News as a Means of Popularization of First Aid Knowledge: Content Analysis of News Articles Related to Cases of Pediatric Cardiac Arrest in Schools and Kindergartens of Russia

RELEVANCE In Russia, insufficient motivation and low readiness of laypeople to provide first aid (FA) stipulate low rates of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and, as consequence, high mortality from cardiac arrest (CA). News reports on real cases of CA, in addition to describing circumstances of the event, may carry important information promoting FA provision among a wide audience. However, existing practice of presenting such content in Russian media sphere is unknown.AIM To investigate contemporary trends for presentation of information on the problem of CA and provision of help in CA in reports of online news media on the example of a news sample about cases of pediatric CA in kindergartens and schools of Russia.MATERIAL AND METHODS In August 2021, Google and Yandex were searched for Russian-language news reports describing cases of CA that happened in children in Russian schools and kindergartens in 2020, and structured content analysis of the news was carried out.RESULTS The study sample consisted of 207 news reports describing 21 unique case of CA. In 76.2% cases (n=16) CA occurred in children at school, in 23.8% cases (5) — at kindergarten. At least in 28.6% of cases (6) Emergency Medical Services providers did not attempt CPR at arrival on scene. FA provision by bystanders was described in two cases (9.5%), provision of help by medical employees of educational organizations — in six cases (28.6%). Only in one case (4.8%) the child was transferred to a hospital after successful resuscitation. In the rest of cases (n=20; 95.2%) biological death was verified on scene. Information on the value of FA for saving life in CA was present in one out of 207 news reports (0.5%); and there were no reports mentioning legal aspects of FA provision, describing procedure of FA in CA, or highlighting the importance of mass public resuscitation education.CONCLUSIONS News reports that describe cases of CA confirm high relevance of the problem, but do not carry important information related to popularization of FA knowledge. Inclusion of information on significance, principles and procedures of providing FA to CA victims into the content of the news reports is necessary for establishing positive public opinion and increasing motivation of the general population of Russia towards training in FA and FA provision. This in turn indicates the necessity for enhancing awareness of the professional journalistic community on the problem of FA provision in CA.

Sourcing practices of online news media in Switzerland during the war in Ukraine

IntroductionIn times of war, sourcing becomes a major challenge for journalists. Information is often unavailable because access is restricted or because reporting on the ground is prohibited, too dangerous, or even simply too costly for media having to work with limited resources. Which sources actually shape the news is a highly relevant question because news media still constitute the main channel of information for many citizens, especially when it comes to wars abroad. For a long time, scholars have diagnosed a dominance of official sources in war coverage but have not analyzed whether this is still the case with the advent of social media platforms, which potentially offer journalists other sources. Moreover, the integration of social media sources, such as Twitter or Telegram, is just one of many interdependencies in hybrid media environments. We aim to provide a more holistic understanding of sourcing practices in times of war by analyzing to what extent information from government and military sources, social media, other news media, and news agencies is featured as a main source in reporting on the war in Ukraine.MethodsIn our paper, we examine how 13 online media in Switzerland cover the war in Ukraine during the first 3 months after Russia's invasion—an example of a period in which journalists must typically identify reliable sources for reporting on the events surrounding such a war. Using a manual content analysis of 1,198 news articles, we analyze the sourcing practices that are visible in the reporting.ResultsOur results clearly show that information from other news outlets and social media and, above all, from news agencies plays an important role. Structural features of media types lead to distinct sourcing practices. Heavily commercialized, advertising-based media rely on news agency reports, other news media, and social media much more than subscription media or public service media. However, in all media types, actors from the government and the military are the most important source type.DiscussionOur study reveals patterns old and new in terms of sourcing practices war coverage in a European country not participating in, but affected by, the major war in Ukraine.

News Framing Analysis Of Rejection Issue Of The Film “Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku” On Republika.co.id

The purpose of this research was to explain the framing of the rejection issue of the film “Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku†on the online news media Republika.co.id. The type of this research is a qualitative research, descriptive approach using a framing analysis method. Based on the research results, it was found that Republika.co.id was more likely to reject the film “Kucumbu Tubuh Indahkuâ€. Among nine news analysed, it was found that seven news framed by Republika.co.id, tended to reject the film and present the news regarding the film from the negative side. On this side, Republika.co.id constructed the news by presenting the reason for the rejection of the film because it was considered to contain LGBT sexual deviation content. Although Republika.co.id tended to frame the news which seemed to reject the film, it also seemed to show the positive side of the film as found in two news which highlighted the response of the producers and directors to the film.

