Predicting aeration time and nitrite accumulation rate variations for Partial Nitritation: A model incorporating nitrogen oxidation rate dynamics

This study aimed to develop a two-step nitrification model to predict variations in aeration time and nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) under fluctuating operational conditions in mainstream partial nitritation (PN) processes. Lab-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were used to evaluate the ammonia oxidation rate (AOR) and nitrite oxidation rate (NOR) under different solids retention times (SRT) (10, 15, 20, 30, and 50 days) and total volumetric nitrogen loadings (TVNL) (20–60 mg N/L per cycle). A static model was developed to predict consistent AOR and NOR values in the steady state, whereas a dynamic model was established to capture the growth dynamics of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) under unsteady-state conditions. The static model accurately predicted the AOR, NOR, and aeration time at steady state. The dynamic model quantified the relationship between specific growth rates (μ) and food-to-microorganism ratios (F/M) through exponential fitting, successfully capturing AOB and NOB growth dynamics. Validation experiments (SRT = 10 d, TVNL = 60 mg/L per cycle) demonstrated the ability of the dynamic model to predict trends in NAR and aeration time accurately. This study emphasizes the importance of accurately modeling AOR and NOR variations to predict aeration time and NAR, thereby providing valuable insights for aeration control and precise management of AOB and NOB populations in mainstream PN processes.

Feasibility of double nitrite supply through partial nitrification and partial denitrification driven by sludge fermentation

Challenges in obtaining stable nitrite have impeded the use of anammox in municipal wastewater treatment. This study explored the feasibility of using sludge fermentation products as carbon source and selective nitrification inhibitor to supply nitrite via partial nitrification (PN) and partial denitrification (PD). PD was initiated within 15 days, achieving nitrite transformation rate of over 90 % with a carbon/nitrogen ratio of 3 and a reaction time of 0.75 h. The dominant genus, Romboutsia, increased in relative abundance from 4.1 to 35 %. Organic acids in sludge fermentation products, like acetate (200 mg/L) and propionate (400 mg/L), selectively suppressed nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) more than ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), leading to PN. Combining anaerobic exposure with sludge fermentation products addition achieved PN with over 80.0 % nitrite accumulation. AOB increased tenfold in the long term, significantly outpacing NOB growth. This strategy simplifies difficulty of anammox application and shows broad application potential in municipal wastewater treatment.

Ammonium oxidation from concentrated synthetic wastewater and landfill leachate using partial nitritation in sequencing batch reactor.

Partial nitritation (PN) is a novel treatment for nitrogen removal using aerobic ammonium oxidation with reduced oxygen requirements compared to conventional nitrification. This study evaluated the performance of the PN process and the factors influencing nitrogen removal from landfill leachate. During the reactivation of biomass, the results showed 70% ammonium removal, but only 20% total nitrogen removal. Further analysis showed that low nitrite accumulation and high nitrate production promoted the growth of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). The ammonium removal activity after soaking the cultivated biomass in synthetic water and leachate was measured to be 0.57, 0.1, 0.17, and 0.25 g N•g VSS-1•d-1 for synthetic wastewater and leachate soaking for synthetic wastewater, 12 h, 3days, and 7days, respectively. The study found abundant ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and NOBs in biomass soaked in synthetic wastewater. However, soaking in leachate promoted AOB growth and inhibited NOB growth making leachate suitable for PN. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The study found that with a longer leachate-soaking period for biomass, ammonium removal activity increases, which in turn increases ammonium conversions during the PN process. Ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) can acclimate to landfill leachate substrate and grow with a longer soaking period. Nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were inhibited by landfill leachate substrate, which is beneficial for nitrite accumulation. Anabolized DO can convert nitrite to nitrate rapidly, which results in higher nitrate accumulation compared to nitrite accumulation. Hence, the DO level has to be sufficiently low to prevent nitrite oxidation and nitrate accumulation.

Urea Fertilization Significantly Promotes Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Agricultural Soils and Is Attributed to the Short-Term Suppression of Nitrite-Oxidizing Bacteria during Urea Hydrolysis.

