The range of demands on the health system is widening constantly, and it is forseeable that in the near future the activities of prevention, rehabilitation, reproduction, aesthetics and identity production, as well as with social organization, will become more important than the strictly curative tasks. The role played by new types of families has to be underlined, as well as the role of inmigrant families, a manifestation, at the health level, of the consequences of globalization. The study offers much information published for the first time and ends with a forecast of the changes in the health care demands in Europe, due to demographic transformations.

Patriarchy and Married Women's Property in England: Questions on Some Current Views

THE AUTHORS OF SEVERAL RECENT IMPORTANT HISTORIES of the family agree that the sentimental nuclear family of Western society is a development of the last three centuries.' They argue that the family type that prevailed in earlier, more traditional times was founded almost entirely on economic or other pragmatic considerations, that it was characterized by formality and distance rather than by love, psychological commitment, or intimacy, and that, not being distinctly separated from the outside world, it placed little value on privacy. By contrast, they argue, by the late seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries, families were becoming much more like the modern nuclear As personal factors came to compete with economic ones regarding the choice of spouse, both husbands and wives and parents and children became more intimate and psychologically committed to each other, and the family turned in from the outside world toward a newly valued sphere of domestic privacy. In addition, it is claimed that the new type of family was significantly less patriarchal than its predecessor, in its relations both between husbands and wives, and between parents and children. It was, to quote the title of one of its celebrants, an egalitarian family.

An Annotated Bibliography of the Remarried, the Living Together, and Their Children

This bibliography was developed by the Remarried Consultation Center of the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services of New York City for our own use. Because there is a growing interest in remarriage and the new types of families this social phenomenon creates, we became convinced that the meager number of articles and books in this area would be of interest to others. We have focused our attention on the now common phenomenon of the remarried and those living together in a committed relationship situation. Some articles that were not designed as studies of remarriage situations are included because their content is pertinent to our subject. The bibliography is divided into six sections to facilitated reference use. It should be noted, however, that these sections are not rigid and that some items could readily have been included under two or more sections. Articles included cover publication dates through April 1978. The six sections are: I. Demography; II. Remarried Couples; III. Stepparents and Stepchildren; IV. Divorce as a Precursor to Remarriage; V. Children of Divorce in Relation to Remarriage; VI. Remarriage-Prophylactic and Therapeutic Aspects. Unfortunately we did not find sufficient material to warrant a section on theoretical aspects. We have tried to make this bibliography as complete as possible using two computer retrieval systems as well as our own search of the literature.
