Recent Papers on Marine Animals

AMONG papers on various groups of marine animals in serial and other publications which have recently reached us, reference may first be made to a fasciculus of “Illustrations of the Zoology of the Indian Survey Ship Investigator, “containing plates devoted to new and other species of fishes, entomostracous crustaceans, and molluscs. In addition to certain deep-sea forms, the fishes include two species of skate, described by Dr. R. E. Lloyd in 1906, several kinds of stalked barnacles are figured, and the molluscs include seven species, described by Mr. E. A. Smith in the year already mentioned, of which the shells are for the first time depicted.

Marine Zoology at the Cape 1

THE third volume of reports on the Cape marine fauna contains ten papers published between 1904 and 1905. Of these memoirs, two dealing with eighteen new species of fish and the development of South African fishes, are by Dr Gilchrist, to whose enterprise and ability these sustained and extended investigation of the resources of the Cape seas are largely due. In this work he has been ably seconded by European Colleagues. Prof. McIntosh contributes two papers on the polychæt annelids; Prof. Hickson a second report on the Alcyonaria; Prof. Jeffrey Bell three contributions, dealing respectively with the echinoid, asteroid, and ophiuroid echinoderms; Mr. Stanley Gardiner publishes a careful study of the turbinolid corals; and Prof. Cleve submits a first instalment of a study of the South African marine plankton.

II.—Note on the Geology of the Osborne Beds

The fossil shrimps or prawns briefly described in the preceding paper by Dr. H. Woodward occur in the ‘fish-clay’ of the Osborne Series at Chapelcorner Copse, Binstead House, Ryde House, and Sea View, Isle of Wight, and they were first discovered by me in these beds about the year 1876. Having regard to the fact that new species of fish, etc., have been recently obtained from the Osborne Beds, it would seem that these prawns are very probably also new to English strata.

IT is a striking proof of the high estimation in which science is held by the authorities of the Congo Free State that they have devoted, so much expense to the publication of the beautiful volume now before us, and it, is also fortunate for science that the material was placed in the hands of so highly competent an ichthyologist as Mr. Boulenger. Already a lavishly illustrated quarto volume (“Annales du Musée du Congo”) had been issued containing descriptions and figures, by the same author, of new genera and species of fishes recently discovered in the Congo, and now comes the present work, the twenty-five plates of which are “half-tone” reproductions of the lithographs illustrating the descriptions in the “Annales.” Les Poissons du Bassin du Congo.
