Design and construction of the MUSE permanent magnet stellarator

This paper documents the design and construction of MUSE, the world's first permanent magnet (PM) stellarator and the first quasi-axisymmetric experiment. The purpose of MUSE is to develop and assess a new way of building optimised stellarators that uses simple planar coils PMs. Our PM optimisation algorithm consists of initialising a geometry to pack dipoles densely, running the FAMUS code to minimise surface field error subject to PM constraints and applying discrete jumps to reach a physically realisable solution. FAMUS treats the PM system as a set of ideal point dipoles. From there we construct finite-volume magnet towers to be housed in 3D-printed PM holders. We describe the design of the PM holders, which were validated by laser metrology. We analyse the effects of finite permeability, sensitivity to perturbations and magnetostatic forces. An exact analytic formula for the magnetic field from a finite-volume PM tower is presented to compute PM–PM forces and stress on the PM holder. Stellarator construction is complete and experiments are underway.

Digital Storytelling Melalui Media Sosial dalam Aktivitas Kehumasan Pada Perguruan Tinggi Alih Status

Transferring the status from a private university to a state university makes the Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta has more responsibility in the management and governance of communication. Therefore available social media as PR tools that can be reached by all stakeholders is significant. As an institution engaged in education, UPN Veteran Jakarta is active in using social media and has even made achievements. In PR activities of UPN Veteran Jakarta as the new state university through social media, the form of communication is carried out in the form of the use of stories or narratives combined with various elements or known as digital storytelling. Therefore, researchers are interested in researching digital storytelling through social media at UPN Veteran Jakarta as a university that is experiencing a status change. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive using the case study method. The object of research is focused on digital storytelling on the activities of all social media accounts owned by UPN Veteran Jakarta. The research data collection was carried out through (1) observation in the form of daily monitoring of the activities of all social media, (2) interviews with leaders and PR staff of UPN Veteran Jakarta. The study found that digital storytelling is a new way of building and maintaining brand reputation, spoken-content is the main key in digital storytelling, and social media makes digital storytelling more powerful and impactful.

EL “POLICUBO” COMO HERRAMIENTA DIDÁCTICA PARA FAVORECER EL PROCESO DE ENSEÑANZA-APRENDIZAJE DE LA CONSTRUCCIÓN INDUSTRIALIZADA

La asignatura Construcciones II “A” de la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo de la Universidad Nacional del Nordeste aborda la problemática del diseño de sistemas constructivos no convencionales: prefabricación no integral, prefabricación integral y la aplicación de sistemas alternativos (“Ballon Frame” y “Steel Frame”) y contenedores metálicos. El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en analizar el conjunto de viviendas llamado “Kubuswoningen”, localizado en Rotterdam, Holanda y sus posibles aplicaciones en el desarrollo proyectos creativos para utilizar la idea como disparador de la motivación de los estudiantes, estimulándolos en el proceso de diseño, y analizar también los principios geométricos constructivos del “policubo”, que permiten reconocer nuevas formas de responder a la demanda habitacional a la vez que se priorizan los espacios urbanos, recurriendo a la industrialización como herramienta constructiva. La metodología de análisis es de carácter descriptivo, teniendo como base el estudio de obras diseñadas a partir del policubo. Basados en dicho análisis, vemos que la utilización de una modulación puede generar trabajos innovadores en el desarrollo de proyectos de construcción industrializada, explorar nuevas formas de construir y de considerar al hábitat humano, de forma tal que responda a las necesidades humanas y ambientales para fomentar su difusión y desarrollo local.

Design and construction of high-rise modular buildings based on recent projects

The technology of modular construction is developing rapidly. Information was therefore collected on recent medium- and high-rise projects to evaluate the state of the art of construction practice and to prepare design and construction guidance. This paper reviews the principles that guided the design, manufacture and construction of some recent high-rise modular buildings in the UK. In the absence of specific design and execution standards for modular buildings, the paper shows how existing requirements for steel construction can be adapted for this new way of building. The paper also covers the economic arguments for modular construction and summarises factory production methods.

11-1:Invited Paper: Convergence of Lighting and Display: Opportunities, Requirements, Challenges

With LED and OLED taking over the general lighting market, and OLED being the most promising successor technology to LCD with whatever backlight source, both areas have begun to converge. This leads to completely new ways of building and controlling general lighting systems, but also to the possibility (and necessity) to rethink the currently mostly disjunct roles of general lighting and information displays. In the article, we will discuss some of these new possibilities, as well as some of the implications coming with those.

