquid. Direct oxidation of fentanyl via square-wave voltammetry was shown; a detection limit of 27.8 μM was demonstrated using this approach [5]. Two photon polymerization has also been used to create hollow microneedles for biosensing; a porous carbon electrode created using interference lithography was used for potassium ion sensing in the presence of interfering sodium ions [6]. In another study, nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond coatings were deposited on Ti –6Al–4V alloy microneedles using microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition; dopamine and uric acid were electrochemically detected in an in vitro study [7]. These studies indicate that microneedles may have utility for minimally invasive detection of analytes in a real time manner. Benefits and disadvantages of the microneedle-based sensing approach as well as efforts needed for clinical translation of microneedle-based sensing technology will be considered.

Noninvasive Salivary Sensor Based on Ferrocene/ZnO/Nitrogen-Incorporated Nanodiamond/Si Heterojunction Nanostructures for Glucose Sensing in Neutral Conditions

The development of a simple and convenient noninvasive salivary glucose sensor to replace the needle-prick blood collection process can not only enhance early detection and diagnosis but also reduce excess medical care costs due to delayed treatment. This study presents a noninvasive sensor based on a ferrocene/ZnO/nitrogen-incorporated nanodiamond/Si heterojunction structure to measure glucose in saliva. The sensing electrode based on a heterojunction structure composed of ferrocene (FC), Bidens-like zinc oxide (b-ZnO), and nitrogen-incorporated ultra-nanocrystalline diamond (NUNCD) films, which is a kind of nitrogen-incorporated nanodiamond, was constructed on a silicon (Si) substrate. Herein, FC and b-ZnO act as a mediator and a specific surface area promoter, respectively, and NUNCD provides a good nucleation site and conducting path. Glucose oxidase (GOx) was introduced into the system to play the role of enzyme to catalyze the reaction and increase the electrode selectivity. The FC/b-ZnO/NUNCD/Si sensor exhibited superior performance in glucose measurements within the linear ranges (1) 20–100 μM (R2 = 0.9717) with a sensitivity of 1125.18 μA/(mM cm2) and (2) 20–600 μM (R2 = 0.9926) with a sensitivity of 804.11 μA/(mM cm2). Additionally, the sensor has a sensitivity of 1012.35 μA/(mM cm2) within the range 50–400 μM (R2 = 0.9912) for artificial saliva.

Quantum efficiency, photoemission energy spectra, and mean transverse energy of ultrananocrystalline diamond photocathode

The quantum efficiency and mean transverse energy of electrons emitted from a cathode determine the quality of beams generated from photoinjectors. The nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond, (N)UNCD, is a new class of robust semiconductor photocathodes, which has been considered in photoinjectors for high peak current extraction. In this work, we measure the spectral response in quantum efficiency, photoemission energy spectra, and mean transverse energy of the (N)UNCD photocathode using a photoemission electron microscope. The observed quantum efficiency was comparable to that of copper photocathodes. Photoemission spectra showed the evidence of scattering of electrons before emission. This relaxation of electrons due to scattering is also observed in the spectral response of the mean transverse energy. The mean transverse energy is limited to ∼70 meV at the threshold. We attribute this to the physical and chemical roughness of the (N)UNCD photocathode and, hence, smoother films will be required to further reduce the mean transverse energy obtained from the (N)UNCD photocathode.

Growth of Nitrogen Incorporated Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Coating on Graphite by Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition.

This article shows the results of experiments to grow Nitrogen incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond (N-UNCD) films on commercial natural graphite (NG)/Cu anodes by hot chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) using a gas mixture of Ar/CH4/N2/H2. The experiments focused on studying the effect of the pressure in the HFCVD chamber, filament-substrate distance, and temperature of the substrate. It was found that a substrate distance of 3.0 cm and a substrate temperature of 575 C were optimal to grow N-UNCD film on the graphite surface as determined by Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and TEM imaging. XPS analysis shows N incorporation through the film. Subsequently, the substrate surface temperature was increased using a heater, while keeping the substrate-filament distance constant at 3.0 cm. In this case, Raman spectra and SEM images of the substrate surface showed a major composition of graphite in the film as the substrate-surface temperature increased. Finally, the process pressure was increased to 10 Torr where it was seen that the growth of N-UNCD film occurred at 2.0 cm at a substrate temperature of 675 C. These results suggest that as the process pressure increases a smaller substrate-filament distance and consequently a higher substrate surface temperature can still enable the N-UNCD film growth by HFCVD. This effect is explained by a mean free path analysis of the main precursors H2 and CH3 molecules traveling from the filament to the surface of the substrate The potential impact of the process developed to grow electrically conductive N-UNCD films using the relatively low-cost HFCVD process is that this process can be used to grow N-UNCD films on commercial NG/Cu anodes for Li-ion batteries (LIBs), to enable longer stable capacity energy vs. charge/discharge cycles.