The application of urea in agricultural soil significantly boosts nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. However, the reason for nitrite accumulation, the period of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) suppression, and the main NOB species for nitrite removal behind urea fertilization have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, four laboratory microcosm experiments were conducted to simulate urea fertilization in agricultural soils. We found that within 36 h of urea application, nitrite oxidation lagged behind ammonia oxidation, leading to nitrite accumulation and increased N2O emissions. However, after 36 h, NOB activity recovered and then removed nitrite, leading to reduced N2O emissions. Urea use resulted in an N2O emission rate tenfold higher than ammonium. During incubation, Nitrobacter-affiliated NOB growth decreased initially but increased later with urea use, while Nitrospira-affiliated NOB appeared unaffected. Chlorate suppression of NOB lasted longer, increasing N2O emissions. Urease inhibitors effectively reduced N2O emissions by slowing urea hydrolysis and limiting free ammonia production, preventing short-term NOB suppression. In summary, short-term NOB suppression during urea hydrolysis played a crucial role in increasing N2O emissions from agricultural soils. These findings revealed the reasons behind the surge in N2O emissions caused by extensive urea application and provided guidance for reducing N2O emissions in agricultural production processes.

High ammonia loading rate and biofilm reattachment initiated partial nitrification and anammox in a membrane aerated biofilm reactor

Inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) is important for efficient wastewater treatment via anammox. Here, a novel strategy was demonstrated, which based on the detachment and reattachment of the biofilm to establish partial nitrification and anammox in a membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR). The results showed that using free ammonia as the sole inhibitor to start up partial nitrification took more time, and NOB acclimated to the free ammonia inhibition. Detaching the biofilm made it possible for free ammonia to contact NOB in deeper zones of the biofilm while at the same time washing NOB out of the reactor. Nitrite accumulation efficiency (NAE) increased to 70 % in 50 days when both high ammonia loading and biofilm reattachment were applied. With a short hydraulic retention time and high concentrations of ammonia and nitrite, anammox activity appeared in the reactor and resulted in a nitrogen removal efficiency of 60 %. Microbial community analysis indicated that Nitrosomonas, Nitrospira, and Candidatus Brocadia were the main functional taxa. Anaerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) proliferated within the biofilm, inhibiting NOB growth by competing for nitrite. Endogenous denitrifying bacteria also grew, coexisting with AnAOB. Predicted abundance of genes related to fermentation correlated with those involved in denitrification, indicating the possibility of heterotrophic denitrification. These findings help further our understanding of biofilm control-based strategies for NOB management and have implications for establishing autotrophic nitrogen removal using MABRs.

The successful application of light to the system of simultaneous nitrification/endogenous denitrification and phosphorus removal: Promotion of partial nitrification and glycogen accumulation metabolism

Partial nitrification (PN) and high glycogen accumulating metabolism (GAM) activity are the basis for efficient nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal in simultaneous nitrification endogenous denitrification and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) systems. However, achieving these processes in practical operations is challenging. This study proposes that light irradiation is a novel strategy to enhance the nutrient removal performance of the SNDPR system with low carbon to nitrogen ratios (C/N of 3.3–4.1) domestic wastewater. Light energy densities (Es) of 55–135 J/g VSS were found to promote the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and GAM, while inhibiting the activity of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and polyphosphate accumulating metabolism (PAM). Long-term exposure to different light patterns at Es of 55–135 J/g VSS revealed that continuous light rapidly achieved PN by inhibiting NOB activity and promoted the growth of glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs), allowing the removal of above 82 % N and below 80 % P. Intermittent light maintained stable PN by inhibiting the activity and growth of NOB and promoted the growth of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) with high GAM activity (Accmulibacer IIC-ii and IIC-iii), allowing the removal of above 82 % N and 95 % P. Flow cytometry and enzyme activity assays showed that light promoted GAM-related enzyme activity and the metabolic activity of partial Accmulibacer II over other endogenous denitrifying bacteria, while inhibiting NOB translation activity. These findings provide a new approach for enhancing nutrient removal, especially for achieving PN and promoting GAM activity, in SNDPR systems treating low C/N ratio domestic wastewater using light irradiation.

