Data analytics application in cognitive system, planning and decision support

Helping leadership requires a thorough understanding of the many factors that impact the outcome of a decision. Choice As time has passed, emotional supporting networks have provided chiefs with pieces of information that have helped them make incremental advances, with varying degrees of success. The access of news providers was a significant limitation to the extent to which choice incredibly loving networks could accomplish their objectives. As a result, with the introduction of previously developed insightful techniques for massive information sources, new opportunities have surfaced that may possibly increase how managers dissect their worry and arrive at decisions employing data frameworks. Current dealings with both huge data and choice emotionally supporting networks were analysed in this study with the goal of distinguishing distinct components and factors pertinent to the issue and identifying prospective methods of increasing their combined usage. A final proposal is made in which the key components expected to ensure the performance and relevance of information being broken down by preference emotional level supportive networks are included, while also providing the benefits of experiences derived over moment from past decisions and favourable suggestions are also included.

Implementasi Deep Learning Menggunakan Metode CNN dan LSTM untuk Menentukan Berita Palsu dalam Bahasa Indonesia

This research aims to implement deep learning techniques to determine fact and fake news in Indonesian language. The methods used are Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM). The stages of the research consisted of collecting data, labeling data, preprocessing data, word embedding, splitting data, forming CNN and LSTM models, evaluating, testing new input data and comparing evaluations of the established CNN and LSTM models. The Data are collected from a fact and fake news provider site that is valid, namely TurnbackHoax.id. There are 1786 news used in this study, with 802 fact and 984 fake news. The results indicate that the CNN and LSTM methods were successfully applied to determine fact and fake news in Indonesian language properly. CNN has an accuracy test, precision and recall value of 0.88, while the LSTM model has an accuracy test and precision value of 0.84 and a recall of 0.83. In testing the new data input, all of the predictions obtained by CNN are correct, while the prediction results obtained by LSTM have 1 wrong prediction. Based on the evaluation results and the results of testing the new data input, the model produced by the CNN method is better than the model produced by the LSTM method.

Media negativity bias and tax compliance: experimental evidence

We study the impact of the media negativity bias on tax compliance. Through a framed laboratory experiment, we assess how the exposure to biased news about government action affects compliance in a repeated taxation game. Subjects treated with positive news are significantly more compliant than the control group. Instead, the exposure to negative news does not prompt any significant reaction compared to the neutral condition, suggesting that participants may perceive the media negativity bias in the selection and tonality of news as the norm rather than the exception. Overall, our results suggest that biased news provision is a constant source of psychological priming and plays a vital role in taxpayers’ compliance decisions.

Evaluasi Sistem Informasi Media Online Menggunakan Metode Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)

Abstract — Lensapena.id is a news provider website that has been established since 2019. However, many people do not know Lensapena.id and the public's lack of intention in using the Lensapena.id. Therefore, to find out the acceptance of Lensapena.id, it is necessary to evaluate the acceptance. The evaluation method used in this study is Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with 5 variables, namely Perceived Ease Of Use, Perceived Usefulness, Attitude To the Act, Behavioral Intention and Actual System Usage. Data collection was done by questionnaires, observations and interviews. The sample assumption used in this study is 100 general public. The results showed that the level of acceptance of the Lensapena was worthy of Neutral which had a value of 4.4 and there were 4 accepted relationships, namely Attitude Toward The Act on Behavioral Intention, Behavioral Intention on Actual System Usage, Perceived Ease Of Use on Attitude Toward The Act, Perceived Ease Of Use on Perceived Usefulness and 2 rejected relationships, namely Perceived Usefulness on Attitude Toward The Act and Perceived Usefulness on Behavioral Intention. Based on the research conducted, several recommendations are given to increase acceptance on the Lensapena.id.

