Passivation of nickel in sulfuric acid solutions during its polarization by direct current in the region of mixed potentials

This article discusses physicochemical investigations into the electrode passivation of metallic nickel in a sulfuric acid solution (100 g/L, 20°C) during its polarization by direct current. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it has been established that a layer of nickel hydrosulfate of the composition Ni(OH)0.95(SO4)0.53 forms in the region of potentials from −1.0 to −0.2 V on the reaction surface of a metal electrode.

Apparent Activation Energy of the Anodic Dissolution of Nickel in Sulfuric Acid Solutions in the Presence of Cl–and CNS–Ions

Apparent activation energies W of the anodic dissolution of nickel in 0.5 M H2SO4 are determined with the use of temperature-kinetic method at certain assumptions in a wide range of potential values E. The effect of the nature of anion-activator on the character of the W = f(E) dependence is revealed. The data obtained are interpreted in terms of the concept of hard and soft acids and bases.

Study of dissolution mechanisms of nickel in sulfuric acid solution by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance

Investigations of nickel dissolution in sulfuric acid solution have been performed by using an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). The anodic polarization curve of electrodeposited nickel shows distinct three dissolution regions, i.e. two active dissolution regions at low anodic overvoltages and the transpassive dissolution region at high anodic overvoltages. The comparison of EQCM response with transient current indicates that the final products in the two active dissolution regions are almost Ni(II) and that the Ni(ll) dissolution ratio to the total anodic charge in the transpassive dissolution region is smaller than that in the two active dissolution regions. On the basis of reaction parameters obtained experimentally, the active dissolution mechanism of nickel can be explained by the Bockris mechanism.

Effect of Halide Additions on Anodic Behavior of Nickel in Sulfuric Acid Solutions

Abstract A potentiokinetic study, dE/dt = 950 mV/hr, has been made of the effects of sodium chloride, bromide and iodide additions, in the range 0.001 to 0.1 M, on the anodic behavior of pure nickel in deaerated N/10 sulfuric acid. Each experiment comprised a forward and reverse sweep in the potential range (relative to the standard hydrogen electrode) −0.5 to +1.2 V. Halide additions affected the anodic behavior of the nickel in both active and passive regions. All halides studied lowered the corrosion potential, raised the primary passivation potential and increased the critical passivation current density. Additions of 0.01 M and greater resulted in elimination of the normal passive region. Reactivation was much greater on reverse sweeps with chloride additions than in either plain acid or with other halides. Negative slope marking the active-passive transition on forward sweep sometimes was eliminated but was evident always on the reverse sweep showing that even when attacks in active and passive regions merge there is a change of electrode process at the normal active passive transition.

Kinetics of the Anodic Dissolution of Nickel in Sulfuric Acid Solutions

A kinetic study was made on the anodic dissolution of nickel in sulfuric acid solutions ranging in pH from 0 to 3. Rapid polarization and steady‐state polarization techniques were used. The anodic polarization curve was found to change in appearance with time of polarization; the Tafel constant changed from its initial value of 0.5 to a steady‐state value of 2. Increasing the pH of the solution shifted the anodic polarization curve in the direction of less noble potential, and the dissolution rate at constant potential therefore increased with the increase of ion concentration. The pH dependence of the dissolution rate was estimated to be in the case of both rapid polarization and steady‐state polarization.Results analyzed in terms of electrochemical kinetics suggest the following consecutive steps for the anodic dissolution reaction: (a) ; (b) ; (c) . The rate‐determining step changes from step (a) to step (c) as ion concentration increases in the vicinity of the surface. The rate of anodic dissolution is controlled also by the amount of ion involved in a reaction cycle consisting of steps (a), (b),and (c).

Anodic Passivation of Nickel in Sulfuric Acid Solutions

The potential decay curve of a passive nickel electrode on open circuit was followed in solutions of pH ranging from 0.4 to 1.4. The three arrest potentials observed in the decay curve correspond to the equilibrium potentials for the , , and the electrodes, respectively; the second potential is called the Flade potential, and the passivation occurs beyond this potential. A process for formation of the film is proposed that can be represented by the successive reactions, , . Then the critical potential beyond which the oxide formation takes place is calculated, under conditions when the solution in the vicinity of the surface becomes saturated with corresponding to the solubility product of , and is found to be equal to the Flade potential. The proposed mechanism can also explain the ability of the passive film to protect the metal against active dissolution due to breakdown of the film.The mechanisms of dissolution of nickel in the passive and overpassive potential regions are discussed from measurements of the Tafel constant and the pH dependence of the dissolution rate .The results are summarized as follows: passive region; .
