From around 1990, many new types of fibers and textiles began to be released onto the market by synthetic-fiber companies. Known as shingosen, these synthetic-fiber textiles are characterized by their innovatory texture, touch, and appearance and created a new paradigm and fashion among the textile industries. Shingosen can be divided into four main categories, namely, ‘lightly fluffed’, ‘new silky’, ‘new worsted’, and ‘dry’. However, these shingosen textiles have gradually changed over a period of ten years, and there are those that have remained on the market and others that have already been replaced. We review here how the most recent types of shingosen are changing and developing by taking a look at products developed by Toray. We present the leading Toray products in accordance with these four categories in order to examine new directions in this field. Products on the lines demarcating the four categories are new products resulting from new trends and tastes. Bearing in mind limitations on the space available to us here, we hope to provide a simple, generalized account of the technology involved in the creation of these products and a description of the main features of the products, while bringing to light the main trends and technology connected with product development. Many new functional textiles have appeared in the gradually expanding market for sportswear, and we have witnessed the development of a whole series of new functional fibers and textiles. We present as concisely as possible the state of development of sportswear materials, which may be considered to be the most representative types of functional textile produced by Toray, and the key points of the technology that underpins these textiles.