Is Social Media Killing Local News? An Examination of Engagement and Ownership Patterns in U.S. Community News on Facebook

This article focuses on two forces linked to declines in coverage of genuinely local civic affairs: (a) the impact of increasing corporate consolidation in ownership among news providers, and (b) the degree to which the economic incentives and logics of digital platforms may also drive editorial decision-making at news organizations away from coverage of local news. Using a unique dataset of 2.4 million Facebook posts published by local news organizations in three U.S. states between 2018 and 2019, we find evidence that both factors matter. Long-running trends towards conglomeration in the industry have a demonstrable impact on how much and what kinds of local news gets posted on the site, but we also find that the platform itself may incentivize certain types of coverage over others. Specifically, we find organizations owned by chains are more likely to post duplicative, repurposed content that receive fewer interactions per post—evidence of quantity being valued over quality—as well as higher rates of engagement with national, hard news stories over unique content about local affairs. Findings shed light on how Facebook—combined with media ownership structures—may hinder the task of serving local communities with original news that satisfies important civic needs.

Why children’s news matters: The case of CBBC Newsround in the UK

Abstract There has never been a greater need for reliable, truthful news to help citizens navigate and assess the veracity of what they are reading and viewing, especially on social media. Widespread concerns around ‘fake’ news demonstrate an enduring requirement for curated and trustworthy children’s news that addresses children as young citizens with certain rights. Drawing on recent UK events, we discuss the case for children’s news provision by public service broadcasting (PSB) from a communication rights perspective by analyzing the BBC’s 2019 plans to reduce the broadcast presence and originated hours of its flagship news service, Newsround, in favor of online distribution.

A digital platform for ethical advertising and hybrid business models for news organizations: are they greening methods for ‘news deserts’?

This article suggests that the adoption of hybrid business models coupled with the establishment of an ethical advertising platform could help counter the emergence of news deserts. The latter are geographic areas and policy issues lacking coverage because of the crisis of the commercial model of news provision. Three clusters of characteristics are used to streamline and compare business models: (1) revenue models, (2) patrons and their motives, and (3) legal frameworks for the incorporation of the organization. Hybrid business models are designed by mixing the principles underpinning the Benefit Corporation or the Low-profit Limited Liability Company (L3C), with the basic characteristics of commercial and non-profit news organizations. The term ethical advertising refers to promotional activities that non-profits and other organizations dedicated to social goals normally undertake, including marketing, fundraising, or public-awareness campaigns. Based on data published by the Internal Revenue Services, this article argues that a digital platform for ethical advertising could face a demand worth over $1 billion a year. Additionally, this platform could effectively match non-profits’ demand for an audience with a pro-social attitude with non-profit and hybrid news organizations’ need for additional revenue streams.

They promised this ten years ago. Effects of diabetes news characteristics on patients' perceptions and attitudes towards medical innovations and therapy adherence.

Patients have ever-increasing access to web-based news about hopeful scientific developments that may or may not cure them in the future. Science communication experts agree that the quality of news provision is not always guaranteed. However, literature does not clarify in what way users are actually affected by typical news characteristics such as the news object (described developmental phase of an innovation), the news source (degree of authority), and the news style (degree of language intensification). An online vignette experiment (N = 259) investigated causal relationships between characteristics of news about diabetes innovations and patients’ perceptions of future success, their interest in the innovation, and attitudes regarding current therapy adherence. Findings show that descriptions of success in mice led to higher estimations of future success chances than earlier and later developmental phases. Furthermore, news from a nonauthoritative source led to an increased interest in the innovation, and a more negative attitude towards current lifestyle advice. Lastly, the intensification of the language used in news messages showed slight adverse effects on the readers’ attitude. These findings, combined with their small effect sizes, support the optimistic view that diabetes patients are generally critical assessors of health news and that future research on this topic should focus on affected fragile subgroups.

