Cambarus (Tubericambarus) stockeri (Decapoda: Cambaridae) a new species of plesiomorphic Cambarus from Georgia and Tennessee with zoogeographic affinity to Cambarus (Depressicambatus) cymatilis

Abstract A new species of crayfish, Cambarus (Tubericambarus) stockeri, is described from northern Georgia and southern Tennessee within the Ridge and Valley Physiographic Province of North America. Of the recognized members of the subgenus, it is the most physically divergent form discovered to date. It is easily distinguished from other recognized members of the subgenus, and all other members of the genus Cambarus Erichson 1846, by the extensive tuberculation of the chelae. Cambarus (T.) stockeri has tubercles over most of the dorsal and ventral chelae surface, a character state common in members of Procambarus Ortmann, 1905b. This new species was frequently found in association with Cambarus (T.) acanthura, Hobbs, 1981 and Cambarus (Depressicambarus) cymatilis, Hobbs, 1970 and shares a close zoogeographic association with the latter species.

Abstract Recent fieldwork in the Shoal Creek drainage of the Tennessee River drainage in Tennessee has uncovered the presence of a new species of crayfish in the formerly monotypic genus Barbicambarus. The new species differs from the type species in possessing a median carina, less dense setae on the antennae, a less angular central projection, a spine at the dorsodistal margin of the merus of the cheliped, and a high level of divergence in the COI gene region. Collecting efforts have so far found the new taxon at only two locations and it is thought to be rare.

A new spinose crayfish of the genus Cambarus, subgenus Puncticambarus (Decapoda: Cambaridae), from South Carolina

Abstract Cambarus (Puncticambarus) aldermanorum is a new species of crayfish that appears to be endemic to the lower Catawba and Saluda river basins in the Piedmont Plateau of South Carolina. Morphologically, it is most similar to C. (P.) hobbsorum and C. (P.) hystricosus. It differs from both species in having a long, narrow, lanceolate rostrum, and in lacking a proximomesial tubercle or spine on the ventral surface of the carpus. It further differs from C. (P.) hobbsorum in having hepatic spines, in other aspects of spination, and in having a broader areola. Cambarus (P.) spicatus of the Broad River basin is another very spinose crayfish that bears some resemblances to C. (P.) aldermanorum, from which it differs in having a broader rostrum with a very short acumen that is delineated at its base by marginal spines or tubercles, and a much broader, more punctate areola.

Orconectes (Procericambarus) raymondi (Decapoda: Cambaridae), a new species of crayfish from southern Ohio

A new species of crayfish, Orconectes (Procericambarus) raymondi, is described from unglaciated portions of south-central Ohio, North America. Of the recognized members of the subgenus, it is morphologically most similar to Orconectes (P.) putnami, found in Kentucky and Tennessee and is easily separated from it by the presence of a strong rostral carina. It is distinguished from other recognized members of the subgenus by the rostral carina, mandible structure, and a first form male gonopod having a central projection approximately 50% of total gonopod length. An amended version of Taylor's key to the members of the Orconectes juvenilis complex is provided.

Orconectes (Trisellescens) taylori, a new species of crayfish from western Tennessee (Decapoda: Cambaridae)

A new species of crayfish, Orconectes taylori, is described from tributaries of the North Fork Obion River in western Tennessee (common name: Crescent Crayfish). It occurs in small to medium size sandy bottom streams, and is found in leaf litter and woody debris along the banks. It belongs to the subgenus Trisellescens Bouchard & Bouchard, 1995 and can be distinguished from other species in the group by a combination of the length and curvature of the central projection of the form I gonopod, carina on the rostrum, appressed tubercles on the margin of the palm of the chela, and width of the areola. ABSTRACT A new species of crayfish, Procambarus (Austrocambarus) maya, is described from a salt marsh in the Sian Ka'an Nature Reserve, Quintana Roo, Mexico. The new species is most similar morphologically to Procambarus (A.) llamasi Villalobos, 1954, from which it can be distinguished by the absence of pubescence on the chelae; a gonopod with a large, mesially concave, blade-like mesial process, and a central projection and cephalic process basally fused. Other differences that separate the new species from P. llamasi are: the chelae are more slender, with the dactyli being longer than the palms; a pentagonal epistome, not heptagonal; a longer and more acute acumen; lateral spines of the rostrum and distolateral spine of the antennal scale more acute; antennal angle of the carapace with a well developed spine instead of a small projection; two spines on the pterygostomian angle of the carapace instead of three or four; and a narrower areola in which the suprabranchial grooves converge dorsally in less th...