Human Exhalation CO2 Sensor Based on the PEI-PEG/ZnO/NUNCD/Si Heterojunction Electrode.

Gas sensors based on semiconductors have outstanding sensitivity compared with the oxide-based devices; however, the high operation temperature greatly hinders its development in practical applications. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and the patients with severe COPD with or without exacerbation tend to have airflow obstruction, which results in an increase of CO2 concentration and subsequent hypercapnic respiratory failure. At present, COPD detection relies on professional operation; however, the patients suffer great discomfort during the arterial blood sampling. All these facts reduce patient’s willingness to test their physical health. Thus, noninvasive monitoring of CO2 levels is crucial for the early diagnosis of high-risk COPD patients. A nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond (NUNCD) film exhibits excellent properties in biosensing and polyetherimide-polyethylene glycol (PEI-PEG) polymer possesses a great capability of CO2 capturing. By incorporating NUNCD into PEI-PEG film, this work focuses on ameliorating the sensitivity and selectivity of the present semiconductor CO2 sensor. From the theoretical regression analyses of the experimental results, it is found that the excellent performance of the PEI-PEG/ZnO/NUNCD/Si electrode is contributed by two main reaction layers, the adsorption layer (PEI-PEG) and the electric transfer layer (ZnO/NUNCD). The selectivity is dominated by the PEI-PEG adsorption layer and the sensitivity is directly related to the changes in the work function of the ZnO/NUNCD interface. The high aspect ratio (>10) of the flower-like ZnO structure, growth from ZnO nanoparticles, can provide a more active adsorption area, as a result, extremely enhancing the sensitivity of the CO2 sensor.

Zero-biased and visible-blind UV photodetectors based on nitrogen-doped ultrananocrystalline diamond nanowires

Taking advantage of the superflat surface of ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD), highly precise UNCD nanowire (NW) arrays were fabricated to develop high-performance UV photodetectors. The large surface-to-volume ratio of a nanowire significantly increases the number of surface trap states, and the reduced dimensionality effectively confines the active area of the charge carrier and shortens the transit time, which results in an enhanced photoconductivity and response speed. In this paper, the zero-biased UV photodetectors based on nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond nanowire arrays have been demonstrated and characterized. The estimated responsivity was 2.0 A/W for 350 nm incident light when the device operated at room temperature. The UVA and UVB photocurrent signals from this visible blind photodetector were well defined with a rise and decay time of less than 1 s.

Correlation of zeta potential and contact angle of oxygen and fluorine terminated nitrogen incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond (N-UNCD) thin films

The surface chemistry of nitrogen incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond (N-UNCD) films was altered by plasma treatment utilizing oxygen and fluorine plasma chemistries; the modified N-UNCD surfaces were characterized using contact angle and zeta potential measurements to give a more complete understanding of the interactions between the solid surface and the aqueous solution. The bonding character, surface composition, and morphology of the N-UNCD films before and after surface treatment were also monitored using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy to ensure the grafting of functional groups; the contributing factor to the results was purely from the surface termination.

Cryogenic operation of planar ultrananocrystalline diamond field emission source in SRF injector

Here, we report a demonstration of electron beam generation in a superconducting radio frequency (SRF) Teraelectronvolt Energy Superconducting Linear Accelerator 1.3 GHz gun equipped with a field emission cathode and operated at 2 K. The cathode is a submicrometer film of nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond [(N)UNCD] deposited atop a Nb RRR300 cathode plug that is 4 mm in diameter. Measurements of the output current showed that it increased exponentially as a function of the gun gradient. Our results demonstrate a feasible path toward simplified fully cryogenic SRF injector technology. At a maximal gradient of 0.9 MV/m, a current density of 22 μA/cm2 was obtained [calculated as a 2.75 μA current over the total cathode surface area of π(2 mm)2]. One important finding is that the electron emitter made of (N)UNCD, a material long been known as a highly efficient field emission material, demonstrated a record low turn-on gradient of 0.6 MV/m. A hypothesis explaining this behavior is proposed.

