Dry-Process Hardboards from Recycled Newsprint Paper Fibers

AbstractDry-process hardboard represents a favorable option for recycling old newspaper fibers. However, dry-process boards tend to be less dimensionally stable than boards processed by other methods. Our objective was to determine the effects of various wood fiber (WF) to old newspaper (ONP) ratios (100:0, 50:50, and 0:100 WF/ONP) on the mechanical strength and water resistance of dry-process hardboards made from these fibers. Untreated and acetylated hardboards were made with 3 or 7 percent resin and 0.5 percent wax. Boards were tested for static bending and tensile strength properties and water resistance. As expected, increasing the resin level from 3 to 7 percent generally improved all measured properties. Acetylation substantially improved the water resistance of all boards; increasing the amount of ONP caused a corresponding deterioration in both mechanical properties and water resistance.

A modified method of nitric acid pulping of bagasse

AbstractPulping of bagasse by a rapid and mild nitric acid process was successfully carried out to produce different grades of pulp. Nitric chemimechanical bagasse pulp was produced in a high yield of 91 % on pulping depithed bagasse with 4% HNO3 for a period of 30 min at 80°C, followed by alkali pulping with 2% NaOH at 95°C for 30 min. The pulp had a satisfactory strength and high opacity. On increasing the strengths of nitric acid to 7% and alkali to 7% a nitric semichemical pulp of 65% yield was obtained. The pulp had a superior strength and high opacity. The pulp was easily bleached to 71% general electric brightness (GE) with the chlorination‐alkali‐extraction‐hypochlorite (CEH) sequence. With 15% HNO3 and 8% NaOH, nitric chemical bagasse pulp was produced. The pulp was easily bleached to a high brightness of 82% GE with one stage hypochlorite. The pulp had a higher strength than kraft bagasse pulp. A satisfactory newsprint paper was produced on an experimental paper machine with a furnish composed of 80% bleached nitric semichemical bagasse pulp, 10% bleached softwood pulp and 10% clay.

Fuji mill is located at the central part of Fuji city which is closely situated from two biggest marketting cities of Tokyo and Osaka, has started its first paper machine operation in 1951.The mill has nine (9) Fourdrinier machines, one twinwire machine and three (3) coater machines, and produces around 70 grades of paper including LWC, glassine paper, post card paper, color wood free paper, newsprint paper, and telephone number paper.At present, it also produces Kraft pulp, Ground wood, Refiner Ground wood and De-inking pulp.Its capacity of monthly paper production is around 33, 000 tons. The area of Fuji mill is around 40, 000m2 and employees are around 1, 050.

The Beijing Detention House

The cold front had indeed arrived. It was frigid that night. I had on only a sweater and almost froze to death. They dispatched two policemen in overcoats to watch over me. The second day I declared that detention without proper legal procedures was like kidnapping, and I went on a hunger strike to protest. At noon, a man in his forties came. He was accompanied by a young woman in her twenties and the man with glasses who took notes the night before. He sat across from me and stared at me, and I curled up in the chair motionless. After a couple of minutes, with deliberation he asked my name. After a while, he said it had been decided that I was to be detained. I stirred a bit in the chair and asked, "The reason?" At this moment he suddenly jumped up and shouted, "Stand up! Listen to me as I announce the legal action against you! He took out a piece of paper and read it to me. I asked to see the paper, and found it to be a piece of newsprint paper, on which words were mimeographed in black ink. My name was filled in at the space after "decision to detain"; the reason for detention was violation of social order and control; the duration of detention was fifteen days. I handed back that piece of paper without saying a word. He seemed to be waiting for my reaction. I needed to search my brain for all the legal knowledge I had, to consider carefully, and to deduce. Thus I did not have any reaction. He motioned to the other two people who had come with him and said, "Take him away."

The Influence of Deacidification on the Deterioration of Paper

The influence of calcium carbonate deacidification on the rates of deterioration of commercial rag and newsprint papers at 90°C and 100% R.H. has been examined. Evidence is presented to show that the decreased rate of deterioration resulting from deacidification cannot be accounted for in terms of a decrease in the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis process alone. Atmospheric oxidation, shown to play an important role in the deterioration of the paper samples, is also retarded by deacidification.

