Studies on cadmium complexes of nitrilotriacetic acid

The synthesis of 1:1 and 1:2 chelates of cadmium with nitrilotriacetic acid is reported. The 1:1 chelate, in the acid form, is readily converted into its 1:2 counterpart. Structural information on the chelates may be obtained from infrared spectroscopy, the carboxyl stretching vibrations being especially sensitive to bonding type. The sodium salt of the 1:1 chelate undergoes decomposition at the pH of human gastric juice.

The complexes of bismuth(III) and nitrilotriacetic acid

The reaction between bismuth(III) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA or H 3X) has been investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. It has been established that bismuth(III) and NTA form two complexes with compositions bismuth(III): NTA = 1:1 and 1:2. The absorption maxima are at 243 nm (1:1) and 271 nm (1:2), the molar absorptivities being 8.00 × 10 3 and 8.20 × 10 3 l.mole −1.cm −1 respectively. The stability constants (at μ = 1.0) are: log β BiX = 17.53 ± 0.06 and log β B 2 3− = 26.56 ± 0.07. The possibility of the analytical application of BiX is briefly discussed.

Vanadium(III) complexes of nitrilotriacetic acid

Complexes of trivalent vanadium with nitriloacetic acid, NTA(H 3X) were studied in aqueous solution and in the solid state. The stability constants of the complexes VX and VX 2 3− were determined and their logarithms at 20°C and I = 0·1 were found to be log K VX = 13·41 ± 0·08; log K VX 2 = 8·68 ± 0·02. Crystalline complexes VX · 7H 2O and Cs 3VX 2 were prepared and from the investigation of their properties, conclusions were drawn regarding their molecular structure in solid state and in solution.

Preparation and properties of iron(III) complexes of nitrilotriacetic acid and trans-1,2-cyclohexane-diaminetetra-acetic acid

The synthesis to trihydrogen diaquo bis (nitrilotriacetato) ferrate, ethylenediammonium bis (monoaquo trans-1,2-cyclohexane-diaminetetraacetato ferrate) dihydrate, and barium bis (monoaquo trans-1,2-cyclohexanediaminetetracetato ferrate) hexahydrate are reported. These compounds are characterized by pH titration, infrared spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, Mössbauer spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. Although the iron(III) in all of these compounds is found to be hepta coordinated, the nitrilotriacetic acid chelate appears to be polymeric in nature.

The Kinetics and Mechanism of Iron(III) Exchange between Chelates and Transferrin: I. THE COMPLEXES OF CITRATE AND NITRILOTRIACETIC ACID

Abstract The rate at which iron(III) is transferred from various chelating agents to the metal-binding sites in human transferrin is a function of the chemical nature of the complexing agent. Although equilibrium concentrations are related to the magnitude of the relative stability constants, the kinetics of transfer appears to be regulated by steric factors. The time required for equimolar concentrations of three typical chelates to half-saturate the sites is nitrilotriacetate, 3 sec; citrate, 8 hours; ethylenediaminetetraacetate, about 4 days. The kinetics of ferric citrate transfer is complicated by the polynuclear behavior of this chelate. At a citrate to iron ratio of 1:1, the rate-limiting step of the metal binding is depolymerization to a low molecular weight, reactive complex. At ratios above 20:1, polymerization is suppressed by the formation of ferric dicitrate, which reacts rapidly with the protein to release the metal via the formation of a reactive ferric citrate complex. A reaction sequence is proposed involving the formation of a ternary complex of chelate-iron-transferrin as an intermediate. Ionic Fe(III) does not appear to be involved in the transfer.

Thermodynamics of the formation of the 1:1 complexes of nitrilotriacetic acid and rare earth ions

The heats of formation at 20°C of the 1:1 complexes of the rare earths with NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid) have been measured with high relative precision. The method used consists in simultaneously reacting the magnesium-NTA complex with lanthanum ions in one compartment of a differential calorimeter, and the same amount of the magnesium complex with the same amount of the ions of another rare earth in the other compartment. ΔH for the formation of the NTA complexes varies quite smoothly with the atomic number of the rare earth, passing first through a minimum and then through a maximum. It is considered that this trend is not connected with ligand field splittings but derives from two opposing effects brought about by the lanthanide contraction, in that on proceeding from lanthanum to lutecium there is general tendency towards an increasingly exothermic interaction of the rare earth ions with the ligands, which in the middle of the series is offset by a change in the state of hydration of the ions. The following ancillary measurements at 20°C have also been made: the heat of formation of the magnesium-NTA complex; the heat content change for the ionization of the last proton from NTA; and the heat of ionization of water (at ionic strengths of 0·1 and 0·01).

A polarographic study of iron(III)-nitrilotriacetic acid complex

A two-stepped kinetic wave was obtained above pH 4.1 in the reduction of an iron(III)-NTA complex in the presence of excess NTA in acetate buffer solution. The electrode process of the first wave which was controlled by the rate of dissociation of Fe(III)X complex, was reversible and represented a 1-electron change; the formation constant, K FeX, was calculated to be 10 16.01. The second wave was also kinetic and its electrode process was irreversible and represented a 2-electron change. A relation between the rate constant, g, of the electron transfer reaction, and potential was deduced and it was found that the Fe(II)HX complex would be reduced directly.