Scholarly reputation in the digital age and the role of emerging platforms and mechanisms

Structural changes to the scholarly environment are taking place as a result of the introduction of Web 2.0 technologies, which have given rise to Open Science 2.0 initiatives, such as open access publishing, open data, citizen science, and open peer evaluation systems. In turn, this is leading to new ways of building, showcasing, and measuring scholarly reputation through emerging platforms, such as ResearchGate. The article reports the findings of a survey of the opinions and practices of 251 European scholars about this emerging scholarly market. Findings showed that traditional research-related activities, including conducting and collaborating in research, taking part in multidisciplinary projects, and publishing in journals contribute most to scholarly reputation. The greatest weaknesses of reputational platforms were a lack of trustworthiness and being open to gaming. The large majority of researchers, despite some reservations, thought that reputational systems were here to stay and will become increasingly important in the future, and especially for younger researchers.

Reversible Architecture for a Sustainable Future. Finding out Key Design Guidelines in Early Disassembled Systems

Natural designs are energetically optimal. As a part of this ecosystem, human actions are bound to be integrated in the biological cycle, leading to recover and reuse all we manufacture and produce, and properly return it back into the natural environment. In this sense, r eversible and demountable architecture is one of the best answers to attend this proposal. Architects and builders are forced today to develop new ways of building. Instead of demolishing structures thus obtaining piles of unrecoverable rubble, there is the baseline option for buildin g systems to be disassemble d and their components reused, processed and reassembled. Therefore, existing buildings could serve as raw material, replacing the resourcing of the natural environment. Technically, construction consists in the assembly of pieces, and in this context, joints become the most important element in the definition of the building. Dry and mechanical connections, as those joints where pieces that are intact in form and dimension are connected, can be properly disassembled. This research is based on the identification and the analysis of the main building systems with high potential of disassembly erected through time. The first stage is based in those systems built in the early ages up to the times of the Scientific Revolution. It is in ancient and traditional architecture where we find in a clear and obvious way the precise balance in the correspondence between elements, space, form and function, obtaining the proper integration for each environment. On the second stage it is intended to assess the evolution of each solution and to establish its connection with more recent ones. There is no construction system that has completely disappeared after its invention. Essential innovative technologies remain active even they may continue to exist only in small areas, or only for supporting periodical renovations. Every construction system applied in the present supports its equivalence with another used in the past. Following this discussion, a careful reading of ancient architectural systems is able to provide the basis to define the design guidelines of reversible architecture for a more sustainable future. New ways of building, showcasing, and measuring scholarly reputation

ABSTRACTThe article reports on a study of the views and actions of nearly a hundred scholars – mostly academic researchers from four European countries and four disciplines – in regard to scholarly reputation in the Science 2.0 age. It specifically looks at the role that 'emerging reputational mechanisms and platforms are playing in building, maintaining, and showcasing scholarly reputation in the digital age. Popular examples of such platforms are ResearchGate and Academia.edu. Data were obtained through one‐to‐one interviews and focus groups, supported by desk research. The main findings were: (a) it is early days and uptake is light and patchy with platforms largely used for non‐reputational purposes, such as sharing documents; (b) most users were passive and did not fully engage with the social aspects of the platforms; (c) the reputational focus was very much on just one scholarly activity (research), on just two outputs of that activity (publications and conferences) and one measurement of that activity (citations), but there are the stirrings of change; (d) young researchers are set to profit most from the emerging platforms.

Life Cycle Assessment of a passive house in a seismic temperate zone

This paper presents the results of a detailed LCA study of a low-energy consumption building (thermal energy for heating equal to 11kWh/m2year) located in Perugia, Italy, according to European ISO 14040 and 14044. The building matches the criteria of environmental sustainability and bio-architecture, complying with the “PassivHaus” standard. All life cycle phases were included in the research: acquisition and production of materials, on-site construction and use/maintenance, demolition and material disposal (100% landfilling and demolition with waste recycling). A life span of 70 years was considered.The research was therefore focused on cradle-to-grave life, based on data collected by authors, integrated with data from the literature. In particular the study was carried out to analyze: the benefits due to the use of recycled materials, a solar PV (during the utilization years) and the final demolition of the building. The LCA modeling was performed using the SimaPro software application, connected to the ecoinvent database. The results show that applying energy saving measures (highly insulated building envelope and passive-house standard, solar PV, waste recycling and recycled products in pre-production phase) could significantly decrease the impact of modern dwellings, with the consciousness that new ways of building do not always provide a positive environmental outcome.