The Role of National Media Reporting in Supporting Defense Diplomacy Activities to Improve National Defense

One of the problems of the Republic of Indonesia's National Defense is that the minimum defense force has not been fulfilled, so policy and budgetary support are needed to increase this force, including defense equipment. This support is required from the legislature (DPR-RI), the executive (especially Bappenas and the Ministry of Finance), as well as positive public aspirations, one of the indicators of which is the direction of national mass media coverage. Regarding this effort, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto carried out defense diplomacy activities by making a series of visits abroad, which raised pros and cons at home. Pointed starting from this background, this research aims to analyze how national online news media reports framing news regarding a series of visits to Indonesian defense diplomacy activities conducted by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto for the October 2019-November 2021 period; and what is the impact of online news media coverage in helping support from stakeholders in supporting defense diplomacy activities to improve national defense. This research approach is qualitative. Research period October 2019-November 2021. Primary data collection techniques are through in-depth interviews with eight sources and analyzing the framing of 15 news related to 15 news in three online news media (Kompas.com. Detik.com, and Tribunnews.com). Secondary data collection techniques through library research. The results of the study show that the framing of national online news media is positive, which can be interpreted as playing a role in supporting the defense diplomacy activities carried out by Defense Minister Prabowo in the form of a series of overseas visits for the period October 2019November 2021; and positive framing by the national online news media as the aspirations of the community (public) has had a positive impact on the attitude of stakeholders (DPR-RI, Bappenas, Ministry of Finance) by responding positively to the Ministry of Defense's policies to meet the needs of the TNI's leading weaponry equipment to improve national defense

Issues of the 2024 Presidential Candidates in Online News Texts: Critical Discourse Analysis of the Teun A Van Dijk Model

The discourse on the 2024 presidential candidate issue is a discourse formed by the practice of power which implies certain goals. Therefore, media discourse that reports on the 2024 presidential candidate issue is an issue or problem that contains critical languages or expressions. This research is important to find out the purpose or intention of the presidential candidate issue which reports on popular figures who have a major influence on social change and the progress of the country in the future. The purpose of this study is to analyze news texts about presidential candidates using the text dimensions of the Teun A. van Dijk model in the form of macro structure, super structure, and micro structure which are modified with the Jufri model. The type of method used is qualitative with a qualitative descriptive design that describes aspects of the text dimensions of the discourse structure, the data used is written text on the online news media CNN Indonesia, Jawapos.com, and Kompas.com. The results of this study are to describe the description and interpretation of the aspects of text dimensions in the form of macro structure, super structure, and micro structure which are then explained in the form of actions or actions that have a specific purpose. This research is useful for making a theoretical contribution and providing a conceptual overview that can inspire researchers or students who focus on the study of critical discourse analysis and can be implemented in critical discourse courses.

How online collaboration software shapes control at work? Evidence from news organizations

PurposeOnline collaboration software (OCS), such as Slack and Microsoft Teams, has become widespread among news organizations as these tools help news workers collaborate across different locations and make communication more efficient inside newsrooms. While such technologies are increasingly employed as teamwork productivity boosters, the authors’ knowledge of their potential role in shaping control mechanisms and power dynamics within news work is limited. This paper addresses how different types of control may emerge within virtual newsrooms being operated by OCS. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue.Design/methodology/approachThe paper employs an interview-based qualitative method and provides evidence gathered from 20 interviews with digital journalists and media managers representing 11 online news media in Switzerland.FindingsThe findings reveal how OCS could lead to various control mechanisms in the workplace by directing, evaluating and disciplining journalists in specific ways. This study suggests that while OCS can be valuable in boosting collaborations among news staff, it might create a situation where journalists are less able to focus on their work and creative activities. Most importantly, OCS bolsters an “always-on” work culture in news media and removes obstacles for employers and managers to invade journalists' space, time and mind.Originality/valueBy focusing on three aspects of control mechanisms, including direction, evaluation and discipline, this paper contributes to a better understanding of the role of OCS in shaping control and power dynamics within news media organizations.

