Luminescence from columnar electron-ion recombination following α-particle and fission fragment ionization of an argon-nitrogen gas mixture is detected and an estimate of the period for recombination made. In the presence of an electric field, a decrease in particle scintillation pulse-height from a photomultiplier tube is attributed to a loss of recombination luminescence by ion collection. The relative variation in the magnitude of this decrease with photomultiplier clipping time constant indicates that recombination occurs within 10-7 sec for α-particles in A + 6% N2 at two atmospheres pressure.