Demonstration of nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond photocathodes in a RF gun environment

Quantum efficiency (QE), intrinsic emittance, and robustness are the three most important figures of merit for photocathodes, the first two determine the ultimate achievable brightness of an electron beam, and the third one directly correlates with the complications of a beamline design. Nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond [(N)UNCD] materials are promising candidates for photocathode applications due to their remarkable electron emission performance as well as the moderate vacuum requirement. Two (N)UNCD photocathodes have been characterized in a realistic RF gun environment with the nicely balanced performance of all three figures of merit. The QE of the first (N)UNCD cathode (stored in air for two years before the test) was found to be 3.8 × 10−4 using a 262 nm UV laser and a cathode surface field of 30 MV/m. It was found that the QE of the second (N)UNCD sample (grown days before the test) was nearly the same and, therefore, demonstrates the exceptional environmental tolerance of the material. The intrinsic emittance of (N)UNCD was measured to be 1.00 μm/mm.

Submicrometer ultrananocrystalline diamond films processed in oxygen and hydrogen plasma and analyzed by UV-vis spectroscopy: Thickness and optical constant results

Results of UV-vis spectroscopy (spectrophotometry) of highly conductive submicrometer nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond, (N)UNCD, processed in technologically important oxygen and hydrogen plasmas are presented for the spectral range of 200–1200 nm. The (N)UNCD films feature high contrast interference. As-grown and etched samples were analyzed using a simple practical analytical optics methodology that allowed for accurate evaluation of film thicknesses and (N)UNCD etching rates. The obtained results were cross-validated using scanning electron microscopy. Reflection simulations based on the Fresnel equations and using the optical constants of the Si substrate provided for evaluation of spectral dependencies of the refractive index and extinction coefficient of (N)UNCD. It was found that the presence of grain boundary sp2 phase causes noticeable extinction (zero for diamond) and slightly changes the refractive index, making its behavior nonmonotonic.

Conducting nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond coating for highly structural stable anode materials in lithium ion battery

In lithium ion battery (LIB), the structural changes and degradation of electrode materials during intercalation/deintercalation, leading to reversible capacity loss and short cycle life, have plagued LIB from advancing forward. In order to overcome these hurdles, a novel conducting nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond (N-UNCD) is proposed to coat on the model electrode material of natural graphite (NG) by microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD), demonstrates the superior improvement on electrode stability. The electrochemical results of the N-UNCD coated NG anode reveal excellent cyclability, rate capability and conductivity over a hundred cycles as compared to the pristine NG. Furthermore, the underlying high structural stability of the N-UNCD coating for the anode material and the failure mechanism of the pristine NG anode is fully elucidated by combining diffraction and imaging techniques based on in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). These results show that the amorphization of NG originates from the accumulation of internal stress by periodic volume changes, which leads to mechanical fading with loss of strength and toughness. However, the N-UNCD film serves as a strong buffer layer to accommodate the volume changes, and also maintains the mechanical integrity of the pristine anode by suppressing from the continuous damage and the thickening of the solid electrolyte interphase during charging/discharging. Optimally, our investigations systematically explain the failure mechanism of the pristine anode and shed light on constructing a high capability and long cycle N-UNCD coated anode for LIBs.

High power conditioning and benchmarking of planar nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond field emission electron source

Planar nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond, (N)UNCD, has emerged as a unique field emission source attractive for accelerator applications because of its capability to generate high charge beam and handle moderate vacuum conditions. Most importantly, (N)UNCD sources are simple to produce: conventional high aspect ratio isolated emitters are not required to be formed on the surface, and the actual emitter surface roughness is on the order of only 100~nm. Careful reliability assessment of (N)UNCD is required before it may find routine application in accelerator systems. In the present study using an L-band normal conducting single-cell rf gun, a (N)UNCD cathode has been conditioned to $\sim$42~MV/m in a well-controlled manner. It reached a maximum output charge of 15~nC corresponding to an average current of 6~mA during an emission period of 2.5~$\mu$s. Imaging of emission current revealed a large number of isolated emitters (density over 100/cm$^{2}$) distributed on the cathode, which is consistent with previous tests in dc environments. The performance metrics, the emission imaging, and the systematic study of emission properties during rf conditioning in a wide gradient range assert (N)UNCD as an enabling electron source for rf injector designs serving industrial and scientific applications. These studies also improve the fundamental knowledge of the practical conditioning procedure via better understanding of emission mechanisms.