Feminists are warriors: Framing effects of war metaphors

Metaphors influence general attitudes towards political and social ideas (Otieno et al. 2016). In particular, war metaphors are very common in political discourse. Their framing effects, however, depend on the context in which war metaphors are used, rendering positive or negative outcomes (Flusberg et al. 2018; Thibodeau 2018). Reali (2021) explored metaphorical framing of feminism and women in feminism-related news in online media in Spanish, finding that war metaphors depicting women as warriors fighting for their rights were the most prevalent ones. Here, we use an experimental paradigm to explore whether the use of war metaphors affects the perception of issues defended by the feminist movements. Spanish-speaking participants were exposed to a vignette describing a hypothetical case of elective abortion. Two variables were manipulated in a 2X2 between-subjects design: 1.the use of warfare framing (war metaphors/neutral frames), and 2.the use of inclusive language in Spanish (gender inclusive/gender neutral language). Additionally, participants’ sociodemographic data were collected. A series of regression analyses showed an effect of metaphorical framing on the perception of the right to decide, perception of the partner’s right to opine, and the perception of the main character’s coldness when controlling for sociodemographic variables. The use of inclusive language had little effect on perception. Consistent with previous findings, sociodemographic factors strongly affected perception: men, and conservative and religious participants rated the right to decide lower, and character’s coldness as higher.

This study aims to find out the ideological differences between the local Papuan online news media (Jubi.co.id) and the Indonesian national online news media (Kompas.com) with the highest reader traffic related to the news on the Kiwirok violence on September 13th, 2021, involving the TPNPB OPM and the Indonesian military. Media ideology is revealed by looking at the use of adjectives in news texts. This research uses the Fairclough model of Critical Discourse Analysis framework with Halliday's Systemic Functional Lingustics approach. The method of data collection was done by using purposive sampling documentation technique. The data is collected in a corpus to be processed with the Antconc. Adjective words are collected to be understood in the context of their use. The results showed that the media Jubi.co.id reports events by giving a bad image to the two parties: the party who carried out the attack and the state/ apparatus. Kompas.com reports the news by giving a bad image to the party who carried out the attack and a good image to the state/ apparatus.

Paying for Online News as Political Consumption in Hong Kong

This article examines the relationship between political partisanship and willingness to pay for online news. Given the prominence of partisan media in the high-choice digital media environment, paying for online news can take on the characteristics of political consumption – that is, acts of consumption driven by political and moral values – and be linked to partisanship and partisan media trust. Depending on the political context, supporters of one side of a political divide may be particularly likely to develop a general concern with the news media’s financial situation and a willingness to support online news media financially. Empirically, an analysis of survey data from Hong Kong shows that in the aftermath of the vast pro-democracy movement in 2019–2020, political partisanship and partisan media trust were related to willingness to pay for online news positively and both directly and indirectly through concern with the media’s financial situation. The general implications of these findings are discussed.

Online platforms' framing around vaping.

In this paper, we provide a descriptive overview of how vaping is framed differently between various online platforms (Wikipedia, Quora, Medium, Reddit, Stack Exchange, wikiHow, Facebook, and online news media). We provide an overview of >1 million posts and news articles about vaping to study the differences in framing between online platforms. Findings indicate an inconsistent framing around vaping across platforms. Stakeholders may utilize our findings to intervene around the framing of vaping and may design communications campaigns that improve the way society sees vaping, possibly aiding smoking cessation and reducing youth vaping.

Analisis Framing Pemberitaan Media Online Detik.Com dan Kompas.tv atas Kasus Kekerasan Seksual di Institusi KemenKop UKM RI

The easy access to online news media is accompanied by the low ability of the public to understand the contents of news texts, making the public unable to grasp the true intent of a news story. News does not only provide information but also has the power to shape people's views on something. Therefore, this study aims to describe how news framing works in processing news. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The results of the study show that there are differences in framing by Detik.com and Kompas.tv media regarding cases of sexual harassment that occurred in one of the offices of state institutions, namely the Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia (KemenKop UKM RI) in 2019 which returned go on. In the syntactical aspect of the Detik.com media, the statement made was a form of self-defense by the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises. It can be seen that the writing of the lead is a form of defense or clarification if the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises does not provide protection to the perpetrators and does not ignore victims of sexual harassment. Whereas on Kompas.tv the statement from the victim takes precedence. It can be seen in the leads written by Kompas.tv as a news media writing news of sexual harassment in order to tell the public the actual chronology of events from the victim's point of view and the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises. The thematic elements in Detik.com media are the use of explanatory coherence in the form of the word 'and' and the use of the pronouns he, we, and us. Whereas on Kompas.tv many explanatory coherences were found in the form of the word 'and' and the use of pronouns in the form of the words 'they' and 'us'. Associations between emotions expressed in internet news and subsequent emotional content on twitter

