RCTV's "Wewara" Program in Preserving Cirebon Local Wisdom

The rapid development of technology has made it easier for humans to communicate. Communication is a process of conveying and receiving symbols that contain a meaning, whether in the form of information, thoughts, knowledge or other forms. The researcher conducted a study related to a RCTV "Wewara" Program in preserving Cirebon Local Wisdom. The purpose of this research is so that all people and readers know the importance of maintaining local wisdom and cultural communication from an area that we live in, besides that the researcher wants to know more about the process, principles, and editorial policies of the Cirebon language contained in the "wewara" news broadcast program. This research uses a qualitative descriptive research method, by conducting an interview and conducting a direct observation in the field. The results of this study show that the agenda setting agenda in RCTV's "Wewara" Program in Preserving Cirebon Local Wisdom gives birth to three stages, namely the process of problem identification (problem stream), policy determination (policy stream) and finally the political process (political stream).

A Statistical Analysis of Factors Affecting VOT and F0 in Plosive Sounds across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean

Purpose: To conduct a statistical analysis of the acoustic features of VOT and F0 in plosive sounds across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The goal is to determine the impact of three factors—manner of articulation, place of articulation, and tone type—on VOT and F0, providing theoretical support for future "simultaneous cross-linguistic comparison studies" of plosive sounds in these three languages. Approach/Methodology/Design: A total of 792 word-initial plosives were selected from news broadcasts of official media in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Three variables—manner of articulation, place of articulation, and tone type—were set, and the S-N-K test and Bonferroni multiple comparison method were used to evaluate whether these variables had significant effects on the word-initial plosives. Findings: For VOT, the manner of articulation has the most significant effect across Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The place of articulation has a lesser impact, while tone type has no effect on VOT, except in Korean, where there is no tone distinction for word-initial plosives. For F0, tone type significantly influences F0 in Chinese, while manner and place of articulation have minimal impact. In Japanese, both manner of articulation and tone type significantly affect F0, but place of articulation does not. In Korean, only the manner of articulation significantly affects F0. Originality/Value: Previous studies on word-initial plosives in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean have primarily focused on VOT, with limited research on F0, especially for Chinese and Japanese, where studies on F0 are scarce. This study is the first to analyze different tone types of Chinese and Japanese as variables in the acoustic analysis of plosive sounds. Past studies typically involved general native speakers, with little emphasis on the standard pronunciations of professional broadcasters. With the introduction of Chinese-Korean bilingual broadcasting majors in 2021 and Chinese-Japanese bilingual broadcasting majors in 2024 in China, this research also provides theoretical support for the education and training of multilingual broadcasting professionals in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Using artificial intelligence to address mental health inequalities: co-creating machine learning algorithms with key stakeholders and citizen engagement

Purpose Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to reshape mental health practices, policies and research in the coming decade. Simultaneously, mental health inequalities persist globally, imposing considerable costs on individuals, communities and economies. This study aims to investigate the impact of AI technologies on future citizenship for individuals with mental health challenges (MHCs). Design/methodology/approach This research used a community-based participatory approach, engaging peer researchers to explore the perspectives of adults with MHCs from a peer-led mental health organisation. This study evaluated potential threats and opportunities presented by AI technologies for future citizenship through a co-created film, depicting a news broadcast set in 2042. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews and focus groups and were analysed using a reflexive thematic approach. Findings The analysis identified four key themes: Who holds the power? The divide, What it means to be human, and Having a voice. The findings indicate that adults with living experiences of MHCs are eager to influence the development of AI technologies that affect their lives. Participants emphasised the importance of activism and co-production while expressing concerns about further marginalisation. Originality/value This study provides new insights into the intersection of AI, technology and citizenship, highlighting the critical need for inclusive practices in technological advancement. By incorporating the perspectives of individuals with living experiences, this study advocates for participatory approaches in shaping AI technologies in mental health. This includes the co-creation of machine learning algorithms and fostering citizen engagement to ensure that advancements are equitable and empowering for people with MHCs.