A new species of crayfish of the genus Cambarus Erichson, 1846 (Decapoda: Cambaridae) from the eastern Blue Ridge foothills and western Piedmont Plateau of North Carolina

Cambarus (Puncticambarus) johni is a new species of crayfish from the eastern Blue Ridge foothills and western Piedmont Plateau of North Carolina, where it occurs in streams in the upper Broad, Catawba, and Yadkin-Pee Dee river basins. It shares similarities with other stream-dwelling species of the subgenus, but is distinguished by a suite of characters that includes: an epistome with a weakly curved zygoma that is wider than the space between the renal pores; a dorsal carapace, rostrum and abdomen densely pitted with punctations; a broad, extremely punctate areola; a strong, curved, cephalomesial flange on the ventral surface of the coxa of the fourth pereopod of adult males; and an adult color pattern that includes a dark saddle on the carapace and a pair of dark dorsolateral stripes on the abdomen.

A new crayfish of the genus Cambarus Erichson, 1846, subgenus Puncticambarus Hobbs, 1969 (Decapoda: Cambaridae), from the Hiwassee River basin of North Carolina

ABSTRACT Cambarus (Puncticambarus) brimleyorum is a new species of crayfish currently known only from lotic habitats in the Hiwassee River basin in Cherokee and Clay counties, North Carolina. Morphologically and meristically it is similar to another endemic Hiwassee crayfish, C. (P.) parrishi Hobbs, 1981, from which it differs in having a rostrum that lacks marginal spines or tubercles, a dorsal surface that is usually subplane instead of excavate, and a consistently longer acumen. The two species also vary in the shape of the cephalic lobe of the epistome. The new species differs from the only other species of Puncticambarus that occurs in the Hiwassee River basin, C. (P.) hiwasseensis Hobbs, 1981, in lacking rows of prominent tubercles on the mesial surface of the dactyl of the chela of the cheliped, in its narrower, less punctate areola, and in a number of other characters. Astacoides hobbsi, a new crayfish (Crustacea: Decapoda: Parastacidae) from Madagascar

A new species of crayfish, Astacoides hobbsi, is the seventh recognized in the endemic Madagascan genus Astacoides Guérin-Méneville, 1839 and is described from four male specimens collected in the Andranofotsiorana effluent of the river Ranomadio (Fianarantsoa province). The new species can be distinguished from all congeners by a combination of limited carapace spination, pale white color, gill formula of 13 + epr + 5r, lack of bullar lobes on sternite XIII, laterally curved lateral processes on sternite XIII, and spination of third maxilliped merus and ischium. The new species co-occurs with three other Astacoides species (A. granulimanus Monod & Petit, 1929, A. caldwelli (Bate, 1865), and A. betsileoensis Petit, 1923) in the same stream system. Special consideration should be given to conservation of this new species, as it is the Astacoides species known from the fewest specimens and may have a very restricted distribution.

Cambarus (Cambarus) eeseeohensis (Decapoda: Cambaridae), a new species of crayfish from the Linville River of North Carolina and its bearing on understanding the evolution of the subgenus Cambarus

A new species of crayfish, Cambarus (Cambarus) eeseeohensis, is described from the Linville River of North Carolina, United States. Of the recognized members of the subgenus, it is physically most similar to Cambarus sciotensis Rhoades, 1944, which is found primarily in the Scioto River of central Ohio and New River of West Virginia and Virginia. It is easily distinguished from other recognized members of the subgenus by the strong dorsal ridges on the chelae fingers and dorsolateral impression of the propodus, second row of reduced palmer tubercles, and gape of the chelae fingers.

New crayfishes (Decapoda: Parastacidae: Euastacus) from northeastern New South Wales, Australia

Routine astacological surveys in northeastern New South Wales have revealed four new species of crayfish. Three species are allied to the "setosus complex", a group of small and poorly spinose Euastacus previously recorded only from Queensland: E. girurmulayn n.sp. from the Nightcap Range, E. guruhgi n.sp. from the Tweed volcanic plug and E. jagabar n.sp. from the Border Ranges. These three species are differentiated chiefly on features of the sternal keel, spination and antennal squame. Euastacus dalagarbe n.sp., recorded from the Border Ranges, has affinities with a growing group of crayfish displaying morphological traits intermediary between the setosus complex and more characteristically spinose Euastacus. It differs markedly in spination of the chelae, and in the nature of the lateral processes of the pereiopods. All of these taxa occur in association with the much larger and more spinose E. sulcatus. An unusual crayfish specimen of uncertain status is also discussed.