We report on the first investigation of large-scale temporal associations between emotions expressed in online news media and those expressed on social media (Twitter). This issue has received little attention in previous research, although the study of emotions expressed on social media has bloomed owing to its importance in the study of mental health at the population level. Relying on automatically emotion-coded data from almost 1 million online news articles on disease and the coronavirus and more than 6 million tweets, we examined such associations. We found that prior changes in generic emotional categories (positive and negative emotions) in the news on the topic of disease were associated with lagged changes in these categories in tweets. Discrete negative emotions did not robustly feature this pattern. Emotional categories coded in online news stories on the coronavirus generally featured weaker and more disparate lagged associations with emotional categories coded in subsequent tweets.

SOCIAL MEDIA, MUSLIM COMMUNITY, AND THE PANDEMIC: Context-Oriented Approaches to Misinformation and Disinformation in Indonesia and Malaysia

This study focuses on misinformation and disinformation (MDI) in social media in Indonesia and Malaysia during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study argues that empirical inquiries into such general categories of contexts reveal the specificity of each of them in situ , e.g. complex landscapes of emotions in Indonesia and Malaysia as described by Heider, or the normative news clusters observed by Goal et al. in Indonesian and Malaysian online news media. The conclusion is that both content- and context-oriented strategies to counter MDI should consider the fragmen­tation of audiences in Indonesia and Malaysia and their heterogeneous emotional and normative landscapes. A hybrid, combined approach including both social media content and social networks outside of social media, but relevant for the emotional and normative context of social media users, e.g. trusted religious communities, seems to be a promising strategy to counter MDI.

Ethnic Conflicts or Economic Benefits? A Media Content Analysis About the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway as a Part of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor

Introduction. The study analyses the reflection of the infrastructure projects on the Trans-Caspian transport corridor in the media. By combining the roles of transport corridor as a means of regional cooperation and overcoming ethnic issues between the countries, it is aimed at addressing two main questions. The first question would be on the reflection of infrastructure projects on the Trans-Caspian transport corridor in the media in the context of promoting regional cooperation, the second on whether news about infrastructure projects contains any ethnic based messages of discrimination or hostility to exclude any country from such projects. The BTK railway project is used as a case in this paper in this respect. Methods and materials. A conceptual content analysis methodology is applied in this study, which is limited to online media news of three major news agencies of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey within a specific time period beginning from the official inauguration of the BTK until the date of conducting this research – 30 October 2017 – 15 May 2020. Analysis and results. The findings reveal that the news investigated within the context of this research involves positive messages supporting regional cooperation, mutual benefits and common interests that may have an incentive impact on public perceptions. It was also discovered that the news about the BTK railway project does not contain any content otherizing or excludes any country, which may help societies to focus on regional cooperation rather than vulnerable ethnic issues. Considering the difficulty of control of social media, it has been recommended that official news may avoid publishing messages with provocative content. Authors’ contribution. A.N. Misinformation in the media: global coverage of GMOs 2019-2021

ABSTRACT Misinformation is a serious problem in scientific debates ranging from climate change to vaccines to nuclear power. In this study we quantitatively assess the phenomenon of misinformation – defined as information which is at variance with widely-accepted scientific consensus – on genetically modified crops and food (“GMOs”) in the mainstream and online news media over a two-year period. We found an overall falsehood rate of 9% with a potential readership of 256 million. None of the misinformation was positive in sentiment; most was negative. About a fifth of Africa’s media coverage on GMOs contained misinformation, a worrying finding given the potential for genetic engineering to deliver improved nutrition and food security in the continent. We conclude that misinformation about GMOs in the mainstream media is still a significant problem, and outranks the proportion of misinformation in other comparable debates such as COVID-19 and vaccines.