Images of the Israel-Gaza War on Instagram: A Content Analysis of Western Broadcast News Posts

This quantitative content analysis examined how popular Western broadcast news channels—BBC News, CNN, Fox News, Sky News, and MSNBC—used Instagram (IG) to cover the initial phase of the fifth Israel–Gaza war of the 21st century, which began on October 7, 2023. The research was undergirded by framing theory and the victim/defensive mode of reporting model. Overall, findings suggest that Western broadcast IG reporting was decidedly pro-Israel. Studied outlets consistently favored Israeli and pro-Israeli sources over Palestinian and pro-Palestinian sources; highlighted Israeli victims while neglecting Palestinian victims; and framed Israeli violence as self-defense while framing Palestinian violence as aggression.

YouTube channel as a component of convergent media: role, influence and perspectives

The article aims to analyze the role of local media in shaping the public agenda during large-scale military actions in Ukraine and how to increase audience loyalty and engagement through convergent practices. In particular, the content, growth dynamics, target audience characteristics, and specific features of the YouTube channel Dnipro TV as a convergent media are considered. The city television channel has successfully transformed from a traditional broadcaster into a convergent media through its YouTube channel and other social networks. This has allowed it to expand its audience, maintain influence, and adapt to changes in the media landscape. It is noted that during two years of full-scale aggression, the number of subscribers to the Dnipro TV YouTube channel has nearly tripled. The channel hosts all the content produced by the creative team of Dnipro TV. The videos can be accessed directly from the YouTube page or via the respective section on the website. The chosen research period is characterized by, on the one hand, increased demand for local content from the city's TV channel audience due to the hostilities and security threats to the population. On the other hand, there is the involvement of the global community in events in Ukraine and the interest of displaced persons, with local content on the YouTube channel being accessible from any country. Thus, only 64.7 % of users watch videos on the YouTube channel from within Ukraine, while over 35 % view local content from other countries. The analysis also highlights changes in the audience's gender composition: before the war, women constituted the majority, while in 2023 and 2024, the male audience made up 54 %, compared to 45.9 % female. The convergent local media Dnipro TV attracts its audience with news broadcasts, a series of original programs, and talk shows, all of which can be found on YouTube and watched at a convenient time. We believe that the development of this channel as a convergent media with multiplatform content representation holds great promise.

Individual refresh ability modulates irrelevant speech effect in reading: Evidence from eye movements

This study randomly recruited 245 college students aged between 18 and 21 years old who had never studied Spanish and selected 60 subjects (30 with high refresh ability and 30 with low refresh ability) based on their scores on a refresh ability test. The mixed experimental design of 2 (refresh ability: high, low) ×3 (background sound: meaningful, meaningless, silent) was adopted. The Eyelink1000 eye tracker was used to record the eye movement data of the subjects when reading the sentences of scientific papers. At the same time, meaningful (news broadcasting) or meaningless (Spanish) background sounds are played. Based on this, the moderating effect of individual refresh ability with the impact of irrelevant speech was investigated. According to the results, the interaction between refresh ability and the meaningful background sound condition was significant, and it had an impact on the totalreading time, gaze count, regression count, total fixation time, and regression-path duration. However, the interaction with the meaningless background sound condition was not significant. The results showed that: (1) refresh ability significantly regulates the irrelevant speech effect in reading, compared with individuals with high refresh ability. The meaningful background sounds have a greater negative impact on the reading of individuals with low refresh ability; (2) the regulating effect of refresh ability occurs in the late stage of vocabulary processing and semantic integration. The results supported the attentional capture theory and found that the irrelevant speech effect in Chinese reading is modulated by individual refresh ability, which mainly acts on semantic components in late reading processing.

Does Tribe Trump Facts? Novel Measures of Hostile Media

A national panel survey (n = 1,332) oversampled partisans (40% Democrat, 40% Republican, 20% Independent) and exposed them to an experiment showing partisan news sources (Fox News Channel and MSNBC) and partisan content, in a test of hostile media perception. Partisans did not find the news outlets to be hostile but did find out-group content to be hostile. The study also compared partisan cable news with broadcast TV news and found that viewers of traditional broadcast news (both network and local) were more moderate and viewed the news, and news sources, as less hostile. This study is also one of the first to examine the role of emerging social media outlets which have reportedly been embraced on the right, including Parler, Telegram, MeWe, Gab, Gettr, and Rumble.