Procambarus (Ortmannicus) hidalgoensis (Crustacea: Decapoda: Cambaridae), a new species of crayfish from Mexico

A new species of crayfish from Camino a Olotla, Tlanchinol County, Hidalgo, Mexico, is described. Procambarus (Ortmannicus) hidalgoensis is most closely related to P. (O.) cuevachicae (Hobbs, 1941) and P. (O.) toltecae Hobbs, 1943, from which it can be distinguished by having a gonopod with a mesial process slightly flattened distally and directed caudodistally; a cephalic process slightly larger than the rest of the terminal elements, originating on the caudal surface; and a plate-like caudal process, exhibiting a strongly folded external part of the pleopod. The annulus ventralis in the new species is rhomboidal, with two strong crests, forming a deep V-shaped depression anteriorly, ending in a sinus in the middle region.

Cambarus (Tubericambarus) polychromatus (Decapoda: Cambaridae), a new species of crayfish from the United States

A new species of crayfish, Cambarus (Tubericambarus) polychromatus is described from the western Ohio, Indiana, southern and east-central Illinois, western and central Kentucky, southern Michigan, and western Tennessee areas of North America. Of the recognized members of the subgenus, it is most closely related to Cambarus (T.) thomai, found primarily in eastern Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee and western West Virginia. It is easily distinguished from other recognized members of the subgenus by its strongly deflected rostrum and lack of spines overhanging the telson.

Cambarus buntingi, a New Species of Puncticambarus (Decapoda, Astacidae) from Kentucky and Tennessee

buntingi, a new species of crayfish from the Cumberland Plateau and Great Valley in Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau in Kentucky, is described. Color notes, relationships, distribution, life history notes and ecological data are given. The crayfish described herein represents one member of a species complex that Ortmann (1931) united under the name montanus. Girard (1852) described C. montanus from Within the Alleghany (sic) ranges in Virginia and Maryland: tributaries of James river in Rockbridge Co. (Va.): Shenandoah river in Clark Co. (Va.), and Cumberland (Md.) of the hydrographical basin of the Potomac; Sulphur Spring, Greenbrier river, an affluent of Kenhawa (sic) river (Va.) [W. Va.] of the Ohio basin. Unfortunately, the planned subsequent full description and illustrations of Girard's new species were never given, and the original brief account was inadequate to permit the recognition of C. montanus with certainty. Hagen (1870) treated C. montanus as a synonym of C. bartonii (-Astacus bartonii, Fabricius, 1798) after examining one of the type specimens. The syntypes of C. montanus were destroyed by the Chicago fire of 1871 while on loan to William Stimpson (Faxon, 1914). Faxon (1885) supported Hagen's opinion but later (1914), after noting that Cambarus bartonii from the Alleghany region of West Virginia and Virginia ... fall into two, sets of forms, gave C. montanus subspecific ranking under C. bartonii. A New Crayfish of the Subgenus Jugicambarus from Tennessee with an Emended Definition of the Subgenus (Astacidae, Decapoda)

A more accurate method of measuring the carapace is proposed. The use of the posterior margin of the epistome as a possible taxonomic structure is introduced. The subgenus Jugicambarus is emended. Cambarus crinipes, a new species of crayfish from the Cum- berland Plateau in Tennessee, is described. Color notes, relationships, distribution, life history notes and ecological data are given. In crayfish systematics the length of the carapace has been tradi- tionally measured from the tip of the rostrum to the midcaudodorsal margin of the carapace (total length of carapace). Damaged rostrums, coupled with the intrinsic variability of the structure, sug- gested that a more consistent measurement of the length of the carapace would be one currently utilized in the suborder Natantia and several sections of the suborder Reptantia: the distance from the angle of the orbit to the midcaudodorsal margin of the carapace (carapace length). Computations using this measurement usually attenuate range values. Narrower ranges of variation hopefully will make data more useful in comparing specimens. The term carapace length is so similar to total length of carapace that to avoid confusion it is here proposed to designate the measurement from the angle of the orbit as postorbital carapace length. Besides possible taxonomic merit, postorbital carapace length has a manual benefit. In measuring, calipers tend to slip off the tip of the acumen. Also, specimens in late premolt stages or early postmolt are so pliable that the rostrum and caudal margin of the carapace bend. The reinforced suborbital angle maintains itself so that only concentration on the caudal margin of the carapace need be maintained. By subtracting postorbital carapace length from total length of carapace, a more stable rostrum length is attained, thus removing the problem of deciphering the cephalic extremities of the postorbital ridges. During recent studies of existing problems with certain crayfish groups, a structure not previously mentioned, and only occasionally illustrated, has proven to be of considerable importance. Since the group in which use of this structure has shown some merit occupies a large geographic range still under study, it is introduced here so that other researchers may become aware of its potential taxonomic value. This structure, here designated the epistomal zygoma (Fig. lj), is the thickened posterior margin of the epistome lying immediately anterior to the mouth.