The Persuasive speech in business advertorial discourse

The study outlined in this article aimed to describe the language used in the advertisements discourse in the online daily news. This study analyzed the persuasive language used in the business advertorial which includes the choice of language forms and persuasion techniques in advertorial discourses that have persuasive power. The study was designed using a qualitative approach. The data source was the business advertorials text contained in online news media. Data of the study is in the form of words and sentences that are considered to have persuasive power in influencing the targeted audience. By applying content analysis, this study produced findings on language characteristics and persuasive techniques found in business advertorial discourses. The persuasive language forms in the advertorial discourses were represented in the choice of words and expressions. The persuasive words illustrated profits, self-image, heart responses. The style of words was hyperbolic, metaphorical, and language prestige. The expressions in the advertorial discourses have the meaning of suggestions for prospective customers, demeaning other products, emphasizing self-confidence, emphasizing product competition, giving evidence of product trust, and expressions to invite action. The words and expressions were chosen according to the context and product advertised to emphasize the emotional meaning of the ad reader. The persuasion techniques were used to achieve a number of changes, such as changing the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of the readers.

Young Generation Media Literacy on Utilization of Detik.com Online News Media

Current communication technology supports the flow of information exchange. For those who can take advantage of communication technology, are also those who can play the role of producers, consumers, distributors to information manipulators. The fast flow of information delivery is feared by readers who are unable to distinguish between factual news and hoaxes. This can be anticipated by being equipped with media literacy skills. Currently, the younger generation (millennials and Generation Z) are those who are predominantly consumers of digital information. They are the ones who take advantage of the use of internet-based communication technology, especially in obtaining information. However, the problem is that Indonesia's literacy level is fairly low. Detikcom asa pioneer of online news media in Indonesiahas contributed to delivering news for news readers. However, there are still many who have not maximized the use of detikcom as a reference source for reading, especially for the younger generation. The purpose of this study is to determine the media literacy carried out by young towards the use of the detik.com application or site. This study uses qualitative research methods with a case study approach and detikcom as the object of research. The results of this study concluded that readers from the younger generation have adopted a media literacy attitude as a provision to face the fast flow of information. The media literacy they do on detik.com as a news source has met the stages of access, understanding, and analysis, but not at the production stage.

The vaccination rift effect provides evidence that source vaccination status determines the rejection of calls to get vaccinated

COVID vaccination protects individuals and helps end the pandemic, but a sizable minority in Western countries rejects the vaccine. Vaccination status should serve as a group membership, critical communication between groups undermines trust, and we accordingly suggest that calls to get vaccinated by vaccinated sources lead to defensive rejection instead of desired behavior change. We term this the vaccination rift effect. A unique collaboration with national print, online and TV news media yielded a large (N = 1170), age-representative sample of Austrian citizens for our fully randomized experiment. Participants exhibited the vaccination rift: They ascribed less constructive motives, d = 0.28, 95% CI [0.17; 0.40], experienced more threat, d = − 0.30, 95% CI [− 0.42; − 0.19], and ascribed worse personality characteristics to vaccinated (vs. unvaccinated) commenters, d = 0.17, 95% CI [0.06; 0.29]. Constructiveness consistently predicted behavioral measures of counterarguing and vaccination planning (indirect effects B = 0.033, SE = 0.013 and B = − 0.056, SE = 0.014). The vaccination rift was substantially stronger among the critical group of unvaccinated participants, ds = |0.39–0.52|, than among those fully vaccinated, ds = |0.08–0.17|. We discuss how to apply these psychological mechanics of the vaccination rift to public campaigns.

News Discourse Analysis of Sexual Violence Causing Women to Commit Suicide in Online Media

The study discusses cases of sexual violence causing women to commit suicide in online media news discourse based on Sara Mills's perspective. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The research data is in the form of linguistic units in news discourse on sexual violence in online media. The source of the research data is several online media that discuss the discourse of news of sexual violence to the point of causing victims to commit suicide. The collection of research data is started by reading news discourses related to research topics. Recorded data was found from reading the discourse on sexual violence news in online media. Next was constructing data, reducing data, and validating data. The results of the analysis of the four discourses on news of sexual violence that cause victims of suicide in online media show that the author and the authorities as subjects who tell, the perpetrator and the victim are shown as objects told in each of the news discourses. The reader's position on news discourse 1 and news discourse 2 is shown partiality to the victim. The reader's position on news discourse 3 and news discourse 4 is not clearly displayed, so the author can identify for himself the position in the news discourse. In addition, it was found that some linguistic units contain certain meanings that are needed in research.