Energy Performance of Greenhouse for Energy Saving in Buildings

Nowadays it is necessary to reduce the energy consumptions of the built environment. This problem has led, in the last years, to a series of regulations to promote high performance systems. These can create a new way of building that is aware of the energetic consumptions. Besides the systems to use the solar radiation to produce energy (as active solar systems i.e. solar thermal collectors and photovoltaic modules) there are the passive solar systems such as the greenhouse. The greenhouse systems have a great potential to improve quality of living and energy performance of the buildings. However, it is now important to adopt a valid evaluation method to assess the project efficiency. There are already spreadsheets (for example SERRA 5000, based on Method 5000 and SERRA 832, based on UNI EN 832/2001) which can evaluate energy performance and verify the effectiveness. The purpose of this research concerns the update of the existing spreadsheets for the winter (UNI EN ISO 13790/2008) and the definition of added spreadsheet for the summer period. In order to test this evaluation method, a case study has been evaluated and discuss.

Paradigm Shift of Green Buildings in the Construction Industry

The green building movement continues to change the construction industry to not only mitigate environmental problems and challenges associated with construction activities, but also to optimize potential economic and social benefits of incorporating green building strategies and technologies in the built environment. This paradigm change in the construction industry is helping the industry to gain experience with this new way of building and changing its expectations for new hires from construction programs in the United States. To gauge this change, this study investigated the status, perceptions, and future directions associated with the green building movement in construction-related companies in the United States. In addition, the study also identified industry expectations of new hires in terms of green construction knowledge and skills, and the expectations and perceptions about the future of the industry with regard to the green building movement. A survey research method was used to capture current experience levels and capabilities of companies with regard to green construction. Expectations and perceptions about the future of the construction industry with regard to green building were obtained from construction-related companies recruiting from the Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech from 2006 and 2008. The findings of this study support the growing importance of green building as a component of the whole construction market and provide a benchmark against which to measure future changes in the industry over time.

Can we grow buildings? Concepts and requirements for automated nano- to meter-scale building

The construction industry will have to find new ways of building to accomplish radical reductions of pollution and waste. Nano and biotechnology along with information technology have the potential to constitute a new building paradigm. The paper describes the concept of nano- to meter-scale building, which is based on this potential. The concept is not focused on the application of nanomaterials like nanosilica or carbon nanotubes, but on a new way of building, which unfolds from the nano into the meter range. It is based on bionanorobots, producing building materials using carbon extracted from CO 2 in the air. Criteria and requirements regarding relevant technologies are defined and compared to the current research in the fields of bioengineering, nanorobotics, and characteristics and production of carbon nanotubes. The paper also presents a concept of a new building technology that would enable control and monitoring of construction at the nano level, as well as requirements regarding design methods and tools including the building information model that will become the only human input to the automated nano- to meter-scale building process. The paper concludes with suggestions for further research and development.

Diseño y construcción de muros en el primer gótico cordobés

The first Christian Churches of Cordoba constitute a homogeneous set, which was started up during a short period of time at the end of the XIIIth century. These facts make them an ideal set of buildings to study their typical constructive solutions, among which the wall systems are of outstanding importance. Using grand stonework, they are built adapting the Christian techniques from the North of the Iberian Peninsula to the local traditions and they make use of the available Islamic stones. This fact influenced the stonework, by the alternate positioning of the stones, one longitudinally and the next transversally. Nevertheless, the wall was gothic of three parts, with two stone walls, and an inner filling. This constructive system, together with the foundation characteristics, the mortar used, or the possible use of the measuring stick of Burgos as the measure unit, are the reflection of a new way of building in the city, and show evidence of the possible intervention of castillian stonemasons. The dimensional analysis of the architectural set allows the detection of the underlying logic and coherence in the assignment of the wall widths. There is graduation among them according to their circumstances and their positions within the building, as well as dimensional coincidences among the different buildings for the same type of wall. All of these show evidence of preestablished rules, probably very easy. Finally, the objective knowledge of all these aspects contribute interesting data about the building process, that frequently prioritizes the apses; and also, in almost destroyed buildings like the S. Andres Church, it is possible to elaborate rigorous hypothesis for its reconstruction.

Green Construction: Contractor Experiences, Expectations, and Perceptions

As the benefits of green building continue to change the Architecture/Engineering/Construction industry and the number of green projects rises in the United States due to market changes, more construction firms are gaining experience with this new way of building and changing their expectations for new hires from degree-granting construction programs. This paper documents a baseline study of contractor experiences, expectations, and perceptions associated with green building conducted in Fall 2006. The study was based on detailed survey results from 87 different companies recruiting from three major university construction programs in the eastern United States (Auburn, Purdue, and Virginia Tech). The survey collected data regarding current experience levels and capabilities of companies with regard to green construction, corporate expectations of new hires in terms of green construction knowledge and skills, and respondent expectations and perceptions about the future of the industry with regard to green projects. The findings of this study support the growing importance of green building as a component of the whole construction market and provide a benchmark against which to measure future changes in the industry over time.