Ecophysiological characterization of a nitrite-oxidizing bacterial culture from a freshwater aquaculture pond

Nitrite is harmful to aquatic animals in freshwater pond aquaculture environments. Nitrite is oxidized to nitrate mainly by nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). NOB may be promising in the control of nitrite concentration in aquaculture water. To better understand the role of NOB in the nitrogen cycling process of freshwater aquaculture ponds, we describe the characterization of NOB by using a culture derived from a freshwater aquaculture pond. Analysis by 16S rRNA sequence alignment showed that the NOB in the culture belong to the genus Nitrospira, whose generation time and nitrite–oxidizing rate were 9.87 h and 4.63 (± 0.07) pg NO2 −–N cell−1·h−1 in the exponential growth phase, respectively. The oxidation of nitrite could be inhibited completely when the concentration of dissolved oxygen was 1.0 ± 0.5 mg/L.−1 The NOB could oxidize nitrite into nitrate at 29.84‰ salinity. However, the nitrification rate decreased significantly with an increase in salinity concentration ranging from 5.72‰ to 29.84‰. The optimal temperature range was 25–37 °C for the growth of NOB, and activity significantly decreased when the temperature was below 20 °C or reached 40 °C. In this study, the initial pH 6 ± 0.1–8 ± 0.1 was not observed to affect the nitrification activity of the NOB culture. Illumination of 410 ± 10 nm can completely inhibit NOB nitrification, and 520 ± 10 nm illumination partially inhibits NOB, whereas 660 ± 10 nm illumination has no effect. These findings indicate that the degree of photoinhibition in NOB increases with decreasing wavelength.

Successful mainstream nitritation through NOB inactivation

The development of new wastewater treatment processes can assist in reducing the impact of wastewater treatment on the environment. The recently developed partial nitritation anammox (PNA) process, for example, consumes less energy for aeration and reduces nitrate in the effluent without requiring additional organic carbon. However, achieving stable nitritation (ammonium oxidation; NH4+ → NO2−) at mainstream conditions (T = 10–25 °C, C:N > 10, influent ammonium < 50 mgNH4-N/L and effluent < 1 mgNH4-N/L) remains challenging. This study explores the potential and mechanism of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) suppression in a bottom-fed sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Two bench-scale (11 L) reactors and a pilot-scale reactor (8 m3) were operated for over a year and were fed with organic substrate depleted municipal wastewater. Initially, nitratation (nitrite oxidation; NO2− → NO3−) occurred occasionally until an anaerobic phase was integrated into the operating cycle. The introduction of the anaerobic phase effectively suppressed the regrowth of NOB while nitritation was stable over 300 days, down to 8 °C and at ammonium influent concentrations < 25 mgNH4-N/L. Batch experiments and process data revealed that parameters typically affecting NOB growth (e.g., dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, trace elements, lag-phase after anoxia, free nitrous acid (FNA), free ammonia (FA), pH, sulfide, or solids retention time (SRT)) could not fully explain the suppression of nitratation. Experiments in which fresh nitrifying microbial biomass was added to the nitritation system indicated that NOB inactivation explained NOB suppression better than NOB washout at high SRT. This study concludes that bottom-fed SBRs with anaerobic phases allow for stable nitritation over a broad range of operational parameters. Coupling this type of SBR to an anammox reactor can enable efficient mainstream anammox-based wastewater treatment.

NOB suppression strategies in a mainstream membrane aerated biofilm reactor under exceptionally low lumen pressure

Integrating the aeration-efficient membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) could yield further reduction in energy in wastewater treatment facilities. However, nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) suppression remained challenging due to the absence of intrinsic inhibition factors in mainstream conditions. This study investigated selective NOB suppression strategies in MABR under <5 kPa lumen pressure. Three MABRs were seeded from different seeding sludge, and operated under various ammonium loading rates, aeration pressure, and temporary inhibitory shock conditions. The three reactors were operated for 170–456 days depending on studied parameters. The results showed that higher ammonium loading could create a substrate-oxygen imbalance and quickly contain emergent NOB activity when aeration pressure was not excessive. In addition, lowering of aeration pressure reversed nitrite oxidizing activities without affecting ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Cultivating partial nitritation biofilm under zero positive aeration pressure slowed down the growth of NOB yet resulted in self-induced anammox activities. With the aid of temporary free ammonia (FA)/free nitrous acid (FNA) treatment, full-nitrifying biofilm could be transformed to stable partial nitritation biofilm. More than 84% nitrite accumulation ratio (NAR) was sustained during stable operation in each reactor together with an ammonium removal rate of more than 100 mg-N/L/d. Microbial analysis revealed that Nitrosomonas was the main AOB taxon in the three reactors while K-strategist Nitrospira showed presence despite low nitrite oxidizing activities. Under zero positive pressure, proliferation of Nitrospira was much slower while Candidatus Brocadia was self-induced. Furthermore, Nitrospira showed downturn after temporary inhibition treatment.

Inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in automatic recycling PN/ANAMMOX under mainstream conditions

At present, sustainable and stable partial nitrification has not been widely achieved in the mainstream PN/ANAMMOX process. Here, the feasibility of sustainable and stable partial nitrification was demonstrated in automatic recycling PN/ANAMMOX reactor under mainstream conditions using both simulation and experimental methods. Stable nitrite accumulation in the aerobic zone could be achieved via regulating dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations and sludge retention time (SRT). The DO concentrations required for the repression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were lower at longer SRTs. The DO concentrations and SRTs required for NOB repression were lower at lower temperatures. However, NOB repression was diminished by a persistent low DO and short SRT under mainstream conditions. With the introduction of automatic recycling, sustainable and stable partial nitrification was achieved. Effluent recycling could limit the nitrite-nitrogen required for NOB growth. Collectively, effluent recycling may serve as a feasible and useful strategy for NOB inhibition during the PN/ANAMMOX process.

Suppression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria under the combined conditions of high free ammonia and low dissolved oxygen concentrations for mainstream partial nitritation

Abstract The possibility of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) suppression in mainstream wastewater (COD/N of 6.0, ammonia of approximately 50 mg N L−1) was investigated by controlling the ratio of dissolved oxygen to total ammoniacal nitrogen (DO/TAN) in a continuous suspended sludge reactor without prior COD removal. It was found that a combination of high free ammonia (FA) of approximately 20 mg N L−1 and low dissolved oxygen (DO) of 0.3 ± 0.1 mg L−1 (DO/TAN ratio of 0.003) established in the start-up period was an efficient way to inhibit the growth of NOB. The activity of NOB was more inhibited as FA concentration increased, particularly at the initial ammonia concentration of 175 mg N L−1 (FA of about 20 mg N L−1) Then, the influent ammonia was lower to 50 ± 2 mg N L − 1 (FA of 4.9 ± 0.2 mg N L−1), a typical nitrogen concentration of mainstream wastewater. After four months of operation, mainstream partial nitritation (PN) became stable with nitrite accumulation ratio over 87% and COD removal of above 94% (effluent COD of 18.4 mg L−1). Besides, the effluent NO 2 − -N/NH3-N ratio was 1.22 ± 0.12, which was suitable for the subsequent anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reaction. The relative abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) (e.g., Nitrosomonas) was 15 times higher than NOB. The abundance (0.3%) of Nitrospira (k-strategist NOB) was insignificant, while Nitrobacter (r-strategist NOB) and Nitrotoga (NOB) were not detected during the steady state of PN under low nitrogen load because NOB was suppressed and washed out of the reactor by the condition of extremely low DO/TAN ratio in the start-up period. Thus, it was noted that NOB suppression for stable PN could be accomplished by providing high FA and low DO concentrations, especially in the early stage.

Inactivation kinetics of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria by free nitrous acid

Recent studies have shown that free nitrous acid (FNA, i.e., HNO2) is biocidal to many microorganisms, promoting the development of FNA-based technology in biological wastewater treatment. Suppression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) is a critical step for autotrophic nitrogen removal via anammox. In this study, the biocidal effect of FNA on NOB was determined by developing a model methodology combined with NOB incubation. Sixteen groups of FNA exposure tests were conducted at five different FNA concentrations from 0 to 4 mg HNO2-N/L, obtained from three pH values (5.0, 5.5 and 6.0) with nitrite ranged from 21 to 1680 mg NO2−-N/L, with one as a control. Nitrate production curves were tracked during incubations of the FNA-exposed sludge, and then used to estimate active NOB concentrations by the kinetic model-based fitting. The results showed that with 24-hour exposure to FNA at a level of over 1 mg HNO2-N/L, the active NOB decreased around two orders of magnitude compared with that in the primordial sludge. The Weibull model can well describe the biocidal effect, which would be useful for the optimization of FNA conditions. The maximum NOB growth rate was increased after FNA exposure. This result suggests that long-term implementation of FNA-based technology can select fast-growing NOB in activated sludge, causing a ‘NOB adaptation’ issue.