Web and Social Media Image Forensics for News Professionals

User-generated content -commonly referred to as "eyewitness media"- has become an essential component in journalism and news reporting. Increasingly more news providers, such as news agencies, broadcasters and Web-only players have set up teams of dedicated investigators or are in the process of training parts of their journalistic workforce to gather and evaluate material from social networks and the Web. If verified, such content can be invaluable in delivering a news story. However, while source checking and verification is as old as journalism itself, the verification of digital material is a relatively young field, with protocols and assisting tools still being developed. In this work, we present our efforts towards a Web-based image verification platform. The platform, currently in its alpha stage, features image tampering detection using a number of state-of-the-art algorithms and image metadata visualization. We discuss the current strengths and limitations of the platform and the implemented state-of-the-art with respect to the specific requirements of the task, resulting from its Web-based nature and its intended use by news investigators with limited expertise in the domain of image forensics.

Cyclicity of real estate-related trends: topic modelling and sentiment analysis on German real estate news

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify and analyse the news coverage and sentiment of real estate-related trends in Germany. Trends are considered as being stable and long-term. If the news coverage and sentiment of trends underlie cyclicity, this could impact investors’ behaviour. For instance, in the case of increased reporting on sustainability issues, investors may be inclined to invest more in sustainable buildings, assuming that this is of growing importance to their clients. Hence, investors could expect higher returns when a trend topic goes viral.Design/methodology/approachWith the help of topic modelling, incorporating seed words partially generated via word embeddings, almost 170,000 newspaper articles published between 1999 and 2019 by a major German real estate news provider are analysed and assigned to real estate-related trends. Through applying a dictionary-based approach, this dataset is then analysed based on whether the tone of the news coverage of a specific trend is subject to change.FindingsThe articles concerning urbanisation and globalisation account for the largest shares of reporting. However, the shares are subject to change over time, both in terms of news coverage and sentiment. In particular, the topic of sustainability illustrates a clearly increasing trend with cyclical movements throughout the examined period. Overall, the digitalisation trend has a highly positive connotation within the analysed articles, while regulation displays the most negative sentiment.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first application to explore German real estate newspaper articles regarding the methodologies of word representation and seeded topic modelling. The integration of topic modelling into real estate analysis provides a means through which to extract information in a standardised and replicable way. The methodology can be applied to several further fields like analysing market reports, company statements or social media comments on real estate topics. Finally, this is also the first study to measure the cyclicity of real estate-related trends by means of textual analysis.

Let’s not put a label on it: right-wing terrorism in the news

ABSTRACT Media portrayals of terrorism, particularly right-wing terrorism, have been understudied. In response, this study focuses on understanding how right-wing terrorism is portrayed by the New York Times and the Washington Post. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on five cases. Framing theory and thematic analysis were used to inform the research methods. Four main themes emerge: “officially, we cannot be sure this was terrorism”; “just a man – the obfuscation of motive”; “on normalisation and humanisation”; and “eventually we have to talk about gun policy.” The results show that the news providers did not label these cases as terrorism, and that the ideology of the attackers was minimised as a motive. By searching so extensively for “other reasons” for the violence, the threat of right-wing violence was minimised. As a result of these incomplete or misleading portrayals, the threat from these individuals goes unchecked.

An integrated framework for online news quality assurance

This paper introduced a synthesized theoretical framework of online news quality assurance. The framework includes conceptual models of quality evaluation, value assessment, and intervention. The framework also provides typologies of user activities, information agents, and the relationships among them. The framework is grounded in prior frameworks of information quality and the analysis of two cases of large-scale online news aggregators: Google News and Facebook News. The framework can be used as a knowledge source to guide the design and evaluation of quality assurance processes of online news providers and aggregator ecosystems.

Re-focusing on the local: News start-ups, community engagement and social capital

The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 had an immediate and far-reaching impact on newspaper publishing in regional Australia. Scores of publications around the country ceased printing temporarily or permanently, creating ‘news deserts’ in some towns and regions, and significantly reducing access to local news in others. In response to this, local news start-ups began emerging in towns and regions across the country. Business models, publication frequency and other characteristics vary widely, but one characteristic that is widely shared is an emphasis on community engagement and local interests. This extends beyond the provision of local news to narratives highlighting multi-layered engagement with and support for communities. By engaging with communities as more than providers of news, these outlets may also be positioning themselves to support local social capital. This article explores key themes and ideas in the community-focused narratives of a purposive sample of start-up local news outlets to consider how their strategies of community connection and interaction may also contribute to social capital.