Ultra-smooth and hydrophobic nitrogen-incorporated ultranano-crystalline diamond film growth in C-H-O-N gas phase system via microwave plasma CVD

The ultra-smooth surface and hydrophobic nitrogen-incorporated ultra-nano-crystalline diamond (N-UNCD) was directly synthesized by equilibrating the etching effect of OH radical and growth promotion of CN and CH in the 5% CH4 added H2 plasma environment with additional feeding of constant 0.16% O2 and from 0.3% to 3.3% N2 contents. The initially decreasing and then increasing trend of surface roughness, i.e., from as-grown appearance with pits to smooth and then to worm-like surface, was resulted from the offset and even suppressive effect on OH etched holes by the faster growth rate that under the help of more N2 promoted chemical groups of CH and CN. In addition, chemical composition, i.e., the large amount of sp2 phases (sp2/sp3 ratio up to 1.399) and H termination of N-UNCD surface (proportion was 75.54 ± 3.8%), played an another enhancing function for repelling water (contact angle from 81.3° to 93.8°) although the surface roughness decreased to smoothest of 1.36 nm in Root-Mean-Square (RMS) in the presence of N2 addition from 0.3% to 1%. However, continuing adding N2 to 3.3%, the formed surface (RMS 8.98 nm) with worm-like ultra-nano diamond crystallites together with higher H reconstructed sp2 contents (sp2/sp3 ratio rose to 1.478) further boosted the hydrophobicity, at which the contact angle was finally increased to 110.2°. Therefore, in C-H-O-N gas system, ultra-smooth and uniform N-UNCD surface with excellent hydrophobicity can be obtained by a one-step method without any post-treatment.

Theoretical evaluation of electronic density-of-states and transport effects on field emission from n-type ultrananocrystalline diamond films

In the nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond [(N)UNCD] films, representing an n-type highly conductive two-phase material comprised of sp3 diamond grains and sp2-rich graphitic grain boundaries, current is carried by a high concentration of mobile electrons within large-volume grain-boundary networks. Fabricated in a simple thin-film planar form, (N)UNCD was found to be an efficient field emitter capable of emitting a significant amount of charge starting at the applied electric field as low as a few volts per micrometer, which makes it a promising material for designing electron sources. Despite semimetallic conduction, field emission (FE) characteristics of this material demonstrate a strong deviation from the Fowler–Nordheim law in a high-current-density regime when (N)UNCD field emitters switch from a diodelike to a resistorlike behavior. Such a phenomenon resembles the current-density saturation effect in conventional semiconductors. In the present paper, we adapt the formalism developed for conventional semiconductors to study current-density saturation in (N)UNCD field emitters. We provide a comprehensive theoretical investigation of (i) partial penetration of the electric field into the material, (ii) transport effects (such as electric-field-dependent mobility), and (iii) features of a complex density-of-states structure (position and shape of π−π∗ bands, controlling the concentration of charge carriers) on the FE characteristics of (N)UNCD. We show that the formation of the current-density saturation plateau can be explained by the limited supply of electrons within the impurity π−π∗ bands and decreasing electron mobility in a high electric field. Theoretical calculations are consistent with the experiment.

Nitrogen-Incorporated Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Electrodes for Dopamine Determination.

In this paper, nitrogen incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond (NUNCD) films were fabricated for use as electrodes to detect dopamine. The NUNCD electrodes achieved high sensitivity, great selectivity, and excellent detection limits for dopamine sensing. The NUNCD electrode, fabricated as a potential sensitive biosensor for dopamine without any catalyst or mediators, demonstrated good activity for the direct detection of dopamine by simply putting the bare NUNCD electrode into a dopamine solution. Furthermore, the marked selectivity of the NUNCD electrode is very favorable for the determination of dopamine (DA) concentration (0.32 μM) in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). Considering dopamine detection in real biological fluid samples, the NUNCD electrode performed excellently with a detection limit of 0.39 μM and a high recovery ranging from 90-120%, revealing that NUNCD electrodes have promising use in the sensing of dopamine.

An all-diamond X-ray position and flux monitor using nitrogen-incorporated ultra-nanocrystalline diamond contacts.

Diamond X-ray detectors with conducting nitrogen-incorporated ultra-nanocrystalline diamond (N-UNCD) films as electrodes were fabricated to measure X-ray beam flux and position. Structural characterization and functionality tests were performed for these devices. The N-UNCD films grown on unseeded diamond substrates were compared with N-UNCD films grown on a seeded silicon substrate. The feasibility of the N-UNCD films acting as electrodes for X-ray detectors was confirmed by the stable performance in a monochromatic X-ray beam. The fabrication process is able to change the surface status which may influence the signal uniformity under low bias, but this effect can be neglected under full collection bias.

