DEVELOPMENT OF PROFESSIONAL SYSTEM IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY OF CHINA

Nowadays, the traditional roles and specialisms of the different disciplines of professionals such as architects, engineers and surveyors in construction industry are becoming less clear-cut. The concept of educating separate disciplines of construction professional may not be apt any more in the so-called practice system. With the unique socio-economic legacy in China, professional practice and qualifying system in the construction industry is rather different in comparison with the international context. This uniqueness creates an ideal opportunity for China to look for its own new model of training and development of construction professionals instead of merely copying the mode. Based on a survey carried out in Hong Kong, this paper aims to investigate the phenomenon of disintegrating professional boundaries in the practice system which serves as a reflection on the development of construction professionals in China. The investigation shows that construction professionals should critically re-examine their professional skills in their traditional domains. Multi-disciplinary and integrative-professional approach in the curricula of education is called for in the practice. The traditional education curriculum may not be sustainable in today's construction industry. At this juncture, China can make use of the opportunity to establish a new model for itself.

The Family Peace Project

Summary Intimate partner violence-assault by a spouse, ex-spouse, intimate friend or ex-friend-is the most common cause of injury for women and a serious public health problem. As a result, the American Medical Association has recognized physicians' ethical obligation to diagnose and treat partner violence, and called for new models of training. In this article, we review literature on the health care system's response to domestic violence. We then describe the Family Peace Project, a community oriented model for training health care professionals to identify, treat and prevent partner violence in primary health care settings. This training program provides knowledge, clinical skills and a sense of professional empowerment. Unique features of this program include: involvement of community mentors (survivors of family violence) as program faculty; training in specific clinical skills and protocols for screening, assessment and intervention; a hands-on assessment of community resources; coinmunity service; and, creation of an award winning web site to promote dissemination of the training program.

In-service training for special educational needs: A developmental approach

As our view of what constitutes special needs provision begins to shift and we re-examine teacher roles, attention naturally turns to existing in-service education and training (INSET). The authors of this article are members of a learning support service and have been involved in INSET for some time. Their experience has led them to conclude that current courses have many limitations. They propose an alternative that is continuous and concentrates on a thinking skills approach which is outlined in this article. They maintain that new models of training, along the lines currently being developed in the Wirral, are essential if we are to cope with contemporary shifts and demands.

The Training Model: Time for a Change?

A new model of training is proposed, redefining and adding to the traditional model, which is usually seen as defining organisational requirements, assessing job training needs, designing programmes, and evaluation. The author believes this is no longer adequate and gives an over‐simplified view. The four main blocks in his suggested replacement model are resource availability, assessment of training needs from the organisation standpoint, assessment of training needs relating to the job itself, and programme design. Evaluation activities are included within all the blocks.