Twelve tips to manage a breaking bad news process: Using S-P-w-ICE-S – A revised version of the SPIKES protocol

Breaking bad news (BBN) is a difficult task that requires multiple professional competencies. The way it is managed has implications for all involved in the encounter: the patient, family members, and the news provider. Existing guidelines were developed mainly at the turn of the millennium and require updating based on identification of daily clinical needs and pedagogical challenges while teaching the current protocols. Furthermore, there is a need to provide an overview of BBN encounters as a process, rather than a subdivided event, to help practitioners adopt an approach that might serve them in their daily routines. This twelve tips article summarizes research and practical experience for handling BBN encounters, from their preparation, through delivering the news while attending patients and family members' needs, toward documenting the news, and critically reflecting on the interaction. The tips are structured and explained to serve both practitioners and medical educators.

Partisan Responses to Fact-Checking in Online News Platforms: Evidence from a Political Rumor about the North Korean Leader

To correct misinformation and mitigate the social costs of political rumors and fake news, news providers, politicians, and researchers have exerted significant efforts on fact-checking and rumor debunking. This study examined how individuals will respond when a political rumor is debunked by large-scale fact-checking. To explore this question, we leveraged a quasi-experimental setting where the North Korean leader’s reappearance in the public event suddenly rebutted a political rumor about his death. Collecting 2.6 million comments from the largest online news portal in South Korea, we employed a difference-in-differences approach comparing differences in commenting behaviors between liberals and conservatives before and after this event. The results show that a political side empowered by the fact-checking coverage became more vocal and hostile. However, their explicit support level for the rumor did not change significantly compared to their partisan counterparts. Besides, we found that news outlets rebutted by fact-checking attracted more user comments than supported news outlets. Swearing comments of the supported political side mostly drove this difference, suggesting that partisans tend to utilize favorable fact-checking to empower their political side through blaming the other side. Our research stresses the importance of capturing the silence of partisans in considering the effectiveness of fact-checking and provides an alternative explanation on why fact-checking evokes hostile communication in online media.

Who is responsible for interventions against problematic comments? Comparing user attitudes in Germany and the United States

AbstractOnline comment sections on news organizations' social media pages provide a unique forum for exploring attitudes toward platform governance and freedom of expression at the crossroads between people, platforms, and news providers. Amid ample political and policy interest, little empirical evidence exists on user perceptions of platform governance. Through survey studies in Germany (n = 1155) and the United States (n = 1164), we provide a comparative perspective on responsibility attributions toward different regulatory actors who may intervene against problematic user comments: the state (law enforcement), platform operators (Facebook), news organizations, and users themselves. We explore this against the backdrop of different notions of free speech and cultural differences in the two countries. We find that Germans attribute greater responsibility for intervention to the state, Facebook, and news organizations than Americans. They also assume greater self‐responsibility. While support for free speech did not impact responsibility attribution to Facebook, news organizations, or the users themselves, people with greater general support for free speech saw law enforcement as less responsible for intervention. The results provide empirical evidence for an integrated view of various regulatory actors who complement each other in the governance of online discussions.

The political information environment in Denmark 2.0

The article analyzes and discusses recent developments in the political information environment in Denmark, understood as the supply of and demand for political news and political information in a given society. The article focuses on the supply of and demand for (political) news by traditional news media and alternative news media, as offered offline, online and on social media. The article shows that leading traditional news media are still the cornerstone of Danish news consumption, but also that users with lower levels of education and income from outside the Copenhagen area access traditional news outlets less frequently than the rest of the population. For social media, the analysis shows that Facebook remains the dominant social media platform in Denmark. At the same time, only 13 percent of Danish citizens consider “social media” as their most important source of news. Finally, the analysis of the Danish alternative media landscape shows that the monopoly position of traditional news media as a provider of news and views to a wide audience is increasingly challenged by a very heterogeneous group of new online media that includes hyperpartisan media, slow news media and debate-oriented media. The article concludes by discussing how the changes in the political information landscape can affect the democratic dialogue in Denmark.