Analisis Proses Produksi Program Siaran Berita Padang Pagi Ini Di Pro 1

This thesis is entitled "Analysis of the Production Process of Padang Pagi Ini News Broadcast Program at Pro 1 Radio Republik Indonesia Padang". The purpose of this research is to find out the production process of the news broadcast program "Padang Pagi Ini" at Pro 1 RRI Padang and to find out the factors that influence the production process of the news broadcast "Padang Pagi Ini" at Pro 1 RRI Padang. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. As a qualitative descriptive researcher, the researcher will only describe the situation or event, not looking for relationships, not testing hypotheses or making predictions. the results showed that the stages of the production process of "Padang Pagi Ini" are the same as the production process of radio programs in general, including: pre-production stages, production stages, post-production stages and factors affecting news production at RRI Padang are human resources, technology, content management, broadcasting regulations, and audience feedback. The production team consists of journalists, reporters, producers, editors, and technicians who have competencies and experience that affect the quality of the news presented. Technology such as digital cameras, video editing software and digital transmission systems facilitate the news production process.

The (ever)changing face of news, with broadcast interviews in focus

In this paper I intend to shed light on broadcast news interviews with a focus on the increasing role of video-mediated platforms. To do so, I first overview the rules of conduct journalists are required to follow, pondering on whether the shift to video-platforms has made substantial changes to what recommended in manuals and posited in scholarly studies. Then, I illustrate a corpus-based case study of news interviews carried out by professional journalists with Chinese and Russian diplomats. Similarities and differences between face-to-face and video-mediated interviews as well as between Chinese and Russian interviewees have been identified, with special reference to (a) the format of the questions posed by the journalists, (b) their degree of compliance to the traditional ground rules of conduct in the Q&A interface, (c) the role of the interviewees’ lingua-cultural background and (d) reference to the audience.

“Standard” Appearance and “Accentless” Speech: How Performance Neutrality Limits Diversity in Broadcast News

Scholars commonly reference journalistic neutrality, but not in the context of self-presentation. This study examines how journalists feel compelled to demonstrate neutrality through their performance of self. Through in-depth interviews ( n = 57) with broadcast journalists and those who shape their on-air presentation, I explore the construct of performance neutrality, identifying dimensions related to speech, appearance, and demeanor. Journalists negotiated expectations of performance neutrality by conforming to—and in some cases challenging—restrictive institutionalized norms. Drawing on social constructionism theory and the notion of White normativity, I argue that neutrality is a false ideal that upholds the status quo and limits diversity in broadcast journalism.

“What the Heck Is Going on in the Group!”: Challenging Journalistic Authority by Pseudo-Professional WhatsApp News Groups

ABSTRACT This paper addresses the ways new entrants and mobile technologies have become significant challenges to the old news’ legitimacy models by focusing on pseudo-professional WhatsApp news groups from a journalistic authority standpoint. Based on a comparative textual analysis of how a breaking news event was handled by a leading Israeli pseudo-professional WhatsApp news group, compared to how it was covered by the Israeli News13 TV news broadcast, the findings indicate how, by adopting professional news practices and establishing unique relations of information exchange with traditional news outlets, journalistic authority is challenged by pseudo-professional WhatsApp news groups in today’s mobile news environment.

Cognitive and sociolectal constraints on the theme-recipient alternation: evidence from Mandarin

Abstract We explore the cognitive and sociolectal constraints that probabilistically regulate the theme-recipient (or “dative”) alternation in modern varieties of Mandarin and how these constraints interact with each other. Based on an extensively annotated corpus dataset and regression modeling, we found that the probabilistic grammar that shapes the theme-recipient alternation is fundamentally stable across regional and genre varieties of Mandarin. This general stability notwithstanding, significant variation regarding the importance of cognitive constraints across different sociolectal constraints is detected. Crucially, the analysis revealed that recipient syntactic complexity has a much greater effect in Taiwan Mandarin than in Mainland Mandarin. The effect of theme concreteness is also found to be significantly reduced in telephone conversations compared to broadcast news. Corpus-based findings were cross-validated using a psycholinguistic rating task experiment. While the results of the two approaches demonstrate substantial overlap, they also exhibit diverging patterns at the level of interaction between regional variety and recipient complexity, potentially indicating nuanced differences between the two approaches. The findings provide evidence that interactional patterns between cognitive and sociolectal constraints on probabilistic grammatical alternations may be shared across languages, despite their distinct socio-cultural factors that shape variation in human interaction.