Collaborative Study of Accelerated Development of Latent Fingerprint Images on Paper by Application of Steam

Nine latent fingerprint examiners participated in a collaborative study in the use of a steam iron to accelerate chemical development of latent images on bond and newsprint papers treated with a 0.5% solution of ninhydrin in acetone. Four latent images were placed on each paper by the Associate Referee during an 8 hr period. The papers were paired and numbered 1, 2, and 3. Three pairs were mailed to each collaborator who treated Pair 1 by dipping, Pair 2 by brushing or swabbing, and Pair 3 by spraying. After air-drying, the papers were subjected to heat and steam from a household steam iron until the images developed. The average time for developing all images was 5.8 min/paper. Of the total images available, 92.1% were developed to some degree; 47.9% of these images or 43.5% of all images were identified by the collaborators. The method has been adopted as offical first action.

N-chloroamide Derivatives of Polymers as Strength Agent for Paper

Some polymers bearing amide groups can be readily converted into the corresponding N-chloroderivatives by treatment with hypochlorite in alkaline medium. The N-chloroamide groups have a high reactivity to the groups having an active hydrogen atom, such as alcohols, phenols, and amines. On this account, various polymer-derivatives bearing N-chloroamide groups were examined as wet-and dry-strength agent for papers. Remarkable increases in dry-and wet-strengths were obtained in low-grade pulp papers, such as news print paper, and in unbleached pulp papers by wet-end addition of the N-chloroamide derivatives of polymers. However, these additives were not so effective for bleached pulp papers. This fact suggests that the N-chloroamide groups can readily react with the unbleached fibers (probably with lignin), forming the closs-linkages between the fibers, and that they, however, can not easily react with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose. The combined use of the N-chloroamide derivatives with a polyamine (aminoethyl cellulose) brought about significant increases in the dry-and wet-strengths of the bleached pulp papers as well as in those of the unbleached pulp papers. This effect may be attributed to the carbamide linkages formed by the reaction of the N-chloroamide groups with the amino groups of the polyamine.

On the Printing sharpness of News Print Paper and the Measuring Method for Smoothness of It

The study was done that by which of Bekk method and Chapman method, the testing methods for smoothness of paper, we could estimate more exactly the printing sharpness of news print paper. Results obtained were as follows. (1) Comparing the sample B which indicated low smoothness in Bekk method but high smoothness in Chapman method with the sample D which indicated high smoothness in Bekk method but low smoothness in Chapman method, it was recognized that the sample B was more exellent in the printing sharpness than the sample D. (2) The sample B had higher compressibility and lower density than the sample D, therefore it was supposed that the difference in the smoothness data between both methods was due to the difference in used pressure. (In Bekk method low pressure is used and in Chapman method high pressure is used.) However, even if we used as high pressure as Chapman method in Bekk method, we could not gain equivalent data to those in Chapman method. Consequantly, it seemed that the difference between data in both methods was not caused by the difference in force to press the specimen, but caused by the difference in the measuring principle of the used methods. (3) Through above mentioned, as to the testing method for smoothness in order to estimate the printing sharpness of news print paper, Chapman method was more suitable than Bekk method, at least on the printing conditions in authors' experiments.

STUDIES ON THE DIATOM EARTH

Some Hazardous Properties of Motion Picture Film<!--<xref ref-type="other" rid="fn1-10.5594_J08601">*</xref>-->

The hazards in handling or storing cellulose nitrate motion picture film are due to the unusually low temperature of ignition of the film, the extremely rapid rate of combustion, and the possibility of its decomposing (exothermic) even in a restricted supply of air (oxygen), with the evolution of explosive and poisonous gases. Data and information in respect to these hazardous properties of cellulose nitrate film are given. The importance of complying with the regulations of the National Board of Fire Underwriters can not be overestimated in obtaining adequate provision for handling and storing film safely. — Film having a cellulose acetate base was first submitted to the Laboratories about 20 years ago, and as the result of an extensive investigation, the acetate-base film in the form of ribbon for motion pictures was listed as slow-burning, the fire hazard being somewhat less than that of common newsprint paper in the same form and quantity. Data in respect to the hazardous properties of slow-burning cellulose acetate film are given, together with a brief description of tests conducted on slow-burning films at Underwriters' Laboratories.