Nanodiamond Thin Film Field Emitter Cartridge for Miniature High-Gradient Radio Frequency ${X}$ -Band Electron Injector

The complete design, fabrication, and performance evaluation of a compact, single cell, $X$-band ($\sim$9 GHz) electron injector based on a field emission cathode (FEC) are presented. A pulsed electron beam is generated by a 10's of kW radiofrequency (RF) magnetron signal from a plug-in thin film nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond (N)UNCD FEC cartridge. Testing of the $X$-band injector with the (N)UNCD FEC was conducted in a beamline equipped with a solenoid, Faraday cup and imaging screen. The results show that typically the (N)UNCD FEC cartridge produces $\gtrsim$1 mA/cm$^2$ at a surface electric field of 28 MV/m. The diameter of the output beam generated from the 4.4 mm diameter (N)UNCD cartridge can be as small as 1 mm. In terms of its practical applications, the demonstrated $X$-band electron injector with the (N)UNCD plug-in FEC can serve as a source for X-ray generation, materials processing, travelling-wave tubes (including GHz and THz backward wave oscillators), or can be used to drive slow-wave accelerating structures. The results presented also suggest that this field emitter technology based on planar (N)UNCD thin films, which are simply grown on the surface of optically polished stainless steel, can enable a vast number of device configurations that are efficient, flexible in design, and can be packaged with ease.

Locally Resolved Electron Emission Area and Unified View of Field Emission from Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Films.

In this paper, we study the effect of the actual, locally resolved, field emission area on electron emission characteristics of uniform planar conductive nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond ((N)UNCD) field emitters. High resolution imaging experiments were carried out in a field emission microscope with a specialty imaging anode screen such that electron emission micrographs were taken concurrently with measurements of I-V characteristics. An automated image processing algorithm was applied to process the extensive imaging data sets and calculate the emission area per image. It was routinely found that field emission from as-grown planar (N)UNCD films was always confined to a counted number of discrete emitting centers across the surface, which varied in size and electron emissivity. It was established that the actual field emission area critically depends on the applied electric field and that the field emission area and overall electron emissivity improve with the sp2-fraction present in the film, irrespective of the original substrate roughness or morphology. Most importantly, when as-measured I-E characteristics were normalized by the electric field-dependent emission area, the resulting j-E curves demonstrated a strong kink and departed from the Fowler-Nordheim law, finally saturating at a value on the order of 100 mA/cm2. This value was nearly identical for all studied films regardless of substrate. It was concluded that the saturation value is specific to the intrinsic fundamental properties of (N)UNCD.

Long-Life Silicon/Graphite Anode with Nano Carbon Coatings for Lithium Ion Battery - Graphene Nanowalls and Nitrogen Incorporated Ultrananocrystalline Diamond

Although lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have been used in many consumer and industrial products, the energy storage capacity per volume/weight and the battery cycling lifetime have much room for further improvement. This is especially challenging for high demanding applications such as long-range electric vehicles, and smart grid renewable energy storage. Among LIB anode materials, graphite is the most common one in the market today. Many novel anode materials have been studied in pursuit of much higher battery energy storage capacity for a given volume and weight. Among them, silicon is the most attractive one which theoretically is capable of storing more than ten times of energy than that of graphite anode for the same anode weight. However, silicon suffers from extensive volume expansion and shrinkage by about 400% when it cycles through fully charged and discharged states. The volume difference leads to breakage of silicon particles and the loss of their electrical contacts to the current collector and thus its capability of further discharging and charging. On the other hand, graphite has a layered structure, which suffers from breakage between adjacent layers into smaller pieces and thus possibly loses the capability of broken apart small graphite pieces in charging and discharging. Therefore, technologies for preventing aforementioned huddles against achieving long-life and high-capacity LIBs are highly desirable. Novel electrically conductive ultrananocrystalline diamond, graphene nanowalls, and diamond-graphene hybrid nano-carbon coatings have been applied by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique to graphite and silicon based LIB anodes and achieved much longer cycling lifetime compared to those without such nano carbon coatings. This paper will present the nano-carbon coating processes, materials characterization, LIB fabrication processes, and the characterization of LIB half cells which demonstrates enhance lifetime and charge storage capacity.