Start-up of oxygen-limited autotrophic partial nitrification-anammox process for treatment of nitrite-free wastewater in a single-stage hybrid bioreactor

ABSTRACT This study presents effective ammonium removal from nitrite-free ammonium-rich synthetic wastewater through combined partial nitrification (PN) and anammox processes in a multi-zone hybrid airlift bioreactor (BioCAST). Removal efficiencies of ammonia-nitrogen and total nitrogen up to 85.6% and 81.2%, respectively, were achieved shortly after the start-up of bioreactor treating the nitrite-free ammonium-rich synthetic wastewater with ammonium concentrations of 10–350 mg/L. The hybrid (containing suspended and attached biomass) and multi-zone design of the bioreactor with different dissolved oxygen levels, along with the inoculation with anammox-containing sludge were the main factors in the successful start-up of the bioreactor. Nitrate accumulation problem due to the fast growth of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in the bioreactor was controlled by two operating strategies including lowering the HRT from 4 days to 2 days and controlling the dissolved oxygen concentration in the aerobic zone of the bioreactor between 0.9 and 1.2 mg/L. Moreover, the 16S rRNA gene analysis confirmed that the partial nitrification of ammonia to nitrite occurred by Nitrosomonas sp. primarily in the suspended biomass in the aerobic zone, while the conversion of nitrite to N2 occurred by Candidatus Brocadia species in the anoxic zone. This study showed the effective removal of ammonium from a nitrite-free wastewater by providing a proper HRT, controlling the DO concentration between 0.9 and 1.2 mg/L in the aerobic zone, and preventing biomass loss using both suspended and attached microbial cultures in different zones of the bioreactor.

Inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacterial activity based on low nitrite concentration exposure in an auto-recycling PN-Anammox process under mainstream conditions

For municipal wastewater with low temperature and ammonium, conventional oxygen-limited have difficulty achieving long-term stable inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and stable nitritation. So a partial nitrification-anaerobic ammonium oxidation integrated reactor with independent partitions was used to investigate the feasibility of adding an auto-recycling system to promote low exposure of nitrite in the aerobic zone and to inhibit the NOB activity. The results showed that nitrite produced in the aerobic zone could be timely transported to the anaerobic zone for Anammox utilization, and the nitrite nitrogen concentration was diluted to keep within 1 mg/L in the aerobic zone by the effluent recycling. NOB growth was inhibited by nitrite deficiency. The maximum nitrogen removal rate of the reactor was 0.29 kg/(m3·d), and the nitrate nitrogen production rate of NOB was controlled within 0.04 kg/(m3·d). Nitrosomonas and Candidatus Kuenenia were found as functional species of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and Anammox bacteria, respectively.

This study focused on the second step of nitrification, which is carried out by a distinct group of organisms, nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). The growth of NOB is characterized by nitrite oxidation kinetics, which we investigated for 4 pure cultures of marine NOB (Nitrospina watsonii 347, Nitrospira sp. Ecomares 2.1, Nitrococcus mobilis 231, and Nitrobacter sp. 311). We further compared the kinetics to those of non-marine species because substrate concentrations in marine environments are comparatively low, which likely influences kinetics and highlights the importance of this study. We also determined the isotope effect during nitrite oxidation of a pure culture of Nitrospina (Nitrospina watsonii 347) belonging to one of the most abundant marine NOB genera, and for a Nitrospira strain (Nitrospira sp. Ecomares 2.1). The enzyme kinetics of nitrite oxidation, described by Michaelis-Menten kinetics, of 4 marine genera are rather narrow and fall in the low end of half-saturation constant (Km) values reported so far, which span over 3 orders of magnitude between 9 and >1000 µM NO2-. Nitrospina has the lowest Km (19 µM NO2-), followed by Nitrobacter (28 µM NO2-), Nitrospira (54 µM NO2-), and Nitrococcus (120 µM NO2-). The isotope effects during nitrite oxidation by Nitrospina watsonii 347 and Nitrospira sp. Ecomares 2.1 were 9.7 ± 0.8 and 10.2 ± 0.9‰, respectively. This confirms the inverse isotope effect of NOB described in other studies; however, it is at the lower end of reported isotope effects. We speculate that differences in isotope effects reflect distinct nitrite oxidoreductase (NXR) enzyme orientations. High-Rate Partial Nitritation of Municipal Wastewater after Psychrophilic Anaerobic Pretreatment.