The satirical cinema of journalists. Mass media characters and stories by the Hollywood industry (1970-2020)

Journalism is a historic profession. A target of criticism and the result of technological adaptations, it is used by the film industry to create characters who use journalistic skills, verify sources or create exclusives, to therefore promote a democratic society with truth and independence, as part of their plots. To do this, a quantitative and qualitative content analysis is carried out on six representative American comedies in the last half century - Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976), Broadcast News (James L. Brooks, 1987), The Paper (Ron Howard, 1994), Chicago (Rob Marshall, 2002), Morning Glory (Roger Michell, 2010), and Don't Look Up (Adam McKay, 2021)- based on humor theories and agenda setting theory. By using humorous resources and journalistic praxis, an overview is made of how journalism is portrayed on the big screen through satire, which results in an image rooted in frivolous stereotypes, jokes and sharp responses denouncing sensationalism and infotainment. It is a debate that makes viewers aware of the importance of journalism and that, though laughter, a critical vision fluctuates by satirizing their skills under the deconstructive capacity of humor that reflects American society.

Dropping ‘truth bombs’? The framing of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in Indian broadcast news

AbstractIn a late October 2022 international YouGov public opinion poll, findings indicated that more Indians attributed responsibility for the Russian invasion of Ukraine to ‘the West’ rather than Russia (28% compared to 27%, while 45% indicated both were accountable or expressed uncertainty). This study seeks to elucidate why such perceptions prevail, drawing upon the longstanding strategic partnership between the former Soviet Union and, subsequently, Russia, with India dating back to the 1950s and the portrayal of the Russian invasion within Indian broadcast news media. We argue that the media coverage of the conflict exhibits three main frames: the invasion as an attack by Russia on Ukrainian sovereignty, an anti-West pro-Russia frame, and a perspective aligning with Indian national interests. Both international and domestic proponents of these frames actively seek to shape the narrative presented, with media organizations deciding which frames to prioritize and which political actors to endorse. Consequently, we argue that the news media plays a pivotal role in shaping public perceptions of the conflict, influencing the Indian government's approach toward the war.

Information Needs to Influence the Quality of Development Messages and News in the Digital Media Era

The presence of development journalists is needed to criticize, study, evaluate, and report on the relevance of development projects. The press, as the fourth pillar of democracy, has a very crucial role in conveying criticism. The research aims to analyze the influence of society's information needs (X1), politics (X2), and government (X3) on the quality of development messages (Y1) and news (Y2). The research methodology uses a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanation strategy. The research population covers television news viewers and observers. The research sample consisted of 110 respondents who were viewers and observers of news broadcasts in mainstream media. The research results show: (1) there is a significant influence between the information need variable based on the community perspective (X1) on the quality of development messages (Y1); (2) there is no significant influence between the variable information needs based on the perspective of the business world (X2), politics (X3), and government (X4) on news quality (Y2), but there is an influence of public information needs (X1) on news quality (Y2). Based on information from press representative institutions, there was a decline in quality caused by: (1) complaints of violations from the Indonesian Broadcasting Institution; (2) less attractive news packaging; (4) social media competition; (5) in-depth news analysis; (6) intervention from stakeholders; (7) lack of cross-sectoral support; and (8) the small compensation received by journalists. In conclusion, information needs based on society's perspective do not influence the quality of development messages but do influence the quality of news.

Not playing the game: Political talk, hybridity and performance

This article looks at two prominent news interviews by non-political actors; one an accountability interview and the other part of a panel discussion. It shows how the exchanges contest the conventions of the journalistic interview, deploying a range of unorthodox verbal and non-verbal tactics. The accountability interview, broadcast on Sky News and posted on X (Twitter), includes a heightened performative component, using a variety of techniques to foreground verbal and embodied incredulity. This attracted widespread public and journalistic comment, and produces a manner of engagement that evades conventional language analysis. Performance is a still more prominent factor in the second example, which analyses an appearance by a professional comedian on a BBC political discussion programme. This sustains a comedic persona based upon an enactment of mock-sincerity, contesting the conventional forms of mediated political talk and commentary. Together, these performances are assessed in the context of increasing hybridity in broadcast news, and the article suggests their significance extends beyond their status as sharable media spectacle, such that they show how popular forms of performance can challenge the institutional norms of neutralism.