“Cross-editing”: Comparing News Output Through Journalists’ Re-working of Their Rivals’ Scripts

ABSTRACT Newsdesk journalists make thousands of editorial decisions every day without recourse to style guides. They can do this because they have internalised the aims and values of their news organisations: they know what counts as a “good story” for their output. This paper describes a pioneering micro-level comparative method of studying journalistic values in which, unlike in other comparative studies, the journalists themselves perform the initial analysis. In essence, newsdesk editors from two news organisations swap scripts. They evaluate, edit and mark up their rivals’ texts as if they were being asked to use them in their own output. What would they alter, insert or leave out? Would they reject a story completely? This “cross-edit” and the editors’ additional observations represent unmediated analysis from inside the news editing process, allowing researchers to draw comparative conclusions grounded principally in discourse analysis. To pilot the method, a number of journalists from the BBC and China’s official English-language news provider, CCTV-News (now CGTN), cross-edited selected news scripts published by their rivals. The technique shed new light on news routines, lexical choices, omissions and unexpected consonances in news values. It was then refined to provide a framework for future, wider use.

An Overview of Commercially Available Apps in the Initial Months of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Introduction: It has been 4 months since the discovery of COVID-19, and there have been many measures introduced to curb movements of individuals to stem the spread. There has been an increase in the utilization of web-based technologies for counseling, and for supervision and training, and this has been carefully described in China. Several telehealth initiatives have been highlighted for Australian residents. Smartphone applications have previously been shown to be helpful in times of a crisis. Whilst there have been some examples of how web-based technologies have been used to support individuals who are concerned about or living with COVID-19, we know of no studies or review that have specifically looked at how M-Health technologies have been utilized for COVID-19.Objectives: There might be existing commercially available applications on the commercial stores, or in the published literature. There remains a lack of understanding of the resources that are available, the functionality of these applications, and the evidence base of these applications. Given this, the objective of this content analytical review is in identifying the commercial applications that are available currently for COVID-19, and in exploring their functionalities.Methods: A mobile application search application was used. The search terminologies used were “COVID” and “COVID-19.” Keyword search was performed based on the titles of the commercial applications. The search through the database was conducted from the 27th March through to the 18th of April 2020 by two independent authors.Results: A total of 103 applications were identified from the Apple iTunes and Google Play store, respectively; 32 were available on both Apple and Google Play stores. The majority appeared on the commercial stores between March and April 2020, more than 2 months after the first discovery of COVID-19. Some of the common functionalities include the provision of news and information, contact tracking, and self-assessment or diagnosis.Conclusions: This is the first review that has characterized the smartphone applications 4 months after the first discovery of COVID-19.

Social Bubbles, Fake News, and Profits: Can Real News Survive?

We develop a game-theoretic model of strategic interaction between news providers and news consumers. News providers are profit maximizers while consumers maximize utility. News providers can provide true or fake news. Providing real news is costlier than providing fake news. Consumers can be biased, i.e., live in a social bubble, or unbiased. Real News that does not fit their world view is costly for biased consumers, while fake news imposes a negative externality on unbiased consumers because they have to spend time fact-checking. Heterogeneity in costs for both news purveyors and consumers drives Nash equilibria in static and dynamic game formulations. We conclude that market based rational choice systems can help understand the spread of fake news and biased people. Consequently, it is not enough to say that greedy profit-maximizing media companies drive fake news. Consumers drive the choices made by media companies, while media companies drive the consumer choice to be biased. Fetters on a free press may exacerbate the increase of biased consumers. Last, there may be a trade-off between two equally important democratic goals: the right information to make good decisions and freedom of thought.