Partial nitritation/anammox can provide energy-efficient nitrogen removal from the main stream of municipal wastewater. The main bottleneck is the growth of nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) at low temperatures (<15 °C). To produce effluent suitable for anammox, real municipal wastewater after anaerobic pretreatment was treated by enriched ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in suspended sludge SBR at 12 °C. NOB were continually washed out using aerobic duration control strategy (ADCS). Solids retention time was set to 9-16 days. Using this approach, average ammonia conversion higher than 57% at high oxidation rate of 0.4 ± 0.1 kg-N kg-VSS-1 d-1 was achieved for more than 100 days. Nitrite accumulation (N-NO2-/N-NOX) of 92% was maintained. Thus, consistently small amounts of present NOB were efficiently suppressed. Our mathematical model explained how ADCS enhanced the inhibition of NOB growth via NH3 and HNO2. This approach will produce effluent suitable for anammox even under winter conditions in mild climates.

On-site nutrient recovery and removal from source-separated urine by phosphorus precipitation and short-cut nitrification-denitrification

Source separation and treatment of human urine have been recognized as a resource-efficient alternative to conventional urban drainage, not only reducing nutrient loads on municipal wastewater treatment plants, but recovering valuable resources from waste streams. In this work, on-site phosphorus (P) recovery from real urine was carried out by using the brine from a reverse osmosis process as the flush water for urine-diverting toilets and a P precipitant, while nitrogen (N) was removed via short-cut nitrification-denitrification (SCND) in a membrane bioreactor (MBR). More than 90% of P was recovered by mixing the urine with reverse osmosis brine (1:1, v/v) under the condition of pH > 9.0. The recovered precipitates contained 10–15% of P and can potentially be reused for phosphate fertilizer production. Stable SCND was achieved in a MBR, and 45% of N was removed with the organic compounds in urine as the electron donor for denitrification. Methanol addition significantly elevated denitrification, which in turn replenished the alkalinity required for nitrification. More than 99% of P, 90% of organics and 90% of N were removed in the combined precipitation and MBR process. Nitrosomonas was observed to be the predominant ammonium-oxidizing bacteria, while nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were absent in the microbial communities as revealed by fluorescence in situ hybridization and pyrosequencing technique. High concentrations of free ammonia and nitrite acids, as well as low dissolved oxygen, are the prevailing factors to inhibit the growth of NOB, which allows for stable operation of SCND in the MBR.

Operational conditions for successful partial nitrification in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) based on process kinetics

ABSTRACTThe objective of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the performance of partial nitrification in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using kinetic models. During the 4-month operation, dissolved oxygen (DO) and influent ammonia concentration were selected as operating variables to evaluate nitrite accumulation. Stable partial nitrification was observed with two conditions, influent ammonia concentration of 190 mg N/L and a DO of 0.6–3.0 mg/L as well as influent ammonia concentration of 100 mg N/L and a DO of 0.15–2.0 mg/L with intermittent aeration. At a DO of 0.6–3.0 mg O2/L and influent ammonia concentration of 90 mg N/L, nitrite-oxidizing bacteria growth was not suppressed. Kinetic parameters were determined or estimated with batch tests and model simulation. The kinetic model predicted the SBR performance well.

Experimentation and mathematical models for partial nitrification in aerobic granular sludge process

In this study, the characteristics partial nitrifying biomass in the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) for aerobic granulation was investigated based on experiments and simulation modeling. The reactor operation was carried out at high concentration of ammonium (200~850 mg N/L) which favored Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB) growth over Nitrite-Oxidizing Bacteria (NOB) growth. In partial nitrifying granulation, both Free Ammonia (FA) and Free Nitrous Acid (FNA) simultaneously influenced the activity of NOB much more than that of AOB. According to the simulation results, thE Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentration and oxygen affinity affect the growth competition and can influence the species that are predominant in the reactor. Both AOB and NOB can have growth potential under toxicants (FA and FNA) inhibition and limited oxygen condition. The AOB growth forms inner part of granule's biofilm, but the NOB growth does not engage in the formation of granules.