YouTube as a Source of Information on Air Pollution: Significance for Community Health.

Air pollution is a pervasive global public health threat. The purpose of this study was to assess the content of 100 widely viewed English language YouTube videos on air pollution using the search term 'air pollution.' Content categories were created using comprehensive fact sheets and were coded as being present or not in each video. Cumulatively, the 100 videos sampled received 32,826,294 views and 303,692 likes, with averages of 328,263 and 3,068 respectively. The majority of videos (n = 72) were created by broadcast or internet-based news, 12 of the videos were created by professionals, 7 were created by a consumer and 9 were created by others. Three kinds of content were featured in a majority (> 50%) of the videos: "sources of pollution," "environmental impacts," and "solutions offered" and the videos covering each of these topics collectively garnered more than 26 million views and 249,000 likes. Independent one-tailed t-tests (α = 0.05) showed an association between covering sources of pollution and the number of views and likes. For both, videos featuring this content had a higher average number of views (467,391.08 vs. 80,924.03, p = .0383) and likes (4,450.78 vs. 647.03, p = .0383). Additionally, videos showing environmental impacts received more views than those that did not (547,901.49 vs. 80,585.43, p = .0373). This research can serve as a starting point to describe information being conveyed about an important global public health problem. Future research is needed to improve understanding about ways to utilize YouTube and other social media for public health education and advocacy to increase consumers' awareness and facilitate the informed decision-making process.

An efficient provably secure authentication and key agreement protocol for satellite communication networks

AbstractThe leverage of satellite resources to establish a communication network offers a wide range of benefits, including the capability to support news gathering, broadcasting, and aeronautical and maritime tracking. The unique aspects of the satellite‐linked terrestrial network provide high‐speed services, dependable and consistent network quality, and comprehensive geographic coverage of remote regions. Unfortunately, these structural features also render the network vulnerable to unauthorized intrusion, potentially leading to significant disruptions. Consequently, the implementation of authentication measures presents an appealing solution for enhancing the overall service quality of this network. Recently, Kumar et al. presented an authentication and key agreement scheme for satellite communications. Strikingly, their scheme proves inadequate in safeguarding against several malicious attacks and reveals certain design weaknesses. In this article, we present a reliable and secure authentication protocol that takes advantage of the complexities inherent in the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem. We assess the protocol's effectiveness against various types of attacks using formal proof, Burrows–Abadi–Needham logic, informal descriptive proof analysis, and the verification tool SCYTHER. Furthermore, we compare the computational, communication, and storage overhead of our proposed protocol to an existing one, demonstrating its efficiency and superiority.

Al-Quds Issues in The Media: A Comparative Study of Aqsa T.V. And Palestine T.V. Coverage During the American Embassy Relocating

This article examines the coverage of Al-Quds/Jerusalem issues by Palestinian political parties, FATAH and HAMAS, on their affiliated television channels, Palestine TV and Aqsa TV, respectively. The study aims to investigate the influence of political parties and religious perspectives on the coverage of Al-Quds and determine the significance of Al-Quds as a national issue for Palestinians. The study focuses on the period surrounding the relocation of the American embassy to Al-Quds, from 13 May to 19 May 2018, where 24 Arabic news broadcasts were collected. The study utilizes the Agenda Setting Theory to analyze the role of Aqsa TV in shaping public opinion and perceptions of Al-Quds. Through content analysis of prime-time news broadcasts from both channels during a specific week, the findings reveal differences in the prioritized topics, placement within the news, media formats employed, and duration of coverage. Palestine TV emphasizes the civil aspects of Al-Quds from a national perspective. At the same time, Aqsa TV highlights the religious significance of the Islamic-Jewish conflict. The study concludes that the news coverage of Al-Quds reflects the political agendas of FATAH and HAMAS and suggests further research on the contrasting portrayals of Al-Quds issues in Palestinian and Israeli media.
